•Water district, city, county offi-
cials have been meeting to find
alternative to dumping 5 million
gallons of treated sewage water
in bay.
By Evan Henerson, Daily Pilot
and property owners, the state Regional
Water Quality Control Board has delayed
the hearing to determine the fate of the
.controversial Wetlands Water Supply
project until May 20.
Representatives from the city, the
Irvine Ranch Water District, the Orange
County Water District and the county's
Sanitation District met at Newport Beach
City Hall Thursday· and have agreed to
meet again next week.

paper ~ore the regional board meets
again to demonstrate to all parties that
this is a viable alternative. We're still 9pti-
mistic that this can succeed, but we've
got a long way to go. H
Details of the alternative were not
available, but those familiar with the pro-
ject say it probably .involves a link
between the Irvine Ranch Water District
and the Orange County Water District's
Green Acres project in Fountain Valley.
The water would come from the district's
Michelson Reclamation Plant and, district
officials claim, would provide a steady water
supply for the SWTounding duck ponds. The
proposal would also save the district an esti-
mated $20 million in disposal costs with the
Orange County Sanitation District.
· NEWPORT BEACH -A planned hear-
ing for a controversial treated s~wage
proposal was postponed Thursday, as
several agencies attempted to h.anuner
out an agreement to keep treated sewage
out of Newport Bay.
At.the request of city and state officials
Ideally, city officials claim, the regional
board hearing on a controversial treated
sewage proposal will never take place.
"There's a lot of engineering informa-
tion that we still need to gather to see if
our alternative proposal wil.\ pan out,"
said City Manager Kevin Murphy. "The
alte,rnative we've proposed would
involve all entities and would change the
way things are operating now.
City officials are hoping that a link
between the two water districts would
provide a use for the 5 million g~ons of
reclaimed water which Irvine Ranch
Water District is proposing to dump into
Newport Bay.
The proposal has outraged citizens and
merchants throughout Newport Beach,
who say the treated sewage poses a
potential threat to the bay and its users. In
addition, Assemblywoman Marilyn Brew-
er, R-70th District, has authored legislation
which, if passed, would block the propos-
aJ. The regional board will decide whether

NEWPORT CENTER
Trustees of the Newport Harbor
Art Museum have signed off on a
proposal which would allow the
newly-created Orange County
Museum of Art to maintain a
satellite gallery in Laguna Beach.
That means the only thing
potentially blocking the Newport
Harbor/Laguna Art Museum
merger is the approval of the
Laguna museum's 1,500 mem-
bers who must agree to the merg-
er. Results of the membership
election, conducted by mail over
the past two months, will be
announced Saturday.
Newport Harbor Museum offi-
cials, however, said Thursday
they were certain approval would
be granted.
After a special meeting Thursday
night, Newport Harbor trustees
reaffinned by a substantial majority
their commitment to combine the
two museums' board members and
resources and become the Orange
County Museum of Art. The
trustees bad approved the merger
Jn concept in late February:-
"We are very encouraged that
this merger is back on track, and
we can continue on course," said
Jim Selna, N~wport Harbor Art
Museum President.
Charles Martin, who is expect-
ed to become the Orange County
Museum of Art's new president,
called the merger a "milestone in
the development of a cultural
infrastructure in Orange County."
But opposition from the Lagu-
na .membership -particularly the
recently-established advocacy
group Save Laguna Art Museum .
-threatened to kibosh the deal.

The group will be performing

which they wrote themselves.
This will be Lopez' first taste
of stardom. But h~ first role is
more comedic than glamorous.
"I'm going to do a scene that
was taken from a book,• Lopez
said. "I'm going to be sitting
down on a toilet, and another girl
comes in and asks me, 'How are

of funny -and embarrassing."
Laksmis Castillo wrote the skit
that she'll be performing with
some friends. She describes it as
a futuristic piece. ·
"My friends and I always talk
about what we want to be when
we grow up,• said Castillo, 15.
"So, I thought instead of talking
about what we want to do, I'd
write a play that has us already
grown up and doing what we
wanted to do, like it was real.•

Under the plan proposed by
Murphy and fire Chief Tim Riley,
Ule dty would train additional
firefighters to be paramedics in
order to increase staffing at the

Fire officials, then, would be

Riley projects that the proposal, if

respond more quickly to emer-

During cross eumination of the
two witnesses, Noceda tried lo

Sbe attempted to undermine the
credibility of the police's field sobri-

by Harbor Municipal Court Judge

Walsh, was the first witness called
to testify, and told how he heard

mounted in the police car.
Testimony also included aplana-

machine called the lntoxllizer5000,
which measured Omelu' blood
alcohol level at the polk:e Jtatlon.
Walsh attributed Ornelas' sway·

By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
IRVINE -Four primary factors led to
sophomore Chuck Loo's rare quadruple
Thursday in Newport Harbor High's
boys track and field meet against Sea

bridge:
• He was healthy for the first time in
two weeks.
• Each week, he's usually the
Sailors' top scorer, this time being no
different. ·
• There was an adrenaline boost
from facing the No. 3-ranked team in
Orange County.
• Finally, through weekend invita-
tional meets, Loo has become friendly
with certain Woodbriage competitors.
·I really wanted to do well today,
because Woodbridge was the No. 3
team in the county the last time I
checked, and I thought it would be a
good meet to come out strong," said
Loo, whose squad (0-4) lost a 92-42
decision against host Woodbridge (2-2),
which had to forfeit two Sea View dual-
meet victories this year because of an
ineligible athlete.
Loo felt right at home. He started in
the high jump, then took. a timeout to
run the 110 high hurdles, which be
won (16.2), then returned to the high
jump and won that (6·2), tying a;>er-
son4l record, an event in which he only
reoently began to compete.
Next, it was the 300 intermediate
hurdles, which Loo won (42.7). He
capped his extraordinary quadruple
with a personal·best 41·2 in the triple
jump.
"I like running against Wood-
bridge,• Loo said. "There are just some
schools like that. Corona del Mar, of
course, I bate. But there are sQme
Woodbridge and El Toro guys I talk to,
guys that I've run against, and met, at
invitationals."
In the 300 hwdles, Loo came dose to
his personal record (42.5). It was his
first four·victory meet on the varsity
level.
"That's rarely seen, 20 varsity points
for one guy," said Nowell Kay, Newport
Harbor triple jump coach.
Loo reached his PR on his fourth and
final triple·jump attempt. He's still a
long way from the school record of 48-
6 112, held by Sheldon BlockbW"ger in
1983.
"He maintained better speed (on the
runway) and his approach was better
on his last jump,• Kay said. •He also
finished it with a good.landing, and he
can do even better because of bis mid-
dle phase."
Other Newport Harbor winners
Included Jason Aston in the 800 meters
(2:06.8), Sherif Pepic in the shot put
(49-8) and Shane Reese in the discus
(148·0).
Reese was also third in the shot put
(46-4). Terrence Felix, third in the 400
meters (54.63) for the Sailors, was the
only sprinter for Newport Harbor to fin·
isb in the top three.

Mel Hutchins. one of George Yardl~ tummates wtth
the ft. Wayne Pistons drc.a 1956 and 57. Is
one of the many pro and college ~rs past * end present who will be in town for the
Bmketball Hall of Fame banquet honoring
Yardtey May 1 at the Balboa Bay Club.
This Is what George said about Mel a few
years ago In a book titled "From Set Shot to
Slam Dunk -The Glory Days of Basketball In The Words
of Those Who Played It":
•Met Hutchins was by far the best defensive basketball
player who ever lived, better than Biii Russell and all of
them.
Ruuetl could not play man-to-man defense. I scored 52
points on Russell twice. I just loved to see him coming.
But when he was waiting for me undef the basket well,
I was lucky to get 10 points.
.. As an lndMdual defensive player, Mel was superior. In
our playoff series against Philadelphia one year, Mel
blocked at least sewn of Paul Arizin's shots. Hutchins
tot.ally destr0)1ed him. If you could scOf'e on Mel, you
could scor. on anybody.•
