George Yardley rules as the

School product of 50 years ago
may have all the credentials of a
d,inosaur -with enshrinement
coming at age 67, 36 years after
his final NBA hoop.
But Yardley has taken this
New England city by storm.
Sunday's autograph session
was a prime example.
As he entered the auditorium
· ahead or some 300 fans lined up
for the event, he pulled me past
the Hall of Fame security.
MHe:s corrung with me," Yard-
ley said. MHe's my father."
The Hall of Fame representa-
tive grinned ever so slightly,
and said, "Anything you say,
George."
Over the course of the after-
noon. Yardley signed about 400
autographs, wisecracked and
bantered with everyone from his
wife, Diana, to 9-year-old fans
and teenage girls in and around
the Marriott Hotel -all in good
cheer and yet just another day
for the Hall of Farner.
All the residuals of the honor
seemed to be falling in place for
Yardley, whose physical and
emotional presence overshad-

about as unsafe.

I ~arenting with
respect to names
, I used to think the only
"name calling" I'd have to
• contend with as a parent
was the "sticks and stones"
variety.Butlhaverecently
found myself scrambling to
establish some consistency in
how my three young sons are
addressing the adults in their
world. I discovered that in
some cases, they were using
first names. In other cases,
they were using last names.
And in many cases, they were
avoiding confrontation alto-
gether.
It was so clear-cut when I
was a lcid. Grown-ups were
addressed as Mr. or Mrs. So-
and-So. Well, not always. My
sisters and I were allowed to
call my parents' "old college"
cronies by their first names,
but school and church-orient-
ed grown-ups were always
called by their last names.
Except Don and Patsy. They
belonged to our church, but
they were also cousins. And
our grown-up cousins, how-
ever distant, were addressed
by their first Da.mes. .
Except for Maurice Foley.

sincerity, "Thank you very
much, Peggy.• It feels intimate
and dear.
Still, there is no dol/-bt that
first names breed a certain
familiarity that can play out
dangerously between genera-
tions. How will all this first-
name stuff sound when my
sons are older. I can bear it
now, "Peg, whaddya say,
another round of brews for my
bros here."
He was a cousin, but we
always addressed him as Dr.
Foley because he had an
important title, and also
because my sisters and I were
neve r really sure whether his
first name was pronounced
"Morris" or "Maureece." Any-
way, "titled· adults, especially
religious, were addressed by
their professional names.
A nd, as we all know, there's
no turning back. Once
you get a fix on a name, it's
very difficult to ever change it.
Our darling 6-year-old neigh-
bor Gavin is in the throes of
such a dilemma. He has an
irrepressible talent for greet-
ing everyone in the neighbor-
hood with a great big friendly
personalized "hello" when be
spots you. "Pegggeeee, hall-
lo!" he calls down the street
with much enthusiasm.
SW11n the formative stages, Balboa Wand appears sparsely settled 1n this photo (circa 1930) taken from the Corona del Mar side.
Except for Father Tom,
whom most everybody called
"Mad Dog."
OK, maybe it wasn't so
clear-cut. But the exceptions
came as second nature to us

Today, however, parents
seem to be ill at ease with the
whole issue. "What would you
like Johnny to call you?" I've
been asked a lot recently by
other parents. Are they
expecting me to reveal some
hidden title in my name?
"Well, gee, Lt. Col. Nor-
mandin would be fine.•
It has been my experience
that what a child calls·me
communicates far less than
how he says it. For example,
I've heard young men yell
across thef.layground to me,
"Hey, Mrs. Normandin, throw
me the ball" with all the rev-
erence of someone hooting,
"Yo, Toots, What it isl"

the other morning. He hesitat-
ed for a moment. "Hi, Peg, I ·
mean, Mrs. Normaly, um, Mrs.

I know how he feels. Old
habits die hard. Sometime
after I 13ot marrted, my moth-

friends started giving me per-
mission to call them by their

Tue birth
of an island
--..--
This was the birth of Balboa
Island, and perl}aps, the first stir-
ring of environmental concern by
Newport citizens. "Rape of New-
port Harbor" shouted the news-
papers. Boaters cried foul, and
Capt. D.E. Hughes, who was
called in to inspect the dre<'lging,
called it the most ·notorious off-
shore real estate venture in
Orange Coast rf·
Collins w-.s bed by
the outcry. By had sold
more than 700 lots on his sludge
pile and had at least 600 more to
sell.
But als0 in 1914, his luck
began to change. He never
made any improvements he had
promised in his lavish
brochures; there were few utili-
ties; and high tides flooded the
residents out frequently. His
dreams of a casino and a speed-
way encircling the island went
awry.

The good ~d the

Councilwoman Sandra
Genis.
Last Wednesday, the Newport·

Mesa City Council got together
for a joint rap session to discuss
some closed school properties the
district may be' interested in sell·
ing and the dty in buying.
But Genis decided to veer
way off that course and use the
forum to grill school board mem-
bers on such issues as"school ·
busing and the cost of port.able
classrooms, something the dis·
trict had already taken up in
public hearings.
School boa.rd members were
rightly exasperated that she was
nosing into their business.
If Genis wanted to discuss those
issues, she should have marched
herself down to the school board
meeting room and waited in line
to do so with the rest of the public,
not blatantly comer board mem-
bers at a joirll meeting, where they
are a captive audience.
I tell you if there is a better
argument for temilimits than
Sandy Genis, I don't know what is.

But for every official who makes
a case for term limits, there's anoth-

The Newport Beach term limit

.And that's too bad.
Watt, a founder of the New-

been the lone environmental
voice and clean-water advocate
on the Newport council.
She fought hard to stop devel-
opment on the Castaways and
Newporter North properties, los-

shell out assessment fees.

WHEN A WARNING
LIGHT COMES ON
When' the red brake warning
light flashes on the insttument
panel, some drivers may doubt
that they have a probl'em
because their brakes either feel
normal or there is only a slight
difference in brake pedal felll.
The fact is, however, that the red
warning light may be indicatin9 a
serious problem while the braking
system remains largely functional·
for the time being. This is
because modern cars are
equipped with a dual braking
system. There is a separate
hydraulic system for the front
brakes and another for the rear
brakes. The split may also be
between one front wheel and its
diagonal rear-wheel counterpart
and the other two wheels .
Regardless of how the split is
configured, when a brake-fluid
leak occurs and there is a drop in
brake-fluid pressure wh en
braking, a valve will shut off half
the brake system, the red
warning light then flashes,
signaling that the problem should
be addressed imm~(jiately
because total brat<§ failure could
be just around the comer.
H!NT: The brake warning light might also come on because the
rear brakes are in need of ad ustment.
WHAT'S THAT
KNOCKING?
A gasoline's octane number is
a measure of Its resistance to
the condition papularly known
as Mknocklng . This metallic
rattling sound emanating from
the engine is usually heard
under hard acceleration or hill·
climbing and Is caused by
uncontrolled burning of the
air/fuel mixture. Under normal
conditions, this air/fuel mixture
Is ignited by a spark in the
combustion chamber at a
precise time In the engine
cycle. When heat in the
combustion chamber becomes
too high, the mixture can ignite
spontaneously, Independent of
the spark plug. This
uncontrolled burning produces
pressure changes and shock
waves that can spell trouble. If
loud knocking persists when the
accelerator Is not depressed, It
Is a serious condition that
should be Investigated.

YARDLEY • .. CONTINUED FROM 1 •
. The 'attention and light·he4rt-
edness served as a prelude for
tonight's ceremonies, but Yard-
ley maintained he will not sur-
render to the emotion that can
knock down the biggest of men
when touched by the culmina-
tion of the event
He has waited many years
but insists he was not envious -
or piqued by rejection -as
many entered the doors here !ar-
less credentialed.
"You fe~ good for those
guys,• Yardley said. "But the
thing is -l have ~ compulsory
need to go to work on Monday.
Now that I am here, yes, it's a lot
of fun. But I'm not any better
'than before.
•LlJce most things, it's impor-
tant only because you don't have
them. lpeo when you finally get
what you are looking for, you
still need something-to look! for-
ward to." :.
One of the great stars of his
time, Yardley bolds no illusions
of the talent he possessed. Few
from days gone by would stand
a chance against today's players.
•Kareem and Wilt, they were
institutions,• Yardley admitted.
But he gave no one else any
chance at all -not ev~n an
Oscar Robertson or a Jeiry West.
As for the qmosaur theory -
the "Big O~ was elected to the
Hall of Fame at age 41, Bob Pet-
tit at 38, Jerry Lucas at 39, Bob
Cousy at 42, Wilt at 42, Bill Shar-
man at 49.
George Miltan was 35, Hank
Luisetti 43, Red Auerbach 51.
The list goes on and on.
Few, however, have taken
_ove r ~rin_gfield like the garru-
lous Yardley.
His appointment brought old
friends back together -high-
Ughted by a visit from the man
who passed him the ball for the
memorable bucket tha\ sent him
.over the 2,000-point mark in
1958 with the Detroit Pistons.
' "I could have made the shot
easy," said Bill Kenville in a
lighthearted chatter, "but you
,bad such a lead, I had to pass it.•
Yardley's barrier-breaker at
2,000 was the end of an era in
the NBA.
A year later, Wilt Chamber-
lain arrived and the "barnstorm-
ing" era began to fade.
Taller, faster, quick.er players
with something called the verti-
cal leap began to transform the
game quickly, aside from the
advent of television and money.
Yardley's contract with the
Fort Wayne Pistons as he began
his·pro career was $9,000. His
top salary was $21,000 with the
Pistons.
Nevertheless, Yardley, as well
as teammates from the past,
insist they're glad they had their
days and nights in the era of the
'40s, '50s and '60s.
"Today's game lacks the
camaraderie of that era,• Yard-
ley said. "Money is a horrible
curse.•

the top boys athlete in the Pacific

officials had such an award.
Since they don't, the Estantia

won the long jump (20-9 1/2)
and the 100 in 11.43, running
into a bead wind.
"No question, Chris would
have been named the top

But if there was a gold medal given for
sportsmAnship, Melissa Swigert would
have stood atop the bi-level victory plat-

Swigert, competing in the (born in) 1986

medal -in the '86 girls 100-yard dash, as
event tj.mers, distracted by another runner's
