SANrA ANA -Attorneys for
the Orange County Fairgrounds
on Monday urged a Supenor

on Pacific Amphitheatre and allow

that runs the fairgrounds,
bought the 18,500-seat amphi-
theater in 1993 from the Neder-

wide concert promoter
But after two years and several
failed attempts to use the facility
under court-imposed sound re-

neighboring residents, fair offi-

claim the promoter knowingly

always has piqued my curiosity,

Of all the Bandel children, J
know Tom the best. Several of
the boys were regulars at Little
Corona, including Fred,
Eugene, Red Dog (Ttmmy) and
Tom. This was before Newport
Beach ruined Little Corona by
building a darn at the back of
the beach. In the pre-darn days,
the beach was wide enough to
sport a volleyball court. Tom

although I was far and away
the worst volleyball player on
the beach, not to mention that I
was about 30 years older than
the rest of the players.
Back to how they did it.
According to Tom, the routine
went something like this. His
mother got' up first and mixed
up a huge pot of something for
breakfast, first feeding Tom's
father so he could go to work.
The younger children were (ed
as they arose, then the older
ones until the pot was empty.
Lunch was not as well-orga-
nized. Everyone was on his or
her own. Dinner was a sit-down
affair in which the whole tribe
sat at the tat;>le. That must have
been quite a sight.
Sleeping was in multistory
bunks, of course.
The family afforded each
child a home, food and shelter.
Anything above that, each
child earned. Each had a job. If
Tom showed up with a new
pair of swim fins, you knew he
had bought them with his own
money.
The only ones I knew were
the Little Corona contingent,
\
and they were fine athletes,
excellent bodysurfers, swim-
mers and skin divers. The girls 1
didn't know because none of
them came to Little Corona. But
my daughter, Nancy, tells me
that one of the girls was in her
class in high school. Mary Anita
Bandel, not surprisingly, was an
outstanding athlete -small,
wiry and highly competitive.
Almost all the Bandels went
to junior college, and most went
on to college. All have suc-
ceeded in the adult world.
I never knew either Ray-
mond or Betty Bandel, although
we were fairly close neighbors
for several years. That was my
loss. They must have been
remarkable people. Most of us
consider the rearing of two or
three children a major task, and
too many do a lousy job of it.
The Bande~· story is one of
character, guidance, patience,
discipline and example.
Let Capistrano have its mis-
sion and Anaheim its Disney-
land. We have the Bandels.

to avoid prosecution for building
code violations on a Costa Mesa
apartment building.

Mann said several residents
have written letters to the City
Council expressing their opposi-
tion to a relocation, complete
with signatures from even more
people who want to see the
library and fire station stay put.
But Hedges said there is no
good reason not to at least look
at the possibility.
The committee also got
updates on signs, streets and
parking as part of the ongoing
effort to spruce up Balboa
Peninsula:
• A sign study conducted b'~
city staff revealed that more
than 66% of commercial signs
on the peninsula are illegal or
do not have a proper city permit.
The revitalization committee
directed the city staff to come up
with some alternatives to tack.le
the problem. Hedges said the
issue likely will go to the City
Council at its April 27 meeting.
• The planned Balboa Boule-
vard reconstruction between
Main and G streets has been
delayed until after summer.
That portion as well as another
section of the road will be com-
pleted under the budget for the
·· 1998-99 fiscal year.
• Work still is continuing on a
parking management program
for the peninsula, with the first
public meeting on the study
;. 5cheduled May 4 . The parking

ot the peninsula revitalization

locals named to the South squad for the
39th Orange County All-Star Football

College.
Joining Baker on Tustin High Coach
Myron Miller's Rebels will be Harbor team-
mates Pete Hogan and Derek Fox, Costa
Mesa standout Jeremy Via and Estancia
lineman John Llebengood.
The quintet of locals were selected by
sportswriters from those nominated by 37
South schools to round out the 36-member
squad. The South will take on the top play-
ers from the North at OCC, with kickoff set
for 7: 15 p.m.
Baker, All-CrF Southern Section Divi-
sion V pick, starred at tailback and corner-
back for the Division V semifinalists, and is
expected to contribute primarily on
defense for Miller, a former Costa Mesa
High head coach.
The 5-foot-11 , 185-pound Baker led the
county with nine interceptions and is cur-
rently contemplating pursuing opportuni-
ties to play next fall at Cal Poly San Luis
Obisbo and Colorado State.
Baker Fox · Hogan • Via Uebengood
Baker rushed for 1,877 yards on
307 carries, caught 11 passes for 126 yards
and scored a school single-season-record
30 touchdowns. His duty as a return spe-
cialist contributed to his 2,993 all-purpose
yards.
Hogan, a 6-4, 225-pounder who played
middle linebacker and tight end in his third
varsity season, was the Newport-Mesa Dis-
trict Defensive Player of the Year as well as
an All-CIF pick. The Colorado State-bound
standout, expected to move to defensive
end for the Rams, was in on 139 tackles
(10.7 per contest), including eight stops
behind the line of scrimmage and two
sacks. He also caught 21 passes for 167
yards.
Miller projects Hogan as a defensive

and amassed 18 quarterback hurries. The
OCC-bound
standout also had 10 tackles for losses.
Fox will compete for playing time on the
defensive line, where Miller likes his abili-
ty to thwart the charge of opposing block-
ers with his size and strength.
Via, the district's most dominant offen-
sive lineman, can play guard or tack.le for
Miller, who first learned about Via's
prowess while coaching at Mesa. A 6-2,
275-pounder, Via was twice all-district and
All-Pacific Coast League. He plans to play
at OCC next fall.
Liebengood, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound two-
way lineman, was among two players
selected to play center in Miller's smash-
mouth double wing. Miller will count on
Liebengood to back up San Clemente
High's Robert Richardson in the middle of
his double-tight formation.
He earned All-PCL and all-district acco-
lades last fall as a versatile
contributor to the Eagles offensive and
defensive lines.
Other marquee players chosen to repre-

Newport Harbor secures
12-7 win in 11 innings
after Costa Mesa rallies
from a 7-1 deficit.
By Barry Faulkner. Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -Scott Beerer
saved Newport Harbor High
Monday, even though it meant
the Sailors' baseball standout
couldn't save his pitching arm.
Beerer, a sophomore, came on
in relief in the sixth inning of f1
Pride of the Coast Tournament
pool-play clash at Costa Mesa,
after Harbor had seen the Mus-
tangs erase its 7-1 lead.
The hard-th.rowing right-han-
der, whom Sailors Coach Jim
Kiefer would have preferred to
save for a start later in the ongo-
ing tournament, went on to strike
out 11 in 5 113 shutout innings,
eventually picking up the victory
when the Tars scored five in the
11th to claim a 12-7 verdict.
"(Beerer) picked up his team-
mates when he had to.• Kiefer
said. •He had some big strikeouts
and he really battled for us.•
Beerer, who helped key a 7-1
tournament victory over Bolsa
Grande Saturday with strong
glove work at shortstop, also dou-
bled twice against Mesa. His sec-
ond two-bagger, which followed a
leadoff walk to Nick Langsdorf,
kick-started the five-run outburst
that ended a five-inning scoreless
streak for the visitors.
After Beerer's blow, just inside
third base, Mesa Coach Kirk
Bauermeister elected to intention-
ally walk Lucas Kerr to load the
bases and set up a force at any
base.
Justin Jacobs then drew four

balls to push in the eventual
game-winner and, just to be sure,
Chad Smith followed with an RBI
groundout, Scott Crane doubled
in a run and Charlie Waite plated
two more with his second double.
Langsdorf and Shawn O'Don-
nell each smacked two-run
homers and Smith drove in two
more with a fifth-inning single to
help the Tars build a six-run
bulge behind starter O'Donnell,
who yielded just three hits and
one run (a Nick Lambert solo
homer) in four quality innings.
But Kiefer went to the bullpen
to start the filth and the Mustangs
started teeing off.
Two ·Harbor errors led to three
unearned Mesa runs in the fifth
and Josh Little socked a three-run
dinger to knot the score with one
out in the sixth.
Beerer, however, used some
heat to quickly douse the flame,
ending the inning with an infield
pop and a strikeout. He fanned
the side in the sixth and seventh
and made it eight straight outs via
the whiff to start the ninth.
Mesa (1-13) put 11 runners on
in the final four frames, but

stranded eight and left 14 on base
for the day.
Jimmy Herzog led the Mus-
tangs' 12-hit attack, going 4 for 6
with a double. He reached base
all six plate appea.rances and
scored twice.
The win was the second
straight for Harbor (5-10), but
Kiefer was less than euphoric.
"It was an ugly win. When you
have a 7-1 lead, you need to put
people away. We made some lazy
errors and gave up too many
walks. We keep shooting our-
selves in the foot and we're not
talented enough to get by wheD
we do that. But we're 2-0 in th•

For Trump Coup Tommy, making
contracts when the trumps' were
stacked against him had become a
way of life. l.odecd, his panncrs only
worried when everything wu break·
ing normally, for in those CMCS Tom·
my reverted to being a card pusher
and frequently went down in con·
tracts a novice could claim.
By ,Partnership agrumcnt, Tom·
my's JUIDP to duce hearts was fore·
ing. East knew Tommy well enough
to know that, despite partner's open·
ing bid and rebid, his holding of six
trumps was a liability mher than an
asset.
West led the king of spades and
continued with the ace, fetching the queen from East as Tommy ruffed. A
trump to the ace brought a spade' dis·
card from West and a sigh of satis-
faction from Tommy .
It seemed as if Toouny three losers
io the red suits in addition to the
spade already cooc:eded. but Tommy
proved everyone wrons. Since a
spade could oot be ruffed t"""""i•"'·
ly lest East make a killing discard..
declarer caroc to bMd with the king
of diamonds. successfuJly fmessed
the queen of cJubs, ~ to band
with the ace of diunonds and thc:n
encaed dummy wilh the ace of dubs..
Reading the position perfectly. Tom-
my ruffed a club in hand with the
seven of trumps and exited with a
diamond. Both defenders won that
trick as West produced a high dia·
mond and East was forced to ruff .
Declarer captured East's jack of
hcat1s exit with the qlJC!Cll and led the
remaining dia.mood. Eut bad IO ruff
again. and was forced to lead a heart
away from 10 8 into declarer's K 9
tenace. The wunderkind lost only
one spodc' trick and two ruffs!
