Pumping it up
T h'e March 27' edition of •auzz Weekly"'
features stories on all there is to do in
Costa Mesa, including a visit to the town's
world-famous shopping center, South
Coast Plaza.
Long known as a mecca for discerning
shoppers, the center also is more powerful
than your average shopping mall, accord·
ing to the magazine.
In the edition's "Spending" colwnn,
South Coast Plaza is complimented for
being like "Rodeo Drive on steroids.•
APRIL FOOL'S DAY PRANK: Longtime Bal-
boa Peninsula activist Jim Foumler gave
some Newport Beach residents a scare last
week when he distributed
the latest edition of his
homemade news letter,
"Balboa 92661 -The
Journal of Life in Bal-
boa."
In the article, he
exposes a secret city
plan to build a subway
from Balboa Island to
the peninsula using a percentage
of fuel taxes earmarked for coastal cities
projects.
The subway terminal was hidden in the
basement of the oty's pMking garage in
the 500 block of East Bay Avenue at the
ferry landing when the city built the struc-
ture in 1988, Fournier reports. After 10
years, the city is about to make its move to
complete the 40-foot-wide subway tunnel,
which would close the bay for up to four
months.
Newport Beach Councilman John
Hedges was quoted as saying: ·I consider
the Balboa Island subway to be an impor-
tant component to the revitalization of Bal-
boa.·
Fournier made 100 copies of the one-
page flier and passed it out around down-
town Balboa and City Hall. While chock-
full of valuable information, the most
important part of the news letter is the
date: April 1, 1998.
"No one said anything to me, but the
hearsay is some people really took 1t for
real,· Fournier said.
PRACTl~L JOKE FOILED: Dan Marcheano.
owner of Arches restaurant in Newport
Beach, nearly was the victim of an elabo-
rate April Fool's Day joke.
Aisa Wayne and friends had planned to
hire actors to wear firefighters' un.ifonns
and run inside the restaurarit at 2 p.m.
April 1 with gas meters. They were
instructed to tell Marcheano that the
restaurant had a horrible gas leak and he
should evacuate the diners immediately.
The pranksters discovered just in time
that Marciano was not in the restaurant
that afternoon, so they called the whole
thing off. Maybe there was an information
leak.
NO LONGER A SECRET: John Wayne's grave
marker is national news thanks to the
(Jlobe. a popular supermarket tabloid.
After almost 20 years of secrecy, a marker
was placed on the Duke's burial site at
Pacific View Memorial Park in Newport
Beach.
In its scoop -sandwiched between an
item on ·ntaruc• feuds and a story on ani·
mal-rights activists -the Globe published
a well-written and accurate account of the
actor's grave marker complete with pic-
tures and diagrams.
Not that the Daily Pilot staff regularly
reads tabloids, but we do feel a responsi-
bility to let our readers know the issue also
reported Donald and lvanna lhunp were
photographed together at the blllionaire's
Florida club, Mar-a-Lago.

Dr. Stephen Skahen, his wUe, Sandy, and children, James, 9, and
Jack, 13, hold up gifts given to them by Islanders in the South
Paci.f1c in appreciation for their missionary work.
By Jenifer Ragland, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -Sandy
and Stephen Skahen believe the
most valuable gift they can give a
fellow human being is the ability to
see the world around them .
That's why for the past eight
years the Newport Beach couple
and their two young sons have vis-
ited Turtle Island in Fiji to help a
volunteer-st.pffed, free eye clinic.
As part of the Beeve Foundation
for World Eye & Health, a ncmprof-
it organization founded by Glen -
dale eye surgeon Jerold Beeve, this
year, the Skahens helped test more
than 1,700 and perform eye
surgery on more than 80 islanders
during their weeklong trip. About
1,300 pairs of glasses were given to
people who would otherwise never
be able to afford eye care.
"This time was neat because we
saw a lot of young patients and so
many people who had no sight at
all,• Sandy said. "The people there
were so grateful and excited about
being able to see.·
Stephen, an anaesthesiologist at
Hoag Hospital, said he and his wife
got their drive to help others from a
long family history of missionaries.
They-found out about the clinic
through Beeve and his wife,
Dorothy, who saw the need for it
while on vacation in Fiji for their
25th wedding anniversary.
"We wanted to be involved in
oversees volunteer work, not to
change people, but to share with
them the knowledge and expertise
that we are fortunate enough to
have,• Stephen said. "We think its
an opportunity, and every year
they allow us to come, we will go."
Sandy said the trips are particu-
larly touching for her boys. Jack,

Fire dam.~ges Costa Mesa condominiums
• Officials say blaze that
displaces two families
started from embers in
garage trash can.
By Jentfer Ragland , Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -The routine
fire Duane Rich made in his fire-
place Friday night turned out to be
a 16t bigger than he expected, a.s
ashes he discarded into a trash can
ended up sparking a two-alann
blaze that gutted his two-bedroom
condominium, fire authorities said .
Costa Mesa firefighters were
dispatched to the three-unit condo
complex on the 700 block of West
2otb Street at abol\t noon Saturday,
said Battalion Chief Keith Fujimoto.
No one was hurt as a result of
the structure fire. Fujimoto said
Rich's condo and an adjacent resi-
dence were left uninhabitable,
while the third unit only suffered
minor damage. Total property loss
is estimated at about $90,000.
Fujimoto said a preliminary
investigation revealed that the
blaze started in a plastic garbage
can, which was stored in Rich's
garage on the first floor of the two-
story condo. The flames then
spread inside the house, destroying
the two bedrooms and causing
some damage to the roof of the
building. Rich, who has lived in the
condo for three years with his
mother, said Sunday the American
Red Cross has housed him in a local

RESTORING YOUR
CAR'S FINISH
There has been a profound shift
in vehicle design in recent years
from rear to front-wheel drive.
What's the difference? Rear-wheel
drive has a drivetrain arrangement
by which the engine power goes
through the transmission to the
driveshaft, then to the rear wheels.
With front-wheel drive. the
transmission and the axle are
combined into one unit (the
transaxle), mounted directly to the
engine. Eliminating the separate
rear ax le/differential assembly
enables automakers to reduce the
weight of their cars. The compact
Lransaxle unit is also smaller and
easier to install. On the other hand,
rear-wheel-drive advocates claim
that their design handles better at
the limit because loss of traction
does not hamper the car's ability to
steer.
HINT: Carmakers have
addressed concerns over "torque
steer" in front-wheel-drive cars
(compromised steering ability
due to loss of traction in the
front wheels) by introducing
traction control to inhibit wheel
spin.
RESTORING YOUR
CARS FINISH
Once an automobile leaves the
dealer's lot, the sun and the
elements begin their assault on the
paint. Oxidation leaves paint
looking dull, while acid rain, bird
droppings, and other envi ronment
insults produce etching and stains.
Then, there are the light scratches
that occur daily. The good news?
As long as these defects do not go
through the outer layer (whether a
clear coat or color coat), they can
be "finessed out." This means that
enough of the top layer can be
removed to take out the defects and
return 1 smooth, glossy finish to the car. Prof es ion al paint restoration
involves the use of various grades
of rubbing compounds for li1ht
defects, while wet sanding is
reserved for more serious cases.

At first, he thought nothing of

go to the emergency room.
After several hours of tests and

Posp1Sil qwckly rull'd out that
the pain was caused by a pulled
muscle, which is what Moorad
ongmally thought, dnd called in
an expert.
When infecuous chscases spe-

"When they said they would
have to take me to surgery right
away, the lawyer in me said wait

and think about this for a while,•
Moorad said. "But little did I know
that time was short.•
Because the disease spreads so
quick1y, Fee said, it is critical to act
as soon as possible. "I basically
told him there was no b.rne for sec-
ond opinions," he said.
Moorad then experienced the
first of what would be seven surg-
eries to clean out the infected
muscle tissue over 2 112 weeks. In
the end, doctors managed to
remove all of the harmful bactend
without causmg any long-term
effects to Moorad's leg. After
physical therapy, Moorad now
walks unassisted.
Moorad said he went through
various stages throughout his
month-long ordeal, the final one
being appreciation and reflection.
He also expressed gratitude to the
doctors who worked so hard to
save his life
"I think I came away from the
experience Wlth a new perspec-
tive on work, family and liie in
general. It has definitely left me
with a healtluer view of the priori·

did." Fee said. "It worked in his
favor because the disease wasn't
moving as fast as it has in other
people. But Jeff was very sick and
could have died if we didn't catch
it. ..
Fee and Pospisil said it was
rewarding to work on Moorad's
case, especially because they
were able to defeat the infection
qwckly and keep him healthy.
"It was exciting, but also nerve-
wracking," said Pospisil, who was
involved in all of Moorad's surgi-
cal treabnents. "In medicine, you
like to deal with knowns, so that if
you do X, Y will happen. But with
th.IS disease, you may do some-
th.mg and the disease will respond
m a way you didn't like it to."
The doctors still don't know
exactly how Moorad became
infected. Fee said bactena -the

through an open wound
·we don't fully understand
how the disease is transmitted,·
he said. "It's very scary because
usually it attacks very healthy
people.·
Despite being hospitalized,
Moorad managed to negotiate
more than $150 million in baseball
contracts -the highest in the
industry this year.
·I spend my life on the tele-
phone and, thankfully, Hoag has a
great phone system," he said. ·1

and other staff people in his office
were invaluable in stepping up to
help share his workload.
"Everyone in the office elevat-
ed their performance two notch-
es," said Steinberg, who added
that Moorad's hospitalization
came at one of the firm's busiest
times. "My advice to them was to
channel their anxiety and appre-
hension over Jeff's future into the
law finn, so he would have some-
thing exciting to look forward to
when he got through it."
The impact of it all was more
than apparent this w.eek as
Moorad attended various baseball
season openers in support of the
players that depend on him for
their careers.
"I've been working in this spe-
cialty area for 15 years, and yet 1t
wasn't unW I went through the
experience at Hoag that I really
stopped to reflect and remind
mysell of how truly fortunate I
was,· Moorad said.

D' Alessandro
have a clue?
r------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------~--, .
• Coach's curious temper
Lantrum after defeat at
Orange Coast left fans
wondering what happened.
Orange Coast College's men's
'olleyball team won its biggest
rndtch of the season over Golden
West Saturday rught.
After about five minutes of
1umpmg ma huddle with friends
dnd teammates, throwing the
coaches mto the pool and diving
1n themselves, Coach Chuck
<. ·utenese and some of the
players were ready for postgame
interviews
I was talking to freshman
'>l'lter Ryan Hiskey when a loud
< Jang and an angry grumble
rhsrupted the party at OCC's
Pe terson Gymnasiwn.
Golden West Coach Mike
!)'Alessandro had been sitting
near the end of the Pirates'
bench when the OCC gang
returned from the pool. For some
reason, D' Alessandro picked up
one of the foldmg chairs and
slammed 1t to the ground and
qrurnbled as someone pulled
him away
Now, 1 remember the most
unsportsmanltke thing I've ever
seen. It was almost exactly six
years ago on a softball field in
Lancaster, Otuo. For whatever
reason, those trashy,
unsportsmanlJke, poor-loser
thmgs are 1ust mcidents you
never forget.
Unfortunately, my small but
v1v1d list grew by one Saturday
rug ht.
I have no idea why
D' Alessandro threw the chair
,ind needed to be pulled away.
Maybe losing the Orange
Empire Conference title was all
1t was. Maybe he was just
frustrated. Maybe he had a
reaUy good reason.
I'm sure there are really good
reasons to act like a spoiled baby
in front of people. 1 just can't
rPport what it might be.
Hlskey and I turned our
<1llenllon from questions on the
match to the racket at the end of
the court.
"What's going on there?" I
dSked
"I have no idea,· he s.aid.
Hmmm, I JUSl wonder, does
()'Alessandro have any idea?

Elizabeth Reed ol Newport Beach Ntumed to Orange County lut week to compete ln the U.S.
Hockey Cbamplombips at Disney Jee ln Aubetm In order to play com~ttve lrtfls hockey,
~ 16, goes to • prep school called Pomfret ln Connecticut.
Elizabeth Reed said
goodbye to Newport
Beach for an ice rink
and school back East.
By Molly Yanity, Daily Pilot
Reed couldn't
unagine anything more
art-wrenching. TherE!
was, dropping off his
16-year-old daughter,
Elizabeth, at a prep school in
Connecticut 3,000 miles away
from their Newport Beach
home.
•1t was the toughest thing
I've ever done," he said.
Jim Reed couldn't imagine
anything more justifying. There
Elizabeth was, swatting pucks
into the net at her first ice
hockey game.
It's one of those things -
one of those things that dad-
dies have to do. They have to
let go of their little girls' hands
and send them on their way.
For Jim Reed, he might as
well have let go of a hockey
glove and sent Elizabeth
skating away.
Usually fathers don't have to
watch their daughters off until
college. But most daddies don't
have female hockey prodigies
under their roofs, either.
"She came in one night and
· we were sitting in front of the
TV and she said, 'I want to play
ice hockey,•• Reed recounts. •1
kind of blew her off. I mean, I'd
never even been to a hockey
game. But she's a very
determined girl·
So determined.. in fact, that
she traded in two years at
Santa Margarita High for a spot
on the girls hockey team at
Pomfret School in Connecticut.
"The first game I ever
played in (at Pomfret) I got two
goals,• Elizabeth says proudly.
Not a bad decision.
Elizabeth, 16 and a junior at
Pomfret, is missing 10 days of
school along with one of her
teammates to compete with an
elite state youth team, Team
Cal, in this week's U.S.
National Hockey
Championships at Disney Ice in
Anaheim.
•1 started playing pretty
young. I was playing roller
hockey with some of the guys
in the neighborhood when I
was about 7 or 8, • she said.
Her hockey career got
rolling on in-line skates when
she began playing at the
Harbor Area Boys Club.
•She was doing really well.•
her father said. •we have a
rule in the house. The rule is if
you start something, you can't
quit. You finish it. So, she said
she wanted to play ice hockey
and that was four and a half
years ago.·
Reed began playing on ice
with boys teams, but once she
got to the midget level, she
(and all the other girls trying
out for this particular club,
according to Jim) was cut.
"About the same time that
happened, she got a letter from
a coac;h to go back East to play
(for a prep school)," he said.
Elizabeth said the decision
to leave home wasn't difficult,
but choosing a school was.
"I'd gone to some camps
and coaches had seen me
there," she said. "I didn't get ' •
into my No. 1 choice and the I I school I did get into, I didn't l
really want to go.• I
Then she went to a tryout in I
Michigan where Pom.fret's :
Coach Waddy Rowe caught the , 1
gleam on Elizabeth's skates
and asked her if she would be
interested in joining his squad
in Connecticut.
"She's very fast and worked
extremely bard," Rowe said.
"She hadn't played that long,
but she was extremely
tenacious and aggressive and
wanted to learn. After each
session, she'd ask what she
could do to get better. I was
extremely impressed with her
attitude."
the team's third-leading
scorer this winter, Reed
elped Pomfret to an
18-3-1 record scoring hat tricks
on several occasions from her
left wing position.
Pomfret moved to Division 1
this season (after earning the
New England Championship in
Division II in 1997) and made it
to the playoffs in its first try in
the mor~ competitive
classification. The squad was
ranked eighth among 46 prep
school teams.
"When we trying to make it 1 to the playoffs (toward the end
of the season), we had to beat
three teams in a row, including
the No. 1 ranked team. We tied
them, 0-0. It was the first time
someone had shut them out,"
she recalled.
For Team Cal, she is playing
right wing.
Reed is hoping her ice
dreams take her to one of the
women's colleqe hockey
powerhouses at the University
New Hampshii&, Providence,
Northeastern or Colby.
"She'll definitely play
colleqe, •Rowe said. •she's
getting a lot of exposure. She's
going to be a good one.•

CONTINUED FROM 6
tenders jumping out to a 2-0 lead
ln the first game .. bu( there was
llttle suspense -t&( approximat-
ed 350 fans knew tt would be a
lpng mat.ch.
Golden West needed five tries
-and a replay -to finally seal
game point, which came via a
Coast hitting error.
Orange Coast stormed back in
game two taking leads of 4-1, 9·6
·and 13-8 before the Rustlers,
paced by last spring's OBC Play-
er of lhe Year Scott Lane, knotted
the dual at 13-13.
Cutenese called a timeout
-after GW's Casey Brewer served
for three consecutive points.
The timeout tactic had been
effective up to that point as after
both coaches took the break,
their team earned a sideout. It
worked for Coast and Ivan Mer-
cer and Nicolas Dominik sup-
plied a block on a Lane kill
attempt to notch the 15th point
and a Rustler hit that went long
clinched the game at 16-14.
Coast came on strong in the
third game, thanks In part to six
kills by Newport Harbor High
product Josh Richardson and, to
go 15-8.
But no one thought the
Rustlers would disappear.
After 12 grueling sideouts to
open the fowth, Golden West put
up a 2-0 lead on the serving of
freshman Ross Willey.
The Pirates' hitting became
seemingly nonaggressive and
most attempts went wide or long.
"They really took it to us in the
fourth,• Cutenese said as the
guests won it, 15-8. •But the fifth
game is anybody's game. I said
before we got in there that who-
ever can play steadiest down the
stretch will win it."
With the crowd chanting ·o-
C-CI" and thundering after every
point in the rally-score set, it
seemed Orange Coast couldn't
lose.
The Pirates won the toss and
got a 1-0 lead on Mark Pozsgai's
kill and too a 6-3 lead after a nm
Tamas hit found the wood.
Rustier Coach Mike D' A-
lessandro called a timeout and
the momentum swung to his
team as Lane ripped one to the
floor.
Coast built another solid lead
at 9-6, but West snuck back to
within one (12-11) after an OCC
service error gave the green and
gold not only a point, but the
serve.
But McBdin and Pozsgai
pulled through with kills for the
13th and 14th points. And it was
Pozsgai and the 6-foot-7 Mercer
who combined for a block that
clinched the match and sent the
majority of the crowd and all the
Coast players into wild celebra-
tion.
Coincidentally, Mercer and
Pozsgai both play other varsity
sports for Orange Coast. Mercer
is a star wide receiver for Coach
Bill Workman's football squad
and Pozsgai was a starter on the
Bucs' basketball team.
Pozsgai tallied a team-high 24
kills, while McBain hammered
down 20. Richardson also added
19. Hiskey put up 69 assists.
"I hope we don't have to meet
them again unW the final (of the
state tournament),• Cutenese
said. M It's been going that they
beat us at their place and we beat
them at ours. Being on our home
court was a huge factor.•
Cutenese praised his squad's
"team" efiort and that the Pirate
attack was a balanced one.
"Defense was key. A big dif-
ference (from the Feb. match
which Golden West won) was
bl~king their back row. Their
back row (attackers) killed us last
time. We were able to block them
this time and that' was not as
effective for them."
Golden West, the three-time
consecutive state champ, was led
by Lane's 22 kills.
