NEWPORT BEACH -Long
before this weekend, Leigh Stein-
berg was already the undisputed
king of sports agents, having rep-
resented six of the last nine No. 1
picks in the National Football
League college draft.
His roster of professional play-
ers -about 70 football, 40 base-
ball, eight basketball and a hand-
ful of others -reads like a future
hall of fame induction ceremony.
San Francisco 49ers quarter-
back Steve Young, New York
Knicks guard John Starks and
miniature Olympic gymnast Kerri
Strug all call on Steinberg for
career advice.
But over the weekend, the
Newport Beach sports agent and
real-life inspiration for Tom
Cruise's on-screen ~Jerry Ma-
guire;~ added a few more human
trophies to his impressive and
ever-growing collection.
During the
two-day draft
held in New
'York City,
Steinberg
clients Ryan
Leaf, a standout
quarterbac k
with the Wash-
ington State
Cougars, and Lelgh
Ah.man Green,
a running back Steinberg
for the Neb-
raska Com.huskers, were drafted.
Leaf was the second player tak-
en in the draft when the San Diego
Chargers picked him, but Green
bad to wait several hours until the
third round to hear his name called
by the Seattle Seahawk.s.
A third Steinberg chent,
Huntington Beach nallve and
Arizona State offensive guard
Kyle Murphy, was not drafted,
but be could still earn a spot on
an opening day roster as a wdlk-
on with any pro team.
Of Steinberg's three clients -
which was fewer than normal,
but a calculated move designed
to give Steinberg and partner
Jeffrey Moorad more time to
focus on signing pro basketball
players -Leaf was by far the
most celebrated.
The 6-foot-5, 250-pound Leaf
was expected to be either the first
pick of the Indianapolis Colts or
the second choice of the Chargers,
Wlth Tennessee quarterback Pey-
ton Manning taking the other spot.
But on Saturday morning,
when league commissioner Paul
Tdgltabue read Manning's name
first, Steinberg was neither disap-
pointed nor surprised.
Leaf had expressed a prefer-
ence for San Diego, so Steinberg

iCity Council discusses

By Tim Grenda, Datly Pilot
COSTA MESA -The City
Council torught 1s set'to consider
~whether to bwld skateboarding
: ctreas m two city parks and tern-
• noranly Wt the city's 10 p.m.
·teen curfew because it may be
unconstitutional.
Two weeks ago, the Parks
. Commission unanimously rec-
; ommended that the city get
•rolling on plans to build separate
, areas in two parks where skate-
. boarders could legally practice
their sport.
City laws forbid skateboard-
ing m most public areas, so the
commission advised building
a reas wllh concrete curbs,
benches and hand rails, all of
wh1ch are popular with skate-
boarders.
The commission recommend-
ed that two sites be developed,
one m Lions Park between Park
and Pomona avenues, with the
location or the second site left up
to the cliscretion or the council.
The city staff is recommend-
ing that the council move ahead
The talk about
building city-owned

was prompted by
two new state laws
that went into effect
in January. •
with building two sites. Based on
discussions with officials in Mis-
sion Viejo, which is building a
larger skateboard park, a Costa
Mesa facility of between 3,000
and 4,000 square feet would cost
about $80,000 each.
Staff members also are rec-
ommending that the height of
handrails and other objects in
the park be kept under 18 inch-
es to limit injuries.
The talk about building city-
owned skateboard parks was
prompted by two new state laws
that went into effect in January.
The laws limit cities' liability
for skateboarding injuries as
long as the skateboard parks
have signs stating the area is
·unsupervised and that safety
equipment must be worn. Police
then can cite skateboarders who
fail to play by the rules
If the council approves the
concept of developing skate-
board parks, the next step would
be to hire an architect to design
them.
In other action, the council is
set to consider a recommenda-
tion from its city attorney to lift
the 10 p.m. curfew because it
may be illegal. .
San Diego's teen curfew
recently was challenged in court
and found to be unconstitution-
al.
Upon review of their own 38-
year-old teen curfew law, local
officials found it contains similar
language as San Diego. so City
Attorney Tom Kathe has asked
the City Council to take the cur-
few off the books until a new
one can be written.
If the council agrees, police
could stop citing minors found in
public places, including private
businesses, between 10 p.m. and
6 a.m., officials said.
Minors who are with an adult,
have their parent's permission to
be out or are working at the
tune, are exempted from the cur-
few. .
Deputy City Attorney Jerry
Scheer said it could take six
weeks for the council to get a
new curfew in place and put it
into effect.
1 he City Council meeting will
be at 6:30 p.m. in the City Coun-
cil chambers at 77 Fair Drive.

Lawsuit to go
to trial Aug. 10
A lawsuit filed by Karl
Wolonksy against Newport
Beach and the Eastbluff Home-
owners Association after his
wife, Tracy, was killed in a traffic
accident at an Eastbluff intersec-
tion will go to trial Aug. 10.
Chris Woodward, Wolonsky's
attorney, said a Santa Ana Supe-
rior Court Judge granted a con-
tinuance 9f the trial, which orig-
inally was set to bajin May 26.
He said he expects attorneys
for the city in the next few months
to file a motion for summary judg-
ment, which would prevent the
case from going to trial. But
Woodward said he is confident
the case will go to court.
The lawsuit claims that a vari-
ety of unsafe conditions at the in-
tersection of Bison Avenue and
Jamboree Road contributed to na-
cy Wolosky's death May 4, 1996.

gladly took the dunmer spotlight
of the number two spot for the
longterm benefit of his client.
•Qur theory is, five minutes of run on draft day versus 10 years of
tun on the field,• Steinberg said.
Tue draft capped a hectic peri-
od which Steinberg affectionately
dubs •zoo time" -several weeks
of frenzied phone calls, back-
and-forth negotiations with team
owners, media interviews and
meetings with his clients.
Starting in January with the
Aloha Bowl -the college equiv-
alent of the Pro Bowl -and oth-
er college all-star games, Stein-
berg s tarts to schmooze with
prospective clients.
With an impressive list of pro-
fessional players, Sternberg is
able to skim the cream of the top
of the incoming class of rookies
and take only the best.
"Luckily, we're able to repre-
sent only those clients,• he silld.
But in a game with high stakes
and even higher salanes, choos-
111g the people who negotiate
new contracts, deal with the
media and generally manage
careers has become a virludl sci-
ence.
Even before Dallas Cowboys
quarterback Troy Aikman left
UCLA for the professional ranks
in 1989, Steinberg was vying to
be his agent.
He was eventuall y hired, but
not before an intense round of
questioning by attorneys,
accountants and others hired by
Aikman to screen potential
agents.
"At the end of 1t, I could have
been confirmed for secretary of
state," Steinberg recalled.
By the time try-outs with pro-
fessional teams called combines
roll around in March and April,
Steinberg has pretty much nar-
rowed down the field and signed
his pro candidates.
Now, he can now focus on
making them look good.
·we want to make sure that
our guy shows his strengths and
works on his wea knesses or
faults,· Steinberg said . "We're
attempting to showcase a player
the best way we can.·
In private meetings with pro
coaches and general managers
before the draft, Steinberg gets a
feel for who needs what and
then hypes his players lo fill the
holes.
·we kind of keep tabs on how
our guys are doing m the
ptocess," he said.

came to represent Leaf, who left
Washington State a year early to
try his luck with the pros, is pret-
ty typical of how Steinberg
meets most of his clients.
Last Novernber1 Steinberg got
a call Crom the college star and
the Sunday after Thanksgiving,
Steinberg arranged lo fly up to
the Leaf family home 111 Great
Falls, Montana to give the sales
pitch. .
Gathered around the family's
dining room table, Steinberg
went over the presentation he has
gwen to dozens of other college
athletes poised to make millions
who asked, "What can you do fo r
me?"
Steinberg fielded pointed
questions from Leaf's parents and
over the weekend, he and the
quarterback bonded while
watching professional football
games.
On January 2·, the day after
Leaf and the Cougars fell just
short of knocking off the lop-
ranked Michigan Wolverines in
the Rose Bowl, Leaf announced
he was leaving college and turn-
ing pro.
The same day, he mked a
deal for Steinberg to represent
him.
Within a few weeks, Leaf bad
moved into an apartment Stein-
berg arranged for hun in New-
port Beach and began working
out with the battery of nutrition,
fitness and agility experts Stein-
berg employs.
Along with other Steinberg
clients, Leaf spent the last few
months working out locally to
stay sharp and prepare for the
draft.
Hit's like a little fraternity,"
Steinberg said.
With all the trouble some pro
and college athletes land in -
drugs, drinking, fighting -
Steinberg said he is careful in
selecting who he represents.
•Professional athletes have a
profound effect on young peo-
ple," Steinberg said. "We're look-
ing for bright, student-body-pres-
ident type role models.·

is considered an authority in th~ sport.
By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA-Let's face it, not
every kid in the world who plays
tennis wants to dedicate their life to
the sport.
It's the Hank Lloyd's Spring Break High
School Championships, held for the first
time last week at Costa Mesa Tennis
Cent,er, the public facility which is now
operated by Lloyd.
As most of the top junior players
competed recently at the Easter Bowl in
Palm Springs, o prestigious international
junior tournament. there were 54 others,
who pethaps aren't quite up to champi-
onship caliber, playing in the area's first
organized junior tournament in recent
memory, gaining valuable experience
during spring break.
Each player competes in at least eight
matches. Beginning in a round-robin
format, players vie in ei~ht-game pro sets
against everyone in the draw, with the top
four in each division advancing to the
semifinals. The rest enter a consolation
bracket.
"This format gives everyone a variety
and a mwtitude of playing time," Lloyq
said.
Lloyd said another ideal reason this
year for coaches to enter their players in
the event is because of El N'mo, which has
washed out many matches.
"I hope coaches take advantage of it
(next year) and put it on th~ir school
calender,• he said. Not everyone is cut out to travel the
international junior circuit, employ
multiple coaches and serve 100 mph by
the time they're, say, 15. Not everyone, of
course, would want to, either. "This really works out for those who
really need competition and don't play
that much tournament tennis,• said Lloyd,
hoping to build from the 13-team field this
The War by the Shore, a top-notch
junior tournament for boys and girls which
is held every summer by the Balboa Bay
Club Racquet Club, is the only other
organized junior event in Costa Mesa and
Newport Beach. The Southern California
Junior Sectionals are played in June at
Los Caballeros Sports Village in Fountain
Valley.
The fees to participate in the
tournament ($15 for singles, $20 for dou-
bles) are nominal because Lloyd is only
interested in growing the sport and
attracting more juniors to it.
Finally, there's an outlet for the average
player, for the competitor interested in a
few extra matches without giving up a lot But Lloyd's spring-break tournament is

A. Should you introduce yoUJ ~u

A. Partner" s takeout double followed

What action do you take'!
A. We would bet our bottom dollar
that one spade doubled is not the best
spot to play this hand. so a rescue
opcrauon 1s an order. Thc way to go
about !has " to bid one no trump!
With a second suit, partner will bid a
minor. Should North pass. we would
be willing to play one no trump
undoubled. Should an opponent dou-

Therefore. you have to Jump lo three
