comments are simply that how
can we expect students who are
in need of the services, in need
of medical care, counseling or

our schools and to learn?
Isn't the goal of our school
system to provide a more edu-

We need to look and not say

It's not the purpose of the schools

k.d. lang gig spans the musical genres
By Todd Aaron Jensen, Daily Pilot
"My concerts are conventions for the
unconventional," k .d. lang announced at
the onset of her seductive, (literally) bub-
bling two-hour set at the Performing Arts
Center Friday, a perlonnance buoyed by
the singer's rapier wit, full-throttle passion,
musical genre bending and a voice from
beyond the beyond.
By evening's end, this crowd of 3,000
• unconventionals • had been lifted, loved,
and liberated by one of music's most pow-
erful and unique songstresses.
Casually ilitting between genres (jazz.
country, funk and pop) and characters
(beauty queen, cowboy, hula dancer, and
what may be the best Elvis impersonation
of the year), lang was hf!r own mistress of
ceremonies, a hostess most at home on her
red and lavender-soaked stage, twirling,
bobbing, soaring, pirouetting, raging
against a tide of bubbles (on a showst.op-
ping "Miss Chatelaine"). .
Dressed in a black long coat, red under-
shirt, studded black pants and ruby tennies,
lang commanded the stage from her over-
sized entrance, silhouetted against a red.
curtain, crooning the funkified groove of k.d. lang
"Sexuality," from her latest album, •All You .
Can Eat." · •
Lingering playfully between songs, mak-
ing bowitiful eye contact with her audi-
ence, lang played through most of the new
album, paid a kitschy three-song homage to
her "former life as a country singer" and
soared on a few covers, notably Tom Jones'
"What's New, Pussycat?" the double enten-
dres especially delicious, dripping from the
lips of an avowed lesbian, and the Roy
Orbison standard, "Crying."
On the latter song, lang demonstrated a
vocal range, command and style that
brought more than a tear to one critic's eyes
and the entire house to its feet.
"Mariah who?" lang said at one point in
the performance, poking fun at singer Mari-
ah Carey who left the Gram.my's empty-
handed.
Throughout an evening of sequential
highpoints, lang purred along the narrow,
not always straight, border between high
camp and deep spirituality with decidedly
positive results.

study for East Side
•Members seek consultant and form ad hoc committee
to address questions of speed humps and stop signs.
By Tina Borgatta, Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -The City
Council on Monday gave City
Hall traffic department staffers
the green light to begin seeking
proposals from consultants to
conduct an East Side traffic study.
The council also authonzed
the formation of an ad hoc com-
mittee made up of residents who
will provide s11ggestions and
feedback to the consultants.
City officials hope the study
will be helpful in identifying solu-
tions to some of the ·area's traffic
problems, including ways to keep I
commuters on commercial road-
ways like 17th Street. and New-
port Boulevard instead of using
residential streets as shortcuts to
the Costa Mesa Freeway and
Coast Highway.
, It will also review the feasibili-
ty of using speed humps and stop
signs to control speed in some
areas of the East Side, such as on
Westminster Avenue and Wilson
Street.
Staffers estimate the cost of the
study to run about $30,000.
"The study itself
would be very
detailed and would
take approximately
six to eight months to
complete, simply ·
because of the
amount of informa-
tion and data that
would be collected ... "
-WILLIAM MORRIS
Moms said it would take city
staffers about twice as long to
conduct the same study. mainly
because of a lack of manpower.
LEAH HOGSTEN I DAILY PILOT
"No burgers, no fries, just taxes," said John Duarte of the drive through taX drop at the Costa Mesa Post Office Mon-
day. Duarte was all smiles as Christina McDonald pedaled through the line to make the April 15 tax deadllne.
"The study itself would be
very detailed and would take
approximately six to eight months
to complete, simply because of
the amount of information and
data that would be collected.•
Costa Mesa Public Services direc-
tor William Morris told the council
during its Monday night meeting
The study will look at traffic
patterns on streets bordered by
Newport Boulevard, Mesa Drive,
Irvine Avenue and 17th Street.
Staff l.nitially suggested a smaller
study drea that only would have
extended north to 19th Street.
~ut residents urged the council
to include all of the city's East
Side, using Mesa Dnve as the
northern border
Heinz Kaiser's patriotism was without question
"To go any shorter than that
would be a (dissefVlce) to the res-
idents,• said Wilson Street resi-
dent Mlke Dunlevie
H einz Kaiser was one of the
better people.
Heinz had been a chef at one
of the big Los Angeles botel6. He
saved a few dollars and bought a
small trailer park/campground
{lO<=ated on the bay directly
DE!fow the Castaways bluff).
1 There he rented space for
trailers or tents, sold gasoline to
boaters and passing motorists
arid built and operated a small
cafe. He prospered. His restau-
ran_t became very popular. No
le5s a character than the some-
what reclusive James Irvine
caine down regularly to eat
Heinz's clam chowder. He and
Heinz became dose friends.
Incidentally, old timers still
claim that Heinz Kaiser's darn
chowder was the best in the
world .
Heinz lived in Costa Mesa. He
quickly became a conununity
leader and was very active in the
campaign to incorporate that
area into a city.
In 1950, Heinz Kaiser, about as unlikely a politician as one
can imagine, w~ elected to the
Board of Supervisors from this
district. There he served with dis-
tinction until his death in 1957.
After his death a school was
named in his honor in Costa
Mesa.
All in all, Heinz Kaiser was
just about as good a man as
could be imagined, a man of
unquestioned cha,racter.
Now I backtrack to World War n.
I do not remember whether
Heinz was born in Germany or
not but he certainly spoke with
an accent and his name was
about as German as one can
imagine.
When war hysteria took over,
anyone with a German or a

Japanese name became an
instant suspect. Poor Soto
Nishikawa, who for years, oper-

Street in Balboa became a sus-
pect and was shwmed by all his
old friends. However, Heinz
Kaiser by reason of his communi-
ty leadership was above suspi-
cion. Or at least so I thought.
Immediately before and dur-
ing the early days of that war I
was an officer in the office of
naval intelligence. One of our
jobs was doing background
checks on naval personnel in
sensitive positions. In doing those
checks we had a limited access
to the FBI files. We had acces~ to
reports by the FBI's confidential
informants but not to the infor-
mants themselves.
I was prowling through those
files one day and came on a card
that read, •According to a confi-
dential informant, Heinz Kaiser
of Costa Mesa, California, is a
Nazi sympathizer."
Having a report in those files
was no laughing matter. Every-
one who had any dealing with
the government was checked
through those files.

That report made me mad.
There was no way to get it out of
the files but I did the best I could.
I borrowed a typewriter from the

blacken the character of a man
who in the eyes of the rest of the
community is above suspicion."

I 'm completely against Wendy
Leece and people who are repre-
sentative of thinking like her. I
think she is completely ignorant of
the issues that are faced by these
families and these children and
their ability to get services.
Statistically. it is proven over and
over again, how many of these pro-
grams have enabled children to do
better in school and doing better in
school is a whole lot better than
putting them into jails. As one per-
son put it, they won't spend $10,000 ·
on a program for children but they'll
spend $10 million to bui).d a prison.
There's a book by Jonathan Kozol,
it's called "Amazing Grace." It
addresses the issue of disparity
between living in a wealthy neigh-
borhood and having services and not.

PRICETAG DOES N'T COME CHEAP
> Payoffs down the line for those that make the
grade are the big lure ... what has already been
there has escalated into an even higher bracket.
T here are families with
total incomes equal to
the amount spent
each year on tennis
for other families'
children.
The majority of juniors in a
recent swvey also indicated that
their commitment to a college
and pro career has forced them
to give up a great measure of
their personal life and has placed
a huge financial strain on their
families.
One of the most revealing
statistics in the survey released
last week at the Easter Bowl
4uruor Tennis Championships,
administered by the event's
founder, Seena Hamilton, is that,
despite massive grassroots efforts
to broaden the game, money is
still the dominant factor in
raising a junior tournament
player in the 1990s.
These, along with other
findings, no doubt force a
lower-to middle-income family
to think twice about raising their
child in tennis.
The survey of more than 1,000
top-ranked junior players
throughout the United States
gives an interesting overview of
what it takes to become the next
Michael Chang or Monica Seles.
•One of the biggest changes
in the game has been the
number of youngsters coming to
the Easter Bowl with private
coaches and the number
attending full-time academies,•
said Hamilton, who has operated
the Baster Bowl for 28 years.
"And for those with top-ten
rankings, the extent of
international travel, often during
the.academic year, has greatly
increased.• .
(he's going to Stanford next
season), he's forced to do school
work ahead of time, indepen-
dently or during the summer to
catch up. There have been times
when Abrams bas had bis school
work faxed to him by friends
across the country.
In the survey, while 51 % of
these families earn over $80,000
a year, 35 % are spending
between $10,000 and $25,000 a
year on their childrens tennis.
Ahnost all say that $25,000 was
more like it.
Of the juniors, 62 % are
playing at private clubs,
89% have private coaches and
19% practice at junior academies.
The country's tournament
juniors are a gifted group both
in tennis and academia with 90%
having a 3.0.GPA or higher and
40% at 4.0. Of the players, 40%
have accomplished this despite
having missed more than 30
hows of school, with II14lly
adding that they missed much
more.
1bis is a group (91 %) that
admits to making great personal
sacrifices to pursue their tennis,
giving up a social life, missing
their friends. But they're also
aware of their family's support
and sacrifices.
Over 75% said their parents
made financial sacrifices to
help their tennis and 64 o/o said
their parents let them know it at
one time or another.
Somewhat surprising, only
35 o/o admitted there was
pressure on them to do well,
while 62% said there was no
pressure.
There was a dif:f erent
response to whether or not it
would create tension if they quit
playing tennis: 17% said yes,
25% maybe and 56% no.
r ichard
d unn
feelings of responsibility and (or)
guilt if they were to walk away
from the game.
One written response said
their parents "would feel very
disappointed if I quit because of
all the money they have invested
in me.•
Another responded by saying
"my dad would have to find
another hobby, -while another
said their parents "would feel
that all the money went dQwn
the drain..•
T he most common
denominator was that the
money and effort had been made
to pay for college and for many a
career in tennis.
"The big money in pro tennis
has had a profound effect on
juniors and their families,•
Hamilton said. "Today, there is
hardly a ranked junior who isn't
dreaming of a pro career. Results
in the Easter Bowl often lead to
perks and otters that feed the
hunger for recognition. It is
intense.•
In the survey, 55 % of the
juniors responded by saying they
plan to be playing professional
tennis in 10 years, and 87% said
they expect a tennis scholarship. ·u la not unexpected that such
talented students would antici-
pate going to college despite the
fact that tennis is the main focus
of their lives,• Hamilton said.

Mesa qnd Uruversity are tied
for second place at 5-2 behind
front-runner Laguna Hills (7-0).
Estancia (0-16, 0-7 in PCL) will
travel to Laguna Hills today and
host the Hawks on Friday.
In the Sea View, the Sea Kings
(11-5, 5-2 in league) host league-
leadll\g El ·Toro ( 13-4-1, 5-1-1) on
Wednesday at 3: 15 and play the
Chargers at El Toro on Friday.
El Toro defeated Sea View
rival Irvine (9-7-1, 4-2-1) last
Wednesday for the championship
of the Dole Big West lnvitational.
Woodbridge, another Sea View
learn, advanced to the semifinals
of that tournament.
Newport Harbor (7-9, 1-6) will
attempt to make ari impact in the
Sea View this week when it trav-
els to Irvine on Wednesday and
hosts the Vaqueros on Friday.
For Corona del Mar, which fin-
ished in third place in last week's
Pride of the Coast Tournament,
this week is vital, not only
because of its opponent, but
because of Cd.M's recent history
following Spring Break.
Cd.M was in the hunt for a
league title last year after the
Pride of the Coast, but went 2-8
the rest of the wa and missed the
playoffs for the third year in a row.
"We've got a good chance this
week (of taking over fust place).·
CdM Coach Joe Koh said. "One
of the things we did this year -
and it was a lesson learned from

would have a good foothold on
first place, and if we were to be
tied at the end of the year, we
would get the edge."
Seniors Kevin Stuart (six home
runs) and Chad Johnson (five)
have hit most of Cd.M's 17 round-

sophomore Ryan Achterberg

•At this point in the season,
we're counting on our seniors,"
Koh said. "They're going to have
to step up and pitch key games
and get the key hits. The games
are theirs, and I get the best seat
