' The Sid Soffer in Las Vegas is
probably the real Fred Martin
who, I theorize, has grown weary
of playing the fugitive and has
decided to pull the plug on this
cabal. That leaves Soffer vulnera-

Of course, 1 have no proof of
this. But what other plausible pos-

I can't imagine.

find comfort in the knowledge he
won't be flying the plane. Had he,
given his dull acumen for basic

Stanford 9 shows bilingual edu-

English immersion anyone?
Although it carries a name that
sounds more like a wrderground
political group than a battex:y of

skills, the Stanford 9 test results
turned in by Newport-Mesa prep
students underscore bilingual
education's failure in preparing
limited-English students for the
rigors of a secondary education.
Consider the disparity of scores
between Corona del Mar High

Corona del Mar, where less than ·

60th percentile on average. On
the flip side, Estancia (where 40%
of the student population is limit-

dismal Stanford 9 reading scores

With disparate numbers like
these, what's to be said for bllin-

COSTA MESA -It wasn't long after
being named South coach for the 39tb

that Myron Miller began doing the math.
Off the top of his head, he envisioned a
dream backfield of bis own Tustin High
standout DeShaun Foster, Laguna Hills'
Mike Jones and Mdter Dei's Mike
McNau.
And, w1lh th~ UCLA-bound Foster
having rushed for a county single-season
record 3,398 yards last fall, Jones adding
2,684 to his county career record of 7,190,
and future Notre Dame star McNair com-
piling 2,678 in his swan-song as a prep,
the numbers were truly scary .
But McNair, a Corona dcl Mar resi-
dent, opted to play in another all-star
game and Jones, ulitially named
to the squad, never surfaced after
taking a senior trip.
So, instead of the dream back-
field, which combined to rush for
nearly five miles last fall, Miller
will have to setUe for the dream
back (Foster), when his South
squad takes on the North tonight
at 7:15 at Orange Coast College.

also be within reach, despite a recent
trend of defensive dominance. The North
