How about cameraS to catch -,;ed.;.light mnners?
.
~· R ecently our neighbor was slammed into at the
intersection of Newport Boulevard and Pair Drive
by a woman who ran a red light -this happens
way too much these days.
I myself was hit at Newport and Bristol Street a
number of years ago by someone who ran a red .
In our tract of Mesa del Mar, you can watch people
constantly running through the four-way stop at
Junipero and Presidio drives.
The cops have a field day issuing tickets there -
easy money. ' And we found out most of the cars are not even
residents of the tract -just passing through to wher-
ever.
On a recent trip home to Auckland, New Zealand, I Reader could not believe how slow the local traffic runs, but
with population growth (more than 1 million in Auck-restiond.s
to acd-: • land City) and the high rate of death and injury on the dents roads, they have slowed down everyone by using cam-caused by eras.
Intersections equipped with cameras catch you motorists ,
either running a red light or jumping a green light. running
Drive too fast on long stretches of roads and snap, red Ugh~,
like this you have yourself a ticket; come over a hill or rise too one at fast and they get you with a camera set up in the trunk Fair Drive or a parked car. and New-Question these tickets and you get yourself a copy of port the photo -with you and your license plate visible -Boule-as a few of my friends had displayed on their refrigera-vard. tors.
So my suggestion is to install these cameras, slow
dnvers down, and save people from these senseless
accidents.

No more excuses
for low test scores
Lucky us. Our teachers are
underpaid, our campuses are
falling apart, but our school district
is fortunate enough to have a
director of assessment programs.
Surely, she will give it to us
straight.
First, she speaks of our two
communities being very, very
different. What two communi-
ties? Do you become part of a
different community because
you don't speak English?
I thought it was one school
district, one community. Perhaps
she was referring to the disparity
between the haves and have
nots. Next, she informs us that
student test scwes are not like
horse-race scores. As an avid
racetrack fan, I can honestly~say,
I have never been on £s€"
because of his ability t
that were marginal.
That is 13 below-average
schools out of 24. Clearly, this
shows that most schools did not
score well. Rather than listen to
the district's latest spin, doctor, I
came up with an assessment of
my own.
Let's flush these results down
the toilet, if only the toilets at
school worked.

Sounding out on
amphitheater concerns
Contrary to the writer who
described the Pacific Amphithe-
atre as an opportunity to bring
entertainment and the arts to
Costa Mesa, I feel that the occa-
sional excessive volume of the
concerts might be too high a price
"to bring back arts and entertain-
ment to the amphitheater.·
This entire mess, however, bas
little to do with entertainment or
the arts. It's about a few slick
entrepre neurs outsmarting some
naive county, city and fairgrounds
the mix the fact that most of the
amphitheater's rock music sound
was engineered, not like the
records, but to emphasize the
bass and kick drum until you
could feel it in your liver.
The quality and style of the
music was never a real part of
the issue. Many of us thoroughly
enjoyed the wide variety of
music that the amphitheater fea-
tured -but we prefer it when
we would like to hear it -not
when we're forced to hear it.
This is really about our right to
individual, personal privacy.
The citizen complaints were
that the sound was intrusive, and
forced us to close our doors and
windows in the middle of sum-
mer (and some of us don't have
air conditioning). No other busi-
ness is given that much license

TUESDAY, JUNE 30, 1-•
Costa Mesa past was a bit fresher than the present
W hile tbe changes in
Newport Beach between
the ·~Os and the present
have been dramatic, they do not
compare with the changes in
Costa Mesa during that same
period.
Newport Beach has always
existed because of the harbor.
Balboa reformed. Newport lost its
canneries. Balboa Island ceased
pouring raw sewage into the bay.
Corona del Mar sold its last $50
lot. More villages were added,
but the lifestyle of the town's
inhabitants didn't change too
much. Oh, it got a little more
crowded, but the town was still
built around the harbor.
With Costa Mesa, the change
between the thriving, driving,
cosmopolitan city of today and
the rural community of the '20s is
robe rt
gar:dner
nothing short of dramatic. Maybe
not as dramatic as the change of
the island of Manhattan from the
time some canny Dutch traders
bought the wh?le island for $23
worth of trink•, but pretty dra-
matic.
My first memories of Costa
Meso during the '20s are based
on trips to Santa An.a by stage.
Once we passed the Arches we
were in a str;.ctly rural environ-
ment. No beach cottages crowd-
ed together on 25-foot lots. In
Costa Mesa it seemed that each
house was located on at least an
acre of land. It wasn't the Great
Plains, but compared to Newport
Beach it was wide-open space.
Each house had a barn or
shed. Each house had an exten-
sive vegetable garden. Each
house had chickens and rabbits.
Each house had fruit trees. Most
houses had horses and cows. It
seemed to me that every house
had a fruit and vegetable stand
in front and carried a sign read-
•
ing •fresh chicltell$ and rabbits."
Fresh! The word bas almost
left our language. How many
days does it take a tomato, a
chicken, an apricot to reach your
local supermarket? Fruits and
vegetables are picked green and
sent to the market Chickens and
rabbits show up frozen.
In the Costa Mesa of the '20s,
you could buy what the modem
generation has rarely experi-
enced, really fresh fruit, vegeta-
bles, chickens and rabbits. When
you bought from the roadside
stands in Costa Mesa, you
bought fruit and vegetables
picked that morning.
You want a fresh chicken?
Whack, off goes the head, a few
quick movements of the hands,
off go the feathers, and you are
handed a really fresh chicken .
So, too, with rabbits, a dellc.acy
seldom even found in markets
today. .
Al1d who inhabited this won·
derland? People. Big people.
Really big people. Giants.
The first real, authentic Costa
Mesan I ever knew was Hal Pan-
gle. I was working at the Ren-
dezvous ballroom as a gate boy.
As a gate boy you were constant-
ly having altercations with
dancers who resented being
.hauled off the floor after each
dance by gate boys tugging on a
rope that cut into the dancers'
backs.
About the time fisticuffs were
in order, you would yell, ·Pan-
gle!• and a huge young man
would appear, and suddenly your
erstwhile antagonist became
docile. Pangle was big and after-
ward became a famous footbell
player. He was from COlta MMe.
Compared to Pangle, all tbe nwt
·of us were Lilliputiam.
l also disoovered that Law
enforcement in Costa Mesa was
peopled by giants. First was Coo-
stable Bill Ponting at 6 toot plus.
Add a cowboy bat and boots, , •
and Ponting and his big belly -
filled a doorway.
The next constable was frank
·nny" Vaughn, father of Dob
Vaughn. 11ny was as tall u Don.
6 foot 8 inches, and trucker. He
had to weigh more than 300
pounds.
So I remember Costa Mesa as
small farms peopled with giants.

local beaches.
'ifopical Storm Blas, which has
downgraded from a hurricane,
contributed to steady 5-foot
swells and even larger 10-to 12-
foot waves at the Wedge, a popu-
lar bodysurfing spot. The storm
will dissipate over the Pacific
Ocean in the next two days said a
spokesperson for the National
Weather Service.
An estimated 40,000 to 60,000
beachgoers took advantage of the
sunny weather on Monday,
according to fire and marine
department officials.
Rescue crews were kept busy
over the weekend, responding to
more than 100 emergency calls
Sunday alone.
·we had quite a few rescues,
especially late Sunday after-
noon,• said lifeguard Lt. Jim
Turner. "We've had big crowds
and lots of traffic. It's been hard to
leave the beaches because all the
local streets are tied up."
The most serious incident was
a near drowning on Friday after-
noon.
Jean Yang, 20, was taken to
Hoag Hospital after he reportedly
got caught in a rip current. He
was treated and released.
With a three-day holiday
weekend coming, lifeguards are
expecting about 100,000 people,
depending on the weather condi-
tions.
Meteorologists forecast sunny
skies over the next several days
leading into one of summer's
busiest weekends. Temperatures
will remain in the 70s, and the
surf will continue to produce 3-to
4-foot waves.

By Greg Risling, Daily Pilot . ¥ investigator who is compil-
ing a detailed report about a
plane crash at John Wayne Air-

wake turbulence warning was

his landing that day, there was
nothing unusual about the flight.
Richard Parker of the National

Parker said he listened to tow-

any unusual activity prior to the
accident.
•All of the communication was
routine and there wasn't refer-

Witnesses who saw the plane

CdM girls add two more CIF

A title
match for
the ages
• Coach Mang felt aging
effects during and after
tennis team's marathon
CIF championship triumph.
By Barry Faulkner, Daily Piiot
CORONA DEL MAR -Before
the Corona del Mar High girls
tennis team could shave about
10 years off Coach Tun Mang's
appearance, it first had to rob a
couple years from hls We
expectancy.
The former came in the form
of an agreement reached
between Mang and the Cd.M
players, who promised to dye his
sliver hair brown and shave his
familiar mustache if they could
provide him the firs t CIF
Southern Section team title of his
distinguished 28-year coaching
career.
The latter was the toll
wrought by a four-hour, 11 -7
title-match victory over six-time
defending CIF Division I
champion Peninsula, Nov. 24 at
the Claremont
Club.
Mang.
however, wasn't
about to qwbble
with figures after
hls top-seeded
squad denied
Peninsula the
crown for the
Mang first time m
that school's
seven-year existence.
~The girls wanted to dye it
themselves, but I wasn't about to
let that happen,• Mang said.
·So, before our banquet, I dyed
my own hair brown and shaved
the mustache myself. The girls
said my hair wasn't dark
enough, so they vowed to take
matters into their own hands the
next time. But I got a lot of nice
comments from people who said
it made me look 10 years
younger.•
Mang's aging process.
however, was accelerated
considerably at the Claremont
Club, where Junior Ruchika
Budhraja did her best to prolong
the suspense -and, some
spectators might have said,
agony -with a 2112-hour
singles set against the Panthers'
Elizabeth Lee.
• (Budhraja) didn't want to
make any mistakes, so she was
being cautious,• Mang
explained of the often boring
baseline exchanges between the
two players. Sortie points were
clocked at more than 10
minutes, as the remaining
singles players began to swten
and become impatient, unable to
continue their matches until
Bud.h.raja-Lee produced a
winner.
•At one point, (Cd.M senior
singles standout Nina Vaughan)
came up and asked me if we
could just suspend their match
and continue it later, so we could
finish the rest of the singles
matches/ Mang recalled. •Even
J:!I,an, one of our match
o , spoke with me about
different possibllitlel. It got to a
point where we weren't sure ju.st
what we were going to do. It
wu sure a rare occurreQC9. •
Budbraja, despite growing
lncreu:tngly sell-comdoua over
the impatient groana of the
lizable and cw1ous crowd,
eventually prevailed to deadlock
the team score at 6~.
• (B~(lja) wu a little upset,

Tennis and volleyball
won CIF titles and cross
country nearly completed
an unprecedented
three-sport sweep.
By Barry Faulkner, Daily Pilot
E l Nifto.·induced rainfall
pelted South.em Cali-
fornia during the 1997-
98 school year, but
Corona del Mar High
girls athletics created a reign of its
own during an unprecedented
fall season that produced two CIF
Southern Section champions and
one runner-up.
Tennis and volleyball both
captured ultimate spoils, claiming
section titles in Division I and
Division ID-AA, respectively,
while cross country settled for
second-place in CIP Division IV,
then finished fourth in the state.
Only an upset victory by Nord-
off over the top.seeded Sea Kings
at the section cross country finals
came between Corona del Mar
and a first-ever sweep of the
Southern Section's three fall-sport
titles for girls team sports.
Schools had won two of the
three championships eight times
before, including three doubles
by Cd.M (volleyball and tennis in
1978, as well as volleyball and
cross country in '92 and '93).
But the CdM tennis team's loss
in the '93 semifinals was the clos-
est any school had come to the
title trifecta, until this year's near
miss.
The singles triumvirate of Nina
and Nadia Vaughan -the Sea
View League champion and run-
ner-up, respectively -as well as
Caylan Leslie, who went on to
win the Ojai Tennis Tournament
later in the spring, paced the Sea
Kings' fifth section championship
team, which ended Peninsula's
stranglehold on the Division I
crown at six straight years.
All·CIF standouts Jordana
Havriluk, Sarah Petry and Corre
Myer paced Coach Steve Conti's
volleyball squad to its slxlh
Southern Section crown.
Sophomore Uz Morse wu
among the catalysts on Coach BW
Sumner's deep and balanced
cross country contingent, but a
fall later cost her a second straight
section title ln the 800 meters and
the Division rv track and field
finals.
Jennifer Blair (cross country
and track), Meagan Hardt (water
polo and IWim.mlng, though a
shoulder injury prematurely end·
ed her seuon in the latter) an4
Sarah Dunlap (buketbe.11) all dis·
played outstandlng individual tal·

But it became abundantly
dear by the impressive CdM
debuts of freshmen Britta Vogele
(aoccer aDd buketball), Jaycee
Mahler (aoa country, 100CW an<l

to capture its first section crown
since 1989.
·we're playing for jewelry
(championship rings) and that's
something no one can refuse on
this team," senior Nina Vaughan
said of the Peninsula conquest,
which capped a 22·1 campaign.
The road to the title included a
Sea View split with Woodbridge,
as well as a three· match sweep of
Back Bay rival Newport, includ· '
ing a 13-5 triumph in the Division •
I semifinals.
Sophomores Nadia Vaughap '.
and Caylan Leslie joined sea~,
soned veteran Nina Vaughan to
provide a potent singles lineup
during the regular season~
thought Leslie took to doubles in
the postseason, shifting juniot
Ruchi.ka Budbraja into the solo
routine.
Courtney Tenerelli, Jenny ·

spearheaded the doubles contin·
gent.
The elder Vaughan beat her
sister, 6-0, 6-2, in the league sin-
