COSTA MESA -What started as an attractive
fund-raiser offering consumers coupons for coffee
and cereal that amount to cash for the Newport-
Mesa school district ceased when a state lawswt
was filed against a Costa Mesa company that sold
the coupon books.
Consumers -who recently bought the coupon
books -supplied by Costa Mesa-based United Gro-
cer:s Clearinghouse -from the Newport-Mesa
Schools Foundation in their fund-raising drive, are
advised not to count on receiving any orders of cof-
fee or cereal purchased with the coupons.
In their telephone hotline Monday. United Gro-

fill any future coupon orders for coffee or cereal ....
Those who have, should bold on until matters are

begin their duties at 9 a.m. and
end at noon, just in time for lunch.

COSTA MESA -When West
Side residents Paty Madueno
and Maria Alvarez saw their
neighborhood being tom apart
by g angs, drugs and v10lence,
they didn't look the other way or
hide be hind a locked door.
Instead, they tackle d the '
problems head-on.
And on Sunday, the -Orange
County Hwnan Relabons Com-
mission honored the two wome n,
along with Someone Cares Soup
Kitchen founder Merle Hatle-
berg and 18 other Orange Coun-
ty residents, for their outstanding
contributions to the community.
"I was excited -thnlled and
excited," said Madueno,. who,
as a member of the St. Joachim's
Organizing Committee and
Orange County Community
Congregation Organization has
helped bring about positive
change in what has traditionally
been considered Costa Mesa's
most dangerous neighborhood,
the Shalimar area.
Madueno and Alvarez, a
Shalimar Drive homemaker,
captured the community's atten-
tion last year, when they began
speaking out about the prob-
lems that have long plagued the
tiny Shalimar ~ghbodlood -
the gang-related s,hootings, the
drug deals, the slum-like condi-
tions in which many families
were forced to live.
They helped organize neigh-
borhood meetings, which were
attended by city officials and
hundreds of West Side families
and lobbied for increased police
patrols and a bilingual officer.
They helped open up a Shal-
imar Learning Center and a
Teen Center, where neig)?.bor-
hood kids could to do homework
and get tutoring.
"It's wonderful that they rec-
ognize the work that we've
been doing right here,•

COSTA MESA -In two unre-
lated incidents Saturday and
Monday, two motorists allegedly
driving under the influence of
alcohol were arrested after they
led police on high-speed chases
through the city.
At 2:56 a.m. Monday Eric Brad-
ing Turnipseed, a 25-yearlold
Costa Mesa resident, reportedly
didn't obey a stop sign at 1718
Newport Blvd. and was pulled
over by a Costa Mesa poll~ offi-
cer who saw the traffic violation.
The officer, who suspected
Turnipseed was under the influence
of a¥:;ohol, asked for his driver's
license. But after Turnipseed hand-
ed it to him. he ~ away and left
the officer standing there, Costa
Mesa police Capt Tom La7M said
The officer, who was joined by a
canine po.lice officer from Newport
Beach, pwsued Turnipseed who
sped through the city streets with
his car lights turned off, apparently
trying to hide from police.
•At 2:56 a.m. he's trying to be
incognito,• Lazar said.
But he was unsuccessful.
While Turnipseed drove at
speeds up to 100 mph, the officers
saw him run a few red lights and
TIDES From Swfllne a>sTA~
drive on the wrong side of the
road, police said.
The rapid pursuit. whidt covered
a few miles but injured no one, end-
ed when Turnipseed crashed into a
fire hydrant at East Mesa Verde Dri-
ve and Harla Avenue, police said But
Turnipseed apparently wasn't willing
to c.all it quits and leapt frcm bis car
and started running, La7.ar said.
The officers soon caught
Turnipseed, whose driver's license
was expired, and arrested him on
suspicion of driving under the influ-
ence of alcohol and evading police.
A JO-second pursuit began at
1:17 a.m. Saturday and ended
when Fabian Vega-Vega, an
Orange resident, was arrested on
suspicion of a felony hit and run,
driving under the influence of
alcohol and evading police.
Vega· Vega allegedly drove
away from a two-car accident at
southbound Harbor Boulevard
and Merrimac Way. While Vega-
Vega sped away, a Costa Mesa
police officer spotted him speed-
ing near Wilson Street, Lazar said.
The officer tried to stop Vega-
Vega who ignored him and kept
driving at about 60 mph through
four red traffic signals, police said.
The pursuit lasted for about 30 sec-
onds and ended at Newport Boule ..
vard and 18th Street, police said.

T he best Job 1 ever bad wu
that of a. postman. 1 carried
mall one summer for the
Balboa Post Office. The reason I
say it was the best job I ever had
was because It was the only job I
ever had in which my customers
were always glad to see me.
There was one small draw-
back. I delivered my mail by bicy-
cle. The town had no leash law.
Dogs ran free and they all hated
anyone on a bik.e, particularly
postmen. Our only defense was
what I called a torpedo, a small
bomb about the size of a walnut.
When a dog attaclted I would
throw that toipedo down on the
cement underneath the dog. It
would explode with a loud satisfy-
ing explosion and more important
would shoot little pieces of gravel
up into the underparts of the dog.
That discouraged most sensi-
ble dogs. However, there was
one dog that wasn't sensible.
This was a big, black ugly dog
owned by Mrs. Burlingame, wife of
RG. Burlingame, owner of the Ren-
dezvous, the bathhouse and the Ritz
Theatre. 1be Burlinga:mes were
important people in Balboa and
robe rt
gardner
their damned dog really ga\te me a
hard time. So, one day I got off my
bike and, aJJDed with a pocketful of
torpedoes, chased him into the
Burlingame's back yard where J
was peppering him with torpedoes
when I looked up and. to my horror,
there was Mrs. Burlingame watch-
ing me from the back door.
I mumbled some kind of a
lame excuse as I escaped and
assumed she would report me to
the postmaster. She didn't and I
didn't lose my job. I guess she
thought the dog had it coming.
' But, to get back. to the pleas-
ant ]>art of the job. The best thing
about the job of a postman in Bal-
boa during the summer vacation
was that you got the first crack on
new girls coming down with their
families for summer vacations.
That way you got a jump on
the rest of the local young men.
Some very pleasant summer
romances devel!d. One had a
peculiar result.
The girl was om San
Bernardino and was very good
looking. She and her family were
down for a month. I moved in,
romance blossomed and every-
thing went along just fine until
one weekend when she said her
regular boyfriend from San
Bernardino was coming down.
I bowed out until he left Then a
funny thing happened. A man
walked up to Sam Oxarart, who
was taking tickets at the Ren-
dezvous, knocked him down, said,
"Stay away from my girl" and left.
The background goes some-
thing like this.
I was taking the girl to the
Rendezvous every night. In those
days we former ticket takers from _
tbe Rendezvous had a deal with '!
present ticket takers by which we •
got in free. I guess J told the girl '
about that. I guess she wrote a
letter to a glrl.friend in San
Bernardino and told ber about
me and the free tick.et deal
I guess the story got a little
garbled and I guess the girl must
have had a big mouth and I
guess she told the steady
boyfriend about it. I guess tbe
girl had described me as thin.
with blue eyes and blond hair.
Sam Oxarart was thin and had
blue eyes and blond hair.
The irate boyf nend went to the
Rendezvous, saw a ticket taker
who was thin and had blue eyes
and blond hair and decked him.
Sam wasn't hurt, just puzzled.
The boyfnend went back to
San Bernardino, Sam nursed a
sore jaw and I resumed my inter-
rupted summer romance.
As I say, being a postman was
the best job l ever had.

umn appears Tuesdays.
No council vote or action
was required Monday, but both
Mayor Hedges and Norma
Glover said the bill, if
approved, might go a long way
to solving one of the city's long-
standing problems.
Nearly half the people who
use the library do not live in
Newport Beach. Thus, New-
port Beach residents pay a
much greater percentage of
the costs than non-residents.
the Johnson
bill also impose an annual fee
cap of $25 per library card for
non-residents. However, both
Hedges and Glover said they
would prefer that no. amount
be specified in the legislation
since it would then take a state
act to amend the figure.
The bill reaches its first com-
mittee, the Senate Education
Committee, Wednesday in
Sacramento. City Councilman
Tom Edwards and City Ubrari-
an LaDonna Kienitz will testify
at the hearing.

ance not only to the kids, but to ·
the parents of the community
who had no direction or

were in trouble with their kids.
•Roy offered bis guidance,
based on bis own life experi-
ences. He became everything
from a father figure to a big
brother. He was the heart and
sole of the Latino community.
He truly will be missed.·
Despite several brushes with
the law. Mr. Alvarado had
become known as a role model
-a man to be looked up to and
admired. He had (numphed
over all types of adversity -
drug addiction, gangs, illness.
He even served time in San
Quentin state prison. And he
used those experiences to send
a message of hope to troubled
youths.
"He related difficult times in
his own life to the kids he
worked with, and he provided a
sense of family that some of
these luds never had,· said
Co~ta Mesa Mayor Joe Erick-

he turned the lives of a large

"I think that becawe of Roy,
a lot of kids will go on to live
healthy, productive lives."
Newport-Mesa Unified
School District Superintendent
Mac Bernd witnessed Mr.
Alvarado's flair witll students.
Mr. Alvarado spent countless
hours on school campuses, talk-
ing with the students, counsel-
ing them, listening to them, just
being there.
·Roy bad a way with .kids,•
Bernd said. "I think bis back-
ground was very important.
He'd been on the street, and
he's somebody1 wbo had made
it. He'd gotten out ol a rough
life, and he had a way of com-
municating with the kids that
allowed them to really see that
it was possible to change."
Mr. Alvarado was so dedicat-
ed to bis programs that he
poured much of his own money
into them, leaving little to cover
funeral expenses. And since he
was considered a part-time,
contract employee of the school
district, Mr. Alvarado was not
eligible for benefits such as
health and life insurance.
Mr. Alvarado is survived by
sons Nicholas, Frank and Larry;
daughter Dominique; seven sis-
ters; and four brothers.
Funeral arrangements are

While some might still be

In exactly one week and a day,
Hatleberg could find herself
locked out of the First United

day for the past three years.

The church has given Hatle-

the deadline another month

little luck finding a new home.
Hatleberg has since made an
offer on a vacant restaurant site
that's for sale down the roap on
19th Street. Her first offer was
rejected by the owner, and now
she's waiting to hear word on a
second bid she's submitted.

about a week," she said. "I'm

maybe the church will let me stay

Glenn told me I might have a
future in volleyball. At the time, I
was looking to play football,
which I did at Golden West
College. But, when it came time
to move on (from Golden West),
Long Beach was the only school
ottering me a scholarship and it
was for volleyball."
The unlikely chain of events
didn't stop there, as Walker,
whom Glenn recruited as a

"I came to Long Beach

as it turned out, it was a pretty
