Purchase negotiations for a

Injury is nothing new to the
fake brown elephant that has
graced the front of the Royal Thai

July 4, three dltterent
years: Chun becomes a
favorite holiday target,
though by n ow he's cement-

off chunks of Cbun's cheeks
and damage his tusks.
April .24., 1996: A night-

Despite its being stolen once, vandalized several times and, most Tecenlly, having one of its tusks
broken offc. "Chun," the teak elephant that welcomes patrons to the Royal Thai Cuisine. is still
believed to be good luck by Sumeth Tila, owner of the N~wport Meach restaurant.
· The elephant -known as a
good luck symboJ in Thailand
where it is called "Chun" -was
stolen by a 22-year-old Newport
Beach man in 1992, and found lat-
er by a surfer who st'umbled upon
it wlule at the beach.
' Since the f992 heist, the ele-
phant has su!fered three incidents
of vandalism, each occurring on
the Fourth of July, Tila said. Each
ma dent not only costs 1Ua money,
but upsets employees and cus-
tome rs ahke who are fond of
Chun, he sa1d.
"When he WdS first stolen , one
of my employees was crying; now
she's not really happy,· Tua said.

•Last Fourth of July, a customer
was so concerned (for the ele-

And time and time again Tila

he said. He is even considering

"It's worth irto repair, w he said.

When Corona del Mar resident

the candidates will be able to

"TQe City Council seems to
get a little political at times and
it shouldn't be,· said Noyes, the
owner of John Noyes Jewelry.
·Ralph and 1 are friends and I
hope we can just deal with the
·issues.•
Noyes lives on Balboa
Island. Rodheim owns a home
.on the island that is currently
rented out, and lives in the De
Anza Mobile Home Park in
Bayside Village, which is within
the 5th District boundaries.
Noyes is president of both
the Balboa Island Business
Association and the island's
Business Improvement District.
In an early campaign statement
written for the Daily Pilot, he
lists Crime prevention and the
revitalization of business dis-
tricts as areas of concern.
Rodheim als'o calls public
safety a "No. 1" priority .rftnd
says that the council should
focus on improving the city's
financial stability and on posi-
tive image-buildipg.
"There are so many nega-
tives happening, it's time we
get somebody positive, a cheer-
leader,• said Rodheim, "some-
body who can move the city
into the next century tn a posi-
tive way.~ .
Noyes and Rodheim both
said they hope to give some-
thing back to a city in which
they have prospered. Both said
they have peen encouraged to

the community.
"People have come to me
and it really boosts your confi-

Since she has known for
some time of Noyes' plans, Watt
said it cam~ as somethllig ol a
surprise that Rodheim would
join the fray. "They both come
from the same kind of Balboa
Island neighborhood,• said
Watt.
But a race that includes
Noyes, Rodheim and possibly
Adams would be good for the
city, Watt said.
"The community will have
some good choices if those
three run," said Watt.
