To use a thesaurus ort every single sentence like you did is un- necessary. I didn't like it at all, and your views ·on bilingual education show how ignorant you really are on that subject, and you should probably stay away from it. GEORGE LAMPINEN Newport Beach Readers support reduced class sizes Both of my children go to Newport Heights Elementary, and I am very much in favor of the reduced class sizes in the upper grades ("State may reduce more class sizes," July 10). My son is getting the benefit of being in a reduced-size class. He is in first grade this year, so he will be in small classes in first, second and third grades. The difference in the quality of education in a class of 18 vs. a . class of 35 is unquestionable. He has loved first grade in a smaller classroom, and J believe the atten· tion to the reduced number of stu· dents has a tremendous positive impact on the quality of education, MAILBAG and I totally support the reduced class sizes in the upper grades. My daughter is in the sixth grade, where teachers have 90 kids to handle. I've heard noth- ing but complaints from many parents and teachers about the amount of kids in those classes and about the difficulty and chal- lenge of teaching that many kids the critical skills that are needed to be successful in life. CORILEE NEWMAN Newport Beach Any class-s12e reduction is beneficial and appr~ciated by parents, students and teachers. Perhaps reducing to 20 students per class was going overboard. How about limiting all K-12 classes to 24? HELEN MCFARLAND Corona del Mar I noticed that Principal Don Martin of Corona del Mar doesn't seem to think reducing the size of eighth· through 10th-grade class· es makes sense. He quotes research to support this and said it doesn't seem to make a differ- ence in the quality of education. WENDY~ Member, Newport-Mesa school board Costa Me:s\ a classroom. There is no way you can tell me the quality of instruc· lion for 35 kids in a language- arts classroom is going to be the same as having 20 or 25. lo classes I have had over the years that have fewer students, there is a marked d.iff erence in what a teacher can do, based on the fact that the teacher doesn't have a large number of students to deal with. The typical junior high school teacher has between 150 and 200 students in various classes during the day. If you want to assign an essay for a student to write, it is going to take a long time for you to review all of those papers and adequately correct them. There is no way you can tell me that having smaller classes and dealing with fewer students doesn't give you more opportuni- ty to assign more things for them to write, giving them more writ- ing experience and allowing the teacher more time to correct the papers. That right there is going to make one of the biggest differ- ences in teaching the~ how to wrtte and getting the m to reason. But when you are correcting 200 papers a day, there is no way you can give any of them that much attention. I mean, it ls a no·brainer, and why people keep .. arguing about this is beyond mi. I realize money is a factor, and' the money has to be found to sup- port these programs. But wheh · people question whether larger -: class sizes make a difference, it • just goes to show that these peo-· ple are not in the classroom and haven't been for years. So D~y began to check with all the P.Ontiac dealen in Orange ~_aunty for car sales from that date on. It was long, slow, tediou.s,work. The thing that bqµtered a lot . of people was the bt.d that Mytord moved arpund so much while killing hi.n\Self. It's amazing how much a per!ion who is brain- dead can move. I remember an investigation I did while in the Office of Naval lntelligenc,e. A ~ailor Cell 50 feet through a hatcb and lande(i on his head. His brain was mush, but somehow be crawled almost 100 feet to the spot-where his body was found. Don't ask me why people do it, but they do. So Myfordmoved'around a I lot. Well, let's face it. It was a very sloppy suicide. He shot him· self in the chest twice with a 20- gauge shotgun. 11 he hlld used a 12-gauge it proba bly would, have done the job with one shot. How- ever, the 20-gauge didn't do the job so Myf ord, dying; crawled around the room until he found a .22-caliber pistol. He did the job right this time by shooting him- self in the head. All that stuff about Myf ord being murdered because he was indebted to gangsters is pure garb&ge. I The bidding: SOU11I WFST NORTH EAST li.:? Pus lNI' ..... l• Pus lNT ..... ""' Pus ,.. ,.. Opening lead: Two of 1:1 Trump Coup Tommy celebrited Bastille Day the w11y he liked to enjoy holidays -by bringing home an 'impossible' contrael after trum~ broke badly. Tommr, is a player with a unique flair -while at besl an ordi- nary player, he became ttansfonned into a giant of the game when faced with a poor trump distribution. From a distributional point of view, Tommy's hand almost was worth' a reverse bid. and we will freely admit that it is difficuh to bid the hand any other way. His jump to four heans • however, was something of an ovt:r- bid when partner showed minor-suit length and strength. Apinst the heart &amt. We)t found the bw opcnina lei.d of a low hean, and :rommy capcUred East's nine with the 1Un1. Declarer crossed to the ace • of spades. returned to hand with a di~ ' 'mond ruff'. to cash the king of spades, > then -fUffcd a spade with dummy's rem:uning trump. A di:imond ruff shortened declarer's trumps 10 the Slime len&th as East's. and Tommy e1uted with a spade to West's q~~n as .Enst discarded a club. ~, West could do no better than ~on· cinue with a diamond. and Tommy ruffed to bnng his trick total to seven. Now he e11ited with ace of clubs and another. That was the final nail in the defenders' coffin . lf&st ruffed and returned a crump. Tommy would win and force out East's l3$t trump with the good spade. and the eiah1 of ~ would be the fulfilling trick., So East discarded the ace of diamonds. When East ruffed the club rerum . with the jack of crumps co prcvenl declarer from scor· Ing a low trump, Tommy simply dis- carded his good spade, and A 8 of hearts over Ease's Q 7 had to score the last two cricks.
