Bearue Babies and a slew of fluffy creatures from
bears to lions.
She parted with some of those chenshed pos-
sessions Tuesday when she delivered 200 stuffed
animals to the Costa Mesa Police Department. The
toys will be used for Project Cuddle, a program that
supports children in crisis situations. ..
"l gave up about 15 to 20 of my stuffed aru-
mals," said Dougherty of her personal contnbution.
"It was hard giving them up, but if it helps out lit-
tle kids, then it's worth it.•
ln preparation for her bat mitzvah, a JeWi.sh iru-
tiatory ceremony, ~ugherty had to complete a
commuruty seMce project. When she heard about
Pro1ect Cuddle, she leaped mto action
Doughert) wrote a letter to her Newport Elt>·
mcntary School friends asking for donabons. She
placed collection boxes at the school and \\.'IUun
day ..... to}~ starting pouring m. She also received
new d.Od used stuffed animals on her doorstep.
But that's not all she gave. Dougherty also
rec-enUy donated 16 packages of didpers to Project
Cuddle on behalf or the cornmuruty.
As for the tuffed animals, police and firefighters
carry them m their squad cars and fire trucks when
they respond to a scene. Sometunes the best reme,-
dy for cl ctuld is a toy.
"I t.lunk stuffed animals, to my daughter, per-
sonifies what corruorts children," said Megan's
mother, Betsy Dougherty. "She's a collector. and
she thought there might be kids who don't have
any stuffed animals at all."

tee Monddy night gave a warm
receptlon to a consultant's report
that says certain aspects of the El
Toro Reuse Planning -Authority's
Millenruum Plan are infeasible.
Pam Engebretson, president of
the Newport Beach-based con-
sulting hrm lnterra, said the pre-
sentallon of the report, -the first
of three phases -went well.
About 25 people showed up to
hear results of the anaJysis, which
looked at the public facilities and
attractions in the Millennium
Plan, including a stadium, con-
vention center and large central
park.
"I was there for 45 minutes
after the presentation ·answering
questions,"' she said Tuesday.
·Tuey were pretty much the
believers. I would say they
received it very positively.•

Nonna Glover said she thought
Interra's analysis was very good.
Hit's evident to me that when
we get the airport, we will have to
look carefully at how we use the
rest of the land," Glover said.
"There's pie in the sky and there's

stadium.•
She said one of the more inter-
esting questions she fielded was:
How much would it cost to buy
the land for the public attractions

at Estancia High School, WaJter T.
Smith of Balboa Jsland, died Sun-
day at Hoag HospitaJ in Newport
Beach. He was 81.
Mr. Smith was born July 2,
1917, in Los Angeles and raised
in Pasadena. He attended the
·University of Santa Clara and
played for Buck Shaw's Sugar
Bowl-winning teams irl 1938 and
1939.
Mr. Snuth was a major in Um
Anny during World War 11. After-
ward he returned to Pasadena,
where he coached football, bas-
ketbdl1, walE>r polo and golf at
John Muir High School. J le later
assumed the role of vice principal
there.
Dr. David Kagnoff
Students returning from col-
lege visited him-for their annuaJ
checkups. Young children sbictly
obeyed his words as the doctor's
orders. New mothers found
solace in his wisdom, commit-
ment and reliability.
But those who came to promi-
nent Newport Beach pediatncian
Dr. David Kagnoff for his devot~d
treatment and attention today
find themselves without a trusted
friend and doctor.
After suffering a ma1or ·heart
attack two weeks ago, Kagnoff
died Sunday wtu.le on an extend-.
ed vacation in Maui, 1 Jawatl, with
his wife, Susan. He was 61.
In 1965, Dr. Kagnoff moved to·
Newport Beach and began his
practice two years later. He was
the first. physician to rent space in
Newport Center.
In addition to building a prac-·
tice that now treats a second gen-
eration o( patients, Dr. Kagnoff
twice served as chief of ped.iabic5
at Hoag Hospital.
He helped found Temple Bat
YahJn in Newport Beach and was
a co-founder of Citizens Thrift
and Loan in Irvine.
Today he is remembered for
both the qualJty of his 31 years m
medicine and the quality of his
life.

After retiring from that post in
1978, Mr. Smith moved to his BaJ-
boa Island summer home. He vol-
unteered at Estancia as a walk-on
goll coach. .
Survivors are his wife of 54
yeais, Agnes; daughters Carol
Snutb of Laguna Niguel, Betsy
Srruth of Huntington Beach and
Jeanette Gaviglio of B~nd, Ore.; a
son, Tom Snuth or BaJboa; and
se·ven grandcluJdren.
The eight-week trip was
irltended to give Dr. Kagnoff a
break from his thriving practice in
Newport Center, twice ,a day
rounds at Hoag Hospital and
round-the-dock phone calls from
worried parents.
•His compassion fol' his
patients, friends and colleagues
was unmatched," said his daugh-
ter, Alisb Frederick. "He was the
most unselfish man I have ever

from work Monday night and
found a car in her garage. How-

A 54-yedr-old Costa Mesa man
lost control of his car and plowed

the 200 block of Loyola Road
about 6 p.m. Heading north-
bound on Fairview Road, the
man's 1986 Oldsmobile station

struck the curb. Authorities said

"The first day back to work
and this sort of thing happens,"
Ramsey said Tuesday morning.
"I'm just glad no one was hurt.
Ramsey lives with her daugh-
ter, Teri, who usually parks her
new Honda Accord in the garage.
Fortunately, Teri Ramsey was
having her car repaired at the
tune of the accident.
The Oldsmobile reportedly hit
the front right side of the attached
garage: Firefighters had to
replace a foundation pillar
because the structure had been
severely damaged.
The car1mocked several bowl·
ing balls across the roo·m and also
dented a washer and dryer. :rhe
appliances were thrust into a

The boyfnend of a woman who
was strdngled to death m a Costa

"He saved all three of my kid's,
like he saved all of Newport
Beach,• said Peggy Rich, a close
friend of 27 years and mother or
three grown children.

won. There was just one hitch in
this plan: Carol was deathly
afraid of flying and hadn't been
in an airplane for more than eight
years. And given time constric·
tions, there was no other way she
could make it to Philadelphia.
All those years, Carol had
adroitly avoided situations in
which there was no alternative to
flying. She says there is no cata-
clysmic reason for this fear. She
had several of what she consid·
ered close escapes, but they did·
n't precipitate her decision. She
just got off a plane one day after
agonizing -as always -.
through a flight and decided her
flying days had ended.
"I knew," she recalls, "that fly-
mg wasn't safe, and I was the
only person who really Jmew
that."
She recogniZed the career
problems th.is might cause and
sought help from a psychologist
who speciali.Zed in such matters,
but it didn't lake. So.she
scrubbed flying.

So she started opening doors.
She had a friend whose husband
was a recently retired airline
pilot, and instead of ridiculing her
fear, he sympathized with it. So
Tom Blair took her to the airport
and walked her through a parked
·airUner. Meanwhile, heeding the
psychologist's advice that "you
need information and a support
system to take control instead of
just being a victim," she·wrote a
letter to the chairman of the
board (with a copy to'the vice-
president of marketing) of USAir, _
the airllne on ,,.,hich she and Ken-
ny Carmichael were ticketed.

swim program. When the Harbor View
development was created, Bandaruk was
lured to do age group swimming.
-Bandaruk built a dynasty and Harbor
View won 17 consecutive league titles.
There are now more than 300 youngsters
on the learn this season and they are very
competitive with their sister team, which is
made up of youth from the Phase Il area of
the Harbor View development.

before high school because he
was too big to slip under youth

was all right with it, because I

.golf championship which has pro-
,duced a U.S. Open wfnner and ;this year's Masters champion, is
•scheduled to host its ~6th annual
:event Aug. 1-2 at Costa Mesa
'Golf and Country Club.
The championship has a
,$10,000 purse (based on 320
entries) that will be divided
'among the five Oight winners,
including a senior flight.
The defending champion in
the featured championship Oight
is Bob Valerio, who shot 1-over-
par 142 for 36 holes last year cov-
ering the Mesa Linda (par 70) and
Los Lagos (72) courses.
Scott Simpson (1974 Costa
Mesa city champion), who won
the 1987 U.S. Open. and Mark
O'Meara (1979), this year's win-
ner on the hallowed grounds at
Augusta, are two fonner Will Jor-
dan Classic champions who went
on to enjoy success on the PCA
Tour. The event is named after
the city's former mayor.
Last year, Valerio edged a trio
of contenders by one stroke.
Gabriel Armanderez, Andrew
Nelson and Kenneth Wertzberger
each carded a 142, even par.
In the senior division, Ron
Cowan fired a 151 to best John
