•Newport Harbor High parents concerned that
getting field ready for fo~tball season is taking
priority over upcoming commencement exercises.
By Husein Mashni, Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BEACH -Less
than a month before commence-
ment exercises are held at New-
port Harbor High School, work has
begun on a long-awaited renova-
tion of Davidson Field where stu-
dents and their families will gather
as diplomas are awarded to 359
graduates in the class of 1998.
But some NewpOrt Harbor par-
ents are concerned that work on
the field, which will continue
well into the summer, had to start
so close to the June 18 gradua-
tion ceremonies. School officials
said the renovation began now
so it can be dotie in time _for the
first Newport Harbor football
game against Orange High
School on Sept. 11.
•They had to make a choice
whether they wanted to make it
g'ood for football season and bad
for graduation,• said Newport
BeaCh parent Jennifer MacMas-
ters. •They made their choice
and it'll be a big mess out there
and we'll have to just decorate
the mess.•
MacMasters, whose son is
among the graduates, said a peti-
tion was signed by 161 Newport
Harbor parents urging the New-
port-Mesa school district to post-
pone repairs on the field until
after commencement.
Buf the district decided to
move ahead with plans to reno-
vate the field, which began Fri-
day with the spraying of chemi-
cals to kill the grass so it can be
recrowned and resodded. The
track will be graded and a new
public address system will be
installed.
The company overseeing the
renovation is Goodland Land-
scape Construction Inc. of lrvine.
The school board allocated
$190,000 for the reno;vation, but
the low bid came in at $113,000.
Some parents feel the district's
decision to start work on the field
so close to graduation is sending
the wrong message to students
taking his Cor-j
vette, leaving only Jacobson's
white Corvette convertible, 11
which he said he bought before
Bernd got his. 1 .--~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~-.
But with Jacobson's retirement I
in June, the era of white
Corvettes at the administration I
building will be over -unless 1 someone else in the district starts I

The OCC professor quickly I

out and bought a lo!>ster dinner.• !
Kelly had another encounter !
with the small crabs on Catalina l
Island, where the beach, from a l
boat offshore, looked like it was i
covered with red sand, he said. I
Seagulls and other birds began j

their eyes were bigger than their 1

"Their bellies were so fat they !

Imaginarium
entertains children
with color, light shows

COSTA MESA -Large, bright squares
that imprison people. Six-foot puppies that
follow you around. And a futuristic, egg-
shaped city.
What kind of crazy world do we live in?
Kids got an alternative and creative
dose of entertalnment at the Imaginarium
over the weekend. Presented by the
Orange County Performing Arts Center
and the county's Department of Education,
children were able to make masks, be a
radio d1sc jockey and listen to music. The
exhibits were devoted to kids and the ones
who are young at heart.
•There is all sorts of stuff to do,• said 12-
year-old Kyle Stevens of Anaheim. •Today
I've already made a noodle cart, talked on
the radio and designed a kite. What else do
they have here?•
Well, an inflatable world for one. Wrap-
ping up the weekend's lineup was a color-
ful performance by Fred Garbo and Daiel-
ma Santos. The two entertainers juggled,
danced 1p1d bounced around for the young
crowd in the frantic 70-minute .show at
,,. Se.geJl!~m Hall. Kids were wowed by
large cubes that crawled and ballooned on
the stage. li'apped in.side was Garbo who
humored the audience by putting the col-
ored squares in the laps of a few of those in
the first row.
The centerpiece of the lmaginariwn was
•Meggopolis, • a multicolored indoor play-
ground for intrigued kids. Under the egg-
shaped domes, children were treated to a
melange of colors, sounds and light. They
ventured from dome to dome as colors
changed on their faces and clothes.

Byers, whose daughter also will
be graduating, agrees.
"l think they've lost sight of
why we send our kids to

a sad situation. I'm not sending
my children to high school to
watch a football game, but to

RUDESILL, HANCOCK TO M ASTERS f
Costa Mesa boys finish in fifth place.
By Jason Hill, Dally Piiot
CERRITOS -After spending a few minutes
with Costa Mesa High track coach John Car-
ney, it is easy to see why his athletes performed
so well at the Division m track finals on Satur-
day at Cerritos College.
Few coaches get as excited as he does when
one of his athletes performs well.
Camey was handsomely rewarded as the
Mustangs finished fifth in the boys meet and
tied for 15th in the girls meet. 1'wo of his ath-
letes, Matthew Rudesill and Bruce Hancock,
advanced to Friday's Master's meet.
"I got some really great kids,• Camey said.
"I'm so proud of all of them.•
Rudesill was the first of his athletes to com-
pete. Camey watched as Rudesill finished
second in Division m shot put with a throw of
52-41/2. The throw InlSsed qualifying for the
Master's by just six inches.
•Rudesill was doing well in the discus early
ln the season,· Camey said. "Then he decided
to concentrate on the shot put. It's a shame he
couldn't have thrown a little farther today.·
Rudesill did recover in the discus and his
throw of 160-8 was good enough to place third
in Division ill and qualified him for Master's .
"He has a good chance at advancing to the
state finals,• Camey said of the UC Santa Bar-
bara-bound senior. •There are a couple of guys
who throw over 180 consistently and they
should finish first and second. The other three
spots are up for grabs and anyone can take
them."
Between watching the shot put and discus,
Camey kept a close eye on his runners, includ -
ing Hancock, who competed in the 1,600 and
the 800. Hancock, despite wonying his coach
about the pace he was setting, finished second
in the 1,600 with a time of 4:1,9.38 and
advanced to Friday's meet.
"When he was leading by more than 10

Carney had an army of stopwatches running lo

when it became clearer that Hancock had one 1

Hancock didn't place in the 800 and was a ~

Camey's patience and enthusiasm found its I
biggest reward in Costa Mesa's last event, the I
1,600 relay. He expected his team, Julie Kroen-f

• Steen becomes part of an elite
group of freshman to make it to
Friday night's Master's Meet.
CERRITOS -Ma.king it to the Master's
meet at the end of the track season is diffi.
cult for any track athlete. After grinding it
out ln league finals and in the prellms, an
athlete must finish with one of the top nine
times in all four divisions to advance.
Few athletes make it into that elite group.
which is what makes Newport · Harbor's
Amber Steen's accompll$hment so 'magic.al.
She is a freshman. ·
Steen, the Sea View League champion,
ran a personal record 5:06.19 in the Division
ll 1,600, fourth in her division and eighth
overall in Saturday's CIF Division finals at
Cerritos College.
•1t feels so good to make it to the Mas-
ter's,• Steen said. ·still. I didn't feel like I ran
my best race. I know that Yucaipa's runners
like to go out fast. so I just let them go. But
they didn't go out as fast as I thought•
Steen won't make the same mistake
twice and plans to stay closer to the~ck at
Friday's meet. If she succeeds, she could
place in the top five and make it to the state
finals.
•I Uunk she has an excellent chance to
make it to state,• Sailors Coach Eric 1\veit
said. "She has the right mental approach
and knows she has a great finish. If she can
go out strong and stay close, she could easi-
ly make It.·
Fnday's race will definitely test Steen's
ability because the pace will be set Univer-
sity's Allison Marquand and Nordhoff's
Elaine Canchola. Marquand, who won the
Division m race with a time of 4:55.43,
defeated Canchola by 1.36 seconds. Can-
