• When Misty Mallory of
Newport Beach graduated from
Orange Coast College Thursday
evening, she was following in
the footsteps of quite a few
members of her faniily.'
Misty, 20, represented the
third generation of OCC gradu-
ates in her family.
Her father, Lee Mallory, and
mother, Adell Pa tterson, were
both 1964 graduates of the com-
munity college in Costa Mesa.
And in 1952, Misty's grand-
mother, the late Elsie Starck
Panerson, was a proud Pirate
graduate too.

: called "Great Debate" was a
resounding success which
accomplished its mission: show-
casing the skills and talents of
our Newport Harbor High
School S~ech and Debate
Team.
These students use their
tree time to develop skills in
using facts. logic. and persua-
sive speech to advance anti
defend an argument.
Team members Anna Vrska,
Heather Jordan, Michael Hoev-
el, and Juliet Hover faced oft
against Costa Mesa Mayor

surer and Tax Collector but not
spender "Wild Man• John
Moorlach,
Newport-Mesa Unified
School District President "You
May Not Graduate" Jim de
Boom, and yours (I do not
assign myself a silly aside) truly.
The debate was moderated
by Corona Del Mar community
activist and lawyer Bany Allen.
The judges were Daily Pilot
Editor Bill Lobdell and Coast
Magazine Managing Editor
Justine Kaplan. Team coaches
Gregg Schwenk and Mark
"fygart advised of the rules
(maintain a high degree of civil-
ity). To no avail, we politicians
uttered protest on that point;
they should have told us before
then.
The debate topic was
Resolved: American high
schools should adopt a manda-
tory school Wl.iform policy. The
politicians won the coin to4s,
and rather than choosing which
side to argue, used a brilliant
psychological ploy conceived
by Wild Man Moorlach: we
gave the choice over to the
Team.
They chose the negative, so
it was up lo us lo make the
argument that school Wl.iforms
are truth, justice, and the Amer-
ican way.
I suspect that the politicians
may have had some advan-
tages The assiduous reference
librarians at the Newport Beach·
Public Library gathered for us a

and her fine staff.
Wild Man Moorlach came
prepared with complete out-
lined arguments for both sides.
fie must live and breathe this
stuff, (or perhaps county gov-
ernment has induced an undi-
agnosed infirmity) because after
the debate concluded, he pro-
posed that the teams swap posi-
tions and argue the opposite
view. The man just couldn't get
enough.
Wild Man opened the debate
with the affirmative argument.
He was amazing. No wonder
he got more votes than Bob
Dole in the primary election.
Man of the Century Erickson
was shameless in bis use of
dark glasses, a shower curtain
hoop for an eaning, and a ban-
danna he donned to make the
point that some kids have little
pride in their personal appear-
ance.
Well, actually it was
designed to rattle our oppo-
nents. It should rattle the citi-
zens of Costa Mesa. Has any-
one seen the Man of the Centu-
ry during bis off time?
You May Not Graduate de
Boom had reams of staff work
and arguments recorded from
when the School Board took up
the very topic. De Boom ren-
dered a brilliant rebuttal which
nearly had me convinced that
uniforms are the way to go. His
reminder to the students that .
they still had graduation before
them may have helped our
squad.
And I? Because of a near-
total lack of preparation, I aoss-
eumtned and was reduced to
trying to find holes in the argu-
ments of a very well-prepared
student team. Cutting up some-
one else's argument just seems
so much more fun than con-
structing your own.
The students performed
magnificently under the beat
and pressure of kleig lights,
television cameras, peers, par-
ents, elected officials, newspa-
per and magazine editors, and
the formal and foreign setting
of the Newport Beach City
Council chambers. The Team
obviously had spent much time
studying and preparing, and
spoke eloquently. If there were
any nervousness on their part, it
didn't show.
As Judge Lobdell articulated,
the politicians bumbled around
with the arguments, but nar-
rowly prevailed. That's just
business as usual, I guess ... the
bumbling, that is.
All hands had a fabulous
time, and it was a super experi-
ence. Let's call this one the First
Annual.
While it's too bad that
Speech and Debate is not
offered as an elective course by
the district (rather, the state and
federal governments require
education dollars be spent on
teaching children how to dress
a banana in a condom), it is
laudable that people like
Schwenck and 'fygart volunteer
to teach our young people to
express, themselves in a cogent
and organized manner.
One last thing: the Team is
supported only by volunteers
~d charitable contributions.
You may make donations to the
Team by contacting the school
district.
The money is spent on trips,
entry fees, mat~als, and the
like.
The payoff from such contri-
butions is tremendous as the
resources are directed toward
those who better themselves
and society by learning and
contributing.

•A clipping of your article
about Collins Island was sent to
me by a friend who lives down
there. I thought the following
might be of some interest to you.
"When I was a young child
living in an ordinary, but nice,
neighborhood in Denver, we
had a neighbor who talked a
great deal about two daughters
from a previous marriage who
bad both married and lived in
California: Lena and Geneve.
"Each summer they would
come together to Denver for a
fairly long visit so the neighbors
got to know them a bit, especial-
ly me, as we lived on the comer
where the street car stopped
and they would go downtown,
dressed better than anyone bad
ever seen, and come home with
packages from the best stores.
"One time Lena brought pic-
tures of the place where she
lived: There were pictures of her
taken in front of her home, a
gigantic house surrounded by
palm trees and wide lawns, and
she told us it was on an island in
a bay on the California coast,
and that it was their very own
island. My mother assumed it
was all a big lie, though Lena
surely appeared to be a lady.
"I should point out that the
mother was called "Appy• by
her family. The assumption was
that was short for something but
no one asked about her name.
Also, the dates here are the very
early '20s. I remember very well
Lena's teasing me about my
missing front teeth at age six.
She meant well but it did hurt
my feelings. (I am now 80.)
•When the mother died, of
course, we saw no more of
Geneva and Lena until probably
20 years later when we moved
to California and rented a place
not far from where Geneva and
her husband lived in L.A. They
bad a nice floor-through flat but
.certainly not a large home. My
mother and I visited them one
\
On the street wh ere she lived ...
evening (and later on several
occasions over a year or two).
"Now here comes my point:
Lena had moved in with them.
She appeared to be a tired old
lady, very bitter about the fact
that she did not have a home of
her own, and she was doing
bab'f sitting in order to have a
few dollars independently. I
believe she died not long after
that time. What a sad ending.
"Lena had never wanted, or
bad, children. She just wasn't
the type, so it seemed almost
ludicrous that she would be a
baby-sitter, especially at an
advanced age. t
I
"Some few years later, I
myself began spending time in
Newport and mainly Corona del
Mar, and got around the area
quite a lot. I remember seeing
the • Apolena • street sign on the
Island and thought it was·
strange as related to the other
street names.
•Running around the bay in
rented motorboats I would see
the big "Cagney" house but still
no bells rang until eventually
(probably through articles like
yours, which have appeared
over the years) I came to realize
that the mother's • Appy • was
MARC MARTIN I DAILY P1LOT
undoubtedly short for Apolena
and that •Lena•· had been
named after her mother, and
that our ·Lena" was Apolena
Collins.
"There is no need for me to·
identify myself. I just thought
you might want to know about
Lena's last years. No one ever
meotioned Collins himself so
who knows? ·
"In looking carefully at yom
dates I see date discrepancies. I .
was born in 1916 and, of course,
would have been six in 1922
and I am positive in my memory
of Lena at that time. She had
probably been visiting Denver
for some years before that -but
if she had not lived on the p1b·
vale island ·since 1914 obviously :
she was not living there at t.Qe:
time I very clearly remember·
her showing us the pictures. ·
"Maybe someone was telling
a little fib? I rememb~r my
mother's quoting Lena: If when :
she was dressing, she noticed-a·
run in her silk stocking slie;
would wear it anyway and just:
pretend that it just happened if
anyone saw it.
•so maybe Lena was show:
ing pictures of where she hGd-
lived."

Miller was one of tbe 400 cancer
survivors who attended the
eighth annual celebration with
their friends and families in honor
of National Cancer Survivor's
Day.
MThis became home away from
home, this cancer center," said
Miller, wh o lost his blond hair and
20 pounds during his treatment
but still continued to turf. •1 was

chemotherapy. All thele people
took the best care of me."
•it's a cool relationship,• said
Miller of the bond formed
between himself and his physi-
cian, Dr. Warren Pong, who greet-
ed him Sunday with a giant smile
and hearty handshake. •Jt's all
about keeping me alive.•
Out of 6,296 patients diag-
nosed with cancer at Hoag's can-
cer Center from 1986 to 1991, the
survival rate was 63%, five points
higher than the national average
of 58%, according to the hospital's
latest five-year study released in a
statement Friday.
The cancer center's success is
attributed to three core factors:
earlieT diagnolil, determining the
extent ol the cancer at the time of
dlagnolil and aggressive early
treatment, especially chemother-
apy which works with radiation,
according to the statement.
Months of chemotherapy
killed most of Miller's tumors, he
said, adding that the next step is
radiation to annihilate any trace
of the dise~. Then in the fall,
Miller plans to resume his college
education at Santa Cruz. But he
will go back as a changed person.
"It's definitely a rebirth. Every-
day you seize it because it could

WHEN A WARNING
COMES TO LIGHT .
When the red brake warning
light flashes on the instrument
panel, some drivers may doubt
that they have a problem
because their brakes either feel
normal or there is only a sligtit
difference in brake pedal feel.
The fact is, however, that the r&d
warning light may be indicatin~ a
serious problem while the braking
system remains larQely functional
for the time being. This is
because modern cars are
equipped with a dual braking
system. There is a separate
hydraulic system for the f ron\
brakes and another for the rear
brakes. The split may aJso be
between one front wheel and its
diagonal rear-wheel counterpart
and the other two wheels.
Regard~ss of how the split is
configured, when a brake-fluid
leak occurs and there is a drop in
brake-fluid pressure when
braking, a valve will shut off half
the brake sys tem. The red
warning light then flash~.
signaling that the problem should
be addressed immediately
because total brake failure could
be just around the comer.
HINT: The brake warning light
might also come on because the
rear brakes are in need of
adjustment.
WHAT'S THAT
KNOCKING?
A gasoline's octane number is
a measure of its resistance to the
condition popularly known as
•knocking." This metallic rattling
sound emanating from the
engine is usually heard under
hard acceleration or hill-climbing
and is caused by uncontrolled
burning of the air/fuel mixture.
Under normal conditions, this
air/fuel mixture Is i9nited by a
spark in the combustion chamber
at a precise time in the engine
cycle. When heat in the com-
bustion chamber becomes too
high, the mixture can Ignite
spontaneously, independent of
the spark plug. This uncontrolled
burning produces pressure
changes and shock waves that
can spell trouble. If loud knocking
persists when the accelerator is
not depressed, it is a serious
condition that should be
Investigated.

t's clear a bigger draw is

So here's a thought from Ken
tuart, owner of the Palisades
ennis Club, who was seeded
o. 1 in the men's 50s with
obyn Ray. (Stuart and Ray
ominated in the division,
· · g the inaugural title by

Stuart has suggested to
doption Guild committee
bers that next year's draw
elude 45s, 55s and 65s. There
been a 35s draw since 1993.
The reason for that is to take in
lot of players," Stuart said.
Block-seed the top-four players,
en let everybody else play for
arterlinals spots. There were
,200 players in 1988, and this
ear there were 410."
There are 19 Grand Prix
ents in Orange County
ougbout the year, according to
tuart, and the Adoption Guild
eeds to become •special" for
yers in order to make the
umament more attractive.
Another Stuart suggestion is
make contact with every bead

unty has 23 clubs) and
ropose a points system, giving a
ub five pdints for every
ember entered in the touma-

According to past Adoption
Guild President Wynn Griffith,
the tennis tournament hasn't
raised its $100 entry fee ($50 per
player) in "four or five years,
because of the economy."
0
Among the greatest reliefs for
Adoption Guild XXXV was the

years, according to Newport

"Someone found a nice

Once again, the Adoption

event, \lltimately helping to raise
between $80,000 and $90,000 for

tournament's beneficiary.
The tournament raised
$86,000 last year and has raised
in excess of $2.5 million in the 35
years, according to tournament
co-directors Donna Davison and
Linda McClain.
There are several different
areas of involvement for the
Adoption Guild ladies, including
trophies, programs, fund-raisers
and parties.
"Donna Davison and Linda
McClain are the hardest working

a spade fit has been found. Since a
jump to three spades wouJd not be
