' The stuffed sailfish that's hung on the wall of the Channel Reef lobby for three decades is mounted there again -but now it's bolted there and equipped with an alann. The somewhat strict security measures are the result of the crazy caper earlier this year in which the 9-foot, blue-colored fish was stolen, reportedly by two alleged #squatters" who'd been evicted and took the mounted sea specimen as a going-away gift. A month later. the fish was found -with a fin and its bill snapped off -inside the thieves' van in South County. Its parts repaired, the long-suf- ferin' fish is now back at its perch, so to speak. Af'Rll 8, 1996 ;one fever that 8.lways feels good L ate last Sunday after- noon, my young sons and I experienced a syn- chronized attack of spring fever. As if hearing a march- ing band off in the distance, w;e sensed that we belonged anywhere but on the family room sofa . And, so, we set off for our neighborhood park. As we strolled down the street the breeze swirled around our ankles and quickened our step. There was something in the air. It didn't feel warm or cool. It felt fresh and right. We could see a dozen kites darting about in the sky like colorful klieg lights announc- ing the premiere of nature's most glorious season. The park was full of fami- lies and fnends who were sim- ilarly bitten by the spring bug. My sons shot off in different directions and l took a seat on the bench and drank it all in. These are the moods filmmak- ers spend millions of dollars to try and capture. A young mother sat cross- legged in the sand gently pushing her baby daughter in a bucket swing. Every lime the baby swung back towards her, the mother llclded her toes and chanted, "say ma-ma; say ma-ma; say ma-ma " The baby gurgled and kicked with delight. Two young boys stood at the top of the Jungle gym. poised for a pratfall, and shouted, "Mom, look! Look, Mom! Mom, Mom, Mom, watch! MOOOOOOOOOM!" Their mother appeared to be happily and obliviously engrossed in a conversation p~ggy normandin at the picnic table. A little girl with floppy curls bounced over to me and asked if she could pet my dog. "Of course," I said, "she's very gentle.· The little girl bent over and embraced our dog Kit around the neck with such force that both she and Kit Jost their bal- ance. uoops,. she said and trun- dled away clapping her hands and calling, "Dadddeeee, l petted the doggeeel • The park was more alive than I had ever seen it. Per- haps because the mommies and daddies were there, instead of the housekeepers and baby sitters. Here on this intoxicating spring day, man. woman and child were answering Mother Nature's census call to come out and be counted among the living. A multi-generational family had spread a large blanket out on the grass and were peeling oranges and apples with a European-style elegance. They were all dressed up in their Sunday "church clothes• and the. adolescent brother and sister were given pennis- sion to put on their roller blades and skate around the cement path as long as they "were careful." On another blanket, some teenagers were telling secrets into each other's ears. Their giggles were carried on the wind and dispersed amony the crowds so that everyone around the park, perhaps unknowingly, wore a faint smile. A barbecue was ignited. A pinata was batted. A golden retriever leaped up and devoured a soaring frisbee. And the kites whirred over- head. Somewhere off beyond my senses, traffic jams were stewing, computer drives were crashing and toxins were infiltrating the atmos- phere. But, here in the park on this Sunday afternoon where sprmg had restored mirth among neighbors. I believed the earth would con- tinue spinning correctly on its axis, that I would live to see my children's children and that dinner would be ready on the table when I returned home. My mother used to borrow a verse from Robert Browning to express such ephemeral con- tentment. "God's in His heaven,• she would sigh. "All's right with the world." • PEGGY NORMANDIN's Time Out column appears Mondays. Some people might call it misery -to be away from the comfort of their own home, family, friends, husbands, wives, away from the ease of their own bed and bathroom. Then, some may call it torture to lie awake at night, fatigued but unable to ignore the aching of sore, tight muscles, only to look forward to yet another relentless workout just eight very short hours away. I call it a challenge, a Challenge that each member on this Olympic team has chosen to accept as the difference between excellence and mediocrity.
