Three of the four contenders for
the Orange County Board of
Supervisors' 2nd District seat
showed up Thursday night for a
candidates' forum and the
absence of the incumbent didn't
go unnoticed.
First-term Supervisor Jim Silva
was a no-show for the forum,
which was sponsored by the
Orange Coast chapter of League
of Women Voters, but Huntington
Beach City Councilman Dave
Sullivan, former Costa Mesa
Mayor Sandy Genis and Hunting-
ton Beach activist Ralph Silva all
attended.

Sullivan said.
League officials said they
extended an invitation to the
forum to all the candidates, but

Thousands of visitors, from
families out for a Sunday stroll

expected to take part in the
event. All along the South
Bayfront promenade, from the
Ferry Landing at Opal Street
to Marine Avenue, artists will
display their works and
demonstrate the use of oils,
watercolors, pastels, acrylics
and ceramics to passers-by.
Artwalk organizer Debra
Huse, one of Orange County's
most acclaimed artists, will
demonstrate the use of pastels.
"I find it very exciting,"
Huse said. "You get out there,

Headed by Pettit and local

years to raise funds to purchase

September, yet despite already
accumulating more than
$200,000, the group must more
than double that amount to pur-

The funding struggle can be
daunting, but "you have to-give

said. "Today, kids do~'t have

The theater, built from rein-

In a world of 6 billion people, I
suppose there could be two nicer,
more generous and genuine peo-
ple than the Creans, but it's
damned unlikely. lf you know
John and Donna, consider your-
self lucky. U you don't. all you
need to know is this: It isn't
what's in a person's bank account
that matters. It's what's in thejr
heart.
John and Donna's generosity
has touched the lives of thou-
sandS and thousands of people·-
not with handouts, but a helping
band. Happy anniversary, John
and Donna. What are we doing
for your ? 5th?
Now the bad. We are lucky, I
think, that the bad guys are not
smart. I'm sorry. Did I say "not
smart?• •Dumb• is better. Wait.
"Brain dead• is best.
I was particularly impressed
with Monday's performance by
two fledgling Unabombers at
Estancia High School. Not that
you missed it, but let's go over
the details. For reasons unbe-
knownst and unfathomable to
anyone, Ted-1 and Ted-2 decide
that it's a good day to blow
somelliing up. They load their
Chevy Cavalier with enough
black powder, chemicals and fus-
es to launch themselves and a
small office building into orbit.
Right there, you know lliey're
nuts. You tell me. Who would
drive a Chevy Cavalier?
Target selection comes next.

Perfect. I know that phone well,
having used it ofte~ when my
son was playing baseball at
EstanC:la. The ball field is about
100 feet away. But what makes it
the perfect location is that it's
even closer to a row of homes
just beyond the parking lot wall,
most willi second-story windows
overlooking the lot. The petf ect
crime. Well-planned, well-exe-
cuted.
But wait. Why did the 1Wo
Teds blow up the phone in the
.. first place, you ask? No one
knows. The leading theory is that
lliey were after the coin box and·
its bounty of quarters -about 30
bucks in llie average pay phone.
Proving once again that God
does indeed have a sense of
humor, the entire phone was
destroyed -except for the coin
box -which remained intact
and locked tight. And that brings
us to the ugly.
Great story from New York
this week. By now, you've heard

The cabbies were outraged.
On Wednesday, all but a handfUl

•· Having shown it can test Sea

Harbor enters off-season intent
ori ~e continued improvement.· ·
. By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot
J'IEWPORT BEACH -When Corona del Mar
Hiffb elected not to field a varsity Softball team thiS spring, it left Newport Harbor as the odd team out.
·,'Newport, the only one of "five Sea ·View ~ds not ranked in the Orange County top 10,
15, however, intent on evening the competitive
slate.
; "We want to build this program to where we
can compete in this league,• said Sailors first-
year coach Frank Talley, who despite a 6-0 sea-
son-ending loss to Sea View visitor Irvine Thurs-
• day, ap~ to have a foundation in place-for
such future construction. '
"We've sl!<>wn we can play defense, but w~
need to work on our hitting in the off-season and
develop some pitching," 1alley said. ·we only
lose two seniors this year, so we have a good
nucleus returning." .
The Sailors backed up Talley's defensive
praise Thursday when freshman center fielder
April Carroll fielded a Oy ball and gunned a run-
ner out at the plate b'ying to tag up to end the
Irvine fifth.
But Talley won1t be content for his players to
spend the off-season dwelling on wishful think-
ing. Instead, he's hooked them up with travel-
ball teams to hone their skills against the kind of
competition the Sea View perennially presents.
. •Our varsity returners will be playing a good
bit of ball during the summer, and we'v~ entered
our frosb-sbph team in a summer league at Mil:-
llkan High," 1Blley explained. •we want to help
the girls coming into the program to develop .
Our junior varsity team Ulis year played some
decent ball, and we want to get to the point
where our lower levels are feeding us varsity
players."
1\vo Newport pitchers fed their fielders a
stream of playable balls Thursday, but an atypi,..
cat six-error effort allowed the playoff-bound
Vaqueros (22-C, ?-2 in league, beading into a
night game Thursday against league-lea~
Woodbridge) to cruise, despite managing onfy
four hits.
. Irvine posted just one·-earned nm. while
working out of two jams in the opening two
innings to keep Harbor (one bit) at bay.
Kyle McNichols and Carroll walked to open
the game and advanced to third and second,

spades. East won and returned a heart. and declarer's remaining heart
stopper was forced out. With only
eiaht 1ricka. declarer needed a club
trick to get home. But West grabbed
the ace on the first lead of the suit
and cashed out the hearts for a one·
trick set: • True, declarer could !Yve gotten
home by starting on clubs before
spades.z.. but that was puJ:lr aucss-
worlt. 1 ne coolnlet was as long
as the black aces. were i11 different
hands re~ardless or how the hearts
were divided, giv~n length in 1he
West hand. All declarer had to do
was refuse the first trick. 1bc heart continuation is taken in
the closed hand and, as before,
declarer leads a spade. East wins bu1
has no heart to return, so declarer
now has time to foroe out the ace of
clubs. And if East docs have a heart.
it means the suit is bceaking 4-3 and
declarer loses only two hearts and the
black-suit, aces.
