She's also had to deal with complaints from residents living near the Soup Kitchen's new, but temporary, location at the Iglesia Cristiana Church on Hamilton Street, located less than a block CHOOSE YOUR DOCTOR Health lnsurance (Any) Doctor You Choose Rated A+ By lk st Sansevieri lnsurance Services lnc . 714 722-6078 ruSTIN MAR~UWN "~. ; .. •· ' . away from the Rea Community Center, where the charity is head- quartered. ~Things have just been terri- ble," HaUeberg sa..ld. At least si hall-dozen angry West Side residents on Monday urged the City Council to do whatever it could to move the Soup Kitchen out of the West Side neighborhood. And letters have continued to flow into City Hall. "We have received a couple of letters since Monday," City Man- ager Allan Roeder said Thursday .. »And I believe some of the coun· cil me~bers have had a few phone c!alls, all generally opposed to the Soup Kitchen relocating (in the Rea Community Center neighborhood)." Residents were successful in driving the Soup Kitchen's. serv- ibg owation and another charity, the SOS poverty relie( center. out of Rea several yeart ago, saying the patrons were creatirlg clistur- . batices, loitering and leaving a mess in their neighbdrhoods. Now, city officials said they're going to keep a close watch f>n the Soup Kitchen's activities. And, Roeder said, the city is drafting a letter advising the Soup Kitchen that its food-giving ministry must be contained to the Iglesia Cris- tiana Church Iadlity. That might not be M e4SY task for HaUeberg and her volunteers. Her new location is much Stnaller than the First United Methodist ball, making it impossible for her to serve all of the 200 to 300 peo- ple who have come to rely on her service. So, she's been serving only bot soup and then d.istribut· · ing sack lunches as the patrons .leave the facility. The dty asked SOS to suspenct its sack lunch program last year, hoping it would eliminate a num- ber of public nuisance problems that were occuning in the area around its Superior Avenue cen- ter. And if problems arise as a result of the Soup Kitchen's sack lunches •. the city may ask Hatle- ber,g to stop handing them out too. "Our position on the sack lunches is going lo be the same as with SOS,• Roeder said. "They had been providing sack lunches. and we asked them to discontin- ue it, which they did. And they never reinstated the program. "We would prefer they not be providing sack lunches after the patrons finish their meal. Our concern is that the debris from the lunches is gojng to end up in the neighborhood."
