I 'm back. Where were we? I
don't remember. Doesn't mat-
ter.
Anyway, I've been busier.than
usual on the rubbef·chicken cir-
cuit.. It's the mayor thing -w.el-
commg people at conventions
and making speeches at lunches
and dinners and more lunches.
Actually, it's kind of fun. You
sit at a head table. They feed
you. You stand up and tell a few
dumb jokes -exceptionally
dumb in my case. I smile, they
stare. I sit down, they applaud.
What's not to like?
There's one part I don't like,
~oug_h.. Even after years of doing
it, eating on a raised platform in
front of a sea of people who are
eating and watching you eat
while you watch them eat -is a
very odd business. There are
some things you might want to
do m front of a large crowd. Eat-
ing is not one of them.
ls there a social minefield
more dangerous than eating? 1
th.ink not. Now imagine doing it-
in front of hundreds of people, at
least 70 of whom are staring at
~ peter
buff a
you. We've all been through the
agonizing first date or the
dreaded dinner meeting with
Mr. Heavy Hitter. You take
extra time to get ready. You put
on the good stuff. You get
fluffed and folded as best you
can. You do a face check in the
bathroom mirror every 90 sec-
onds. Why aren't my teeth
whiter? What the heck is that
thing on my lip? God that looks
awful.
But nothing compares with
the meal itself on the stress
meter. As you study the menu,
you remind yourself to choose
carefully. Forget the Texas ribs
and Alaskan crab legs. Whether
it's romance or business, lifting
your head from your plate look-
ing like Hannibal Lector is a bad
thing. And we're not talking
about etiquette here. If you're
still confused about which bread
plate is yours, buy a book for
heaven's sake. lt's the unforeseen
that makes the blood run cold.
How many things can go wrong?
Let me count the ways.
1. The Ice Shift. You're at the
head table. You've just dazzled
your dinner partner with some
brilliant-observation. As he offers
his silly little response, you
gracefully lift your water glass to
your lips. The glass is almost
empty. You lift it higher, causing
the mass of ice at the bottom to
rush forward like a storm surge
on the Nile. A cascade of ice and
water bounces off your chin and
rolls down your shirt. Very •
impressive. It's even more effec-
tive with iced tea or a Diet Coke.
If you're really lucky, irll happen
just as the emcee asks you to
come to the microphone.
2. The Condensation Effect (a
variation on No. 1). Condensed
droplets run down the stem of

COSTA MESA -After failing
to get the city on their side, a
group of local actl.yists are striking .
out on their own with-plam to
build a new state-of-the-art pub-
lic library in Costa Mesa.
The Costa Mesa Ubrary Foun-
dation, a nonprofit group that
includes former county library
administrator Ken White, hopes to
raise about $17 million to build
and operate a new library on their
dation to work toward their
dream on their own.
The foundation's vision of a
multimillion-dollar public library
that would dwarf Costa Mesa's
existing branch libraries is not
without its critics.

Coundlman Joe Erickson said. "It
would be great to have a central·

those in other cities, White said.
#We want to compete with
Newport Beach, Huntington
Beach and Santa Ana and have
some major collections,• he said.
The foundation is essentially
an offshoot of the city's Llbrary
Services CommittE1e, which was
formed in 1996 to address con-
cerns about a $10 million cut in
county funding for its library sys-
tem over the previous three years.
Under the direction of the City
Council, the committee
researched several alternatives to
relying on the two county branch
libraries in Costa Mesa and came
up with an answer: Build a new
city central library.
At just about 8,000 square feet
each, the two county branch
libraries -one in Llons Park and
another in Mesa Verde -are too
small to adequately serve the
reading and library research
needs of Costa Mesa, White said.
The new library envisioned by
the foundation would be about
70,000 square feet, with 175,000
books, state-of-the-art computer
and research capabilities and oth-
er amenities.
The new library also could
play host to cultural programs,
community meetings and travel-

A new central library likely
would mean one or both of the
county branch~s would close or
be converted for use as school
librarieSi with the bulk of research
and cultural activities taking
place at the new central library,
White said.
But the ambitious project, with
its high price tag plus $2.5 million
a year in operating expenses, was
shunned last year by the council.
Frustrated by the lack of sup-
port and fund-raising assistance1 the advisory panel disbanded and
some of the committee leaders
now have formed a private foun-
Over the years, there has been
talk about acquiring the Jiarbor
Center -strip-mall on Harbor
Boulevard for development as a
central library, but White said the
foundation has not chosen a spe-
cific site to build a new library.
Erickson contends that rather
than building a costly new central
library, the 11-year-old Lions Park
branch library could be expanded
as part of C1,11Tent plans to reno-
vate the city park. .
•In no way is that library

Subway sandwich shops in as

On Tuesday, a man entered the
fast-food stand in the 3000 block

He then produced a gun and

On Monday, the Subway sand-

Police said the robber took
money from a cash register and
demanded that the employee go

Costa Mesa's
Starns makes
sacrifice, and
it pays off big
• One start on the mound
takes a year of eligibility
from him, but his start put
the team into the Division
_ID World Series last year.
J eremy Starns, a two-time
all-district performer out of
Costa Mesa High, is
finishing up his first full season
at Chapman University, an
NCAA Division lli program, but
he'll go into next year as a
junior.
Starns, who starred from the
mound for the Mustangs during
his successful prep career, went
to Chapman under the
assumption he would redshirt his
first season of eligibility.
He went through the whole
spring practicing with the squad,
pitching in scrimmages, but
under the notion that he w.ould
not pitch in any games.
All that changed in May
when the Tigers found
themselves in the Regional
tournament series wtth Califor-
nia Lutheran.
The five-game series, held
over the course of three days,
exhausted the pitching staff, but
a win in the final game would
mean a trip to the Division m
World Series.
Coach Rex Peters asked
Starns for a heck of d. sacrifice -
an entire year of eligibility for
one outing.
Starns obliged.
He w~nt 62/3 innings allowing
six hits and three earned runs as
the Tigers cruised to a 20-7 win.
Starns was a clutch reliever
for Coach Doug Deats at Mesa
and guided the Mustangs to
their first CIP playoff berth since
1991 when Starns sealed up a
three-hit shutout in the final
game of the sea.son.
After his startlng role in the
Regional playoffs earned him a
mark of 1-0 hil fre8bman WIOD,

Newport Beach's par-4 No.

had been a troublesome spot for
Albright in the first three rounds
with a bogey and two doubles.
But Albright said she caught

one of her two birdies. thanks to
a 20-foot putt.

In the final round, she saved

It was also the first time in

Of course if you can afford a

West found a clever maneuver to
lure South into destruction on this
deal. II would never have succeeded
at rubber bridge, but a duplic&tc pairs
event is a diftaaa& keuk Qf fJSh.!
South's bidding described a bal-
anced hand of 23-24 points. Nonh's
hand was borderline for a raise lo
game. since there rated to be little
play if declarer did not bold thtee
diamonds. In that event, however.
even two no trump might be too
high.
West led a low heart and declarct was delighted with dummy. Then
wuc five fast tricts available outside
the diamond suit, and five more
could be develooed there if the suit
broke no wane than 3-1. AJI declarer
had to do was cash the ace of dia·
monds and, if the queen did not drop.
lead the jact-of diamonds and run it.
After winning the first trick with
the queen of hearts, declarer duly played off &he ace of diamonds, not-
tq WC!'A's Dino. Wbea -4be. jadt was
led next. West produced &he ten. so
the only milsirla card in the su.it was
lhc 9uecn. Declarer reasoned I.hat,
hokting Q I 0 9, Wesa would ftlldy
have covered to asaft • Irick in dtc
suit and possibly ki.U dummy. Sinc:c
it seemed that the suit was~ in.
declarer rose with dummy's bog.
That was 1 wondelful development
for the defense. In the_..end. lhc con-
tract went down two tricks.
At rubber bridge thcte woukl be no
e~ for ~·-'-p1-y...At 4uf1i .. ,
