• School board decides against transfer of 150 to 300
students to Newport-Mesa schools.
By Husein Mashni, Daily Pilot
The Laguna Beach school
board unanimously voted Mon-
day to keep within its boundaries
a sliver of Newport Coast that it
was considering transferring to
the Newport-Mesa school dis-
trict.
Board members decided to
discontinue months of dialogue
with the Newport-Mesa school
district, the city of Laguna Beach
and The Irvine Co. about the area
on the Laguna Beach side of
Newport Coast Drive in Newport
Coast.
Tue area is expected to have
an enrollment of 150 to 300 stu-
dents. Because the rest of New-
port Coast's students attend
Newport-Mesa schools and the
district has classroom space, the
Laguna Beach school board was
considering transferring the area
to the Newport-Mesa school dis-
trict.
But after months of negotia-
tions, the board decided to keep
the area and the students in its
own district -a decision that will
net them $6.4 million in mitiga-
tion fees from The Irvine Co.

spokeswoman for The Irvine Co.
•But we think both districts offer

gain about $6 million that could
have been used to repair its

We've got elementary schools

and they're spending $100,000-
plus to redo a football field -
and they're doing it in the mid-

The state Senate gave its nod to a plan that, if
approved by the Assembly, would pay for regular
dredgings or the Back Bay. Sen. Ross Johnson (R-
lrvine) sponsored the plan, which calls for the creation
or a permanent annuity in which funds for bay dredg-
mgs would accwnulate at a rate of $400,000 a year.
Sounds Like a great plan. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Balhoa-stylefighting means
less danger of getting hurt
A s I look back on Balboa
during its rowdy days -
the late 1920s and early
1930s -there were lots of
fights.
There also was a great deal
of drinking, whether straight
alcohol for two bits an ounce at
the Drugless Drugstore during
Prohibition, or Balrumboas with
four jiggers of rum for 7 5 cents
at Bill Ireland's open-air bar
after Prohibition's repeal. Some-
how, drinking and fighting
seem to go together.
1 have heard that alcohol
dulls the inhibitory nerves. I
guess that means that we all
have the seeds of violence in us
and we become quarrelsome
when those seeds are released
after the consumption of alco-
hol. So with lots of drinking
there is lots of lighting.
But our fighting, wbile per-
vasive, h~dly was dangerous.
Most of it took place on the
beach after dark. Sugar R~y
Robinson, who is considered to
have been the greatest fighter,
pound for pound, in the history
of boxing, would have a hard
time being very dangerous
fighting an opponent in the
dark while standing in deep
sand.
Fighting usually started in
two places -on Main Street or
at the Rendezvous Ballroom. In
either place, the fight usually
ended up on the beach.
Three magnificent police
officers -George Callihan,
Frank Naylor and Kenny Gor-
ton -handled the crowds on
Mam Street. When a fight
broke out, they simply took the
gladiators lo the boardwalk,
pushed them out on the sand
and told them to finish the fight
there.
If the fight broke out in the
Rendezvous, we gate boys tried
to keep the participants apart
until manager Dick Whitson
arnved. Whitson, who could be
quite persuasive, took the com-
batants out of the dance hall
and to the beach and told them
to fight it Qut there.
As mchcated. fighting on the
beach at night was a baffling
affair. I remember one night
when a couple of the locals
decided to duke it out. They
were escorted lo the beach by
the police. with quite a group of
us locals following. Each gladi-
ator already was drunk. We
would aim the fighters at each
other. then stand back to watch
the fray. The fighters would
start toward each other, get lost
in the dark, flail away at noth-
robe rt
gardner
ing, then fall down. At this
point, their friends would gath-
er them up, aim them at each
other again, all to no avail.
Finally, the whole bunch would
return to Bill Ireland's for some
more Balrumboas.
As indicated, the fighters
usually were grabbed either
by the police or Whitson
before any blows were landed.
Fights usually began with an
exchange of words and then
some shoving. About that
time, the contestants were out
on the beach where they
flailed away at each other in
the dark with no appreciable
damage.
One man didn't play by the
usual rules. His name was
Whitey. He was a rather tall,
slim man, quiet, with a nice
smile. Whitey cheated. When
the confrontation was out of
the conversational stage and
getting to the shoving stage
and before Whitson or the
police arrived, Whitey would
slug his opponent. When Whit-
son or the police arrived, there
was no one to send out on the
beach, just one guy lying on
the floor of the dance hall or on
Main Street and Whitey just
standing there with his nice
smile. There was nothing left
to do but for the friends of the
guy on the floor or the street to
carry him away. I never saw
Whitey throw more than one
punch. Obviously, I never saw
him lose a fight.
But aside from Whitey,
almost all the fights took place
on the beach and in that envi-
ronment, which was hostile to
the manly art of self-defense,
not too many punches landed.
The moral of this story is that
if you must fight, do it at night
on a beach. There is less danger
of anyone being hurt.

Ferrell said she never bad an
interest in pursuing an administra-

has many students whose parents
used to be her pupils as well. Her
current room mother; for instance,

and I feel that way more for my

In her years at Mariners, Ferrell
said she has had so many magic
moments with her students and
Orange County for larger-sized
concerts.
By turning down the volume
at Pacific Amphitheatre, the con-
cert promoter turned •decibels
into dollars,· Malcolm said. He
added that the sound restrictions
limited fair officials from attract-
ing well-recognized musicians.
Tests conducted by an inde-
pendent agency showed the 92-
decibel level required at the mix-
ing boarti near the stage couldn't
work with the 86-decibel limit at
the top of a berm behind the
grass seating.
Nederlander attorney Beau
Miller said the "so-called" con-
spiracy alleged by fair officials is
nothing more than an easy-fix
-solution to an ongoing problem.
At one point, Miller compared
the case and its major players to
the fabled Watergate debacle

said. "You've lived your We. But
when you're so young, it's just so

After retirement Ferrell, a New-

parents: "It's so important to accept
your child for who they are. Praise

make big steps later.·
He said the decibel figures
were incorrect and the jury
couldn't find in favor of the fair-

"It just doesn't make a law-

and fair officials filed separate
lawsuits. One claim, known as
the concerned citizens case,
resulted in new sound restric-

Richard Spix, another Neder-

simple why fair officials filed
their lawsuit.

NEWPORT BEACH -Though a lo9k

wise, the Newport Harbor High boys vol-

during the course of its unbeaten Sea

The Sailors' a billty to break the will of
its highly regarded league foes, however,
was decidedly more obvious .
Considering the Orange County top 10

went on to win CIF Southern Section
titles, the level of domination displayed
by Coach Dan Glenn's Tars was nothing
short of astounding.

the entire regular season.
But the Tars routinely proved too tough
for some of the best teams in the section,
including eventual section champs Santa

•1 think people understand how diffi-
cult winning the league and going unde-
feated was, especially when they see the
success Cd.M and Santa Margarita had in
the postseason," Glenn said. •Irvine start-
