By Tim Grenda, Daily Pilot . JOHN WAYNE AIRPORT -If you're headed to the airport today to catch a flight out of town for the long Memorial Day weekend, you might want to leave yourself a lit- tle extra time. The Air nansport Association ~hich r~presents all of the majo; 81!' earners, h~ predicted today will be the bUSlest air travel day in the history of commercial avia- tion, with flights canying an esti- mated 2 million passengers. The percentage of ~ssengers I on each flight, which typically , hovers around 70%, is expected : to climb to 83 % for all airlines t worldwide, officials said Thurs- ' day. : But while the majority of air- • ports and airlines are bracing for j the busy day, John Wayne Airport 'officials are anticipating normal passenger volumes, said spokes- woman Kathleen Campini- Chambers. Because the airport caters mostly to business travelers, who generally fly during the week and take weekends off, John Wayne doesn't normally follow nation- wide patterns of vacation travel- ers, she said. "We're not really sure what will happen to us given that fact," Campini-Charnbers said. To handle any increase in pas- sengers, the airport today plans to have more parking-lot attendants on duty and run more shuttles that take passengers to and from the Main Street remote parking lot, she said. United has issued a. record number of tickets for flights today -about 320,000 -but does not expect to break its single-day "We're ver"f geared up to accommodate the numbers that are antici- pated nation- wide,• she said.
