He didn't worry about whether it was beneath him to share a bunk with the local livestock in the university sheep farm. He was grateful that the few agricul- tural chores he did earned him a somewhat dry place to sleep his freshman year. He didn't mind digging ditches for pock- et money or washing dishes for food. And Jim never paid much attention to the unusual fact that he had only one eye. After all, he had lived with only one eye since "that acci- dent• when he was six years old . At Davis, he was doing what he loved to do: going to school and playing sports. He lettered m baseball and foot- ball and gamed a name for himself as an Intramural Box- mg Champ. When one of his friends suggested to Jim that he might quality for some room and board scholarship award mon- ey m light of his "eye" handi- cap, Jim replied "what handi- cap?" Inspired by the extraordi- nary effort and grit which characterized Jim's successful college career, his closest friends secretly campaigned for decades to secure Jim a permanent place in their school's record books. And now, after 50 years, their goal will be realized . Jim Anderson's name will henceforth be regarded by stu- dents and alumni as a stan- dard for excellen ce and effort m the UC DaVlS Athletic Archives. I don't think Uncle Jim's · mstallment mto his alma mater's Hall of Fame tomorrow will change the way he thinks about hunself. But it will speak well for what the world thinks of him. • PEGGY NORMANDIN is a Costa Mesa resident. By Julie Ross Cannon, Daily Pilot COSTA MESA -The Coast C ommunity C ollege District teachers union has filed an unfair labor practice charge dgdinst college administrators, who they say intentionally deceived union members du.ring last year's contract negotiations. Teachers agreed to a 3% pay raise m December after more than IO months of intense contract negotiabons. The teachers had sought a S'Yo increase, while dis- tnct officials were offering 1.5%. But now the teachers union president says the educators dropped theu onginaJ demands dnd setUed for'3% because of an orgdn.12ed administrative *cam- pdign" of misinformation and 1nt1nuclation. "At U1e lime the y we re nego- t1dtmy with our bargaining unit, {odmintslrators) went outside 1 the negotiations and dealt directl y with employees and employees groups," said Tma Bru ning, president of the Coast foedcfd llon of Teachers. The adminjstrators provided th(' employees -some of whom •naey would lave to wln an uialalr labor practlce rul- ing agalnBt u8 . .. • -GENE FARRELL • were involved with the negotia- tions -with "inaccurate and misleading" information that cause them to question the union's negotiating strategy, Bruning said. As a result, the union dropped its demands because Bruning wasn't sure she could maintain support for an impasse. But Gene Farrell, the district's vice chancellor for administra- tive services, said all the infor- mation he provided employees was accurate. He called the com- plaint a "common union tactic" and pre-election #posturing." #What they would like, in my opinion, is they would love to win an unfair labor practice rul· ing against us. Then they are free to go out and say whatever they want. We would be limited in what we could say, we could never respond to any claims they make," Farrell said. "We've let them print a lot of information in their weekly - newsletters that is not correct, but we never dispute the c:laims. Hey, that's just how business is done," he said. •aut for once, we went out and said (to the teachers), 'You have to hear this from our perspective.'" Farrell said the charge is "not a big deal" and the district receives dozens of them. But Bruning disagreed. #It's a serious issue when they break the law, and that's what they've done," she said, adding that this is the first unfair labor complaint she bas filed in ber three years as union president. The next step is for a board agent to review the charge, which coul(I be dismissed. But even if th~.lharge is directed to a hearing officer, who finds in favor of the union, the penalty is noth- ing more than a slap on the wrist. "I wish the penalties were more, but if the public employ- ees relations board finds in the union's favor, the district would have to issue a document stating what they've done and post it in all district offices,• Bruning said. · Panell sa.\d the union's intent could be as simple as gaining ammunition for the upcoming November election in which three trustee seats are up for reelection. The union already alluded to pos- sibly providing a contender. "The only thing that's timely about this is the election,• he said. Kiss won the hammer throw with a toss of 265-3 -the world's best effort this year. Another teammate, sprinter Ato Boldon, won the 100 in 9.92 -also the world's fastest time and just .1 of a second off the collegiate record. His shot put buddies include Mark Parlin, who won the Pac-10 crown two weeks ago and John Ogden, who was a recent NFL first-round draft choice. By Barry Faulk11er, Daily Pilot CORONA DEL MAR -Garth flint, the Corona del Mar High girls basketball coach the last sev- en years, will step down for one season to watch his daughter Mollie close out her basketball career at St. Mary's College. CdM Athle tic Dlrector Jeny Jel- nick said the school has begun searching for a coach for the 1996-97 campaign, but would want to rehire Flint for the follow- ing season. "We would like him to come back ," Jeinick said. "He has expressed to us he'd like to take a year off and come back, so we're looking for a one-year coach at this point. We plan to (solicit applicants) until June 14, and we plan to make a decision by June 20. Flint, a walk-on who became head coach for Mollie's freshman season at CdM, compiled a 77-97 record, if Ju ding a 17 -1 o mark last season. The Sea Kings have made four trips to the CIF Southern Section Playoffs dUiing Flint's tenure, posting the school's first postsea- son victories since the 1982-83 CIF championship team during the TV-AA playoffs in 1994-95. The Sea Kings opened last season 13-2, their best start in more than a decade, but lost to Irvine in the · regular season finale, 54-53, with third place and the Sea View League's final guaranteed CIF Playoff spot on the line. CdM. ranked as high as No. 2 in Southern Section Division ID-A, gained an at-large playoff berth, but lost in the opening round at Azusa, 52-37. "Next year is going to be Mollie's last year, and I just wanted to see her play," Flint explained. By Richard Dunn, Da1/y Pilot CORONA DEL MAR -Kevin Stuart of Corona del Mar High, selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 32nd round in this week's Major League Baseball free-agent draft, is a rather interesting choice. While Stuart has limited bargaining power with his late-round selection and has no four-year college scholarship wait- ing in the wings, he could be ready to physically blossom within a year and become an even hotter commodity with the ability to consistently hit the long ball. Stuart, who plans to attend either Orange Coast College or Golden West next year, believes be will become a pre- ferred prospect in the future, once he decides to start liftiilg weights. Stuart. 6-foot-6, 224 pounds, does not lift weights now. He lea.med of bis selection by the Mariners as a first bas~man late Wednes- day night. Frank Mattox, a cross checker for the Mariners, confirmed the round in which Stuart was taken on Thwsday from Seattle. Stuart, believed to be the first CdM player drafted out of high school since Jeff Pries in 1981, was chosen by Craig Weissmann, the Seattle scout who fol- lowed Stuart this year with the Sea Kings and was ultimately responsible for his selection. •(Weissmann) said there was a good possibility (the Mariners) would sign me this summer,• Stuart said, •but I told him I won't sign, because I want to prove him wrong. He told me I would- n't be worth a lot of money, so I want to work hard and get drafted again next year and the year after that. I think (playing at a community college) is going to be better for me, because l can spend a whole year lifting weights and getting more (bat) speed. ''I'm going to be twice the player (I am now). I'm getting to the stage where, physically, I could take off, if 1 start lifting a lot. n Weissmann did not return phone calls Thursday. Stuart, a starting left tackle on CdM's vaunted offensive line last autumn in football, when the Sea Kings advanced to the CIP Division V semifinals, eajoyed a banner senior year for CQC\ch Joe Koh's baseball team, hitting .386 with nine home runs and 27 RBI. He tied a single-season school record for home runs, equaling Dave Angeloni's mark in 1993. •(Stuart) has definitely proven that he has at least Division 1 (college) pow- er and. obviously, scouts think he bas better power (potential) than that," Koh said.
