' Newpon Bach/Costa Mesa Daily PilOC WEDNESDAY, MAY 15, 1996 • Debates should drop name calling Newport Dunes to be site of FISH fund-raiser I don't think a day bas gone by since he died six months ago that I haven't missed my friend, Don Strauss. I've missed his courtliness, his even-handed- ness in weighing sometimes emotional issues, his refusal to judge those with whom he dis- agreed, his hwnor and self- . awareness, his friendship given without reservation. · All of these qualities were accessible to me at our regular breakfasts and lunches, and I miss them dreadfully. But never have I missed him more than a few weeks ago . when the man who defeated Don Strauss for the Newport Beach City Council and is now the mayor of that city resorted to a tactic Don Strauss abhorred. ln a letter to the Pilot, the mayor used a patronizing treatise on the Pledge of Allegiance as a vehicle to question my patrio- tism, character and God knows what else. All this was puzzling since I have made no direct ref- erence to him in this colwnn. I can only asswne that he is . angry at me because I suggested • that his wife might elevate the debate if she refrained from name-calling in espousing her views on abortion. After my original irritation at his letter, I decided to ignore it - which, I suspect, is still the best course. I have no need or desire to defend either my patriotism or character to the mayor, nor to attack his. I probably would have continued to ignore it had not this week's column gone unex· pectedly down the tubes. I had planned to visit the Mer- ., . maid and count the girls, as I promised, surely an appropriate assigrµnent for a #degraded per- son· which is how -among other . things -the mayor described me. But the Pilot's Evan Henerson scooped me on the Mennaid. I ··don't think I'd have the same rel}d . on it that he did, but I will have to . allow a llttle time before I tackle this socially important issue. So let's tackle another socially important issue: the mayor's let- ter. Why important? Because it cuts to the heart of one of the most distressing trends in our . society: the steady decline of civility in dealing with cWfering . views on public issues. The people who challenged por- tions of the Pledge of Allegiance as not reflecting what is taking place in this cquntry today were simply exercising the kind of healthy skep· tici.sm that is a vital ingredient in any democratic society. · Pulitzer Prize-winning astronomer earl Sagan said it pretty well the other day when he told cin interviewer that the conse- quence of not learning the scien- tific method -which includes healthy skepticism that leads to tough, pertinent questions and a demand for evidence before we commit to belief -"leads us into serious danger as a nation." Th.is skepticism is certainly an issue that can be debated and oq.e I would welcome. But instead of writing to that point, the mayor chose to lecture us on the Pledge with a string of patri- otic homilies that could be dis- cussed here individually from an historical viewpoint to no partic- ularly useful end. To take one example, I sus- pect the founders of this nation spun in their graves when the phrase #under God" was added to th~ Pledge. Most of them were either deists or Unitarians who believed in some sort of imper- sonal Providence but were dubi- ous or downright hostile about the relevance of the Bible. Example: James Madison wrote: "Religious bondage shackles and debilitates the mind and unfits it for every noble enterprise.· · But our subject today is the importance of civility in debating public issues, and there can be no better illustration than a . lengthy defense of Wendy Leece's views that appeared on the same page as the mayor's letter. After 20 minutes of discussion, the board emerged from behind closed doors to announce their 6-0 decision, and reswned the regular board meeting. Covert said he recommended the board approve the voluntary reso- lution plan instead of fighting the U.S. Department of Education in lengthy litigation. "I thought it was a very balanced proposition,• he said. Adams parent Lloyd Bennett, who advocated the original bound- ary change, said he was not sur- prised by the board's decision. Bennett said he believes the JoAnn students are prevented from participating in after-school activi- ties because they are bussed instead of attending Wilson, which is closer to their homes. But the civil rights office's invesb· gation was triggered last year by a complaint, wtuch alleged the dls- trict altered the Adams and Wilson school boundaries based on raoal and ethnic considerations. The change cut out portions of a JoAnn Street neighborhood, wtuch is predominantlyi.atino, prompl:lng some community members to denounce the adjustment as raast. "I still think. it's something that we may want to consider in the future," Monahan said Tuesday. Stokes took the Q & A session, in good humor. He also discuss~d his work with charities and hospi- tals and stressed the importance of attending college as a means of achieving athletic success. • "I couldn't have played football · at UCLA if 1 didn't have the grades," Stokes said. By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA - It took just 78 minutes and one unearned run Tuesday to halt the remarkable three-year ascent of the Costa Mesa High baseball program. The Mustangs, 3-22, 0-15 in the Pacific Coast League when this year's seniors were freshmen, gave 1994 CIF Southern Section Division Ill run- ner-up and host Santa Margarita all it could handle, before falling, 1-0, in a Division m Wild Card game dominat- ed by pitchers. "Starns was awesome," said Broe- samle of the ace right-hander, who no-hit the Eagles for 4 2/3 innings. Starns, who threw 48 of his 68 pitch-. es for strikes, yielded just two hits and no walks, striking out five. He was, however, denied his 14th victory in two seasons, a span in which he's notched nearly hall of the Mustangs' 28 triumphs. •starrts deserved better than what he got,· said Mesa Coach Doug Deats, who praised his players, cred- ited Santa Margarita, and lamented a handful of Mustang breakdowns on offense and defense. The most costly Mesa miscue came in the second inning, when Erle Brown's leadoff can of com to center field was misplayed for a two-base error. Matt Strickroth advanced Brown to third on a groundout to second baseman Layne DeTemple, before Randell Shelley's sacrifice fly to right plated the game's only run. Mesa, which managed just one hit in last spring's 3-0 CIF first-round playoff loss at Irvine, put three run- ners aboard in the second and sev- enth innings, only to be denied. The visitors left five runners on base. Broesamle led off the second with a rocket up the middle, but he was erased at second on a botched hit- and-run. 4 Julius Vasquez followed with "tl walk and, after one of Eagle startm · John Morgan's five strikeou&k, advanced to second on Halverso~s bunt single. .. Broesamle was stranded at seco#J after a one-out double in the fourth and Halverson nearly scored tEe tying run in the fifth after singll4, being sacrificed to second, then m<f- ing to third on Tony Arevalos' flyOJt to right. ,, Freshman Brian Montoya, playia'g for junior leadoff man Ray Ohrel, w.fto sat out for breaking team rules, fol- lowed with a high bounder to short, but was nailed at first on a bang·baJlg play to protect Morgan's shutout. , Senior Craig Harrison reliev~d Morgan to start the sixth and worked a perfect inning, before Mesa threat- ened in the seventh. Vasquez sparked an eruption from the sizable Costa Mesa crowd with a rope into left field to start u;ie frame. A sacrifice bunt attempt was turned into a force out at second, but an error on Halverson's hot shot to third put runners at first and second with one out: A 4-6-3 double play, however. ended the contest, as well .as the prep careers of a senior ciass for which Deats reserved special praise. . "Those guys have been with me all three years and they've set the tone for this program,." Deats sajd. "They've done a lot to elevate a pPO- gram that was probably the worst 'in Orange County wheli I took over. Every class that comes through this school from now on will be trying <to emulate what thf:se kids did by post- ing two second-place finishes .in league. They'll be' missed, but not for- gotten." Indeed, this team helped Mesa make its first playoff appearance in 14 years last spring, and became the first Mustang contingent since 1961· 62 to play in back-to-back postsea- sons. The 15-10 finish left the Mus· tangs one win shy of tying the school single-season record and improved upon last year's 13-12 mark. •1t•s disappointing that it's over, but we've had a lot of fun," Broesam- le said. Sea Kings respond with 13-5 victory over Esperanza in first round play. By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot NEWPORT BEACH -Before Corona del Mar High celebrated with its smash- ing victory over Esperanza in the first round of the ClP Southern Section Divi· s1on I boys tennis playoffs, it received some crippling news about one of its top players.., junior Boris Turkich. , Turkich, an exchange student from Croatia who went 43-2 ln singles, 23-1 in the Se4 View League, will miss the play- offs because of a back injury. By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot CORONA DEL MAR -The cliche -no guts, no glory -isn't always true, as Corona del Mar Higl1 verified Tuesday night. Heart and soul only counted •for a grueling, five-game loss against (let's face it) a more tal- ented Capistrano Vall~y team. The Sea Kings left their hearts on the1floor. • "Regardless of the outcome, our guys played with a lot of heart, and as far as I'm concerned, they're all going home winners, H said CdM boys volleyball coach Steve Conti, whose unseeded squad (10-6) came back from near defeat in the third game to ta1ce a 2-1 edge in games, before drop- ping a virtual three-hour match against the second-seeded Cougars, 8-15, 15-7, 12-15, 15-12, 15-9, in the second round of the CIF Southern Sectiort Division I Playoffs. •I think we got a little tired toward the end," Conti said. "(The Cougars) seemed to be more fresh, and that's a great team. ·1 don't trunk there was much : WEDNESDAY, MAY 15, 1996 in five more we could've done. They did an exceptional job. We definitely didn't lose it; that team earned it.• Capistrano Valley (17-1), champion of the South Coast League, was led by Balboa Bay -Club Volleyball Club standout Ryan Thurlow (25 kills), Mike Tulley (20) and Brad Leach (17). ·We really wanted to beat (CdM), because we talk about playing each other on our club . team," said Thurlow, who pl4yed against many of his BBC Volley- ball Club teammates. •Jt's really personal -you don't want to lose to them." John Coon, a senior, led the Sea Kings with 31 kills and 16 digs, while Brian Coleman, CdM's 6-foot-4 outside hitter, recorded 30 kills thanks to the crafty passing of AD-Sea View League setter Derek .Newcomer (career-high 82 assists). Newcom- er also had 14 digs. Blclir Hoppe added 14 kills for CdM, ·while freshman Dennis Alshuler had 11 . The Sea Kings, thinking upset, showed the kind of character in the third game that propelled them to a second-place finish in the Sea View League, coming back from a 12-6 defiat to win, rolling off nine unanswered points. Thurlow's tap at the net landed wide, tying the game, 12-12, then Coleman nailed home back.-to- back scoring kills to give CdM a 14-12 edge. Following an excha.nge of sideouts Alshuler's solo block on Matt Aronson ga~e the Sea Kings their sideout for another game-point opportunity -CdM capped its stunning comeback when Hop99 blocked Thurlow's kill from the back row. Cd.M's fans gave the Sea Kings a standing ovation, when Capo Valley called timeout at 12-12. Throughout the match, the CdM fans cheered hard and loud, especially for Coon. hollering C- 0 -0 -0 -0 -0 -0 -0-N after each kill. But Capo Valley began doing to Cd.M what the Sea Kings had . done to the Congars in the first and third games -r block and dig. Beau Rawi, in fact, had &be solo blocks in the fourth game, as the Cougars tied it. · In the fowth game, after Thur- low's return landed in the net for a CdM point to tie it, 9-9, the Cougars caught fire behind Thur- low's jump serving and Rawi's blocking. They tpok a 13-9 edge. Coon and Coleman got the See Kings to within 13-12, but, fitting- ly, it ended on a pair of blocks by Rawi. Cd.M never led in the fifth game, trailing 6-2 before pulling to within 7-6. The Cougars went ahead, 13-6, after an ace by Thur- low, but a sideout, two kills by Coon and an ace by Hoppe got the Sea Kings dose, 13-9. But they never got closer. Byrne signs with Idaho MOSCOW, Idaho -Former Estancia High basketball stand- out Kevin Byrne, who played last season at North Idaho Communi- ty College, has signed a letter of intent to play next season at the University of Idaho. Byrne, a 6-foot-9 forward, was a second-team All-CIF Southern Section Division m selection as a 6-8 post player for Coach Tim Parsel's 1994-95 Eagles, whom he helped lead to a 25-4 record, a Pacific Coast League title and a berth in the CIF m-AA semifinals. The PCL coaches' Co-Most Valuable Player as a senior, Byrne averaged 10.5 points and 5.2 reboupds and shot 60% from the field in the balanced Estancia attack. Last season, Byrne averaged 6.7 points and 5.5 rebounds and shot 61 % from the field and 70% from the foul line for Northern Idaho Coach Rollie Williams. w (Williams) h45 had a lot of great inside players iii his pro- gram.-and he believes {Byrne) could be another one of those,• said newly-hired Idaho Coach Kermit Davis. •He has three years left to play and he's a great stu- dent."
