Costa Mesa woman denies knowing about drug deal
• Friend of arrested Newport Beach socialite says she
was caught in the middle of the high-profile case.
By Husein Mashni, Daily Pilot
COSTA lvlESA -She found
herself in the middle of a higb-
profile drug case, but Costa Mesa
resident Marilyn Scott said Mon-
day she had no knowledge of the
cocaine sale to an undercover
officer that led to the arrest of her
friend, Newport Beach socialite
nna Schatnitz.
The two women were detained
by Tustin police after Schafnitz
allegedly sold 17 grams of
cocaine -just over half an ounce
-for $1,000 about 4 p.m. March
16 in the parking lot of an El Tori-
to restaurant in Tustin.
Schafnitz, 38, was arrested and
booked at Orange County Jail,
but Scott. 42, was questioned and
released, police said.
"I feel bad enough that I was
even there," Scott said. "l wasn't
even arrested. I was just ques-
tioned, and then they let me go.•
Police said Scott was not in
Schafnitz's black Mercedes-Benz
when the deal allegedly occurred
between Schafnitz and an under-
cover officer named Glenn.
Scott said she and -scbafnitz
had been hanging out together
for about three months and had
become relatively close friends.
On the night of the arrest, Scott
said Schafnitz drove her to the
restaurant to meet someone
named Glenn.

go out dancing. She goes out all
the time, and we were just going
to have a drink with him."

Hotel maM be OK, but tower is not
•
I am completely against erect-
ing a tower seven stories
high on the former Pacific
Federal Plaza site and the dou-
bling of the total building
square footage.
Zoning laws are established
for a reason, and if bigh-
fmanced developers are able to
plow over laws that everyone
else has to live by, it is wrong.
As a real estate broker, I am
quite familiar with this project.
I've seen the owner reject
numerous offers and lease pro-
posals time after time.
The only reason this property
has remained vacant over the
years is simply because the
ownership wants a price signifi-
cantly above market value.
Thus, the only way to justify his
sales pnce of almost $18 million
is to significantly increase the
property's potential net income.
The main reason I've followed
this project through the years is
because its e laborate architec-
ture, detail and design are such a
ranty in our concrete-and-glass,
ll.lt-up world. This is one of the
few projects that is not only
beautifully designed but happens
to be situated at the entrance to
our cities -Costa Mesa and
Newport Beach.
As most people in the com-
mercial real estate industry
know, rental rates for office and
retail use have increased drasti-
cally over the last 12 months,
and there is no reason why this
property's existing zoning needs
to change m order to attract an
occupant, other than the fact
the owner wants to maximize
his profits at the cost of higher
traffic congestion and the city's
lost skyline.
I think an alternative use,
such as a hotel, although not
necessary, could be considered
by the City Council. However,
doubling the property's size and
constructing a tower three sto-
ries taller than the four-story
limit is not only wrong but bad
for the city and its residents.
In addition, 1t will establish a
horrible precedent for all proper-
ties with a greater value JX>tential
than their exisbng zonings or uses.
I urge the city to reject this
use before developers can begin

I like Ole' ocean. That ls, I like
that part of the ocean

breaker line, forget it.
I definitely am not a deep-

An incident with a girl in a

Samoan. They cluster around
the government dock and stay
strictly to themselves. From
tune to time, some of them take
off for some distant destination.
All I really knew about them
was that they certainly were a
clean group. At all ti.mes. laun-
dry was hanging from the rig-

thel! boats consisted of some of
the most dilapidated sailing
vessels I have ever seen. Not at
all like the nice white yachts in

sails weren't white, but a kind
of dirty gray.
I only knew one Yachtie
personally, and he was a for-

They set sail from San Francis-

When asked how the 5th Dis·

resent the entire district when it is
virtually dlVlded on the issue of El

continue to seek answers to his
questions and look at alternatives.
Hedges responded by saying,

Earlier in the meeting, offi-

council for more money than
they stood to get.
The senior center, which
received $10,000 last year, had
asked for $12,000 this year, but
was only recommended to get
$5,000, a reduction that didn't sit
well with the center staff.

data is needed on the safety and
noise issues of a commercial air-

behind it. For Hedges, it was that
taking a leadership role in the
planning process better serves all
Orange County residents than
does a •just say no" attitude.
The comment by Wilson that
seemed to eruage many members
of the audience was, ·vou don't

pointed out the fact that El Toro
has been an airport for more than

Corona del Mar High's roller hockey team earns
Division III crown with 5-4 win over
Capo Valley in an overtime shootout as
Ryan Stockwell nets the game-winner.
TUSTIN -The pressure of the season-long quest to win the High
School Division ID roller hockey championship had just shifted ...
from the shoulders of Corona del Mar High's goalkeeper Ben
Wynkoop to leading scorer Ryan Stockwell.
On Sunday, the Sea Kings battled Capistrano Valley for the title
and, after a 3-3 deadlock at the end of regulation, Wynkoop's saves
in the net during the overtime shootout gave the home team, CdM,
a shot at the win.
So, it was Stockwell's tum.
At the referee's signal, Stockwell exploded toward Capo Valley's
keeper. The Sea King faked to his left completely fooling the
goalie, who lunged to the floor, but Stockwell instead rifled the
puck to the right.
The shot was right on the money and clinched the title with a
5-4 win.
Coach Phillip Rothwell's squad celebrated its 11 -1 season as
Capo Valley settled for second place with an 8-4 mark.
Stockwell had scored two goals in regulation and senior Todd
Cornett added the third.
In the sudden-death series, Wynkoop held tough in the net with
four saves on five shots, and CdM's Blake Smith scored to set up
Rothwell's winner.
Roller hockey is played at the club level as it is not sanctioned by
the CIF. but CdM seniors playing in their final game included Cor-
nett, Jeff Bemis and Jonathon Stair.
Other members of the championship squad included Timor Ben-
Yehzkel, Chris Rivers and Jeff Tsao.

The bidding: sourn WEST NOR111 EAST .. ....,. I• Pa.<IS
INT Put 20 .,.. lNT .._ JNT hes ....,. .....
Opening lead: Five of \:7
You don't need to be a mathcmati·
cal whiz to play bridge. Jt is all very
well to be able to calculate exactly
the odds of one line over aoo<her, but
by aod large a few generalities will
suffic.c. The key to many bands is a
basic knowledge that the missing
cards in a suit more often than not
will brcalc as close to evenly as possi-
ble without actually being even.
Thus, if you are misstng silt cards in
a suit. they ralC to divide 4-2.
The auction looks natural but is
not quite. North's diamond bid did
not necessarily promise a suit -it
was simply a forcing chcckback to
allow Sooth to show three-cant spade
support. When South could not
oblige but confirmed sure stoppers in
lhe red suit. North settled for the no-
trump game.
West led a low hcan.. declarer cap-
turing East's jack with the king .
Since declarer needed only four
spade tricks for the conlraCt. South
could afford to surrender a spade.
The ten of spades was led and, had
West played low, declarer would
have followed low from dummy.
This flay would succeed against any
lie o the cards except a sio,glcton
jack. in the East hand. When West
covered with the jack, declarer won
with the table's queen, returned to
hand with the king of diamonds and
led another spade. finessing the eight
when West produced 1 low spade.
This JUaranteed four spade tricks,
and rune tricks in an, no matter how
the spades were divided. Note that
cashing spades from the top, while
yielding (our lrici(s ~ of the time
and producing five on 36 percent of
the bands, would have resulted in
only three tricks and almost cenai.nly
would have cost the contract.
