Family cars destined

M y friend Julie once told me, to justify
her purchase of a new Mercedes
station wagon, that she considered
her car more of a tool than a luxury; a preci-
sion instrwnent that fastened together the
nuts and bolts of her dally roub.ne.
It was a powerful metaphor.

The recent discovery of a manu-

the Estancia has revealed a
heretofore unknown confrontation of
the Revolutionary War-lhe Battle
for Goat Hill -which was almost
fought right here on our very own
shores.
The manuscript was written by a
Franciscan brother who was part of a
secret force of Spanish and English

They were lying in wait for George

forced march through several
wildernesses and at least one desert,
ended up on the coastal plain known
on ancient maps as Mackerel Plats.

the boys and me routinely every Saturday
morning. "Why can't you keep it clean?"
Why, mdeed, I think to myself, recalling
the week we JUSt hnished: the week in
which our carpool companions, Emily and
Nora , brought their two sand sculpture-book
report-models-which-weren't-completely-
glued-yet into the back seat; the week m
which I wrapped three presents in the park-

steel underbelly of the middle bench seat.
Now, how did that happen, I wondered to
myself as I do when I discover petrified
string cheese in the glove compartment or a
clump of scrambled egg wedged inside the
weather stripping of the back window.
Just another Vllllage week, I will usually
conclude, of family life in the fast lane.

Newport Beach/Costa Mesa Inily Piloc
Wmds of change: are they sweeping
over Orange County's voters?
T here was something really
strange a bout last Tues-
day's electio11.
Maybe it was a new trend in
local politics. Maybe voters here
have softened.
Maybe, just maybe, voters in
Orange County have become,
gasp, more middle of the road .
Known in the past for their
anti-tax, hardline, conservative
bent. voters in the good ol' Gold -
en Orange could often be count-
ed on to vote the polar opposite
of their statewide brofuers when
it came to things like new taxes
for school bonds or making free-
way bridges earthquake proof or
liftingpent control.
And when turnout for an elec-
tion is light, the convenuonal
wisdom says the conservative
vote gets even h eavier.
: Not so.Jhi,s year.
In an election that bodsled of
record low turnouts, Ordnge
County voters approved of dild
just about mirrored statewide
ballots in every smgle proposi-
tion from 192 to 203.
Let's take Propos1hon 203 for
example. This me.isure calls for
$3 billion of tdXpdyers' money to
pay for facilities dnd ronst ruction
of public schools.
Around these pdrts, iust the
mention of the word tdX would
normally call for an irn.ta nt
thumbs down. This 1s whe re vot-
ers wouldn't raise sdl es ldxes by
half a cent to bdtl themselves out
of bankruptcy.
Yet, while Proposi lton 203
tony
dodero
won by a whopping 62% to 38%
statewide, voters in this county
passed it 55% to 4~% -a 10%
margin of victory.
And Proposition 192, which
called for another $2 billion in
taxpayer dough to reconstruct
state highway bridges to ensure
they meet state seismic codes,
passed 60% to 40% state wide
and 57% to 43% locally.
Not a whole lot of difference
there .
Then there was Proposition
199. A yes vote on this measure
would have lifted all local rent
control statutes on mobile home
parks.
Rent control is practically a
four-le tte r w ord here, so that was
sure to win big right?
Wrong.
Proposition 199 was d efeated
here 53% to 4.7 % and defeated
at the <:tate level 61 % to 39%.
Likewise, voters here echoed
their state counterparts on crime
issues, approving by wide mar-
gins measures to execute or give
life in prison without parole to
drive-by shooters and carjackers
and take away unemployment
compensation for just-released
prisoners.
Even Pat Buchanan, whose
anti-immigration, anti-abortion,
anti-Washington establishment
message is a natural here, pulled
a meager 18% of the vote
against Bob Dole in Orange
County.
Actually, Buchanan did better
statewide, picking up 19% of the
vote.
Want more?
A self-proclaimed, •pro-
choice " woman, Marilyn Brewer,
tieat'the holy tar out of Jim
Rems, an anti-abortion candi-
date, who thought his best
chance to win was to harken
back to the days of old and call
Bre we r the worst of all possible
things -·a liberal."
The voters yawned and
renominated her 63% to 30%, a
2-1 margin.
Could it be that the days
when Orange County legislators
were characterized as "cave-
man" and • neanderthals" are
over.
Nah, couldn't be.

: Barbara , but it's still a
first-rate attraction.
CORONA DEL MAR -Follow-
ing a four-day delay, th~ much-
anticipated boys tennis match
between Newport Harbor High
and Corona del Mar will finally
serve and volley its way to the
hardcourts today (3 p .m.), when
the Back Bay rivals meet in a Sea
View League match at CdM.
Geoff Abrams, Newport ~
bor senior, is scheduled to face
CdM junior Boris Turkich in a No.
1 singles set to open the match.
Abrams is rated among the top
20 in the world by the Interna-
tional Tennis Federation in the
• 18s, while Turkich, an exchange
: student from Croatia, has elevat-! ed himself to the top in Orange
: County with a 33-1 record.
: Abrams, who bas played only
• sparingly this season for Coach
: Charlie Bleiker's Sailors, is the
• second-ranked American player
: in the ITF rankings . . . . . . . . .
H IGH S CHOOL BOY S T EN N I S
"I told him it's for bragging
rights of Orange County and all
that, and he didn't want to pass,"
Blei.ker said. "He said, 'I'll do it for
you."'
Abrams, a two-time U.S. junior
national team member who is
headed for Stanford next year on
a tennis scholarship, probably will
not play in the Sailors' second
meeting w1th CdM, he said.
"You never know what can
happen in one set,· CdM Coach
Tim Mang said. "You know what
Jed Weinstein did (in 1994), he
beat (Abrams in a single set). But
they didn't play a second time,
because I had Jed in doubles.
Thlit's also when Geoff was only a
sophomore; there was a lot of
pressure on him."
Abrams, Turkich, Foothill's
Joost Hol and Servite's Ryan
Moore are widely considered the
best players in the county.
"I will definitely be ready to
play,~ Abrams said. "If I win I
win, if I lose I lose. They've got to
play well, also. If I come out and
play well, they have to deal with
it; if they come out and play well,
I have to deal with it. But I should
get a few good matches."
When Abrams decided earlier
ih the year to return to Newport
Harbor from the Palmer Tennis
Academy in Tampa, Fla., whe re
be spent the majority of last year,
most anticipated enormous inter-
est in the set (or sets) between
Abrams and CdM freshman Tay-
lor Dent, ranked No. 1 in the
nation in the 14s.
But while Dent has ached
th.rough a recent growth spurt,
reportedly growing four inches
within the last year, it has been
Turkich who has played his way
to the top in the county.
"I hope it's a good match,"
Mang said. "(The match) is on our
courts, so Boris will be OK. Geoff
has got a big serve, but Boris can
adjust. He plays very well on our
courts, and if he's up, it'll be a
great match."
CIF DiVisio~ I Finals preYiew?
Turkich was ranked third in his
homeland last year in the 16s. He
won singles and doubles titles in
1995 in an lTF tournament in
Slovenia. He will reportedly
return to Croatia next year.
•Hee~. Geoff's top 20 in the
world. He's one of the best in the
country, so that guy (Turkich) is
going to h.ave to elevate his game,
because Geoff's got a big serve,·
Bleiker said.
Turkithrs·unbeaten streak end-
ed Saturday in Santa Barbara.
Abrams should also get good
competition from Dent and John
Cappello, CdM's probable No. 3
singles player.

athletic career stays on its
customary winning course.

Last Saturday afternoon, I
received a telephone call
from Newport Harbor High
. volleyball coach Dan Glenn. His
first words were, ~Have you
seen page 18 of the sports
section?"
In this particular day's news,
there was lots of volleyball. It
ranged from high school articles
to college scores to an article on
some seemingly unethical
activities by a local high school
coach. I knew that none of these
articles were the reason for this
phone call. I was way ahead of
Coach Glenn.
On page 18, in the fine print,
the results of the NCAA Division
I Swimming National
Championships were listed.
Former Newport Harbor and Sea !
View League Athlete of the Year, :
Maureen McLaren, had finished
second 'in the 100 backstroke at
the Collegiate Nationals. She
later finished seventh in the 200
backstroke as her team,
Stanford, won the National
Championship.
McLaren was a standout at
Newport Harbor in volleyball,
basketball and swimming. She
earned ELEVEN varsity letters in :
her high school career.
In volleyball, McLaren was
• the captain along with Tara
Kroesch and a four-year letter
winner. She helped lead the ~· Orange County Volleyball Club 1 to the National Club
Championship in her eighth
grade and senior club season.
Sbe accepted a full volleyball
scholarship to Stanford, where
she has been a part-time starter
on two National Championship
teams. When she was not :
playing for the volleyball team or !
studying, McLaren was on :
Stanford's swim team. •
Her collegiate swim career
brought two previous National
Championship experiences but
mainly as more of a supplemental
swimmer th.an as a high point
scorer.
Three weeks ago, she had
finished second in the 100
backstroke at the Pacific 10
Championships, so she was :
ready for a great swim in her last :
collegiate athletic experience. To
finish second in the nation, for
an athlete whose second sport is
swimming, is a tribute to her
tremendous a thletic talents.

Decisions
• Costa Mesa High has some
questions which need some answers.
T he two leacting candidates for the Costa
Mesa High girls basketball coaching
vacancy will need no introduction when
they sit down today before an mterview panel
including school officials, parents and students.
Shontel Sherwood, a varsity assistant who
finished the season as "intenm" head coach
when Len Whitacre resigned early in the Pacific
Coast League campaign, joins current Mesa
junior varsity and former varsity head coach
Jim Weeks atop the list of applicants, according
to sources on campus.
Mesa Boys Athletic Director Jerry Howell
said candidates will also interview Wlth
Principal Andy Hernandez, before a final
decision in made, which could be as soon as
Friday.
:l
Candidates to replace boys basketball coach
Jason Ferguson, who died Jan 20 after a
yearlong battle with cancer, will begin the same
interview process Tuesday, according to Howell
who also hopes to begm intervtewing
prospective Varslty wrestling coaches as soon
as Wednesday.
:l
Criss Freeman, Ferguson's assistant and
junior varsity coach the past two seasons who
guided the Mustangs the last seven games of
the season, is not among the applicants.
Freeman, a teanunate of Ferguson's at
Mount San Antonio College, said be is
exploring options to continue his playing career,
including competing in the upcoming Summer
Pro League at Long Beach State.
"I want to give it one more shot at playing
somewhere." Freeman said. "And if that
doesn't work out, I'll probably be an assistant
coach next year at Workman High (where Rick
Cook, Ferguson's high school coach and mentor
is the varsity bead coach).•
