seven-hour standoff Friday.

COSTA· MESA -Robbery suspect
Michael Ralph Wofford, who evaded arrest
after a seven-hour standoff with Costa
Mesa police Friday, is still on ~e loose and
conside~ armed and dangerous, police
said.
Wofford, 37, is wanted in connection
with two bwglaries and an armed robbery
in San Bernardino County, police said.
Police have also been
investigating Wofford in
connection with resi-
dential burglaries in
Costa Mesa, police said.
Although the Canyon
Drive apartment where
police believed Wofford
had been hiding Friday
was surrounded by an
10-member special
weapons and tactics Michael
team with guns drawn, ur u d
floodlights and a public "0 or
address system, be
managed to leave the apartment without
police notice.
•Somehow he gof out of the perimeter,"
said Sgt Darell Freeman. "It was verified
that be was in the apartment when the
standoff started.•
Police had received a tip Friday after-
noon that Wofford of Victorville and his
girliriend, Sundee Aires Waterman of
Apple Valley were in the apMtrnent, 2195
Canyon Drive, Apt. A.
Waterman surre ndered when police
arrived Friday. She told police she believed
that Wofford was coming out behind her,
but he never did.
Wa&erman was booked in Orange Coun-
ty Jail on suspicion of possession of stolen
property.
Unsure if Wofford bad any hostages or
weapons with tum in the. apartment, the
special weapons and tactics. team sur-
rounded the apartment with weapons
drawn for several hours as neighbors
watched.
Police said Friday they wanted to make
swe Wofford knew that they •weren't
going away. "They didn't. But sometime
during the standoff, Wofford apparently
did.
Police ended the standoff around mid-
night Friday and entered the apartment
but didn't find the suspect.
"We don't know when be got out,• Free-
man said. "He's out and about and still in
the area and he's considered armed and
dangerous.·
Police later received tips indicating
Wooford may have left the area.

The bright-red and smiley-

states. The chain sells more than
60 million hot dogs a year.
And because every Wienie

tomers are invited to complete
an entry form to •wm a New

At the end of July, one lucky

COSTA MESA -A dispute
with city parks officials bas
prompted some members of
Rel.eat Costa Mesa to seriously
consider disbanding. the volun-
teer group, which has planted
1,400 trees since 1993.
Joe Bogart, Costa Mesa's
senior supervisor of parkways,
criticized the group in a recent
memo for its handling of an East
Side tree planting March 16.
Although the group intended
to plant 71 trees, it ended up
planting only 44 because of what
it said was a lack of support from
the oty.
Because Rel.eat is a volunteer
organization, the city's criticism
was particularly painful, said Liz
Meyer, the group's president. .
"The board is really upset,•
she said. ·1 feel we don't have the
backing we need. There is a very

--&sa cross cowitry ov..ercarne adversity to reign supreme at state finals.
llQ:any Faulkner, Daily Pilot
..;,..cOSTA MESA -Switchbacks is a cross
:cQpntry term used to describe a course's
ilSnh change of direction. But it could also
iDe easily applied to the emotional twists
ind turns endured by Costa Mesa High
Ql$ coach Joe Susi's talented team last
.mJl.
, however, as Busi later said , it was a
r-coaster season, the Mustangs timed ~ cllrnb to the top with masterful preci-
£Son.
]'hat final ascent included three person-
J"eCOrd times out of five scoring runners
Fresno's Woodward Park, which enabled
:the Mustangs to enjoy the breathtaking
from atop all statewide Division fV
~petition.
Senior Gegi Van De Walker carried the pace for the first third of the 5,000-meter
course, but junior Jamie DeNoewer, as has t>een her custom all year, loped to the.front
ot the Mustangs' pack, where she stayed
tae rest of the way.
DeNoewer, who was second at Pacific
Coast League finals and third at the South-
ern Section finals, finished third in 18:54.
Senior Zoila Gomez, around whom a
controversy swirled during a five-day peri-
~ in October, finished 11th for the cham-
'p!ons in 19:39, while Van De Walker psed 13th with a personal-record 19:39.
Sophomore Sarah C~on, who had fin-
ish~ 22nd out of 95 competitors at the sec-
tion finals, was 15th out of 133 state rivals.
Her time of 19:43 was also a PR.
Sophomore Jackie Nguyen 41st in the
Southern Section meet the previous week
at Mt. San Antonio College, wound up
33rd in Fresno, adding yet another PR
(20:15) to the Mustangs' collection.
Mesa's 51 combined points easily bested
top-ranked Campolindo (81), Southern
Section champion Nordoff (81) and Corona
del Mar (86). Both Nordoff and CdM had
finished ahead of the Mustangs a t the sec-
tion finals.
No one in the PCL finished ahead of the
Mustangs on the course, but an error in
judgment by some Mesa adm.i.Qistrators
nearly provided Busi's girls their toughest
opposition.
Busi, uncertain before the season began
as to the eligibility status of Gomez, who
transferred to Mesa from Mexico, openly
questioned officials in the athletic and
counseling offices whether Gomez met C IF
standards.
He was assured there wasn't a problem,
but Learned otherwise Oct. 20, when he
was told by school officials that she was
indeed ineligible.
The three PCL duel-meet victories in
which Gomez had already competed (over
University, Estancia and Aliso Niguel)
were all forfeited, which wound up costing

the team the league title.
An aggravated Busi, backed up by his
disappointed athletes, wondered aloud if
the administrative confusion had cost the
team much more than that.
Busi vented his anger with administra-
tors in the Daily Pilot, where BiJJ Wetten-
gel, a Mesa counselor, was candidly quot·
ed as accepting blame.
An lette r to the. editor detail ing the
team's frustration, composed by Cotton,
Van De Walker and DeNoewer, dppeared
in the Oct. 24 Pilot, and stated: "This loss
crushed our faith of becoming the Pacific
Coast League champions for the first time
in 17 years, and all hope of going to state as
a team. Our team's season has now deteri-
orated.·
That season was salvaged the very same
day the letter was published, however,
when CIF Southern Section Commissioner
Dean Crowley announced a hardship
waiver had been granted, restonng
Gomez's eligibility.
The forfeits stood, which did eventually
cost the Mustangs that elusive league
crown. But with Gomez back in the fold,
her team's spirits soared, while its times
diminished.
Emotion flowed from Mesa runners,
coaches and supporters after the victorious
effort in Fresno and Busl tried to sum it all
up.
"It's been a great season with a lot of ups
and downs. It's been a roller-coaster season
emotionally.•

COSTA MESA -To borrow a time-honored sports
cliche, you can "throw out the records" when con-
sidering the composite success achieved by Costa
Mesa High girls athletics in the 1997-98 school year.
To do anything less. in fact, would be downright
unjust.
Consider, the Mustdngs claimed the school's first
state title -in any sport, boys or girls -shared a
Pacific Coast League crown, earned CIF Southern
Section playoff berths in basketball, volleyball and
water polo, and added noteworthy individual post-
season prosperity in track and field, swimming and

Surprisingly. however, only two Mesa teams fin-
ished with a winning overall record, and one of
those was posted by a soccer squad that did not
make the playoffs. ·
Cross country, which accounted for the state
crown, would have added a PCL title, as well; if not
for an administrative oversight. which forced the
team to forfeit three league dual-meet wins for using
a then-ineligible runner.
PCL crown, but Gomez's eligibility was later

Permatech Shutters are made of
conventional wood construction, but the
wood is pro,.ected by Resiloy Instead ot
paint. The Resiloy covers the the wood as a
sleeve or skin -80 times thicker than paint.
Resiloy won 't chip, peel, fade, crack or
change color like paint, and has a half life of
500 years. This coating makes the shutter a
breeze to dust or wash with just soap and
water. No other maintenance is necessary or
recommended. Guaranteed for life, these
shutte rs usually cost less than shutters
protec t e d with only paint .
To ask questions, get an idea of what
shutters would cost for your home over the
phone, or a free in-home estimate, call:

A • This hand is just a whisker shon
of a jump shift Add the queen of
diamonds to the holding 1ns1.cad of

forcing jump in clubs al our next
