A ny discussion of Grammy Award-
winning guitarist Jose Feliciano's
career inevitably begins with some-
one pointing out that he was tbe song-
writer who gave us "Feliz Navidad," the
Spanish-themed holiday song that has
become a Christmas tradition worldwide.
But this is a bit like saying Beethoven
wrote a few symphonies: It's technically
accurate, but it doesn't even begin to con-
vey the whole truth.
Pelidano, who headlines the Fiesta del
Mariachi Day at this year's Orange County
Fair on July 19, has been hailed as the
world's greatest living guitarist.
The professional journal Guitar Player
has named him Best Pop Guitarist five
years in a row and elevated him to its
Gallery of Greats. He has been voted both
Best Jazz and Best Rock Guitarist in Play-
boy magazine's annual reader's poll.
He has recorded more than 40 gold and
platinum records, been nominated for 15
Grammy Awards and snagged six of those
prestigious music industry prtzes.
Not bad for a Puerto Rican kid who has
been blind since birth and began his music
<:4,reer accompanying bis uncle on a tin
crecker can.
Feliciano was born Sept. 10, 1945, one
of 11 boys growing up in a close-knit fami-
ly in Lares, Puerto Rico. When he was 5
years old, his father resettled the fomily In
New York City.

Multilingual Grammy Award-winner
Jose Feliciano has been blind since
birth. But that hasn't stopped him from
becoming one of the most celebrated
guitar playen and singers of all time .
hstening to records from his father's collec-
tion at the age of 6. He performed with his
schoolmates at a New York City Public
School 57 when he was 8, and than made
his debut at the Puerto Rican Theater.
The market for accordion virtuosos was
as woefully limited back then as it is now,

so Feliciano taught
himself to play gui-
tar. Once a~. he
mastered his new
instrument by lis-
tening to records,
sometimes for as
long as 14 hows a
day. But by now the
records in bis collec-
tion were the early
rock 'n' roll record-
ing of the 1950s,
and Feliciano was
inspired to sing.
Recognition
came quickly for
Feltdano. By the time he was 23 years old,
he bad won two Grammy Awards, toured
throughout the world and recorded songs
in four languages. He is one of the only
musicians to ever sign a multi-year contract
to record English and Spanish language
pop and clas ical music.
. A sampling .of Felioano's hits reinforces
his broad multicultural appeal. Since he
began his career, the world has enjoyed his
recordings of "Light My Fire," "Rain,•
"Chico and the Man• and "California
Dreamin'." Audiences have also embraced
• Ay Carino,• "Ponte A Cantar," "Quando
El Amor Se Acaba" and "Porque Te Tengo
Que Olvidar?"
It's safe to say that Fellciano's appeal
easily crosses different cultural bani.ers,
and audiences at the Orange County Fair
will surely find that he speaks their lan-
guage, whatever language it is they speak.

To qualify for a waiver, stu-

· Some l_ocal school board

, ~we need to inform parents
about what the requirements
are under 'f.27, but they should-
n't be encouraged to find loop-

it,· said school board member
Wendy Leece. "Teachers should
not encourdge parents to apply

this a chance to work."
The sch09l district has elinu-

Removing the 92-decibel limit

That sound level is in compli-

Kevin Murphy said.
Sanders said he and other
park residents, about 98% of
whom are senior citizens, are
concerned because they were
not notified of the large-scale
project possibly being built
next door to their bayf ront
homes.
The biggest issue by far is
traffic.
Sanders and many other
area residents worry that a
large hotel will result in grid-
lock on Bayside Dnve, which
is used primarily by mobile
home park residents.
The hotel plans show Bay-
side Drive as the main access
to the new resort.
"We know what happens
when they have a special
event at the Dunes -com-
plete and solid gridlock,•
Sanders said. "Trame and

planner,
said studies
of the inter-
sections
and roads
in the area
found that
the project
would not
cause any
major traf-
fic impacts.
The only
intersections that would get
backed up significantly dur-
ing the peak morning and
evening hours were East
Coast Highway and Dover
Drive and Jamboree Road
and Ford Road, Alford said.
But that congestion would
occur without the project and
would remain unchanged if
the project is added, accord-
ing to the report.
As for the intersection of
Coast Highway and Bayside
Drive, Alford said the devel-
opers of the hotel would pay
for improvements, including
adding lanes without widen-
ing the road. The changes
would improve the intersec-
tion in the morning rush hour
traffic, but not in the everung.
•niat intersection is not
operating at an acceptable
, level now during the peak
evening hours, but it would
not get worse after the project
is built," Alford said.
Evans said the developer
plans to meet with surround-
ing residents during the next
several weeks to make sure
they understand all aspects of
the project before they oppo:se
it.
"The argument is, you're
doing it for the money, so you
must be bad," he said. •aut

victed sex offender, was found
guilty last week by a San
Bernardino County JUTy for
forcible oral copulation on a 15-
year-old boy in Big Bear 'Lake.
Authorities found 22 photos of the
victim, some of which had him in
naked poses.
Police said the crimes occurred
on different occasions between
1967 and 1988. He faces up to 18
years in prison and will be sen-
tenced Aug. 7.
Lawton said the first reported
molestation occurred in Decem-
ber 1994. The Costa Mesa teen,
who is now 19, was picked up by
Crummel at Estancia High School
and taken to Forgey's home, he
claimed. The teen was Forgey's
patient at New Alternative Home
in Costa Mesa but had only visit-
ed his home once, where he was
given a physical examination.
The teen alleges he was given
a pink-and-white capsule that
made him feel "Pigh. tt He added
that Crummel would initiate the
sexual activity by exposing him-
self or masturbating in f~ont of the
cd to get the facility, which has
been closed since 1995, baclc in-Yo
working order.
Faugrounds neighbors and
city offioals who endured more
than a decade of loud rock con-
certs at the amphitheater before it
closed are crossing their fingers.
"I guess I'll JUSt have to wait
and see if the faif's statements
about being a good neigh~r hold
true,• said David Brown. a long-
time Presidio Drive resident. "l'm
terribly disappointed,, (with the
decision) ... but hope springs eter-
nal." ·
Costa Mesa officials, who are
essentially powE:rless over what
goes on at the a.mp}}itheater even
though it's within their city limits,
also are cautiously optimistic that
the fair will do the right thing.
• 1 share the same concerns as
the neighbors,• said City Coun-
cilman Joe Erick.son. "The sound
needs to be kept wiµlln the con-
fines of the amphiqiooter." •
teen and ForgeJ..
Lawton· testified that on five
occasions, C:rwnmel and Forgey
had sex with the boy. The victim
said he tried to pull away, but he
was hit and slapped and was
tossed like a rag doll.
"He didn't report the crimes
because he was fearful of Crum-
mel's promise that he would kill
him," Lawton said.
Forgey's attorney, alternate
public defender John Zitny, said
the victim didn't reveal he h,ad
been molested until the third
interview with authorities. When
questioned by Zitny, the detective
did say the teen used drugs and
voluntarily went to Forgey's
home to escape school and the
court-ordered home where he
was living.
Zitny added the victim's credi-
bility is questionable at best,
pointing out that police haven't
found any other victims.
"This k.id is a liar," he said.
':He's changed his story five or six
times, and the prosecution select-
ed the best one. Dr. Forgey is a
respectful professional who has
been hurt by these allegations
that haunt him. He may be guilty

• It's only a rumor, but oh, what a rµmor.
Ti ere are a number of rules

informAtion for loyal readers and

this ... it's not verified and in
reality all I can really guarantee.
is sheer speculation.
But I have to tell you. It's just
too awesome to keep under
wraps regardless of the lack of
the v.
I've given Cameron Dollar of
Southern cautomia College a
call for verification, but alas, no
return call. And maybe he won't,
or can't, or would prefer to
announce it in a more timely
manner should it come to pass.
I'd like to call the subject at
band, but if I were to make
contact. be would be crazy to
verify it, because be is currently
trying to find his way on to the
campU.S of the Maryland
Terrapins.
I'd like to back this up with a
statement from my source. But I
can't do that. It must remain
anonymous.
So what do I have? Just a
sin~le source, but one who
haPJ>ens to be very, very close to
the situation. It's one of those
inside things that come along
from an old contact who was
always one of my great allies
when I spent more tinie
watching and writing than
planning and editing.
It's the sort of c'ontact which
allows you to walk way out there
on the limb. -.i··-
So Jet me ask you the
question: What would you say to
the notion of UCLA-produtt
Cameron Dollar coming up with
the college basketball
blockbuster of the year?
What would tum virtually
