Pay homage to America
on the Fourth of July
"My fellow Americans,"' ask not what
your country can do for you -ask what
you can do for your country."
-John·F. Kennedy
T he Fourth of July is a fun and fes-
llve holidoy But it is much more
than 1ust a day off from work and
a ddy full of family, friends and fire-
works. Its s1gruJmmce·goes beyond pic-
nics, parades dnd clearance sales, a nd
we owe it to our forefathers to remem-
b~r why we celebrate the fourth in the
hllil (>ldce.
It LS the day lhdt celebrates the adop-
tion of th~ Declaration of independence,
which starts wtth ·we hold these truths to.
be sell-evident. that all men dfe created
equctl, that they are endowed by theu
CTedlor with certcnn unallenable rights,
that among these dfe We, liberty and the
purswt of happiness"
Th~sc words are famous not only for
thelf bedutiful prose but for the pro-
found truth thdl, as Thomas Jefferson
often sa1d, "the God who gave us We
gave us l.Jberty at the same time."
A t Terminal Island Prison last
year, a burly, bald crl.m.inal
stood (Uld spoke with tears in
his eyes to fell ow inmates and mem-
bers of Kairos, a nondenominational
prison mitUstry. •1 only cried two times
in my We: once whe n my father died
and I couldn't make the funeral, and
today.• The tattooed. hardened criml.rtal,
who bad been 10 the federal prison
system for 30 years, used to snicker as
membefs of the Kairos ministry walked
by. Now, he can't imagine We without
tbem.
"To think I had to come to a place
like this to find love,~ he said.
Lay mfiusters from locaJ Catholic
and Protestant churches -who make ··
up the Kairos group -will once again
set foot in the San Pedro-based prison
July 16-19, lo share the word of God
with 42 inmates in hopes that a three-
ddy encounter in the C(hapel will spiri-
. _rually transform. the li-ks of partic1-
pan.is.
Even hard-core criminals have
found renewal and hope through the
efforts of the Kairos teams, which pray
and prepare months ahead for their
visits, and then go into the prisons to
spend up to 12-hour days with
inmates.
Ari American Indian serving a hie
sentence was deeply touche~ by his
participation 10 the Kairos experience.
"When I was young, my father
raised me to have a heart of stone, and
you have broken my heart of stone,•
he told the group. ft is a ddy to remember those men and
women who gave up theu llves for our
freedom. Sometime between potato sal-
ads and parades, let's honor their memo-·
lies by pra.is10g their patriotism.
Tom Norris, rector for the weekend

Lady Queen of Angels in Newport
Beach, explained that the motivating,
faith-building program is essentia l
because many in.mates have had psy-
chological problems trom day one, due
to a lack of parenting.

Kairos provides a series of talks on

villages and towns outside of
major world oties, except in
Amenca. •
Th~re are people here, in our
Newport-Mesa vi,\lage, from all
over the planet. The American
dream is thriving. And the word
is out -Mecca beckons.
You ask then, why does soct-
ety Suffer so from the negative
forces associated with such
growth and multiculturalism?
Politicians often claim that the
issues are complex. ln fact, many
issues are very simple and
straightforward. We'must
remember,. once again, that free~
dom is not free. Not for any of us.
None of us should assume that
opportunitY means a path to
easy-street.
In other words, a free and just
society should, through the aus-
pices of government, protect and
support citizens who are unable .
to care for themselves by virtu~
of the condition of their minds
and bodies, so dictating that their
fellow able rrian provide care.
Everyone else must work. . ,,,
More important.1.¥, families , •
must once again learn the impor-
tance of laking care of their owp.
And the laws of this land,
designed to protect both the mdi-
vidual and the greater good,
must be adhered to, and
enforced. .
·~And, the Amencan dream will
only survive and flourish tn a
nation wher~ people are still
acutely aw.are of the need to help
one anotljl~r. If America is only
about "me" and not about ·us,"
then sadly, we too, shall perish.
Maybe not tomorrow. Maybe not
in l01¥ears. But, eventually the
weight of selfishness will destroy
l:lS.;
How interesting it is that we are
~ nation built ori the ideals of indi-
' viduhl freedom and opportunity; a
nation where one man can rise to
his dream despite all odds. And
y~t we are nation that must never
let the end justify the means, even
in times of aisis. Anation that is
only great by virtue of the majority
doing what is best for the total,
including the minority.
So then, to the cries of those
people who shout that their civil
liberty is being violated by an
English-only nation, shout back,
join the party, become a real .
member of this great society,
take advantage of the American
way, see where it can lead you

to improve our

: 1. Make preschool available to more children on
ttie West Side through the expansion of the nation-
«11 Head Start Program and by establishirtg state
$1pported preschool programs. If we want second-
~guage learners to transition into English as
OlPld!Y as possible, we need to reach them as early
4S J:Mssible.
2. Provide parent education pr;ograms to train
l)arents to work with their children, become
ID,yolved in the school system and raise their levels
x:pectation for their children.
• 3. Class-size reduction must begin at the kinder-
~n level. Kindergartners need to have the same
(dvantage that grades one through three now
<nJoy in our school district. Most of my students
.~me Crom the Head Start Program, where they
~ve a 17 -3 rabo in their classrooms.• It is absolutely
IJ:nfair to put them into a classroom of,13-to-1 for
l1tilf their day.
: Are the needs of a 4-year-old that much different
Clan a 5-ycal'-old? In our district, with double ses-
$m. we o.re expecting two teachers to meet the
deeds of 66 kindergarten students.
4. With as mo.ny demands now being placed
'R->11 the kindergarten child to learn ~ secon<l lan-
m!&Q• and become successful readers, it is intteas-
hours and 20 minutes. Many school districts are
turning to a full-day kindergarten program. Our
school district needs to explore that option.
5. Exit standards need to be developed for each
grade level, including kindergarten, but retention
should not be the option. Research has not shown
retention to be beneficial in many situations. We
need to utilize summer school and intra-sessions for
both remediation and enrichment. Some schools in
our district are already beginning to do this.
6. We need more personnel to help with remedi-
ation. We need more school nurses, psychologists
and resource specialists. Children with learning
problems can be identified in kindergarten, even in
preschool, but often resour~s for handling these
referrals are so lim1ted that many students are
referred year after year before they receive the
help they need.
7. We need before-school and after-school pro-
grams available to students who are having diffi:
culty with their schoolwork.
Often, second-language learners do not have
anyone at home who is proficient enough in Eng-
lish to help them with their assignments. We need
to establish a tutor corps of college students or take
advantage of the AmeriCorps Uteracy Program to
help students who are falling behind.
8. Most importantly, parents need to take an
active role in their children's education -starting
with reading to your child on a daily basis from
infancy on through child.hood to becoming involved
in the clauroam.
Parents need to become advocates for their chil-
dren'• education. Parents should Join with teachers
on ihlilting upon lower class sizes, grade-level exit
standa.rdl, the return of summer school and more
resouree penonnel for remediation.
United we can make a difference in lmproving
the education of ch1ldren, not just on the West Side
but au over the district.

How CAN· WE
SucH Low PRicFS?
The answer
is really very
simple~
At Fletcher
Jones Motorcars, we service
more Mercedes than any
other dealership in the
nation .. .•
That's because we provide
service you won't find
anywhere else. And we
-monitor rices to make sure
we stay competitive.
Over the last six years, we
have had more than 278,000 . ..
service appointments. That
service volume covers a lot of
overhead.
So when you negotiate
each purchase or lease
.,# agre~ment, we can be very
accommodating.

•Newport's CIF Division I-AA
volleyball title victory over Mira
Costa put Sailors back in control.
.
A CJP Southern Section Division
I-AA championship trophy and
all the trimmings were more than
enough reward for the Newport·
liarbor High girls"loUeyball team after its
15-5, 15·12, 11-15, 15-7 finals triumph
over Mira Costa Nov. 22 at Long Beach
State.
But, in a broader context, the title
helped even the balance of girls volMyball
power within the Southern Section
between the South Bay and the Back Bay.
Combined with the Ill-AA crown won
by Corona del Mar one day befoi:e,
Newport's conquest brought the total of
section championships won by Back
Bay-based programs to 11.
Newport owns four of those and CdM
six more, with Newport Christian's 1963
small-schools cro~ rounding out the
total.
By avenging a previous defeat to Mira
Costa in a best-of-five match at the Santa
Barbara Tournament of Champions, Coach
Dan Glenn's Tars also denied Coach
DaeLea Aldrich's Mustangs their 10th
section title.
Torrance and Bishop Montgomery also
have section crowns to bring the South
aay's ClF hardware haul to 11
championship plaques.
Now, having lost only two role-playing
seniors to graduation, Newport app;ears
loaded for a run at the 1998 crown, not to
mention a crack at the CIF State Division I
it was denied last fall when it dropped a
five-game quarterfinal marathon to
Marina in the state quarterfinals.
Before one looks ahead to next year,
however, last year's championship season
bears revisiting, as Glenn's tall and
talented troops proved they had what it
took to add to the Tars' proud tradition.
The Sailors appeared to rebound well
from some unexpected preseason · ·
· personnel losses, as !pey cruised into the
Sea View League sedson as the favorite
and proceeded to run the table for their
fifth straight league crown.
The playoffs opened with the
No. 2-seeded Tars trouncing Upland, 15-7,
15-5, 15-1, then. burying Ayala, 15-1, 15-2,
15-2.
