The days at California
School are very busy, especially
when getting ready for end of
the year testing.
The fifth graders have had
an exciting year as they pre-
pare to move into junior high
school. All of the fifth graders,
along with the fifth grades of
~everal other schools, went to
Arrow Head Ranch in late Feb-
ruary as part of outdoor science
school. There was a foot and a
half of snow on the ground
when the buses pulled into the
parking lot. Students had a
great time in the snow and hik-
ing on the mountain. An entire
school week was spent learning
about the environment.
Another recent field trip took
the ~th grade to the Youth
Expo at the Orange County
Fairgrounds. There they viewed
art from schools throughout the
county. In the classroom,
adding and subtracting mixed
numbered fractions is hard
work. The fifth grade needs this
math knowledge along with
multiplication and division to
get them through end of year
testing.
The smart fourth graders are
busy finishing their Mission
and Rancho reports. Out of the
classroom, they recently went
to the city of Irvine to visit the
Irvine Art Museum. It contains
many paintings of early Califor-
nia. Teacher Mrs. Courte,r said,
"It was excellent.•
The third graders just com-
pleted their library research
skills test. This will help them
in the future a~ they face tough
school work in later grades.
Thev are also ne~g the end
of their Indian reports. This
year's class is lucky to have a
student whose grand.father is a
pure Navaho Indian who will
visit their class to talk about his
tribe.
The second grade is spend-
ing a lot of time lately learning
about crocodiles. They have
been most interested to know
that these reptiles have teeth
sticking out of their mouth.

Additionally, never smile at a

are learning about peanuts -
how they are grown and their

class they are doing one-digit

Wong said, "It's hard, but going
very well."
The first grade is studying
insects, according to my sister
Caroline. They have mostly
learned: about ladybugs and
grasshoppers. The majority of
the students are only reading
books about these bugs and not
touching them. In math studies,
they are working on time and

COSTA MESA -A Shali-
mar-area property owners' asso-
ciation has just two weeks to
come up With the funds to repair
two alleys that parallel 18th and
James streets.
U the Shalimar, James and
18th Street Property Owners
Association fails to come up with
the cash, the city will take them
to court.
•Tuey (association members)
feel that with another two
weeks, they will be able to get
100% participation from the
owners," Mayor Joe Erickson
said Thursday. •From a city
standpoint, we've given them a
number of different deadlines,
and this will be the last one."
For years, the city has b~~m
after the owners to clean up
their properties and repair the
private alleys that run behind
their units. But the owners didn't
step into action until the city pro-
posed establishing an assess-
ment district, which would
require the council to declare
the alleys a public nuisance and
then take the owners to court to
cover the cost of repairs. Then,
the owners would be responsi-
ble for both construction and
legsU costs.
Earlier this month, the council
directed City Attorney Thomas
Kathe to move forward with the
legal proceedings. The council
decided to file suit against all the
property owners, and then settle
with the individuals who were
willing to contribute to the
repairs.
But the council had a change
of heart on Monday, after associ-
ation members showed the city
it had continued to gather sup-
port for the alley cleanup.

political process," LaPointe said.
HTo be kept out of the process

According to LaPointe, gay

country have been holding formal
reactions to the Tuesday ruling.
While it is known for its conserva-

a very active gay community.
·we have programs that make
us the envy of many communities,

association member Roger
Gooding told the council on
Monday.
Of the 40 property owners in
the area, all but five have agreed
to contribute to the effort. A cou-
ple of those properties are in
bankruptcy, and the association
hopes to persuade the bank to
fork over the necessary cash.

have to go through the legal
process of condemnation. If the
city did the work, we'd be lucky
if we could get it done by the
end of the year, but the property
owners could get it done in just a
matter of weeks."

Likewise, I'm quite certain I
don't want to know all the
details concerning my husband,
Jim's, recent Indian Guides
excursion to Catalina where he
and our 7-year old son, Nick,
joined some 120 other father-son
teams from what they call the
"Great Corona Nation" for a
two-night campout.
However, I must admit that
when I dropped Jim and Nick
off at the Balboa Pier last Friday
afternoon to catch the Catalina
Flyer, my curiosity was alarm-
ingly piqued.
There were throngs of dads
collecting on the dock. Giddy
with excitement, they engaged
themselves in the ancient Indian
rituals of, back-slapping, glad-
handing and joke-telling. One
father and son arrived by way of
that most venerated of tribal
transportation modes: the corpo-
rate limousine. ·
This gathering of the Great
Corona Nation looked more like
a photo shoot for an Eddie

oughly modem males balancing

I wondered if these fellas' knew
what they were getting into for
the weekend.
ln fact, could any of them
actually start a fire without
lighter fluid or skin a deer for
shelter if need be? I mean, any-
one besides Jim.
"What in th~ heck have you
got in there, Tony?" I asked one
of the dads dragging a surf-
board-sized duffle up the ramp.
Tony wiped his brow and said
in laughter and exasperation,
"EVERYTHING! H
Mounds of slick designer car-
ryalls were stacked up along the
loading dock. I knew that if I
had access to an ~-ray machine
I could easily sniff out a few lap-

shakers snuck in under the
guise of Essential Survival Gear.
Could these guys cut it m the

I gave Nie~ a hug and
reminded him to brush his teeth,

and to wear the green striped
shirt with the blue denim shorts.
Three days later, Nick got off
the boat wearing the exact same
clothes he had on when we said
good-bye. Add to that an addi-
tional varnish of inch-thick
gnme. The dads looked equally
gnzzled as they filed off the
boat with gear in hand and sons

from a successful buffalo score.
"Hey, Al," I called out to one
of the dads passing by my car,
"did you guys ever change your
underwear?"
Al threw his arms up into the
air and whooped with a grin,
"What underwear?"
Yeah, it was pretty obvious
that the tribes of the Great

of fun on their Big A9.venture

t.hey have?
That's the part I don't want to

"With the Honor Guard standing
at attention, the sentimental sound
of ... 'laps• filled the stillness as
Henry's wUe, Patty, and family sat
prpudly 1n the front row. The cere-
mony was an impressive tribute of
respect for the 5-year department
veteran and for those who sacri-
ficed their lives before him.
The ceremony was attended by
a n umber of law enforcement offi-
ciAls, including Orange County
Sheriff Brad Gates, District Attor-
ney Mike Capizzi, and three coun-
ty supervisors who proclaimed
~y 23 as "PoJlce Memorial Day"
to commend a1I police officers in
Orange County for their service.
The Newport Harbor High
School band also participated.
Newport Beach Police Chief
Robert McDonell' gave a speech
commemorating Henry -an honor
that carried with it "too high a
prlce," McDonell said.
"Officer Bob Henry was ta.ken
from the family who loved him so
much, from his children who
deserved to know him much better
KORANDO
CONTINUED FROM 1
"It was a real difficult decision
for me,• said Korando, who sub-
mitted his resignation from the
Planning Commission on Wednes.-
day, the day after he was appoint-
ed to the water board.
"I want to be in charge of my
own destiny. And I thought I could
offer something different and new
to the water district."
Mesa Consolidated has been
swimming in a sea of controversy
for more than a year, with sexual
harassment complaints, questions
about the structural efficiency of its
and have him be a part of their
lives, and from his friends and co-
workers who treasured him for his
warmth and friendship,•
McDonell said.
"He was known by many as
someone with the heart of a lion,
and his struggle for life typified
that desaiption."
Henry was shot in the pre-
dawn hours of March 12, 1995, in
front of Newport Harbor Lutheran
Church. The bullet plunged the
30-yeat-old officer into a coma and
he died from the wounds a month
later. Authorities determined that
a struggle took place between
Henry and Carlos Caicedo, a dis-
traught and intoxicated 24-yea,r.
old Garden Grove man who shot
Henry, then fatally shot himself.
McDonell also recognized the
other slain officers #who have giv-
en the best part of their life before
they died, fulfilling their promise
to faithfully serve the communities
they were sworn to protect."
Among those was the most recent,
Brea police Detective Terry Lee
Fincher, 48, who was killed by a
train Wednesday while on duty.
The Newport Beach chief was
among many who traveled last
week to memorial services in
Washington, D.C., and Sacramen-
new 18-milliori gallon reservoir
and the loss of millions of dollars
worth of rare fossils. And that only
names a few of the problems the
agency has faced.
"That's actually what caught my
attention,• Korando said. "I think
with my experience attending the
board meetings and my knowl-
edge of the public's concerns about
improprieties with the Brown Act
and about unprofessionalism, I
would hope that I can help to
improve that image and restore
some of the community's confi-
dence in the water board.•
Th.is could end up being a short
gig for Korando. Durante, his pre-
decessor, would have been up for
re-election in November. Now, it
to that recognized Henry and the
174' officers DAtionwide who loll
their lives in the line cX duty last
year.
The pain of this loss for the offi·
cers' loved 0?¥5 never goes away,
even with tim~ McDonell said
•A police officer's family is" a
very special one," he said. "It
takes a great deal of courage to
say goOd-bye each day, knowing
what'uncertalnty lies ahead. Not
so much for the officers, because
they're off doing something
they've chosen to do ... it is the
families who must await their
return."
And in 174 cases, the families'
worst fear "that they keep locked
up in a very private place inside
the~. came true," he said. The
officers' families and children are
the officers' legacy -and in Hen-
ry's case, he left behind three
young children, Bobby, 6, Jenna, 3,
and Alissa, 1, the chief noted.
"Bob Henry cµid bis fellow offi-
cers listed on that memorial have
most certainly earned their special
place with God," McDonell said.
·Please give their families and
those of us who must cany on
without them, some measure of
courage and strength which was
so much a part of their lives."
will be Korando in the ring.
"I'm not overly concerned with
the election," said Korando, who
failed to win a bid for the <;::ity
Council in 1994. "It's going to be
the people's choice as to whether
I've done a good job."
And, Korando said, he's throw-
ing all his energy into familiarizing
himself with the district's policies.
"It's going to be a real challenge
for me to change from a role where
I didn't have any policy-ma.king
responsibilities to all of a sudden
gaining that role, where there's
very broad-reaching policies that
not only have to be made to deal
with immediate situations, but also
the future," Korando said. •It's a
big responsibility.

It's just one more step toward

Since an executtve committee

HIGH SCHOOL BOYS TENNIS
• A
Double play snuffs out Sea Kings, __ 10-8/~·
CORONA DEL MAR -While the
post-match discussion with Corona del
Mar High boyS' tennis coach TI.m Mang
included spirit and teamwork (or lack
thereof), the defeat of the Sea Kings siln-
ply came down to the factors on the
court, specifically in doubles.
Second-seeded Peninsula (21-1 ),
which beat the Sea Kings earlier this
season in a nonleague match, won sev-
en of nine doubles sets -including two
of three in a pulsating third round -to
defeat host Corona del Mar, 10-8, in the
semifinals of the CIF Southern Section
Division I Playoffs Thursday and
advance to Wednesday's championship
match against eight-time defending
champion Santa Barbara.
~we knew what we had to do to win,
and (the Sea Kings) knew what they had
to do to stop us -we had to dominate in
doubles," Peninsula co-head coach Tom
Cox said.
Following a tie in the first round, 3-3,
Peninsula's Maurice Yu and Kyle Ras-
mussen (No. 2 doubles) put the Panthers
ahead, 7-5, with a 6-3 victory over
Cd.M's John Cappello and Raj Shukla to
end the second round.
• With the proverbial bases loaded, Corona del Mar strikes out
against Peninsula in CIF Division I Semifinals; Panthers strike
hard in doubles with 7-2 edge in that deparbnent to qualify for a
shot at Santa Barbara in next week's championship finals.
By Richard Dunn, Daily Pilot
going on, the Panthers held an 8-7 lead.
The match was tied, 62-62, in games,
before Peninsula's No. 1 team of Dave
Gliberman-Nick Henry beat Cappello
and Shukla, 6-0, to go up, 9-7, and clinch
at least a tie.
CdM, seeded third, needed to win its
final two doubles sets. At the time,
CdM's Greg Coleman and Sameer
Chopra led, 5-0, against Peninsula's
third doubles, while Cd.M's Reza
Jahangiri and Drew Fuller were locked
up in a 3-3 set with Yu and Rasmussen.
Yu-Rasmussen won three straight
games, giving Peninsula its 10th set and
clinching the victory.
Coleman-Chopra held on for a 6-?·
win, but it was too little too late.
Our No. 2 team (Jahangiri and Fuller)
almost pulled it off for us; Drew figured
out what team is all about."
While the cheers from the crowd
were louder for Peninsula than for the
Sea Kings (19·3), freshman sensation
Taylor Dent and junior Boris Turkich
kept CdM alive at Nos. 1 and 2 singles.
Dent swept, finishing four rounds of
the playoffs with a record of 72-8 in
games. He also avenged an earlier loss
this year to Tim Marsh, blanking Penin-
sula's second-best player, 6-0.
"I guess my first (win over Dent) was
a fluke,• said Marsh, referring to the
March 19 nonleague match, when host
Peninsula beat CdM, 10-8.
Turkich, wearing a back brace to
safeguard an injury. also swept, playing
singles for the first time in the playoffs.

NEWPORT BEACH -TeWin-

ble-checking the figures twice as
the announcement was being
made that her 1Iojan squad had
won the girls track and field title
at the two-day Newport-Mesa
District junior high school cham-
pionships that ended Thursday.
Who could blame her7
Last year, TeWmkle was
announced as the winner, but
upon further review, Ensign
Intermediate was found to be the
actual winner.
"Last year they gave out the
plaques and everything and then
we had to give them back," Gib-
son said. "It was pretty hard to
do. The girls were so disappoint-
ed."
Th.is time around, TeWinkle
didn't leave anything to chance,
outscoring Ensign, 216-183. The
celebratory bottle of water
poured on Gibson's head W'>S the
final confirmation as the team
broke into a cheer around their
coach at the scorer's table.
Although the figures did change
from those announced at the
close of the meet. Originally,
TeWinkle was credited with a
199-163.
"I really hated calllng you with
this one," Gibson said of letting
the Dally Pllot know of the
changes. •My heart sank there
for a few minutes. but at lease
there were no changes in the
placing of any of the teams.•
Third-place Corona del · Mar
actually finished just one point
back at 182, followed by Costa
Mesa (102), Dwyer (86) and Har-
bor Day (65).
The TeWinkle C Division and
eighth grade squads were the big
winners, carrying the Trojans to
the overall title. Corona del Mar,
behind the record-setting perfor·
mance of Jaycee Mahler, broke
through in the seventh-grade
division posting a 97-50 edge
over Ensign.
