I don't recall why the idea was shelved, but it was, most likely because other alternatives eventually won out. Presently two of the trustee~"' · apparently have the same idea, Ed Decker and former Costa Mesa High athlete (and standout) Jim Ferryman. There's no question, it stirs · the imagination, at least in the sense of athletics, and so forth:- Would they change the col~ to red, green and white? Would~ it be a Pegasus? Would they really kiss oft the finest gym , ... (and girls gym) in the district .,_ and make it the junior higb's facility at Estancia? · , Would Estancia, and it's vast area be the answer for seventh and eighth graders, while Costa Mesa, the lesser campus in virtually every respect, house grades 9-12? There's no question a single school would obviously compete very well within the scope of the Pacific Coast League. Would the new school immediately join up with Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor in the Sea View League? Then of course, there's staff to think about. Hmmm. What would I do? First, of course, I would turn Costa Mesa into the intermediate school and save Estancia for the high school students. You 've gotta have athletic directors, for starters, so Dr. Jerry Howell would stay at the Mesa " campus and be the junior high • athletic director for boys and girls. With the win of B division, Hogan and Porter, both juniors, ha.ve now catapulted to the top of the recruibnent list for college sailing. The conditions were typical of the Mid Atlantic in the spring - very, very windy. Ac;tamson finished with a 2, 1 for day. with Lovell posting an 11, 10. Overall, Adamson's finishes were 2,3, dq, 1, 4, 4, 6, 8, 1, 2, 1. Adamson's amazing consistency throughout the series not only gave him the win, but puts him in a position to be a medal contender. Ranked 11th in the Laser class world rankings, Adamson is the top-ranked . American and has been over the past year. Besides his consistency, Ad<lUlSon's wind downwind gave him a distinct advantage over the rest of the fleet at the Trials. No matter where he seemed to start, he was able to grind through the fleet, often coming from the '30s and moving into the Top 10 in just one leg. Rare in the Laser class, Adamson does not use much heel in his downwind sailing, but rather keeps the ~t pretty much flat. As noted by fellow competitor and Laser class president Ian Lineberger about Adamson. MI would venture to say there aren't five sailors in the world capable of sailing that fast on a run.• . Newman admits she misses her Back Bay training partner, Sue Davis of Newport Beach. Davis, who works for the City of Newport Beach, feels the same way. Over the yt!a.rs, they have traveled all around the world to several duathlon events (nmning and cycling. without the swimming). Davis finished ninth overall, and fourth in her age group (30-35), at last year's World Duathlon Championships. She's currently concentrating on her cycling in preparation for a Masters Division Cycling event (JO-and-over) in June. •I'm kind of bummed losing my training partner,• Davis said. "but I think this is her way to race professionally. Maybe she can get some sponsorship. I'm happy for her." I I I ( ' I I ' ' I I I I' I I I', \ ' I I ' ' I i I I I I '. I I I\ ' JWvln 9IMit.
