Too good/or
the Daily Pilot?
R kit~~. the 1980s
heartthrob who's band
played at the Orange
County Pair this weekend, ls
apparent-
ly too
good to
be inter-
viewed
by the
O.lty
Piiot.
You
would
think
reporter&
and editors for the Pilot's enter~
tainment section were trying to
score an interview. With Michael
Jackson the way Springfield's
publicity people avoided them
and gave ~em the run-around
for months 'before the story was
supposed to run.
Finally, the entertainment edi-
tor spoke directly with Spring-
field's pu blicist, who gave the
excuse that the celebrity •has to
save his voice• because he's on
tour.
The Daily Pilot came to find
out later that Springfield, known
for his one-time hit, •Jesse's
Girl,• had granted an interview
with Pasadena-based radio sta-
tion KROQ.
We guess he felt the local
paper wasn't worthy of his fame.
REWARD OFFERED FOR LOST
NOTEBOOK: If you were in the
vicinity of the Spin Out carnival
ride at the Orange County Fair
around noon on Friday, you may
have seen an .important note-
book flying through the air.
The pad in question belonged
to Daily Pilot reporter Tim Gren-
da. who was on the new thrill-
ride for a story he was doing on
the best and worst of the fair's
,Midway.
When be got on the ride, the
narrow pad of paper clearly
labeled •Professional Reporter's
Notebook• was snugly tucked
into Grenda's back pock.et.
But after two minutes of twist-
ing and turning, the pad was
gone and was never seen again.
With a reporter's salary being
what it ls, a large financial
reward is not at stake. But if the
notepad is returned to the Daily
Pilot offices at 330 W. Bay Street,
Grenda promises to furnish
something of value in return.
WATERED DOWN
INTRODUCTION: Attempted
time-saving measures by Costa
Mesa Mayor Peter Buffa may
leave him high and dry. At the
35th Annual Public Safety
Awards Luncheon Mi Friday,
Buffa requested •thunderous
applause," when introducing
city councilwomen Heather
Somers and Libby Cowan and
County Supervisor Jim Silva.
But after the three •who ..

duced, to save time, Buffa said
he wanted tlie banquet atten-
dees te clap once when he intro-
duced the remaining local offi-
cials.
All seemed fine until Mesa
Consolidated Water Board Mem-
ber lhldy Ohlig-Hall rec£ved
the one-dep ovation.
She stood up and threatened,
•t only get one clap. I'll tum

COSTA MESA -Plans to
offer flamenco dancing at a
Cuban restaurant and allow a
motel to rent more of its rooms to
long-term tenants than city law
permits will be heard Monday
night by the Planning Commis-
sion.
The commission is set to con-
sider a request by Habana
Restaurant in tbe Lab Anti-Mall
on Bristol Street to expand its cur-
rent live entertainment line-up by
offering traditional Latin dancing
on a permanent basis,
The restaurant already oUers
live amplified music played by a
jazz. trio and performances by
male and fem ale flamenco
dancers on special occasions.
The owners now want to have
dancing on a more permanent
basis, every Wednesday through

City staff
has deter-
mined that .
since no
complaints
have come
in about the
tapping
feet or gui-
tars during
the previ-
ous danc-
ing performances, making it a
permanent attraction should not
be a problem. ·
•The flamenco performances
will occur only inside the restau-
rant ... therefore staff does not
anticipate any impacts,• said a
city staff report.
ln other action, the commission
is set to consider a request from
the Sandpiper Motel located on
Newport Boulevard to rent more
than 25% of its rooms to long-
term occupants.
ln an effort to discourage peo-
ple from using low-rent motels as
permanent homes, the city earlier
this year passed a law that
requires motels to rent no more
than 25% of their rooms to people
who stay for 28 consecutive day9'.
The owners of the Sandpiper
are the first to ask for permission
to exceed the new city standard
and city staff has recommenqed
approving the request as long as
the motel meets certain condi-
tions.
In order to receive permission,
the motel must provide more
parking and landsca.ping on the
property, repaint portions of the
buildings, install security lighting
and build an outdoor patio where
a trailer now sits. •

Prom the security of my
kitchen or family room, I can
watch and read about the chaos
all around me and feel safely dis-
tanced from the tray.
The news media, by its own
deslgn, has become something of
a spectator sport. I have sat glued
in front of the television dwing
the Clarence Thomas hearings,
the Los ft..,ngeles fires, state funer-
als and foreign wars. l have fol·
lowed with great interest the sala-
cious details of White House indis-
cretions and Hollywood mur(iers.
l have lingered long enough In
front of the tabloids at the check-
out counter to absorb headlines of
hideotls behavior. And while the .
horror and sadness and dread I
may feel at the moment seems
real, by the time I sit down to din-
ner and look around the table at
my husband and sons, the emo-

•Jim,• J commented to my hus-
band, •rm beginning to think
these people we read about in the
Daily Pilot are actually real.•
"They always were," he
replied.
Jim sets me straight about
things.
A local paper is no place for
spectators. I applaud those of you
who understand the chstinction
and take the time to write letters
and voice opinions and read this
paper cover to cover. The people
we see on the front page, for bet-
ter or worse, aren't them. They're
us. ' '
A local paper ~·t printed as a
thrill nde for voyeurs. I need to
remember that; so do editors.
It's like I told my boys wben
they discovered our Edison man
dead from a heart attack on our
neighbor's front lawn, "He many
have just been the Edison man to
us, but at home he's somebody's
dad and somebody's neighbor and
somebody's friend. And his death
will be very real to them.~
So, now I drive through the '
mini Pro-Wash on the comer of
Newport Boulevard and 19th
Street to get.my kicks and clean
my car. It's a short, efficient
process, not the big thrill I once
enjoyed as a kid in my dad's Elec-
tra.
But then, I'm not as young as I
used to be either.

Newport took an 2-0 lead in
the second irutlng when Encinias
