COSTA .MESA -Jean Duke
had a puzzled look on her face
Monday as she paced back and
forth in front of the familiar
Hilgren Square stationery store
where she has shopped for nearly
30 years.
Eventually, two small sheets of
notebook paper taped to the win-
dow of Costa Mesa Stationers and
Office Supply caught her eye.
The handwritten notes put it
simply: •Went out of business.·
#Did not relocate.•
After 45 years, the family-
owned stationery store closed
June 1 because of increasing
competition from large office-sup-
ply stores and grocery and drug
stores selling paper products.

said. M Neighborhood stores

corrected herself: ·Always were

Instead of struggling to keep afloat in a

After six rounds of chemotherapy, three

Eastbluff crossing
guard, speed
control necessary
l.ocals offer their thoughts on traffic
$afety near Corona de/ Mar High School
after 12-year-old boy was hit by car.
I strongly recommend a crossing guard
and have been strongly recommending
that for 14 years ("Boy, 12, hit in Eastbluff
crosswalk,• June 19).
This accident that happened to that little
boy was inevitable. I am just grateful he
iiurvived. Something has to be done.
It is a little disappointing that it takes an
accident for people to listen.
SUSAN LAIRD
Newport Beach
In many other states, a school zone is 15
rOph and is strictly enforced.
Flashing lights, waves of Bott dots alert
the driver to slow down and pay attention.
The accident last week is inexcusable.
The city has known of the traffic issues for
far too long and have turned a blind eye. It
was inevitable this would happen. The
sheer number of drivers who are reckless
combined with the volume of walking stu-
dents predicates accidents like this.
Is anyone listening now? Unfortunately,
1l has nearly cost this young boy his life and
will cost the citizens of Newport, with the
anticipated lawsuit for ·something that
should have been handled decisively years
ago.
I've also seen speed bumps installed in
sehool zones and crosswalks guarded by
U,.e senior citizens coalition. Seniors for
Safety was a program I recall reading about
in Las Vegas. Seniors were held up by the
community they served as true heroes for
their dedication and commitment to safety
of schoolchildren in Las Vegas.
Lastly, the reason why the 15 mph zones
work so well in other states is a function of
driver education and strict enforcement.
Nailing drivers with a stiff penalty -high
fines and crossing-guard duty -will curb
excessive speeds and teach a few lessons
along the way.
CARL OSSIPOFF
Newport Beach
First of all, stop and smell the roses. Put
the stop signs in a month before school
starts so that people get used to stopping.
Then get the crossing guard, and I'm sure
parents and grandparents would be glad to
pay a dollar a student to pay for the cross-
ing guard, and the city surely should.

HARMLESS PRANK?

Boys should be expelled
The Issue: Many say
the punishment isn"t too
severe for pair who set off
firecrackers at Corona del
Mat". High School.
I definitely think these kids
who set off the firecrackers
should be expelled (•Boys face
expulsion,• June 20).
Firecrackers are against the
law. Even if they were not, they
are only legal in the city in
which they are sold, and fhey
do not sell fireworks in Corona
del Mar or Newport Beach.
These kids are just getting away
with all kinds of stuff.
So yeah, they broke the law,
and they broke the law on cam-
pus.
SHARON VAN ALSTINE Costa Mesa
Is anybody else out there get-
ting tired of seeing these young

and get off scot-free? I am.
By the way, that screeching
sound you hear is David

Chasing the ambulance and
going as fast as he can to Coro-

GEORGE LAMPINEN
Newport Beach
Our media regularly brings
us the news of high-profile fig-
ures committing crimes -a
couple of professional athletes
come to mind; teenagers dri-
ving too fast, killing and injur-
ing passengers; even the aver-
age citizen making the front
page of a local paper for sneak-
ing into a major sporting event.
The interesilng fact is that
these criminals suffer liffie or no
visible consequences, and that
sends out the wrong message to
society. What troubles me the
most ls our childlen, who are
fo~ ideas about good Judg-
ment, moral character, and the
positive or negative conse-
quences for their behavior, are
sent the wrong message.
If we hypothetically turned the
Corona del Mar High School
firecracker fiasco around, what
would have occurred -beyond
the obvious -if the M-80
exploded in a student's hand
while attempting to ignite it? Is it
possible the people directly
responsible for their child's
behavior would cry foul and hire
high-priced attorneys to prove
the school's negligence?
Or how about this: What if it
was a pipe bomb? Not a big
one but one equivalent to the .
power of one-quarter stick of
dynamite -one Just big
enough to make a lot of noise.
If that was the case, do you
think anyone woulaeven ques-
tion an expulsion decision?
As far as I'm concerned, a
dangerous explosive device of
any construction does not
belong on campus, and the con-
sequences need to be swift and
permanent. Expel them. Get the
r. . . '
message across that behavior
such as this is unacceptable, and
zero tolerance m the schools is
just that -no tolerance for
inappropriate, dangerous, or
life-threatening behavior.
DAVID SINGER

I don't believe there has ever
been a year that there hasn't
been some little prank done at
the campus or any school, as in
beach balls being floated across
the crowds or squirt guns or rolls
of toilet paper or cans of
whipped cream.
While these are very inno-
cent, the firecrackers didn't harm
anybody. They weren't around
anybody, they just went off. It
wu a pr~~ It was-a ~of the-
graduation ceremony. ·Let the
kids be kids. No one got hurt.
They didn't do it around any-
body. I don't think the boys
should be expelled -maybe
some time out, out that's about it.

He was one of the happiest

Pinch one: He checked into

Pinch two: Balboa was wide

Pinch four: Finding a bread-

passed out bread to passers-by

While doing all this, he was
able to remain beautifully drunk
by tossing down a few immedi-

sport utility vehicle in Costa Mesa

stepson, police said.
The cyclist had no identifica-

On Monday, police circulated a

The stepson, who was not iden-

Ramirez, who suffered severe
internal injuries, remains in criti-

Costa Mesa man held

A Costa Mesa man was an~t
ed early Monday in connection
with a daring auto theft over the
weekend, authorities said.
Donn Henry Llndekugel, 38,
was booked on suspicion of grand
theft auto. Bail was set at $25,000.
Police said Llndekugel was
using a pay telephone in front of a
liquor store in the 2200 block of
Newport Boulevard when a car
driven by Patricia Guyette; 46, of
Costa Mesa pulled into the drive-
way a t 4:10 p.m. Sunday.
G uyette reportedJy left the
keys in the ignition of her 1989
Chrysler LeBaron convertible and
went to buy a pack of cigarettes.
When she saw a man climb in the
car and start it, she waved at him
in Superior Court, but attorneys
refused to release any details
Monday.
The order was submitted Fri-
day -the same day the civil tri-
al was scheduled to begin -by
Elizabeth Lopez, who represents
two former yacht dub waitress-
es.
Neither Lopez nor the yacht
Club's attorney, Michael Baker,
would verify a settlement had
been reached. But in most civil
cases, a suit is dropped if the
I
plaintiff decides to discontinue
the legal process or if a deal is
struck.
Although Lopez would not say
whether a settlement offer was on
1he-table, she indicated hercllents
-Linda Gionet and Joanna
Faunce -had planned to pro-
ceed with the trial.
Gionet and Faunce claimed co-
worker Aaron Griffel made
numerous lewd comments and
sexual advances toward them in
1996.
In the civil suit, Gnf:fel Wei l
accused of JD4king sexual ges-l
tutes and grabbing the women ,
without their consent. The
women added that the club was
alerted to Grtff el's actions, but
didn't aggressively investigate ,
the matter. s
Faunce filed a complaint with ,
the state Department of Pair ,
Employment and Housing-in
December 1996. The two women '
reportedly left the dub a month

She circled the vehicle and
tried to open the passenger door,
clinging to the side of the car as
the man tried to speed away.
Guyette was thrown to the
rear of the car and fell to the
ground, suffering minor injuries
to her head and shoulders. She
was treated at the scene and
released.
Anaheim police said they
found Llndekugel at 12:15 a.m.
Monday near Santa Ana Canyon

Costa Mesa police Lt. Ron

SURVIVOR
CONTINUED FROM 1
"I'm back to shooting and
passing," Drew said . ·we are
very competitive, so none of the
guys are ta.king it easy on me.
They kind of tease me, but it's a
motivational thing."
Drew still needs to regain his
endurance and has problems
re membering conve.:sations, but
he battled cancer on sheer deter-
mination and heart, his family
and friends say.
As~istant water polo coach Les
Ct-1tler said he was stunned when
his player made an early predic-
tion in November.
•He told me he would be
back," Cutler said. "I was
shocked because there we re
some of us who didn't think he
would make it. -
"It's a tremendous feeling to see
him back knowing a few months
ago his chance to get back into
water polo was probably nil.·
COACHES NOTICED HE
WAS LETHARGIC. SLOW
Drew is a walking medical dic-
tionary. Have him talk about
medical procedures and dosages,
and the terminology rolls off his
tongue. Several months ago he
couldn't tell aspirin from Prozac.
"I have a vast knowledge of
stuff 1 never want to know about
again/ Drew said, laughing.
The pain began in October
when coaches noticed Drew was
lethargic and slow. He missed
most of the games and doctors
believed he had hepatitis because
his skin was yellow.
After being bounced around to
various emergency rooms, an
ultrasound cliscovered that Drew
had a grapefruit-sized twnor rest-
ing on his bile duct.
Drew's father, Lynn, said the
tumor weighed about 10 pounds.
Within 36 hours, the tumor was
removed and Drew would be
bedridden for Thanksgiving and
his 16th birthday.
He made it home for thrist-
mas, but there weren't too many
smiles. Drew knew what lay
ahead and he had to prepare him-
self for the pain.
Chemotherapy began and
Drew's 6-foot-3-inch athletic
frame was reduced to 112 pounds
at one point. Drew was overcome
with emotions -disbelief, derual
and anger.
How could this happen to
someone so young?
"The chemo had me really
sick,• Drew said. "I was low, low-
er and at the lowest point of my
We. It doesn't matter how much
reassurance someone gives you,
you have to have the mind-set
that you will get through this."
Drew's body was pumped full
of medication, causing him to hal-
lucinate and have severe mood
swings. On rlillerent clays, he
kicked Santa Claus and a couple
of Anaheim Ducks players out of
his room because he was loaded
on prescription drugs.
He even took out his rage on
his parents, who watched him
struggle to recover.
"He's crying and screaming
and then he starts swearing at
you,· his father said. "You don't
take it personally. You feel so help-
less that you can't do anything.·
Nobody could ease the excru-
ciating pain, but the corrunwtity
-as it had done so many times
before -rallied around Drew.
There were countless visits by
fnends and relatives, bringing
banners and warm wishes (or his

recovery. Drew has hundreds of
cards in a scrapbook and a
framed picture of Pepperd.ine
University's championship water
polo team.
In late January, Drew returned
home, where one of the rooms
was COJtVerted to a medical ward.
Anyone visiting him bad to wear
a mask because the slightest
cough or sneeze could land Drew
back in the hospital.
He requested a water bed so
when hit went to sleep he could
be closer to the water.
He started to grow stronger.
AFTER CHEMOTHERAPY, HE
FACES BIGGEST CHAUENGE
Hooked up to a protein drip,
Drew was near the end of his
chemo treatments and faced the
biggest challenge -remission.
Without eradicating the cancer,
the pain would continue and his
chances of living would diminish.
A black spot was found during
one of his medical office visits.
Scared, the fa.nii.J.y prayed. Anoth-
er abdominal surgery was per-
formed, removing several inches
. of Drew's small intestine.. _ _
•They did the surgery to be
safe," his father said. •u it had
been cancerous, it would have
meant another six months of
chemo."
Drew was a quiet warrior
throughout his fight, emerging
from the clouds of heavy medica-
tion and pain in March.
Eager to recapture the time he
lost. Drew began home-schooling
and plans to graduate wjth the
Class of 2000.
He attended tryouts for the
Newport Beech Ufegua.rd Cadet
program and finished 24th in a
field of 31, but the city only took
the top 20. He plans to help out
with the junior lifeguard program
by teaching younger kids.
Drew also has found time to
visit cancer patients at Cb:ildren's
Hospital of Orange County,
where he was hospitalized. He
recently visited a boy his age who
was diagnosed with leukemia
and who still is in a state of shock .
"Drew is the kind of person
who knows everybody and could
walk into a room of strangers and
in a couple of hours know all of
their names," said longtime
friend Cari Senor. "He has that
type of personality that could
hand.le something like this."
Drew will continue to undergo
monthly physicals and tests for
the next two years. His father said
the ·relapse" mileposts are one,
three and five years.
Drew's outlook is positive,
even under the threat of cancer.
He just achieved a teen milestone -
-obtaining his driver's license -
and the little things in life have
more resonance for him. But it's
where his heart lies -in the crys-
tal blue waters -that brought
him through the adversity.
"I'm loving it,•' he said . "Every
day is great to me. It brings you
closer to the ones who care about
you the most."

CdM girls add two more CIF

• Coach Mang felt aging
effects during and after
tennis team's marathon
CIF championship triumph.
By Barry Faulkner, Dally Piiot
CORONA DEL MAR -Before
the Corona del Mar High girls
tennis team could shave about
10 years off Coach Tim Mang's
appearance, it first had lo rob a
couple years from his life
expectancy. .
The fonner came m the Conn
of an agreement reached
between Mang and the CdM
~layers,..~o promised to dye his
silver hair brown and shave his
familicu mustache Lf they could
provide him the first CIF
Southern Section team title of his
distinguished 28-yedr coaching
career.
The latter was the loll
wrought by a four-hour, 11-7
title-match victory over six-time
defending ClF Division I
champion Peninsula, Nov. 24 al
the Clcuemonl
Club.
Mang,
however, wasn't
about to quibble
with figures after
his top-seeded
squad denied
Perunsula the
crown for the
first time in
that school's
seven-year existence.
"The girls wanted to dye it
themselves, but I wasn't about to
let that happen,• Mang said.
"So, before our bdnquet, 1 dyed
my own hair brown and shaved
the mustache myseU. The girls
said my hair wasn't dark
enough, so they vowed to take
matters into their own hands the
next time. But I got a lot of nice
comments from people who said
it made me look 10 years
younger.•
Mang's aging process,
however, was accelerated
considerably at the Claremont
Club, where junior Ruchika
Budhra1a did her best to prolong
the suspense -and, some
spectators might have said,
agony -with a 2112-bour
singles set against the Panthers'
Elizabeth Lee.
"(Budhraja) didn't want to
make any mistakes, so she was
being cautious,• Mang
explained of the often boring
baseline exchanges between the
two players. Some points were
clocked at more than 10
minutes, as the remaining
singles playe1s began to stiffen
and become impatient, unable to
continue their matches lintil
Budhraja-Lee produced a
winner.
•At one point, (CdM senior
singles standout Nina Vaughan)
came up and asked me if we
could just suspend their match
and continue it later, so we could
1lnish um rest of the singles
matches,• Mang recalled. •Even
Jan Ryan, one of our match
officials, spoke with me about
different possibilities. It got to a
point where we weren't sure just
what we were going to do. It
was sure a rare occurrence.•
Bu~aja, despite growing
increasingly 1elf-consclous over
ttle impatient groans of the
sizable and cw1ous aowd,
eventually prevailed to deadlock
the team score at 6-6.
"(Budhraja) was a little upset,
because she knew everyone was

NEWPORT BEACH -The fourth race
in Voyagers Yacht Club's historic Bogart
Series, raced June 13, was both breezy

club's vice commodore.
In winds exceeding 20 knots on rela-

Newport.
All the sailboats in the race completed
the near-50 mile race before Sunset.

The Bogart Series is a regatta consist-

The series was named after
Humphrey Bogart, a one-ti.me officer of
Voyagers Yacht Club, which was
founded in 1941, and an avid sailor and
racer.
The Series' perpetual trophy, retired
after Bogart won the series three times in

WESTMINSTER -Even with a
history of comebacks and a dugout
full of battlers, the Costa Mesa Amer-
ican Little League Major Division
White Sox couldn't prevent the first-
inning deficit accrued against the
Westminster Indians from giving their
season the deep six Monday in the
Disbict 62 Tournament of Champions
at Johnson School.
Three Mesa errors and some
explosive hitting helped settle things
early for the lndians, who put their
first five hitters on base and sent 10 to
the plate before the Wtute Sox could
retire the side.
Costa Mesa provided some stron~
defense of its own, mcluding a pair of
force plays from second baseman
Dylan Hunter to shortstop Nutter. But
the comeback wasn't to be.
"We've had shaky first innings
before, but we've come back,• White
Sox Manager Scott Hunter said.
"That's been a characteristic of this
team and I think our kids know that.•
Westminster startm9 pitcher Bnan
Nicalek belted a two-run homer, then
combined with two other hurlers to
blank the White Sox for the first l:tme
this year.
Casey Hutson (three innings) and
Jesse Felix followed Nicalek, as the
bio combined to ran nine Sox slug-
gers. And they were backed by error-
less defense.
"This is one of the best teams I've
had,· Scott Hunter said. "I've had
more talented teams, but these guys
had a lot of heart. They all wanted to
perform at 100% and that's what got
us here. Winning the Costa Mesa
championship (the White Sox defeat-
ed the Costa Mesa National Astros in
the tournament opener) was a big
accqmplishment. •
But despite pulling things together
defensively and riding the red-hot
rlght arm of reliever Josh Glauch, the
White Sox coulQ not find the magic
against this well-schooled bibe from
Westminster, which held on for a 6-0
victory to eliminate the locals.
