Serving the Newport-Mesa community since 1907
Keeping Amanda's
memories intact
A video Camcorder do~ted to the
family of Amanda.Arthur to record
her rehabilitation and recovery last year
after a traffic accident wu reported
stolen last week from her Newport
Beach home.
Her mother, Chris Maese, said the
family was sorry to lose the camel'a, Q.ut
is more thankful that-
none of the irreplace-
able tapes were taken
along with it.
•Mandy watches
those quite often -
whenever she's feel-
ing down or like she
can't do something,•
Maese said.
, The Newport Harbor
teenager fell into a coma after a May 23
car accident in which her classmate,
Donny Bridgman, was killed. She bas
undergone therapy since she emerged
from the coma last summer. The cam-
corder was one of many gUts the family
received from the community during
Amanda's recovery.
Newport Beach police reported the
$1,000 camcorder was stolen between
March 27 and April 3 by someone who
had access to the house or while the
doors were left unlocked.
OTY MANAGER GETS A NEW PERSPEC-
TIVE: Costa Mesa City Manager Allan
Roeder got to look at his City Council
in a whole new light last week.
As part of a regular training program
designed to prepare high-ranking
members of Roeder's staff to fill in
when he is away on vacation or ill, the
city manager's executive assistant, Ann
Gyben, sat in for him at Monday night's
meeting.
Roeder still attended the meeting
and sat in the front row of the audi-
ence, but admitted to being somewhat
anxious.
One particularly tense moment came
about two hours into the meeting as the
council struggled with wording in a
proposal to install dozens of barbecues
in city parks around town, a seemingly
simple matter on the agenda.
As the council went around and
around in circles, Roeder was itching to
interrupt and get things moving on the
right track.
•During some of the dialogue on the
barbecues, I was sitting on the edge of
my seat,• Roeder said after the meet-
ing. •1t was like, 'I think what you're
trying to say is ... '"
ATTORNEY BACK AT WORK AFTER
QUICK HONEYMOON: There is a sub-
plot in the carefully watched sparring
match between the Newport-Mesa
school district and the attorney for
Corona del Mar High School senior
.ff¥an Huntsman over the district's con-~versial zero-tolerance drug and alco-
bol policy.
The case, which made its court
debut March 3, came a few weeks
before the planned wedding and Euro-
pean honeymoon of one of its main
players, Huntsman's attorney, David
Shores.
Shores and his fiance, Diane Kawata,
were married March 21 in Paris, where
they spent a romantic two-week honey-
moon.
With barely enough time to catch his
breath, Shore's trans-Atlantic intermis-
sion was over and he was back in court
last week to resume Huntsman's
defense.

Council to .review 1998 community objectives
• Costa Mesa workshop to
focus on proposed list of chores
for upcoming budget year.
By Tim Grenda, Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -The City Council
tonight is scheduled to informally
review its 1998 community objectives,
consider refinancing some public bonds
and go over the proper way to handle
and display the American flag outside
public buildings.
The council, in a workshop during
which no formal action can be taken,
will consider a proposed list of chores
that members would like to accomplish
m the upcoming budget year, which
begins in July.
In past years, the City Council has
adopted the list of city pro1ects,
improvements and other things to be
put on the front burner before adopting
a budget for the year.
But on the advice of its staff. the
council is prepared this year to review
and adopt a new set of goals before the
1998-99 budget is approved, giving it a
chance to fit part of the list into the next
fiscal budget if desired.
Included on the proposed wish list
are efforts to fight crime, complete the
Santa Ana River Crossings Study, build
more sidewalks and conduct an emer-
gency response drill for city officials.
The council priority list will be dis-
cussed at 4:30 p.m. in the first-floor con-
ference room at City Hall. 77 Fau Drive.
In other action, the council is pre-·
pared to look over a proposal from Marc
Davis, acting director of finance, to refi-
nance $15 million of lease-revenue
bonds the city issued in 1990.
With the bond market in a favorable
position, Davis has proposed refinanc-
ing the bonds to reduce the interest rate
from ?.2% to about 5.35%.
Domg so would save the city about
$85,000 a year, or $1.2 million over the
30-year life of the bonds, according to a
oty staff report.
At the request of Councilwoman
Heather Somers, the council also is set
to revtew the city's policy regarding dis-
play of the United States Dag over pub-
lic faolibes.
The oty follows national flag eti-
quette, which spells out how to care for
and display Old Glory appropriately.
Besides a brush-up on those rules,
the council also will consider adopting
a local policy for the flag to be flown at
half-mast in recognition of the passing
of public employees or local officials.

ed on their dugout wall;
We. are hard-pressep on every
side, but not crushed; perplexed,
but not in despair; persecuted,
but not abandoned; stuck down,
but not destroyed.
In the end, the host Mustangs
lost to Artesia, 8-1, in the first
round of the Pride of the Coast
Tournament.
But their chins never dropped.
And if passion has anything to do
with it, the Mustangs (1-12)
haven't lost yet
Where it counts in the score-
book, the 'Stangs had two ques-
tionable calls go against them,
while their hurlers combined to
hit six Artesia batters with pitch-
es, the primary reasons for their
downfall.
But Mesa third baseman Scott
Smith did his best Brooks Robin-
son interpretation and right field-
er Freenoel Sok made a sprawl-
ing, diving catch to save two
runs, both plays coming late in
the game while the Mustangs
were already in a seven-nm hole.
These are the same players,
keep in mind, who didn't want to
go home earlier in the day when
the rain forced a 30-minute delay .
•we're not giving up,• said
Bauermeister, whose team hosts
Newport Harbor today at 11 a.m.
On the mound, Mesa reliever
Nick Lambert pitched 3 113
innings without yielding a hit or
run in just his second outing of
the season.
Lambert retired the only two
batters he faced in a brief stint
against Laguna Beach a week
earlier.
Following a scoreless first
inning, the game was stopped
with Artesia's Derek Feenstra at
the plate with a 1-1 count leading
off the second. When play
resumed, Feenstra was hit by the
first pitch, triggering a two-run
Pioneer rally.
Artesia (4-6) received two
walks and a hit batter to load the
sacks in the first, but the
Mustangs' starting pitcher Josh
