Dmyl'b NEWPORT BEACH -Altinnovative solution to a smelly and potentially dan- gerous problem in the western part of the city came to We Thursday. · Local officials gathered for a special ceremony al Hoag Hospital to formally activate a network of underground pipes called the "gas mitigation system .• The pipes suck methane gas from beneath the soil and channel it to tanks that convert the gas into fuel .fc5r the hos- pital's heating and cooling systems. The methane gas is naturally generat- ed by decom~tng marine material ill the coastal area and has been a nuisance to the city, Caltrans, local residents and businesses ror many years. When escaping gas seeped into crevices and crawl spaces, it would give off an odor like rotten eggs and could potentially explode. In the 1970s, the city installed a system of wells and pipes to funnel the gas to a torch on the Hoag Hospital property. But the new system will handle larger volumes of gas and use the energy 'instead of just burning it off, said Louis Pandolifi, the project's designer. The solution bas been a cooperabve effort between Hoag and Caltrans, which ·each kicked in $750,000 for the project, and the city, which monitors the project, said Newp~rt City Council· woman Jan Debay. WHERE IT BEGA A woman, above, admires the clean air and expansive view at the new Upper Castaways Park in Newport Beach. Local officials gathered atop the bluffs over- looking Upper Newport Bay on Tbw;sday for the dedi- cation of the park. The passive.park -conslsUng of asphalt trails Uned with a wooden fence, native grass- es and wildflowers -has been a city dream for the past three years. The City Council in June 1997 approved spending $858,625 to build the 16-acre park, · off Dover Drive and 16th Street. "We have been dealing with the problem of methane gas in th~ oty for probably more than 40 years.· but we· haven't been successful-up unW today -in turning a negative mto a positive,• she said. •1 am so proud to see its com- pletion.• The new system includes: two large tanks, or •scrubbers,• that clean the gds of the nutrients that cause the bad odor; pumps that send the gas up to Haag's boiler room through undergroWld pipes, and a flare that will bum off gas only when it is not being used for energy, Pandolili said. The old llare near the interse<::tion of Hoag Road ahd West Coast Highway that resembled a tiki torch will no longer be used. .. This week's column is by Judy Kelley. lkJtf Plot n a large, sunlit room, fl group of children sat in a cir- cle on the floor eating apples. They smelled and pol- ished the apples before taking big, juicy bites. Nothing unusu- al -except that their hands and mouths were empty. The children were in the · middle of a free acttng 'lesson Tuesday afternoon at Girls Inc., a children's activity center in Costa Mesa. "I want to really believe you'r~ chewing an apple," Steve DeNaut, an acting teacher from South Coast Repertory, told the children. The lessons are part of Neighborhood Conservatory, a program started by the compa- ny in 1986 as a way of introduc- ing theater to children who migllt. not otherwise be exposed to th~ arts. Many of the chil- dren are from poor neighbor- hoods 8!1d others simply haven't seen theater before. ·usually every year, we try to contact different places and offer it up to them,• said Holly Van Holt, SCR's education coor- dinator. The classes, which are offered twice a week for five weeks or once a week for ten weeks, have been taught in Santa Ana. Garden Grove and at Shalimar Learning Center in Costa Mesa. . •we go into the neighbor- hoods where these things are needed,• said Madeline Porter, spokeswoman for SCR. DeNaut, who has been act- ing at SCR since 1972, meets with the Girls Inc. group twice a week for five weeks with 18 children between 8 and 11 years old. The atmosphere is . loud and chaotic, filled with ·the sounds of other children at play, but the attention of these chil- dren is devoted to DeNaut. The class is so popular that, while he normally limits enroll- ment to 15, DeNaut accepted· ~ DON LEACH I DAll.Y Pit.OT From left. Farrell Roth. "I have to act like a child myself,• said the bespectacled DeNaut. who has salt;and-pep- per hair. "When they see an older gentleman like myself making faces and acting silly, then they have no trouble mak- ing faces and acting silly.• DeNaut turned, the music on and told the children to dance until it stopped. Some moved confidently, others self-con- sdc)usly. Each time the music stopped, they froze in place. "If they can feel free to move their bodies, then I can get them into characterizations,• said DeNaut, who at one point nad the children act like old men. e helped 'them work on their speech, giving them accents and tongue twisters like "black bug's blood• to limber up their voic- es, and taught them to project their voices. "At first, I try to get them to let loose,• DeNaut said. •Then I start pulling them back so we start dealing (with) realism.• The children learn to have an awareness of the stage, DeNaut said, and leam'"tbat there is an audience out there and that everything they do has got to be geared toward the audience.• The children took turns recit· ing lines from "Romeo and Juli- et." They fidgeted. They played with the hems of their shorts. They smiled nervously. Some remembered the lines. Others didn't. •u .you forget, just say 'forgot the words' and take your seat,• DeNaut told the children. •The audience will th.ink that's part of the script. They don't know.• · At the end of the five.-week program, the children will turn their knowledge into action and perform a skit for an audience. Sometimes students do so well' '1 in the class that they earn schol-1 arships to SCR's Young Conser- vatory program. Fo~ stholarship students now in the· Young Con- servatory were once Neighbor- hood Conservatory students, Van Holt saJd. And some go on to pursue careers in theater. Kamarr Richee, a Neighbor- hood Conservatory graduate and one of the theater's Teen Players, has worked for the television show • Moesha." "I really enjoy the work, because these kids are all really wide open," DeNaµt said. "They don't have a lot of pre- conceived notions other than they think that acting is simple ... I change their minds quickly.• The children appreciate the chance to learn and work hard, he said. Jaimie Leyva, 9, practices what she's learned in the class at home. ' "We were driving and she starts saying these tongue twisters,• Jaimie's older sister, Yuntzi, said. "It helps her pro- nounce words. It's really cute, actually.• Parents have also told DeNaut that they see a notice- able difference in their chil- dren's self-confidence. •Everything I'm teaching them is really a life lesson,• · DeNaut said. "Whatever you do, you're going to have to speak in public. You're going to have to deal with other people, and you cannot do that if you're crippled by embarrassment." Pew remember that Young was 8.lso the executive producer, so the show was more a reflec· lion of Robert Young than people realized. Betty, Bud and Kathy -were near-perfect kids, mischie- vous at worst. I liked Betty and Bud, but I remember disliking kid sister Kathy inteflSely. She was so whiny. Worse yet. Robert Young would always comfort her and call her "Princess." Yak. Any- way, it's sad to see America's Dad pass on. Did those times really emt, or were they just a video fantasy? But insic.t,e, I was as excited as a c;hild. ,1 was going to have my face~ted. Daily Pilot phot091apher Kim Haggerty·Zyllus and 1 had decid· ed to explore the ways to person· al adornment at the10range County Fair. ~ We found a fa e·painting booth next to Yo th in Motion. After checking out a board. _ covered with photographs of people Wlth painted faces, I chose a design with bright blue and white swirls and yellow dots, and face painter Gary Price put the paintbrush, covered in cold, wet theatncal makeup, to my fac.e. Price and lus wile, Ch$, are professional clowns by trade, but ..spend each summer traveling • from Phoenix to fairs around Cal· lfornia. This is their eighth year ' at the Orange County Fair. Most paintings are $4. Charac- ters -such as Winnie·the·Pooh, Elmo and 1Weety Bird -cost $5. Full face paintings are $6 to $8. They get some unusual requests, Ulcluding one boy who wanted to look like the Tennina- tor. Pnce worked quickly -the pamb.ng of my face took only a few rrunutes to complete. ~You learn to be fast, all the faces you do," he said. After my face was adorned wtth beaub- f uJ swirls resembling one of Dr Seuss' char- acters, it was llme to get a tattoo. Not a permanent tattoo -I'm not ready • for that kind of commit- • ment. But something a little more elaborate than the Cracker Jack rub-on kind. The artists a l The Captain body art booth use redl tattoo stencils, but brush on alcohol·based paints. The resuJt is very real-looking - KIM HAGGERTY·ZVUUS I DAILY PILOT Dally Pilot reporter Alison Murray looks at her face after getttng it painted by Gary Price at the Orange County Fatr on Thursday. Below, Dally Pilot photographer Kim Haggerty-Zylim gets a temporary tattoo on her ankle at the fair. tattoos (to the untrained eye, of course) that last two to seven days. Durability depends on indi- vidual skin type, tat· too artist Carmen Ortiz said. Body oils decrease the tattoo's life expectancy: water is good -1t w asnes away oils. I pored over a selection of flow- ers, dragons and animals and finally chose a crescent moon with a face, while Kirn chose a bright·yellow sun. Prices range from $4 to $30, depending on the length of time involved. The booth also offers henna body art, starting at $15. I could see that body dec~ra· tion could easily become addic- tive -and it isn't limited to skin. Great quantities of jewelry can be found for sale at the fair, mduding toe rings at Hugh Spencer Jewelers. The toe rings run from $5 for a twisted silver nng to $45 for 14-karat gold. The hair is not to be ignored. For $11, you can get your hair twisted in a circle around your head and even adorn~ with dried flowers at the Class Act booth. Llttle girls especially like the hairdos, judging from the nwn· ber of them crushed around the lone employee, who wrapped their hair around doth·and·wire ·bandits" as quickly as she could. The bandits are $7 with- out styling. Addictions get expensive, though, so it was time to leave. For the rest of the day, heads turned when I walked past. I think I could get used to that much attention. •ALISON MURRAY is a Dally Pilot staff writer. Newport Beach/Costd Mesa Doily Pilo flll SCllDULE. TODAY •The fair Is open from 10 a.m. to midnight.
