. ' • • Parks commission will
· decide whether to enforce
· proposal for 10,000 .. to
: 15,000-square-foot course
· in Bonita Canyon.
JENIFER RACLANO
cuim.s .
NEWPORT BEACH. -In case
· city officials were unaware that
the Harbor View neighborhood is
. opposed to a skateboard course in
the proposed Bonita Canyon
park, residents have sent their
message loud and clear.
Opposition letters, wluch
ranged from three-paged, typed
statements on professional letter-
head to hand-scrawletl pleas from
tha pens of babes, have poured
~to City Hall since the Parks,
Beaches and Recreatibn Commis-
sion approved the idea of a skate-
board course June 3.
Comm.i,ssioners signed off on
the idea of a 10,000-to 15,000-
square-foot course, as long as
noise studies showed the activity
would not disturb nearby resi-
dents. .
The commission is scheduled
to review the revised park plans
at its Tuesday meeting and give
its recommendations to the City
Council, wbJch will make the
final decision.
In response to the commis-
sion's direction iast month, the
city's landscape architecture con-
sultant has prepared a set . of
revised plans for the park, bor •
dered by Bonita Canyon" Drive,
MacArthur Boulevard, San
Miguel Drive and Old Ford ~oad.
Special consid~ration was giy-
en to parking, alternative-activity
facilities and minimizing the size
of the proposed skate_board
course, said Steve Hunt, ~~nior
recreation manager.
The letters sent to City Hall
over the past month ob1ected to a
skateboard course because of its
location next to a quiet, residen-
tial ne~hborhood, the possibility
that it could attract more than 300
people per day, nolse and traffic
concerns. and the "undesirables"
that would be using the facility.
•As a taxpayer, homeowner
and resident of the city I am dis-
pleased, bordering on outrage,
that such a completely irresponsi-
ble pl~ would 'even be under
consideration by the city,• resi-
dent Bruce Larson said.
•I live in Harbor View and I
would really hate to have people l
don't know roaming aroupd, •
Elizabeth Padni wrote. "Big, bad,
mean teenagers will probably
come and I would be very
scared."
Also included in the recent cor-
respondence were two peti~ons
-one opposed to the skateboard
park signed by 65 Harbor View
residents and one opposed to a
parking lot ·on Old Ford Road
signed by 35 residents.
· -But there are people in the aty
wbo strongly support the pro•
posed skateboard course.

The council has two choices for

of town and suffer$ from chronic:
traffic congestion. aging buildings
and other nagging problems.
The improvements -new
stotefronts, signs a.rtd road work -
would be made over several years
with public and private money. But
the first step irl sprucing up the
area is hiring a private firm to eval-
uate the area and make recom-
mendations on how to improve it.
Two finns -EIP Associates of
Los Angeles and Urban Design
Studio of Irvine -have bid on the
job and the council is schequled
today to select one to hire.
Each firm bid around $190,000
for the job and the City Council has
allocated that amount from the last
two general fund budgets to pay
for the plan.

officials said.
In other
action, the City Council is set to
select one of 10 options for splitting
the 714 area code to provide more
telephone numbers for Orange
County.
In May. Cost.a Mesa was left
straddling a new area code, with
the south portion of the city and all
of Newport Beach accepting the
new 949 area code and the north
section keeping the old 714.
But with thousands of new
phone lines, fax machines and
computer modems added every
day, officials now say the 714 area
code will run out of numbers by
early2000.
Several options to create a third
area code for Orange County by
that time are on the table, and city
staff has recommended the council
support two options that leave
north Costa Mesa in the 714 area
code.
The Costa Mesa Chamber of
Commerce and the South Coast
Metro Alliance business group
support the same two options.
Some of the other plans would
put north Costa Mesa in a new,
still-'Unnamed area code.

A SYSTEMATIC
BRAKE INSPECTION
. .
A proper inspection of a j:ar's
braking ystem involves removing the
tire to get a good look at components.
This job should be done annually by a
ccn1fied technician. Aside from
simply inspecting brake linings and
pads for excessive or uneven wear, the
technician will wane to check for
glazing and contamination from brake
Ouid or grease. The Ouid level in the
master cylinder should also be
checked. Brake lines running from the
master cylinder to all four wheels
must be insJlCCted for rust and leaks.
Brake hoses running from brake lines
to che brake calipers and cyHnde~
should al o be checked for cracks and
bnttleness of the rubber seals. Brake
cahpers and wheel cylinders, too,
require inspection for leaks. Only by
carefully checkmg the entire braking
sysccm can drivers be assured that it is
m good ~orkmg order .
HINT: The brake fluid level in the
master C) tinder should be checked
e"ery 5.000 miles .
MAKING THE GRADE
Viscosity index 1s a measure of an
oil's th1clne . ~luch is denoted by
numbers ranging from SW (5-weight)
to 50-W. The higher the number, the

While high-viscosity oils provi~
better lubrication, they find it hard to
circulate through the engine in cold

• BMX dirt jumper Ryan Brennan
among best in world of jumping
despite few places to practice.
JASON HJU.
~Pill
M any people dream about
being able to travel to far off
places around the world,
but most can never find the
meansto$upportsuch
adventures. However, there are those,
often times athletes, who are skilled
enough that th;eir talent dears the way for
such adventures.
Costa Mesa's Ryan Brennan, over the
past year, joined the elite of the BMX dirt
bike jumping commun1ty and earned the
right to travel to competitions in Europe
and Australia, despite the challenges t,hat
come Crom having practice sites that are
always being tom down.
"Without the sport, l would probably
never would have made it to so many
places,• Brennan said. "England was out
of control. It was my virgin trtp and it was
cool because a big posse of Americans
were at the contest." ·
Brennan ·kl"tked off his 1997 world tour
in style at The Backyard Jam Pro Dirt
Jumping Contest in Hastings, England.
Brennan won the event.
One week later, Brennan competed at
the 1997 Freestyle Worlds BMX Dirt
Jumping Contest in Itoben, Holland. He
won there, too.
#I was 19 and just.!having fun,• •
Brennan, now 20, said. "It was a cool deal
because it all happened because of BMX."
In September, he went to Geneva,
Switzerland for the European version of the
Xtreme Ga.mes, an American event put on
by ESPN. Brennan found that very few
Swiss spoke English and it ,was hard to
conununicate. Brennan chose, instead, to
speak with his ability and finished fourth.
Abroad was not the only place that
Brennan had a great deal of success.
Brennan placed 11th at last year's
X-Games and finished fifth in the overall
standings on the DK Dirt Circuit.
Overall Brennan was happy with .his run
last season, but already has goals for this
season and beyond. He's already been to
Australia for the Australian X-Garnes and,
with a second place finish at Coli.unbus,
Ohio, Brennan has a chance to finish
higher on the DK Dirt Circuit this season.
#I would be happr, with finish in the top
3-5," Brennan said. But what I'd really
like is to win the circuit.·
The DK Dirt Circuit is a five-event
circuit that holds events prima, rily on the
East Coast and is one of the prenliere BMX
events in the country. Brennan also joined
the GT Dirt Series this season and finished
third at an event in Reno, Nevada. The
main difference between the two events is
the location. The GT Dirt Series is a
predominantly West Coast organization.
Brennan has also been invited to the
Asian X-Games and recently competed at
the U.S. X-Games, where he qualified for
the tinals, but finished 14th. ·1 could have
done better, but I didn't gamble,· Brennan
said. "Next time, I'll just ride and if 1 eat it,
I eat it.•
Next year, his goal is to finish in the Top
10 at the U.S. event.
Despit.e all his talent, Brennan has one
problem, the same problem that faces BMX
riders across the country, and in particular
ttre locatarea. There: are few places to
practice.
Unlike skateboarders and roller·bladers,
which have been given skate par~ to hone
their skills, dirt bikers must create their
own courses in open fields wherever they
can, then hide them as long as they can
from neighboring commercial and
residential areas, as well as the local law
enforcement.
This is all because there are no

Wi\h amusement, we recall ..
one summer night in l968
when we first met the senator
at a baseball stadium fu
Arizona. We bad been looking
for him 'in the stands with a I camera. Suddenly, we almost
bumped right fato him behind , the. backstop. Ev.en he had to
laugh over the near-collision.
When this comer was .. ,
serying as the last editor pf the •
Tombstone (Ariz.) Epitaph, Goldwat~ and a large TV
entourage dropped by the
building. The senator smiled,
then said, "I heard you were
down here.•
He wanted a tour of the
printing operation for his
companions, so we provided
some illteresting Views.
Befor,e_departing, he said, "I
love ffiiS old paper. Please don't
ever change it" ~ -· -··
No one on the staff had the
heart to tell him that a few
weeks later, the paper
was being suspended
after almost 100 years of
publication. Before
folding, the paper had ,
subscribers in 32 foreign
countries and all 50 states.
With amusement,
despite the rancor for "'
politics, there are some
liberal Democrats who
claimed Goldwater as an
unabashed compadre.
For some years back,
we remember Senator
Ted Kennedy recalling
that he and his brothers ·
John and Robert were
"honored to have him as-
a friend .. .I hope this
doesn't get rum in trput?le
with his other friends, but
we like to think of Barry
Goldwater as a Kennedy
fa.nuly friend.•
Humor wa~ also found
in a communique with an
old political friend who
had invited him to set a
date for a luncheon some
years back.
Goldwater replied, "Every
week, 1 say unto myself, get
there with the gladiators and
enjoy lunch with an assem-
·blage of liars unequaled since
the present occupant of the
ovemor's chair showed up."
He was referring to the
l:ontrovers'ial Evan Mecham.
