musicals and •Pocahontas• are
thell favorite sources of material.
They have also made up
games.
Last year, she tried to count the
number of cigarette butts she
picked up.
• •After about 600, we stopped,•
she said.
Or, Angela and her friends will
each pluck a piece of trash with
their picks, throw it up into the air
and try to catch it in their dust-
pan.
They also form relationships
with other fair workers, and these
friendsb.ips have rewards.
Sometimes, ride operators will

But some things are monoto-

Each day, Angela wears the
same pink T-shirt that classifies
her .as a member of the Clean

This year's fair jingle, "In the
Pink Tune• plays repeatedly
throughout her eight-hour shift.
And each night, she comes
home with aching feet and back.
But when her paycheck comes
a few weeks after the fair is over,
it will be worthwhile.
By then, the discomfort in her
feet, the sight of Australian Bat-
tered Potatoes, and the wise-
cracks will join the dregs of her
memories.

It takes about 15 seconds to

This statement is in contrast to the stated
opinions of other water polo pundits who
think that because high school water polo
programs and club team programs have
blossomed at almost every school that this
means that the players graduating are
better.
Newland agrees that the talent pool
may be bigger, but warns l\iat the actual
talent level has detenorated.
•sack in the 1970s, kids out.of lugh
school might be able to start in college as
a freshman," Newland said. •Now these
lads spend all their time in blgh school
leagues and don't learn how to play long
course water polo."
Short-course water polo pools are just
25 yards in length, the standard length for
CIF water polo matches. Long-course
pools have a playing area of 30 meters.
"The diJf erence doesn't sound like much,
but it really is," Newland said. •11 you
were to compare lt to basketball, imagine
going from a standard basketball court to
a program that plays wtth the baskets 100 ·

Such a difference in pool lengths
creates a gap in ability and knowledge of
playmaking. In a short pool, games a.re
fast paced and the scoring ii high since

skills,• Newland said. "In 1975,
everybody was playing long-course water
polo so players could step right in at
college. Now, 99% of players can't play in
their first year because they know nothing
of defense."
Such discrepancies ts why few, if any,
prep polo players are ever a threat to
make Team USA. Prep playen; justidon't
have those kinds of skills.
To Newland, the prevalence of high
school club teams playing short-course
water polo is ultimately damaging to the
future of the sport because the skills
needed take longer to learn and are
Jlarder to teach because they require
structured instruction.
"Water polo is not like basketball,"
Newland said. •Basketball players can go
anywhere and play pickup games against
players better than they are. There are no
pickup water polo games."
High school aged players would be
better trained 1f they played in
long-course programs and played against
players who have more talent so they can
learn from them.
"The better talent you face, the better
you will become,• Newland said. •That's
why my clubs play older guyw who have
more talent and knowledge. It ll a good

in foul territory.
LOS ALAMITOS -The New-
poft Harbor Baseball Association's
Mustang White Team, 9-10-year-
olds. demonstrated its resiliency
by coming back from Friday's
devastating loss to Garden Grove
to defeat Pountain Valley, 6-0, in
llie loser's bracket of the Orange
County Sectionals a t the Los
Alamitos paseball Complex.
"'~number of our players play
other sports,* Manager Kevin
Heenan said. *They've been in
big games before and know how
to win."
A key to Saturday's victory was
U.dominance of Newport's pitch-
ing trio of Dennis Heenan, Derrick
~ and Davis Pemstein.
Heenan started the game and
two innings. giving up just
hits and striking out three.
eme.n also helped himself out a4er giving up an leadoff single
iI( the second inning. Heenan
caught the runner leaning and
threw a pickoff throw to Blake
Fogg, who threw it to Donnie
Hunt for the out.
Pinski pitched the middle
three innings and dominated
Fountain Valley. Pinski struck out
two and gave up no hits. He also
"This is the best I've seen him
pitch all year,• Manager Heenan
said. "All three guys pitched well
and Pinski really came through."
Pemstein retired Fountain Val-
ley quietly in the sixth inning to
lock up the victory, after scoring
the final run on a wild pitch in the
top of the inning.
Heenan also drove in New-
port's first run with an RBI triple
in the first inning. Heenan also
reached base on' a fif!lder's choice
in the third inning, stole second
base and scored on a single by
Fogg, giving Newport a 2-0 lead.
Newport added on in the
fourth inning when Nick Frazier,
who bad walked with two outs,
scored on a Pemstein double.
In the top of the fifth inning,
Billy Munce leadoff with a single
and stole second. Munce scored
when Heenan hit his second
triple of the game. Fogg followed
up with a single and Newport had
a 5-0 lead. Pinski had two hits.

YOUTH llSlllLL
Last-inning uprising does in the locals at
Orange County Sectional Playoffs Sunday;
but the sterling effort hardly goes unnoticed.
Romm CARµ:;oN . ~rr .
LOS ALAMITOS -There were some tears evident in the
aftermath of their 9-7 exit ~rom the Orange County Mus-
tang Division Sectionals Stµlday, but the respect Newport
Harbor Baseball Assodati6n's entry had gained over the
course of its run ~ the playoffs seemed to off set the emo-
tions at the Los Alamitos Ba,seball Complex.
There· were no teams from their fans; rather big smiles
and a few hugs for a job well done.
Th.is group of 10-year-olds under the hand of Manager
Kevin Heenan had the upper hand from start to near-finish
against Anaheim, but the latter came through with three in
the bottom of the sixth and final inning to end Newport
Harbor's hopes from competing in the next plateau.
·Baseball is baseball," rationalized the team's manager
in the aftermath. "I told them I'd certainly rather lose like
th.is than lose 14-2 . •
With the group of standouts comprising the NHBA All-
Stars, that prospect would certainly seem unlikely as they
played Anaheim nose-to-nose from the start and never
trailed until the final pitch was thrown.
Both teams played with a crisp style and Anaheim final-
ly got ~e upper hand in the sixth inning, first holding New-
port scoreless in the top of the inning.
Then Anaheim struck offensively with a one-out double
by Bobby Rohwer down the right lield line preceding a
bad-hop single by Joe Kelly, which caught Newport at 7-7, .
BOATING
followed by a 220-foot borne run to left-center by Ldd.lz
Lopez to end it
It was another late-uming heartbrea.ker for Newport
after the locals had made such a big run. '
Davis Pemstem, who was three-for-fo'w Wlth two dou-
bles, led the game off with a two-bagger, and after Qonrue
Hunt, Dennis Heenan and Blake Fogg lashed $1.ngles.
NHBA tlad a 3-0 edge.
ln the fourth inning Heenan, Newport's lanky starter on
. the mound, walked and eventually scored' with heads-up
base-running; and m the fifth Newport.struck, but alas, not
hard enough. Three walks and Pemstein's second double produced
one run after two out, but three runners were left stranded
Still, Newport came back Wlth two more in the fifth to
take a 7-5 lead on the strenutb of Derek Pinski's RBI double
to left and Pernstein's run~produong stinger off the lhlfd
baseman's glove.
Newport appeared to have every ingredient working
with some clutching pitching and superior defense, espe·
dally in the fonn of Hunt, first at short, then at second as he
snuffed out potential rallies Wlth two unassisted twm
killings, in addition to a great stop rn the first inrung to lim-
it Anaheim to one run on the play, and an uuung-endlng
scoop and flip in the fifth with two runners aboard
Spencer Moore and Ricky Nelson' also contnbuted base
hits in Newport's 13-hlt attack, but the nine base-runners
left stranded, proved fatal.

1 trump and pass. (If you play negauvc
doubles., that comes into considera-
tion as well.) Do not even consider a
club raise. Since almost oil your val-
ues arc in the enemy suit, and may
be of linle use to partner, pass. Even
contemplating a negauve double
wollld be awful!
Partner opens the bidding with one
spade. Wh~t do you respond?
A ·You have a fine five-~ heart
suit, but the hand 1s not quite good
enough for a two-over'-one-response.
As in the previous example, raise
opener's suit. 111is hand 1s a ma1ti·
mum for a raise to two spades, no
more.

Panner opens the bidding with one
club. What do you respond?
A ·You have a very good hand, if
you play a.spade CQfltract. However,
your su11 is not self-sufficient and
your singleton in partner's suit sug-
gests caution. Be content lo bid one
spade 10 see what develops.

· What do you bid now?
A -No one would quibble with a
rebid of one no trump to describe 11
balanced minimum opening bid.
That, however, demonstrates a fail·
ure to properly evaluate your prime
cards and ruffing val ue in clubs.
Those assets clearly favor a suit con-
tract, so raise to two spades.
