I will, however, urge her to focus on the academic cur- rictilum that develops and sus- tains the intellectual growth of all -repeat, all -students who attend district schools. Some years ago, after reading Hutchins' essay, I chose to test his statement that the curriculum. is extra by reviewing a number of yearbooks from high school graduating classes. I was amazed to find the yearbooks were full of photographs -almost 95 % of the pages had pictures of the stu- dents in individual, formal and• candid poses as well as in atlilet- ic and club groups. There was absolutely no indication that any- one in the graduating class had excelled or had been honored mailbag academically. A most glaring omission was the absence of any- thing in writing -any indication or evidence that someone·in the class was capable of writing a class history or testament. It was obvious to me, as I perused these yearbooks, that Something was amiss in acade- mia. I'm afraid GeiH.r-Sandoval's strong pitch for the academic teanis that have been dropped may be misdirected and should be focused on the more signifi- cant problems that deal with the academic curriculum. t.EmRIS lAVRAKAS, PH.D.
