Newport
Beach police
officer Rick
Bradley says
judo is his
answer to
being a
good cop
By carolyn Miller, Dai/'y Pilot
I t's been almost 20 years since
Rick Bradley looked down the
formidable -line of police
recruits and realized he had bet-
ter leam something to compen-
sate for his short stature.
Judo was the police officer's
answer to canying himself in a
manner that warned: "Don't
mess with me or you'll be sony. •
·1 took up judo to be a better
cop. Judo was the stuff they
teach us for defense tactics,• said
Bradley, who stands 5 feet 8 inch-
es tall and is a veteran Newport
Beach police patrol officer. "I
said, '1bat's what I needed to
learn."'
He grew to love the sport
which he excels at and calls it · ,
-healthy addiction."
"It's kept me out of a fight," he
said. •A ·couple times I've been
attacked on the street and I go
into a move without thinking
about it and I'm on top of the guy
and he's down.
•vou get down to a point of
reactionary and instinctive. U you
think about it for a second, you
get l)urt real bad.•
Not only did Bradley, 41, mas-
ter the martial art and earn a
black belt, but earlier this month
at the Judo U.S. National Cham-
pionships held at San Jose State
he and his partner and fellow
officer Greg Fernandez, crowned
a 10-year streak of holding the
national title.
"One decade," Bradley said,
proudly savoring the words. "I
challenge anybody to beat that
record. I wanted to set a record
no one would break and this
might be it.
•But I would love to see one Of
my students break it," Bradley,
said.
And be might. Bradley, a
father of three, has volunteered
as a judo teacher for 16 years and
is now teaching at the Newport
Beach police station twice a
week. He welcomes anyone in
school days
the community who is willing to
learn and can pay the $1 a class
to the city's Community Services
Department.
1\vo of his students, Newport
Beach residents Tom Dennis and
Greg Kay, competed. at the
National Championships for the
first time and placed third and
fourth place in two different cat-
egories in the 30-plus age group.
"I was amazed at how well
they did,• Bradley said. "That
really was something. It's won-
derful for me as a teacher."
Bradley said judo is a def en-
sive sport that is a great mental
and physical builder, but he
hopes bis students never have to
use the technique outside of class
or competition.
"The suspect never attacks
the bully, they attack the lamb,"
he said. •1t you carry yourself in a
way, like, 'I know something,'
they will never attack.
"U we train and they never
have to use it, we'll be a suc-
cess."
The damaged buildings includ-
ed city property and apartment
buildings in the 1900 through
2100 blocks of Wallace Street,
businesses in the 600 to 800 blocks
of West 19th Street, and in the
1700 block of Newport Boulevard,
according to police.
Correction
Thursday's article, "MacArthur
expected to look smooth once
improvements made," contained
incorrect information regarding
the connection between
MacArthur Boulevard and the
Corona del Mar Freeway and the
San Joaquin Hills toll road.
Once the first two segments of
the MacArthur road widening and
the tollway are completed, it is
anticipated that Caltrans will
remove MacArthur Boulevard's
Corona del Mar Freeway designa-
tion and the road will revert back
to the city. In addition, the section
of MacArthur Boulevard between
San Joaquin Hills and Ford Road
will have three lanes in ·each
direction not two.

SOS expansion runs into bureaucratic wall
• City's general pta.ri places restrictions on charity's
ability to build job training and education center.
By Tina Borgatta, Daily Pilot
COSTA MESA -A plan
that would add a job training
and education center to the
list of poverty relief services
offered by SOS may take a lit-
tle longer to come to fruition
thal) charity officials bad
originally hoped.
Share Our Selves poverty
relief center director Karen
McGlinn . last summer
announced the plans, which
would have converted the for-
mer site or Garf's Restaurant,
right next door to SOS, into the
new training facility, which
would offer classes in nutrition
and health as well as courses
in cooking and other job.
preparation subjects.
At the time, she said she
hoped to have a proposal
ready to submit to the city by
the fall. But the p lan hit a
stumbling block when SOS
officials learned what they
wanted to do didn't fit with the
city's general plan.
•rugbt now we're at kind of
a problematic .stance,•
McGlinn said Thursday. "We
went to the dty to see what we
could do and we found out that
because of the general plan,
we would not be a ble to raze
what's there now and build a
new building. We'd have to
leave it as it is."
McGlinn said she hasn't
given up hope for the new
facility, though. The charity
has hired an architect to study
the feasibility of reconfiguring
SOS' current operation at 1550
Superior Ave.
That site houses a ware-
house and packaging area, a
waiting room, an activities cor-
ner for children and office
space.
·we still hope to accom-
plish everything," McGlinn
said. uBut now we're thinking
we may have to reconfigure
our current building for the
education and training and
maybe move our offices over
to Garf's. But we're proceeding
very cautiously.

Meanwhile, the charity has
continued on with its fund-

SOS' Taste of the Nation,
raised $80,000 for the project.

McGlinn said. #N ow we're
shooting for maybe April of

force Newport Beach to with·
draw from the Santi.ago Ubrary

in reimbursement from the state.
Ubra.ry trustees are w orried that
the lost revenue will outweigh
what the city would earn in non-

With support from the Ubrary

arrive at a solution which might

City Librarian LaDonna

President John Kallenberg has

The suspect served time in
state prison for theft and has four
warrants for his arrest, police said.
One of Gomez' warrants reported-
ly includes a $50,000 bail warrant
in Costa Mesa for using a counter-

He is also wanted by Sheriff's

police for violating his parole,

Prayers aboard vessels will
include asking for more than
safety, but for strong winds, as the
49th annual Newport-to-Ensena-
da International Yacht Race
begins today off the Newport Jet-
ty at noon with more than 500
boats expected to compete in a
myriad of classes.
Lookout Point in Corona del
Mar and The Wedge at Peninsula
Point are considered two of the
best locations to view the start of
the race, an occasion so scenic it
attracts a legion· of photogra-
phers.
The Newport Ocean Sailing
Associapon-sponsored regatta
features six fleets, the Perfor-
mance Handicap Racing Fleet
usually the largest with about
75% of the boats.
. NOSA, founded Aug. 15, 1947,
started the Newport-to-Ensenada
race that year to revive ocean rac-
ing after World War Il. About 35
boats were expected for the inau-
gural race, but it became an over-
whelming success with 1 t 7
entries.
It takes about 90 minutes to
get all of the entries started in the
125-rnile race. Its fleets include
the Inte rnational Offshore Rac-
ing, Ancient Mariner (older
wooden boats), Ocean Racing
Catamaran, 70 raters (or sleds),
and the International Measure-
ment System.
Team Dennis Conner's Stars &
Stripes set a record of 9 hours, 13
minutes in 1991. The corrected-
time record for a single hull is
12:23, set by Saga, a 68-foot sloop
skippered by Dennis Choate in
1983.
Slower boats begin first, allow-
ing them an opportunity to get
fwther down the coast before the
sun sets and the winds lighten. It
is widely embraced that the race
is won at night. Most boats that
reach a 10th to a quarter of a knot
are considering doing well. Cata-
marans are the quickest boats.

NO. 1 IN GEORGE YARDLEY'S HEART
Harbor High? Stanford? The Ft. Wayne Pistons?
That's No. 1, as in who was the best team
George Yardley ever played for on his way to m
the Springfield, Mass., to be enshrined in the
Basketbafl Hall of Fame?
After Yard scored his barrier-breaking
2,001 points '1or the Detroit Pistons in t958,
his hand was broken the next season and he
was traded ~ owner Fred Zollner to the Syracuse Nats.
•At first. I didn't want to go to Syracuse and thought
about retiring," Yardley said. •out Paul Seymour talked
me into it, so I did go and about three weeks later we
played the Pistons and it was on national lV.
Zollner was sitting up in the first row. I had a big cast
all the way up my arm, but I got about 30 points in 22
minutes and we beat their brains out. When I came oot
of the game I used my arm with the cast on it to give it
to Zollner, just to tell him what I thought o~ him.
"We had a very good team at Syracuse. There was
Johnny Kerr, Dolph Schayes. Bob Hopkjns, Hal Greer.
Larry Costello and Al Bianchi. In fact, it was the best
team I ever played for. We should have beaten Boston
in the J?layoffs. We lost it in the seventh game, and then
the Celtics beat Minneapolis 4-0 In the finals."
