The issue of the appropriateness of sun-

fugitive was hit by a car Tuesday
as be tried to escape from two St.

, escorting him from John Wayne
Airport back to Missouri, where
he is wanted on burglary and
probation violation charges.
Robert Wayne Shook had
been standing at the TWA ticket
counter wiijl the two police
detectives when he broke away
from . them shortly after 11: 15
a.m .. according to Orange Coun-,
ty Sheriff's Lt. Ron Wilkerson.
"He ran outside the terminal,
went up to the second level, then
shinned down a support pillar to
the ground level," Wilkerson
said. "He ran across MacArthur
Boulevard, where he was struck
by a car, and he continued run-
ning."
A sheriff's helicopter and
patrol cars searched the area, but
authorities were unable to find
him.
"Then the Irvine Police
Department received a 91 1
phone call from a deli at 2301
DuPont, stating that a male sub-
ject had just walked into the deli,
and he appeared to be injured,•
Wilkerson said. "Irvine 'police
went to the deli, and that's where
they arrested him."
The impact of the car that
struck him while crossing
MacArthur had caused injuries to
Shook's ribs. Once he w~s ln
police custody again, he was ta.k-

treatment.
"Ultimately, he'll be extradited
to St. Louis," Wilkerson said.

Wendy Leece and the art of beating up kids Police find
suspect but
not loot I 'almost pate to do this. It's like
shooting fish in a barrel. But it
needs to be done. Man, does
it need lo be done.
Our homegrown educational
gadfly, Wendy Leece, is on the
loose again. This time she has
been out sharing her views in a
public meeting of the Orange
Unifietl School District, whose
trustees vot~d 4-3 recently to
move its scliools back to the Mid-
dle Ages in increments instead of
all in one leap. ,
There was enough public out-
rage over a proposal to prohibit
grants for all social services in
the Orange public schools
(including free breakfasts for
hungry children) that the board
backed off to a less Draconian
program. But not exactly grace-
fully .. The school board president
said darkly afterward: "I'll never
give up. When the individual
grants come before us, that will
be another hurdle, that will be
another test as to how conserva-
tive this board is."
Translated freely, that means if
we can't beat 'em on the battle-
field, we'll beat 'em from behind
every rock and fence post along
the way. And our girl Wendy
was on hand to applaud that kind
of tough talk. In her statement at
the public meeting she said, in
part: "I'm sure that all of you pos-
sess a great deal of compassion
for those children who come from

needy families that have medical
needs and perhaps have prob-
lems that inhibit their learning,
and I would anticipate you will
be losing some sleep over this."
And then the but ...
•rm concerned about intrud-
ing into the family domain to
solve problems that, yes, they are
great in our society, but parents
are capable of solving the prob-
lems or finding other agencies
where these problems could be
solved."
In other words, go ahead and
lose a little sleep over sick and
hungry kids to prove your com-
passion, but don't let that inter-
fere with hard-line political dog-
ma that says this isn't our prob-
lem, even when the parents can't
find work to put food 'On the

Wendy would have gotten
along fipe with Marie Antoinette,
who said, •1.et them eat cake"
when told about hungry French
revolutionaries. Marie
Antoinette wasn't mocking her
hungry subjects. She was simply
puzzled. The possibility of a
world in which there wasn't
plenty of cake for everyone was
beyond her vision, lijlfelated .to
anything she had ever known.
Her peasants -like Wei;idy's par-
ents -were surely •capable of
solving the problem.•
Marie finally lost her head, lit-
erally, over that gap in her edu-
cation. Before that happens polit-
ically to Wendy, she should do
some visiting in her own school
district. A good place to start
might be-Costa Mesa's Whittier

If Wendy had visited Whittier's
principal, Juan de Jesus, on the
day I talked with him, she might
have caught him on the phone
trying to talk a local shoe store
out of a discount for one of his
teachers who was buying shoes
for several of her students out of
her own money. I'm sure Juan
de Jesus would tell her, as he
iold me: "I don't know what they
mean when they say these pro-
grams take away from acade-
mics. We don't stop school to
feed these children or look to
their health. They get the same
nwnber of instructional minutes
as the students in any other
school. But they aren't hungry
while they're learning.•
It irritates the hell out of me to
see these people who would torpe-
do grants that serve children wrap-
ping themselves and their actions
in such a distinguished cloak as
"conservative." Webster defines
conservative asMdisposed to main-
tain existing institutions or views;
within safe bounds; moderate.·
Denying grants desperately need-
ed by children in their care isn't
conservatism. It's radical rightwing
political dogma, superimposed on
a lot of hungry and ailing kids.
It is also a virus that is infect-
ing our school boards. and it is
--
going to spread if we don't do
something about it. l..ike electing
people more concerned about
the weUare of the children in
their district than in ma.king
political points.
A nd don't ever say we haven't
been warned. Listen to the
people who didn't get their way
in Orange. There is certainly
nothing hidden about their agen-
da. One Orange trustee who vot-
ed against the ban said: MWe
took the teeth out of the tiger,
but now they can still win this
thing piecemeal.•
Indeed they can. These are
people with political religion
and missionary zeal, out to con-
vert the natives on the backs of
small children. The best way to
d~al with them is to keep them
off school boards. But once they
get there, the citizens who find
this approach anathema are
going to have to be constantly
alert that it doesn't infect the
school system piecemeal rather
than by epidemic.
The letters from Pilot readers
in the aftermath of Leece's
appearance in Orange were
indeed encouraging. It's impor-
tant, now, to sustain that outrage
-and then maybe speak out at
the next election.

THE 1156 OLYMPIC GAMES
Disappointments come to all, and for George Yardley the
biggest one of all came In 1956 when the chance to become an
O~pian evaporated.
After getting a postgrad degree at Stanford in 1951, I played
the next three seasons In the AAU championships with Stewart
Chevrolet and we won the natlonal champioruhfp and I was
twl'e named MVP," said Yardley. "I was told I was a
cinch to make the Olympic team. In those years, they *
picked she AAU players and six collegians.
"I was tickled about It. particularly because it was such
a big drea'm of my father and mother. But the season
before the Olympfcs. 1 was plaring with the Los
Alamitos Navy and In our flna game, we were ahead by 40
points. All the starters headed for the showers, but for some
• reason I was still on bench and somebody fouled out and I went
back In the game.
Hin an instant. I was knocked down and a guy stepped on my
hand and broke it in three places. So I didn't get to even try out
for the Olyl'nplc team. You just never know, do you? ..
