Four Seasons administrators have filed a
complaint against 1Win Pa1ms, alleging the
noise from late-night parties and live jazz at
the restaurant keeps hotel guests awake.
I'm hoping that from the
standpoint of the noise
complaints ... they'll get
serious review as far as

NEWPORT CENTER-The trendy 1'win
Palms restaurant -already under the gun
for annoying nearby hotel residents with
late-night parties and live jazz -.has spent
the first five months of its existence without
a permit for live entertainment
Also, the city might take Twin Palms'
noisy history into account before rubber-
starnping the restaurant's overdue
request for a live entertainment permit.
1Win Palms President Dennis Con-
stanzo said h.is restaurant has been in
compliance with the noise restrictioTIS of
the business' use permit since opening in
November of last year. Employees sub-
mitted a check for the live entertainment
permit to the city's revenue department
-SGT. JOHN DESMOND
Tuesday but have not returned the appli-
cation form.
But officials from the Newport Beach
Police Department said the matter may
not be so easily concluded. Numerous
complaints from the hotel may cause the
city to review the application carefully
before signing off, Newport Beach police
Sgt. John Desmond said.
"I'm hoping that from the standpoint
of the noise complaints and the music
coming from 1Win Palms, they'll get sen-
ous review as far as consideration lS con-
"We're trying to be good citizens,"
Constanzo said. -And we're bending
over backwards m that we're domg th.is
oursell for the time being and keeping
the pos1t1on that somebody else will pay That circumstance, which restaurant
administrators worked to correct Tues-. Once the oversight is corrected, Con-
stanzo expects the permit to be granted • SEE PERMIT PAGE 5

Party leaders opt
to take no action
againSt Toledano
•Already hit with no
confidence vote and
facing possible removal,
Democratic chair sur-
vives meeting.
By Evan Henerson , Daily Pilot
Orange County Democratic
Party Chairman Jim Toledano
-already slapped with a vote
of no confidence from fellow
party members -walked away
unscathed from a Monday night
meeting where he could have
been forced to resign his post.
The Central Committee of the
Orange County's Democratic
Party look no action Monday to
remove chai.rm.an Toledano for
an alleged campaign violation.
Earlier l.his month, the par-
ty's executive committee voted
5-4 to give Toledano a vote of
no confidence and to ask for his
resignation for the chairman's
handling of an 11th-hour cam-
paign contribution from the sis-
ter of a congressional candidate
during the March primary.
A two-thirds vote from those
present at a regular central
committee meeting could force
the chairman to step down. The
committee met Monday for the
first time since the executive
committee's "no confidence"
vote April 2.
Some suspected the central
committee might use that meet-
ing to vote the chairman out of
office. But Monday's meeting
included no further talk of a
resignation and no vote.
Party Secretary Marti
Schrank said the gathering was
"business as usual."
"You have your agenda and
your usual business,• Schrank
said of Monday's gathering. "I
can't say whether all of this is
over or not."
In fact, the only discussion of
the charges was brought up by
Toledano
himself.
"I stood
up and
explained
that I had
made a~
take and that
we had to
get this
behind us,"
said Tole-
Jlm Toledano dano, who
added that
he will take full responsibility for
failing to inform the executive
committee of the contribution.
"I've called this a tempest in
a teapot. It always has been that
and now it's being dealt with in
the way it should have been
dealt with in the beginning."
The party has hired an attor-
ney specializing in election law
to detennine what if any action
should be taken.
Toledano is accused of using
a $10,000 contribution from
Debra. LaPrade on a slate mail-
er despite the fact that La.Prade
-the sister of unsuccessful can-
didate Jim Prince -had already
maxed out on her contributions.

Anne Frank story remains a
painful reminder of inhumanity
E ver lince my stepson
played Otto Prank in a fine,
sensitive production of
"The Diary of Anne Prank• at
Newport Harbor High School ear-
ly this school year, Anne has been
esped.ally close to our family.
So, naturally, when she
dropped into the neighborhood
last week, we went calling. And
it tur)led out to be a night we
won't soon forget.
The occasion was the opening
of the "Anne Frank in the
World• exhibit at the Fullerton
Museum Center. More than
50,000 people -many of them
school children -saw the same
exhibit at the Newport Harbor
Art Museum last year.
But there was a very special
added attraction at its Fullerton
opening: the performance by
singer-actress Andrea Maroovicci of
a concert piece called "I Am Anne
Frank" (composer Michael Cohen. .
lyricist Enid Futterman) that com-
bines songs and music with select-
ed readings from Anne's diary.
The performance was deeply
moving and brought back with
painful vividness the trauma of a vis-
it my wife and I .made to Auschwitz
several years ago. There we saw
Anne Frank's sui~ -carefully
preserved with the luggage ot thou-
sands of other victims by the Nazis,
who also saved hair, teeth, eyeglass-
es and anything else that might pos-
sibly be useful to them.
The immediacy of being
immersed in one of these Nazi
extenninationcamps~soover
powering that expressions of big-
otry and hatred today bring it
immediately to the surface. Until I
actually saw the train platform,
where hundreds of thousands of
Jews were unloaded from boxcars
I I "' I I "-I I'
joseph n.
bell
and herded immediately into the
gas chamber, J couldn't compre-
hend the Nazi capacity for either
efficiency or inhumanity. No
amount of film or photographs
can duplicate that image.
It has become politically cor-
rect to modify every mention of
the Holocaust with a reference to
other efforts -the Turks pogrom
of the Armenians, for example -
to wipe out entire races of peo-
ple. I'm not sure why this is. .
Each one of these horrors can
stand on its own. The effect of
combining them is to leave the
wisp of an impression that this
particUla.r horror maybe isn't so
bad since it ~ just one of many.
There have also been sugges-
tions that we have romanticized
Anne Frank excessively -a kind
of revisionist look at a teenage
girl writing precociously in her
diary. The enormous service of
Anne Frank and her diary was to
hwnanize and individualize the
Holocaust. A horror of this scope
can sometimes be taken whole
and thus more easily digested.
Anne made this impossible by

projecting her individuality so
powerfully on us that we were
forced to look at the treatment of
this one girl and her family.
None of this bas been lost on
Newport Beach resident Bruce Giu-
liano who was the principal mover-
and-sbaker in bringing the Anne
Frank exhibit to his home town and
~ now the Project Direct.or tor the
Fullerton exhibit He also heads up
the Orange County Anne Frank
Organizing Committee, which is
staffed by local volunteers dedicat-
ed to, as Giuliano put it, "encourag-
ing positive hwnan relations, trying
to head off all kinds of violence,
and helping Kids to understand --
they can make a positive contribu-
tion to the world they live in.·
His route to this work was as
unconventional as the man. him-
self. After many Years as a high
school teacher and college profes-
sor in literature and social studies,
Giuliano joined his family business:
a chain of bakery-<ielicatessens
familiar lo many Orange Counbans.
W hen his 22-year-old son
died several years ago, Giu-
liano was both devastated and
dysfunctional. Casting about des-
perately for some way of deahng
with his loss, Giuliano fixed on
Otto Frank, who was the only
member of the famous Frank
'8mily to survive the Holocaust.
·I was curious at first,• Giuliano
told me, "then amazed at Otto's
ability to come back from the loss
of his family and be such a poslbve
force. So I set out to find some·
thing in Otto's experiences that
would be relevant to me. That led
me lo the Anne Frank organiza-
tion. At the same time, it seemed a
way of dealing with the increasing
amount of hate and violence I was
seeing in Orange County-and it
got me back into education.
"We tell kids wbo come to visit
tlus exhibit: ')'ou can protect your
own rights only by protecting the
rights of others. Onoo you begin to
restrict the rights of others, you will
eventually restrict your own. As
our exhibit shows so clearly, that's
how it all started in Germany. First,
the Nazis turned on the handi-
capped, then the Socialists, then
the Jews, then other ethnic minori·
ties The final result ~ a society
founded on hatred andexdusion
in which _ev.eryone suffers.•
_ 9aeshe see any indications of
the same things happening here? ·sure. The first sign is the
stereotyping of whole groups of
people, and we see plenty of that
today The~ are the same,
no matter which stereotype or
group is focused on. U we develop
the habit of stereotyping one group,
then it extends very easily to others.
Unless we wake up to these kinds
of voices -wherever they come
I
from -and recognize them for what
they are, they will work their way
into the fabric of our society.•
And how does Anne Frank
figure m ~ effort?
"Anne is a symbol -the quin-
tessential example of the inno-
cent victim. Kids, especially, can
relate to her.·
U you DllSSed the exhibit or
want to see it again, it will be at
the.Fullerton Museum until June
2 And, not ioodentally, Marcov-
1cci will be smguig at SCR in July.
lf she does Jerome Kem and
lrvulg Berlin half as well as the
Anne Frank piece, you won't
want to miss her.

Championships being held in near-
by Philadelphia, Trump Coup Tom·
my decided to form a team and
enter the Vanderbilt, premier event
of the tournament. AB ou.r readers
are aware, Tommy is a rather ordi·
nary player who performs like a
muster in one event only: when
trumps break badly.
A hand suited to his peculiar ta).
ent soon appeared. Tommy's first
two bids described a balanced hand
of 22 points or better -no one ever
accused Tommy of being able to
count beyond 10 and hia apade stop-
per left a good deal to be deaired.
North tra nsrerred to spades and
then raised to game.
