more than equal to the task.'
They should be. The topic of
the debate, after all, is a topic
near and dear to the heart of any
student: school uniforms.
Comcast Cable will televise
the debate live from Newport
Beach City Hall beginning at 7
p.m The participants are lined
up, although they do not know
which side will take the pro-uni·
form position and which side will
take the opposing view. That
question will be decided by a coin
toss before the debate.
In other words, if the coin falls
a given way, the students may
have to argue in favor of a uni·
form dress code.
•That would be fun,• said
Michael Hoevel, speech and
debate team president. ·1 think
on regular time, it would probably
be the other way around.•
Several months ago, the dty of
Newport Beach gave the speech
and debate team a $2,900 grant
-money which, Hedges said,
would otherwise have gone to the
Orange County Human Relations
Commission.
City officials then organized
the televised debate as a means of
highlighting the debate team's
skill ... and of having fun. Brick·

involved since more than half the
students at Newport Harbor High
School live in Costa Mesa.

NEWPORT-MESA -About 90 Estancia High School
parents, students and faculty members, donning the
school colors, packed into an already crowded school
district boardroom Tuesday and pleaded with trustees
not to close their school.
Though the school board was not scheduled to dis·
cuss merging Estancia and Costa Mesa high schools,

with applause as they
told board members and

1\vo weeks ago school board members agreed to
take a look at merging district high schools, citing the
increased educational advantages of large schools.
Superintendent Mac Bernd will present a detailed
report June 11 as to the best ways to study such a com·
plicated and potentially unpopular proposal. No formal
merger project is on the table, he said. •
But the Estancia community wanted its voice heard.
"These school really work (now),• said Nonn Fricker,
who has two daughters attending the school. •They
work academically. The dedicated staff knows most stu·

a high level of individual attention for these students.•
School board president Jim de Boom quickly moved
to assure the parents no decision has been made and all
discussions would be public with much notice.

operation of the used book

Central Library.
A LIBRARY DONOR
Robison is a Newport Beach
Friends of the Library courier
who brings all the donated
books to the book stdre work
room for sorting and pricing
but also spends his time keep-
ing Balboa Island looking
beautiful.
He is always on the move.
Every Tuesdays, Robison dri-
ves with his own white van
picking up donated books and
no-loQger-checked-out books
from Mariners, Balboa and
Corona del Mar libraries to the
Newport Beach Central
Library's used bookstore.
He also works once or twice
a month in the used bookstore.
"I donate my time, gas,
and van picking up and deliv-
ering books," Robison said.
A former 17 -year Los Ange-
les City Fire Department civil-
ian administrative chief and
former 17-year LAPD adminis-
trative services officer, Robi-
son moved from San Marino
four years ago and picked Bal-
boa Island to spend his retire-
ment life.
"We've vacationed here for
25 years and wanted to come
here very badly," Robison
said.
PICKING UP WHERE
HE LEFT OFF
He was a former San Mari-
no Friends of the Library Vol-
unteer and cl:\ose to continue
in Newport Beach.
"I couldn't wait to get
involved," he said. "It's a won-
derful opportunity to serve the
community. and enjoy myseU
al the same time. It's been fun
as well as productive. lf you're
not productive when you
retire, it's difficult to be hap-
py.".
By carrying 30 to 50 books
a week and 500 to 600 books
for the annual book sales,
which attracts people from all
over, Robison doesn't need to
go to the gym.
•That's how I keep in
shape. It saves me $100 a
month going to the gym,•
Robison said.
Just volunteering his time
in one org:anization isn't
enough for Robison. He keeps
Balboa Island looking beauti-
ful and is an active volunteer
for the First Church of New-
port Beach.
"It gives me a sense of
satisfaction by helping oth-
ers. I know what it takes for
a place to work. City tax dol-
lars don't cover everything,"
he said.
As a member of Balboa
Island Improvement Associa-
tion and Little Island Proper-
ty Association, Robison and
his wife, Nancy, want to con-
tribute their time making
Balboa lsland clean and
pleasant for local residents
and visitors.
In fact, the 450 colorful
tulips at the Balboa Island
entrance are thanks to Robi-
son and his wife, who is the
author of several children's
books. He also donated petu-
nias.
"We donated and planted
the tulips. It was a fun thing to
do. We saw flower catalogs
and said 'let's do it,'"
Furthermore, Robison is
responsible for maintaining
the doggy walk bags and also
paints the public benches.
His hobbies include hilting,
walking, gardening and ten-
nis. During the months
between April and November,
Robison swims in the Bay.
GETTING CITED ON THE JOB
Just recently, Robison won
a ticket violation after appeal-
ing twice for parking in a red
zone while loading and deliv-
ering books to the library.
But he parks in the proper
parking space now and won't
park in the red z'one anymore.

The Skinners, water quality
activists since the mid-1980s, say
the disposal of construction pro-
ject waste water into the bay
would be a "major step back-
wards" .in efforts to keep the bay
free of algae. The Skinners main-
tain the addition of up to 7 ,000
pounds a day of nitrates for three
years could easily cause the algae
blooms, which activists spent
years trying to eliminate.
"l'm afraid we need our most
articulate arguments Friday to
dissuade them from using the bay
as a low-cost di.Sposal ground,•
Jack Skinner told the council
toward the end of Monday's
meeting.
City officials have spent the
last several months battling a
sunilar proposal by the Irvine
Ranch Waler District, which is
seeking to save disposal costs by
dumping highly treated sewage
water into the bay. City officials
say the Eastern toll road builders
are trying to link the disposal of
its waste water into a segment of
IRWD's proposal.

CORONA DEL MAR -For a
32-year-old Moreno Valley
woman, what began as a pleasant
day of relaxing on the beach and
exploring the rocky jetty ended in
twisting pain.
As Jeanie Schlomer was climb-
mg on the uneven rocks of the
east jetty at Corona del Mar State
Beach Monday, "enjoying the late
afternoon ocean breeze," she fell
and fractured her leg in three
places, said John Blauer, the
Newport Beach Fire and Marine
Department spokesman.
Llleguard and fire department
rescue workers had to climb close
to a quarter-of a mile along the
rocky terrain to rescue Schlomer,
Blauer said. Because of the diffi-
cult conditions on the rocks, it
takes a minimum of six rescue
workers to maneuver a stretcher
carrying an injured person over
the uneven rocks, some which are
up to 15 feet high, he said.
Once the rescue workers
moved Schlomer safely down to
the water level, she was taken by
lifeguard boat to the Harbor
Patrol then on to Hoag Memorial
Presbyterian Hospital where her
leg was treated.
While the 6:05 p.m. accident
was the only major one on the
popular jetties over the holiday
weekend, there are precautions
rock explorers should take,
Blauer said.
"Walking out on the Jetties can
be hazardous because of the wide
separation between each cap-
stone,~ Blauer said. "Someone
should use extreme caution and
wear tennis shoes or similar
footwear to prevent injury."
Such precautions should be
taken particularly late in the
evening and early morning hours
or during heavy surf conditions,
he said.

• If the readers don't perlonn this
service, I will probably step in occa-
sionally out of sheer frustration.
Meanwhile, I plan to enjoy the
six-pack of Sam Adams (nice
touch) ale the mayor sent me and
point out to the readers of this
newspaper weekly that there are
positions to the left of Pat
Buchanan and Robert Doman
that would serve both their inter-
ests and the interests of this
country quite well, indeed.
Now. to the somewhat reluc-
tant topic of the day.
Marie Davidson wrote a funny.
ptmgent letter to the Pilot about gov-
joseph n.
bell
emment handouts, which he con-
duded by suggesting that the Pilot
venty my M authenticity as a U.S. war
veteran" for those readers who don't
know my personal history.
On the same day, I received a
letter from Costa Mesa resident
Bill Dunlap, who is a retired
Navy pilot, that said in part: "I.
think your generally avoiding ref-
erence to your service in World
War II is highly commendable. I
cringe at the notion, appar~ntly
held by many, that military ser-
vice, per se, necessarily identifies
a patriot That comes from a
senior male member of a large
family whose men have served
this nation for two centuries in all
branches of service."
Bill Dunlap's comment
explains precisely why -
beyond a few offhand mentions
-I haven't dealt with my mill-
tary service. Th t and the fact
that I wasn't fee at all defen-
sive about explaining myself,
especially to letter writers who
sounded off without any idea ot
what they were talking about.
But I think Mark Davidson's
suggestion is valid. so here are
my mili.t.a.ry "credentials.• I was a
junior at the University of Mis-
souri when the Japanese attaclced
Pearl Harbor. I enlisted a week
later in the Navy Air Corps. I got
my Navy wings in May, 1943, a
week before an 18-year-old
ensiWt named George Bush (our
pictures appear on facing pages
in a Navy Air 1\'aining yearbook
called WThe Slipstream").
' I served as a Navy pilot -fty-
ing a range of aircraft from dive
bombers to transports -for
altnost four years, the last seven
months in the south Pacific.
I make no claim for heroics,
never have, and I have no clue as
to where in hell a letter writer to
the Pilot named Tom Williams got
that idea. Surviving a war is
mosUy luck. We go where we are
sent and do the best we can
when we get there -which is
what I did, along with about 10
million other American men and
women. I may refer to some of
those experiences occasionally if
they fit the context of what I'm
writing. But there's only one
claim I will ever make: that I feel
and have always felt one bell of a
lot of pride in that service, which
shaped my life in many ways.
Water district to have workshop on budget
COSTA MESA -Mesa Consol-
idated Water District's board of
directors will hold a budget work-
shop today, giving residents an
opportunity to ask questions and
comment on the agency's finan-
cial plan for the coming fiscal year.
Mesa general manager Karl
Kemp presented the proposed $1S.
million budget to the board of direc-
tors two weeks ago, saying it was
balanced and free ot. a rate increase.
According to the proposed
plan, 95% of the district's revenue
will come from water sales. That's
up 2% from this year.
The district anticipates spend-
ing about $15.2 million next year
with most of that going toward
water supply, financial costs and
department expenses. This year,
the district bas spent an estimated
$15.8 million, devoting a little
more to water system costs than

One other note before we get
away from this forever. Bill Dunlap
confessed in bis letter that he
would like to say more about the
manner in which some people use
military service to glorify them-
selves but wonied that be might be
dubbed a #closet liberal.· I assured
him I would take the heat for this if
he would just explain a little fur-
ther. So here's what he told m~
"It's just that I see references to
military service often used in what
I feel are excessi'Ve ways. Politi-
cians use il -sometimes not too
accurately-as evidence of instant
patriotism, which isn't necessarily
so. Even on a job resume, there is
always that same implication. It's
right and good to be proud of mili-
tary service, and it's a legitimate
and important part c1 anyone's per-
sonal history, but I just don't think it
should be traded on excessively.
"That can lead to a kind of jin-
goism that isn't healthy today
because it is becoming more and
more essential that we get along
with the rest of the world commu-
nity -and vice versa. That's all I
had in mind -and it won't stop
me from telling World War tI sto-
ries whenever I get the chance.•
U this makes Bill Dunlap a
"closet liberal.· then we're in
worse shape than I thought. Mean-
while, I hope this subject is closed
-at least until I get the chance to
drop in one of my own war stories.

Asbury is the city's fifth fatality
in four traffic accidents so far lhis
year, according to Torres who
added that the numbers are up
compared to 1995 when there
was a total of three traffic fatali-
ties in the city fo r the entire year.
Some police belleve Asbury
didn't have to be added to this
year's grim list.
·He didn't wear a helmet,~ said
Costa Mesa police Lt. John Fitz·
patrick. "I feel that if he had been
wearing a helmet, it would have
lessened his injuries and saved his
lif .. e.
While it is not a law for adults
Roeder said he'd like to "lay a
framework" for future acqulsl·
ttons, • to avoid confusion and
make tor smoother transactions.
"It's just so that we don't have
to go through this every time,•
Roeder said. •we would like for
tbe council to identify which sites
the city would have long-term
interest ln, so that we will be pre-
pared and we won't have this
long-running debate with the
school district about the Naylor
Act."
The two agencies exchanged
words a few months ago, when
the school district considered sell·
ing off the Monte Vista School
site and claiming an exemption to
the Naylor Act, which requires a
school district to offer the proper-
ty to other local agencies at a dis-
counted price. The district lC?ter
decided to keep that property
and instead sell the high school
farm site.

bike, Fitzpatrick believes wear·
ing a helmet is a cruciaJ safety
practice.
"I see a Jot of bead injuries,
and I feel they could be prevent·
ed if (cyclists) wear a helmet," he
said. .
The preliminary cause of lhe
accident, which is still being
investigated, indicates Asbury
was at fa wt and ran tho red light
at the intersection, Fitzpatrick
said. He added that while speed -
ing· is a problem in that area,
speed was not a factor in this col·
lision nor is the area accident
prone, he said.
There is no indication of drugs
or aJcohol being involved ·in the
accident, police said.

She f lrst c~ed the post

was no news of her missing

Pargo Bank in Aliso Viejo last
week confumed her suspicions.
•Someone did steal my
checks;• she said. "It's such a
violation."
A man had forgotten his wal-
let in the Wells Pargo branch,
and found inside it were some
take identification cards and
Linda's checks, which had been
alte red but not yet cashed -
her name and signatwe had
been bleached out, she and
bank officials said.
Unfortunately, this type of
theft happens often and is
widespread throughout the

Mail theft usually occurs at
residential and business mail-

In the Bronco B's Division, Nick-Zimmerman bad his
longest outing of the season (4113 innings), while Jarrod
Woolard made his pitching debut and allowed no earned
rlms in 12/J innings, but Tustin beat Newport, 8-7.
Newport's comeback attempt started in the fifth inning
when Ryan Heenan singled and scored on Ryan Torrey's
double. Torrey scored on Jesse Pemstein's single . The game
(and Newport's comeback) was stopped by the time-limit
rule (two hours).
Ne wport made two double plays m the game. Catcher
Torrey caught a P,OP up and threw to third for a second out;
and the second double play was traditional. when shortstop
Peter Dugan fed ~ond baseman Heen an, who fired to first
baseman Michael McDonald.
• In another Bronco B game, Newport def eaJ.ed Dana
Point, 9·8, playing the spoiler role. But Heenan hurt }Us
elbow in the second inning on the mound. Gavin Sdunidt,
, pitching for the first time in the weekend tournament, came
in to halt a Dana Point rally.
Woolard and Zimmerman also pitched for Newport,
which faced a Dana Point team that was 3-1 and headed for
the title game . But NHBA's Bronco B's sent Dana Ponit
home.
In the bottom of the last inning and down two runs, New-

' bled home two runs on a drive to center field. Heenan'S sin-1 gle to right field scored the game-winning run.

• Memorial Day Classic
turns into a marathon effort.
A total of 60 teams, including those
from the Newport Harbor Baseball
Association, participated in the Irvine
Memorial Day Classic for players aged
8-14, a tournament open to all leagues.
The primary purpose for NHBA's
entry in the tournament is to play
against competitive, well-organized
teams, and to play in more difficult
game sitUations with their all~star
teammates. Dana Point, Irvine, Foun-
tain Valley, Tustin, Whittier, Corona,
El Toro and Garden Grove were
among the other areas participating.
Many of the teams will continue to
play against each other for the next six
weeks. In the future. many NHBA
players will enconnter the same com-
petitors in their respective lugh
schools.
Members of NHBA will also com-
pete in the St. Hedwig's Tournament
in Los Alamitos (June 19) and the Dis-
trict Pony League Tournament (July 4-
8).
• The Newport Harbor Pony All-
Stars opened its 1996 season at the
lrvine Memorial Day Classic last
weekend, firtishing 1-3-1 in the two-
day tournament.
Nick Langsdorf, a Newport stand-
out, chipped a bone in his thumb in
the second inning of the final game
and could be lost for four weeks.
Langsdorf, a catcher, was in cl
home-plate collision with Irvine's Matt
Wooley, who was stealing home with
the bases loaded and two out. Langs-
dorf applied the tag for the inning's
final out.
In the tournament, Langsdorf went
1 O for 17 at the plate with five doubles
and a tnple, while driving in rune of
the team's 25 runs. He also pitched
three shutout innings and made a
great defensive play at catcher, block-
ing the plate to prevent a run from
scoring in a tie game.
Newport's Otto Verhulst was also
hot, going 9 for 15 with a double, triple
and a towering two-run home run to
left-center field i.ri Newport's victory
on Sunday. On the monnd, Verhulst
struck out five in three innings.
Justin Jacobs, Newport's third
baseman, was 6 for 15 with three triple
and three RBI.
Scott Tippett, Newport's shortstop,
was 5 for 12 and keyed a pair of dou-
ble plays. Matt Cohen and Ryan
Cook also had three hits for Newport
in the tournament, which marked the
return of Newport ace pitcher Scott
Beerer, a right-bander who missed
most the regular season with a bro-
ken right leg.
Beeier pitched in four of the five
games. allowmg only one earned run
and five hits in nearly seven Ulilings,
while striking out a dozen.
Tippett, the winrung pitcher in ..

At the Mallory, hosted by the U.S.

conditions that were not advantageous to
their weight.

~e top weight that they could attain was

250 pounds. In the almost gal~ winds of
the Mallory, the heavier and not as
talented teams were able to outsail
Newport just because of this weight factor.
But Newport did hold its own, pulling out
an impressive fifth place.
Mandy McDonnell started A division,
sailing with Cryssa Byers, with Brian
Bissell and Byers finishing out the regatta.
Patrick Hogan sailed B division the
entire time, switching between Gary
Dougherty, Heather Porter and Kassy
Thompson as crews.
Alison Hill was also part of the
Nationals team, but did not see any
sailing time as she is a light crew.
A division saw some tough sailing, as
they not only competed in heavy winds,
but also 420s, a boat that the team is not
very familiar with. The 420s at Navy are
particularly tough, because they are built
to last a long time, with bumpers around
the hull and made ot reinforced fiberglass.
These boats are extremely heavy,
making them a good deal different from
the Plying Juniors that are sailed on the
West Coast. The A division sailors ended
up in 14th place.
Hogan bad a much better go of it in B
division, where he won by six points.
Sailing in FJs, Hogan relied on his
well-honed doublehanded skills to grind
through the fleet and remain extremely
consistent iI) the inconststent breezes.
"Patrick sailed really well," said Coach
Jaime Malm. "He bad tremendous
boatspeed."
• And wllat is next for these young
sailors?
McDonnell will be leaving the team to
sail for Boston College in the fall, leaving
Hogan and Bissell to continue the
tradition.
But you won't see most of the team
a.round this summer as they will be
traveling across the country to compete in
events like the U,S. Youth Championships
in Louisiana and the Detroit Team Race.
