Schafnitz gets jail sentence Plan ·for El.Toro chosen • Newport Beach socialite pleads guilty to felony drug charges, ordered to spend 10 months behind bars. By Tim Grenda. Daily Piiot SANTA ANA -Newport Beach socialite Tina Schafnilz will spend 10 months in jail after pleading guilty Tuesday to three felony cha rges of selling a half- ounce of cocaine to an undercover Tustin police officer. A week after pleading not guilty to the same drug and weapons charges, Schafnitz changed her plea and admitted the drug deal with a narcotics detective March 16 outside an El Torito restaurant m Tustin. Schafrutz, 38, walked out of San- ta Ana Mumc1pal Court flanked by her husband, Matt, and attorney, Robert Newman She will remain free for at least another week. As pdrt or her sentence, Schafnitz was ordered to report Tuesday night to the women's Cen- tral County Jail in Santa Ana, where she likely will be assigned to another facility to serve her 10- monlh sentence, officials said. Where she will be jailed lS still unknown. Newmdn Sdld his client couJd buy her way into a pnvate jail in Seal Beach -where criminals must pay the cost of their own incarcera- tion -or more llkely be assigned to the county's mirumum-security jaLI m Lake Forest, commonly called "the farm.· Either way, Newman insisted his client will not spend more than a night in the county jail sleeping alongside other criminals. While Newman said his client had no comment on her sentence or the crime, Schafnitz repeatedly tried to held questions from reporters as she made her way from the courtroom to an elevator about 50 yards down the hall. With yes and no answers to reporters' quesllons, a smiling Schafnitz denied ever using cocaine, said she was set up by someone and believed she got a fair deal from the judge. 'But the woman who was a glamoro us fixture at Newport Beach society galas and charity fund-raisers seemed dazed and confused, which Newman later attributed lo prescription drugs she 1s taking to control a cliag- nosed bipolar disorder. The medical conclition creates emollonal feelings of increclible euphoria followed by deep depression and is commorLly treat- ed wllh the prescription drug Prozac, although Newman refused to say which medication his client IS taking. Newman said Schafnltz has been taking meclication since the day after her arrest, when she was freed on $25,000 bail and promptly checked into an Orange County live-in drug treatment facility, where she will remain until enter- ing jail next week. . Almost every week, obituaries and news and feature stories I read in the daily news- paper relate to people who crossed my life or events in which I participated. Sheppard's son recently got a court order to dig up his father's remdtnS to extract DNA samples that would prove the blood stains at the crime scene were not his. That brought back one of the strangest days I ever spent, with a medical doctor hued by Shep- pard's attorney to hypnotize Sheppdrd and regress him to the night of the murder. The doctor told me unequivocally that Shep- pard wa~ innocent and then added the-ndille of the real mur- derer, mformalion I couldn't use and didn't redlly want to know Then he hypnol.Jzed me when I suggested thdl he couldn't. 1 met Kedllng when 1 was domg a magazine piece about a prcs1dentidl commission studying the effects or pornography on our society. By Paul Clinton, Daily Piiot NEWPORT BEACH -The Newport Beach Conference and Visitors Bureau is among four agencies that will split $750,000 a year to adver- tise Orange County's recreational, cultural and business opportunities. Earlier this month, the BoMd of Supervisors approved a $2.25 million effort to promote areas of the county in the tounst trade over the next three years. The county asked the Newport Beach agency to work on the campaign with vis- itors bureaus in Anahetm, Buena Park and Huntington Beach. "It's great to be able to pdrtner with the other bureaus in Orange County, all of whlch offer something different for visitors," sa.td Rosalmd Williams, executive director of the Newport Beach Conference and Visitors Bureau The money came from a reserve fund set up as part of the county's recovery from hank.ruptcv. Williams said the functing proposal, authored by Supervisor William Sterner, is dn attempt to "do something to stimulate the economy.· It's an economy with tounsm deeply embed- ded in its spine. Nearly 58 million v1s1tors spent $5.6 billion inside countv lines in 1997. Califor- nia spends $7 million each year lo lure outsiders to the sunny weather. Williams said Orange County's clean-cul im- age is a big reason for the steady now of visitors. "It's a major concern to travel to a safe place," she said. "Newport Beach can unequivocally provide that safe atmosphere." Newport Beach Mayor Tom Edwards, who is a member of the El Toro Advisory Commission, characterized the county's action as positive both for bis city and South County. ~rm satisfied willi the decision because I think it environmental- ly preserves the process and plans adequately for the future expan- sion of the air traffic needs of the region, which 1 think is most important.~ he said. Plan C envisions 24 million pas- sengers a year at El Toro, 9.4 mil- lion at John Wayne and a high- speed people mover linking the two. It is the only alternative that projects John Wayne's passenger load to exceed the current cap of 8.4 million passengers per year. Plan B reflects what Newport Beach officials have advocated all along -keepi.ng John Wayne at status quo and putting an intema- t1ondl airport at El Toro. That plan forecasts El Toro at almost 29 mil- lion passengers a year and John Wayne at 5.4 million. John Wayne, wtuch has a departure lhght pdth dJiecUy over Newport Beach, now carpes about 7 mil- hon passengers per year. But Edwards said he is not par- ticularly concerned about the pro- JPctions because this is only the beginning of the detailed plan- ning process "II I httd my druthers. A Newport Beach favor B, but I think in keeping with the orlg!nal resolution by the board tn December 1996, plan C is better in tenns of the numbers,• Edwards said. "I would like to keep John Wayne at 8.<& (mWion) or less, but realistlcally we have to deal with it on a case-by-case basis. Frankly, it will end up being market-driven.• He said he hopes tbe county will be able to plan an airport a_t El Thro that carries 24 million passengers a year, as in plan C, without the peo- ple mover between El Toro and John Wayne, which he said doesn't make much financial sense. "I'm extremely positive about the whole process,~ Edwards said. wwe specifically included noise mitigation, curfews and did away with any use of Runway 25 -which should eliminate the noise concerns of South County." Richard Dixon, chairman of the El Toro Reuse Plarming Authority, said he still has concerns the county ultimately will decide on a massive international airport at El Toro and that officials will aban- don placing nighttime resbictions on the facility. He said, however, that he is happy there at least is a plan to debate. "Up until today, the airport has been a moving target," Dixon said. "Hopefully what's happened now is Orange County will get a closer definition of what an El Toro air- port will look like so we can legiti- mately begin discussion." The county's move Tuesday was unexpected. The board origi- nally was not going to decide on a preferred plan until after the four options were taken on the road to the general public. Edwatds said the advisory commission urged the board to choose a comb~llon ol plans C and B at Tuesday's meeting because it was crud.al for the county to take a stand on its direc- tion with El Toro. •South County people have been hammered by this idea that it's going to be a 38 million-annu- al-passenger airport at El Toro,• Edwards said. ·1 think it was im- portant to send the signal of, 'This is one that's not going to happen.'• But Wilson, the 5th District supervisor who has been a staunch airport foe since he was appointed to the board in 1996, said he would have rather seen the county exercise more discre- tion on choosing a preferred plan. ·1 didn't expect to take a vote today,• Wilson said. ·1 felt for us to tak~ a position on any size avi- ation was . very premature. The ink is barely dry on the four plans and people haven't bad a chance to thoroughly review them. Any- thing today would boil down to personal opinion.• An interesting development in the meeting was a motion by Wil- son -seconded by Spitzer -to adopt plan A as the preferred option. That plan would establish a 19 million-annual-passenger airport at El Toro with intemation- aJ flights limited to Mexico and western Canada. Wilson said he still fully sup- ports the Millennium Plan, a non- aviation proposal by South County cities to create. a large central park at the El Toro base along with a New Lower Rates 4-:L-981 • Absolutely No broker or Policy Fees • Quality Personalized Service • Family Owned Agency • Established In 1927 Lic#0550290 MERCURY INSURANCE CO. OCC doomed, 12-8 COSTA MESA BASEBALL Four errors committed by Orange Coast College in the ninth inning helped visiting Fullerton break away from an 8-8 deadlock and put up four runs en route to a 12- 8 Orange Empire Conference wm, m what may have dashed the Pirates' hope of qualifying for postseason action. After a sloppy seesaw affair, the Bucs {18-18, 7-13 1.0 confer- e nce) tied the score at 8-8 in the bottom of the eighth when Darren Chandler's smgle drove in a run. But, with Jon Fenoglio on the mound, Fullerton's Bo Bryant ripped a triple to score Nik Gar- cia. Then, thanks to four Coast errors, the Hornets (18-17-1, 7-12) added three inswance runs. oaANG1 awom mrtl"'DE.NCE ~ 12, 0.&NGE CoAsJ 8 Fullerton 300 041 004 • 12 14 6 Orange Coast 120 202 010 -8 10 6 Hostetlef, Tlmanus (9) and Kane, Lawnsdale (5); Shwam, McDermott, Fenoglio and Lukin. Operung lead: Four of '\? Yesterday, we fcanlrcd a decepove play by declarer on what could be the Hand of the Y car for 1998. Here is an cumple of knavery by a dcfenda that coufd well be 1998's Defense of the Year. Silting East and West were two f!1Cmbcrs of the Norwegian intema- ttonal tum, Tor Helness and Geir Hclgcmo, rcs~vely. Interesting to note is East s introduction of the four-card bean suit despite holding live-card support for partner's suit. That action set the stage for what was to transpire in the play. West's double of two diamonds was prcsum- ably a Support Double, showing specifically three-card support for partner's heart suit. All this bidding on a band where neither side held a prepondcraocc of the h.igb cards bad one desirable benefit for East-West. It prevented the opposition from finding an exccUcnt four~spadc con- lraet, which would have produced al least I 0 triclts. ., Against five diamonds. Helgemo found the brilliant opening lead of a low heart away from the acc. &st' s king won, and Helncss now did his part by shifting to the four of dia· moods! Consider the hand from South's point of view. From the play to the first tric.lc, it appeared tbal East held the ace and king of hearts. West had opened the bidding and competed further with at most 11 poiots in ~ c:an:ls. Since West surely bad IO hold the king of diamonds. the only chance for the coolnet, therefore, appeared to bring down the king of d18monds singleton.
