Weekend cabn for
cops, despite number
of drunken drivers
The Cinco de Mayo weekend
was relatively quiet, except for
one alleged drunken driver, who
crashed into a power pole Sun.day
and caused traffic problems fo.r
five hours, police s~d.
Noe Brito, a 37-year-old West-

allegedJy i.Jltoxicated, was arrest-

Tom Lazar said.
"We directed traffic for five
hours," Lazar said.
Bnto was arrested for driving
under the influence of alcohol
and suffered minor injuries from
the collision, Lazar said.
But Brito wasn't the only one
oted for DUI VlOlations over the
holiday weekend.
At a DUI checkpoint held from
9 p.m. Friday to 1 a .m. Saturday
at the Costa Mesa Freeway and
Flower Street, police arrested
nine motonsts for allegedly dri-
vmg under the influence of alco-

"The fest:JVlbes were quiet,"
said Lazar, who added that it was
a good thing the holiday fell on a
Sunday and not a Saturday.

which he fought f o.r six months with Mus-

fled the country in 1994 so that Asim
could finish his education.
But school teachers and office workers,
who have worked closely with Asim, are
detemiuied to help him have a normal
senior year like his American peers.
In addition to Monday's party, the high
school faculty contributed money to pay
Asim's part a senior trip called "Supai" to

weekend, for the senior prom and for the

Toll road construction
detour open to traffic
•Move will allow traffic to flow as work· continues
on new San Joaqu.ln Hills tollway.
By Evan Henerson, Daily Pilot
A' just-completed detour will
allow motorists to travel on a
small section of what will even-
tually be part of the San
Joaquin Hills toll ro.ad.
Builders with the nansporta-
tion Corridor Agencies -which
is constructing the road -
opened the detour Monday.
The detour extends from where
Ne\vport Coast Drive forms a
loop ramp and eventually con-
nects to Bonita Canyon Drive.
•1t•s not that people will end
up in a different place,• said toll
agency spokesperson Lisa
Telles. "But they're driving on
the actual pavement of the cor-
ridor. T)ley'll drive through a
loop ramp so people will notice
a diffe'rence."
The traffic switch allows
agency workers t~ continue the
construction of t.})e toll road.
Once construction ends and
the toll road opens, that portion
of Newport Coast Drive will
become part of the toll road and
will carry a 50 cent charge.
"It's not that
people will end up
in a different
place ... They'll
drive through a
loop ramp ... "
-USA TEu.ES
However, the county of
Orange is building an exten-
sion of Newport Coast Drive,
which will run parallel to the
toll road and link up to Bonita
Canyon Drive. That toll-free
bypass is scheduled to open in
early 1997.
The section of the -corridor
stretching from Laguna Canyon
Road to the Corona Del Mar
Fr:eeway is scheduled to open
in December of this year.

We Could use another
round of Bal-Rum-Boas
T bis ls the Ume of the year
that former Citizens of the
· Year gather around and
select this year's recipient.
The Citizen of the Year con-
cept originated in 1949. That
year, Bob Murphy was selected
as the town's premier citizen -
the first Citizen of the Year. And
just who was Bob Murphy?
Well, Bob Murphy was quite a
guy. He came to town during the
early '30s as a professional gam-
bler. running one of our Main
Street gambling joints when the
town was wide open Then, in
the later 193C>s, Bob saw the com-
ing end of our honky tpnk era
and stepped out of gdl'Tlbling into
the saloon business. He bought
Bill Ireland's Bar on Main Street
and re-named it the Bamboo
Room. ln so doing. he put a:n end
to ~me of Balboa's cherished tra-
ditions, Bill Ireland's justly
famous Bal-Rum-Boas.
1llis drink had long been a
favorite at Bill Ireland's and Justi-
fiably so. It was one of the great
bargains of the post-Prohibition
era. It consisted of four jiggers of
rum, mixed with some phony
tropical frwt juice The reason for
its p<>pulanty was th at it sold for
75 cents. Even with dnnks going
for a quarter, a Bal·Rurn-Boa was
obviously a bargain.
Depending on the size of the
ji9ger and the atbtude of the bar-
tender, you got between fo ur and
six ounces of rum for your 75
cents. Today you JUSt can't ge t
bargains like that.
Well. the first thing Bob Mur·
phy, a hard-headed business

•Yardley admits making the Hall of Fame means a lot
to him, especially sharing it with his family and bis fel-
low inductees of the Class of '96.
By Roger Carlson, Daily Piiot
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -With
his life's treasures just a few
feet away, George Yardley
reached the pinnacle of the 54-
year odyssey which began at
Newport Harbor High School in
1943, culminating with
enshrinement at basketball's
Hall of Fame at the Civic Cen -
ter here in this New England
~hub of hoops Monday night.
True to his word, he ke pt his
speech lighthearted and the
crowd of near 1,000 ·loved it.
After a vintage video of
Yardley owning the floor, and
master of ceremonies Billy
Packer introducmg him as "a
pretty free-spirit, .. George

Nancy's. She should be livid.•
As always, George worked
the crowd to the limit. He
virtually buried Bill Walton, to
the crowd's delight.
Earlier in private conversa-
tion, Yardley revealed his true
feelings for the moment.
"It means a lot to me," the
67-year-old Newport Beach
res'ident said. "But nowhere
near what it means to me in
the knowledge of what it
means to my family. They're
really proud of me and that
means a lot. I take pleasure
forever in that.•

Monday's ceremonies

Sailors, on the heels of their best performance of
the season, travel south on Pacific Coast Highway
for their first-round match in tbe CIF Southern
Section Division I boys volleyball playoffs Friday
(7 p .m.), while Coach Steve Conti's Corona del Mar
Sea Kings host Redondo Union. -
. Newport Harbor (8-7), a third-place finisher in
the S~a View League, in which the S~ors ended
7-3 after upsetting league champion Santa
Margarita, play Laguna Beach (13-2), the ninth-
ranked team in Division I.
CdM (9-5), the Sea View's second-place team,
faces an unknown challenger in Redondo Union
(11-3), the Ocean League's No. 2 team.
NI like our draw, I like who we're playing and I
like having a home match in the first round," Conti
said. •1 like how we've been playing, espacially in
the second round of league, and if we can improve
in a few .areas, there's no telling whete this team .
can be two weeks from now.•
Newport Harbor came from behind aod
knocked off Santa Margarita fast Thursday in the
Sea View finale, 15-8, 8-15, 12-15, 15-10, 15-10, to
set the tone for its playoff run ..
"I think we played the best game of the year
against Santa Margarita, so if we can stay on a roll,
we might be able to get through these teams," said
Glenn, whose squad will probably face Huntington
Beach in the second round if it gets past Lag\Ul4
Beach. ,
"I'm not surprised with our draw,• Glenn added.
~I knew we would get in the opening round a
first-place team or a real good secon'1-place team,
and we ended up getting a real good first-place
team. which has only lost twice this year. Laguna
Beach also beat (second-seeded) Capistrano Valley
this year.• .
The Sailors lost to Laguna Beach in five games
earlier this year, including a decisive fifth game,
16-14.
·"It's not an easy road at all," Glenn.said. "And I
think Huntington Beach is the best team·in CIP
right now. They beat Laguna Beach in three
straight recently, they be4t San Marcos (Channel
League champion) in three straigpt up there, they
beat Esperanza. In looking at the whole bracket, I
think the toughest first-round draw is ours.•
CdM would probably play Capo Valley in the
second .f'ound. . •
"I think we're going to have to play at the top of
our game to get to where we want to do," Conti
said. "I remember Redondo earlier in the year at
the Redondo Tow:nament, but we really didn't see
them or pay much attention to them, because we
didn't play them.~
In the Sailors' victory over Santa Margarita, it
was the Eagles' first Sea View setback of the sea-
son and the first time the Eagles had been
stretched to five games all season.
The victory also put the Tars over the .500 mark
for the first time in 1996.
Newport Harbor is paced by Wes Badorek, Matt
Caldwell, setter li'avis Nelson, Brian Fox, Cameron
Black and Eric Bernhard. CdM is led by Brian
Coleman, Blair Hoppe, Derek Newcomer, Dennis
Alshuler and Greg Burden.
