ID n the heels of the New~

School Board's approval
()f e r~tructuring of district's
administrative employee
es, the Dally Pilot received
8f anonymous letter that said
tbe only bnght side to the tinung 9' the board's decision was that,
" ... fall would be a wonderful
time for a strike.•
Was it parent, teacher, stu-
dent, fliend or foe?
No one knows.
Union employees and school
officials interviewed about the
letter and the

they haven't
heard anything
about either.
Salary talks
are scheduled
to continue
Aug. 13 and
"Oh, please!" said school
board member Martha Fluor
when she heard about the letter.
Fluor said there hasn't even
been an ink.ling or the idea of a
strike
•I believe we will come up
with an agreement," she said.
TRICKS OF THE TRADE: U you
wanted to win a pnze at the
Orange County Fair, all you had
to do was listen to carnival game
attendants.
They gave helpful tips before
customers stepped up to the
counter, but one attendant said
amid the excitement, they tune
out the adVlce.
"It's up to them il they want
to listen or not,• he said. "We
demonstrate how to win the
game, but they think they are
the experts."
Game attendants, known as
"carnies," don't get much
respect either. Frustrated cus-
tomers have taken their aggres-
sion out on them, they say, with
incidents ranging from dousing
them with beer to actually
blocking punches.
•We get a bad name," srud
another carnie. "I don't think we
deserve that just because they
lose.•
TAKING CENTER STAGE: Every-
one who saw the 9 p.m. perfor-
mance of Carrot Top at the
Orange County Fair on Wednes-
day knows that an almost equal
star of the show was the sign
language interpreter, affecbon-
ately known as Herb.
Herb did an excellent and
often times lulalious JOb of trans-
lating the orange-haired comedi-
an's wild and crazy antics for the
hearing-unpaired members of
the audience.
The highlight of the show was
when Carrot Top brought Herb
up onstage to do his best
Michael Jackson impression in
front of a wind machine -com-
plete with the signature crotch-
grab.
The crowd roared with laugh-
ter and applause. We love you,
Herb.

for categories such as: best father
and child, best decorated boat
and oldest skipper, which went to
Roy Woolsey.
"His age is classified, but it's
over 80, • Beek said.
There was also the youngest
boy, 9-year-old Alan Hardison;
youngest girl, 11-year-old Eliza-
beth DeWitt and first girl, Thacy
Theaccar, who came in 16th over-
all.
Attendance was slightly down
from last year's race, when more
than 70 boats competed.
•1•m not sure why there
weren't more people,• Beek said.
·1 think the pollution in the Bay
may have scared some people
away. But it was all cleaned up.•
Sponsored by the Com-
modores Club of the Newport
Harbor Area Chamber of Com-
merce, the race has become a sta-
ple among boat lovers in Orange
County for the past 61 years. .
Some racers come from as far
away as San Diego to participate,
but Beek said most participants
are local, including th~ winner of
the "Bravery in the face of dan-
ger,• trophy, 7-year-old J .P.
Hogan. The boy, who was sailing with
his father, John Hogan, success-
fully took control of the boat
when his father fell off.
•1t was kind of a tongue-in-
cheek award but the young man
really earned it,· Beek said.

Warsow bought his first

stocks. Still hungry for more
information, Warsaw purchased
. Internet stock software. But it
wasn't enough.
•At home, I could only get
my hands on so much informa-
tion," he said. ·
So he sought out a job at a
• brokerage firm. His dad is a
client of Smith-Barney, so he
called the brokerage to arrange
the internship. He works with
two or three other interns at the
office.
For five weeks, George
Rauch, the first vice president of
the Newport Beach branch, is
leading Warsaw step by step
through the workings of the
stock OUU'ket and a brokerage
firm, '
Warsaw is learning how to
build a clientele. Next week he
will learn bow to keep that
clientele. He .is assigned to read
two books on the stock market,
and concludes each day by
reporting to Rauch on what he
has read and learned.
His experience is showing
him how much he still has to
ledl'n.
In contrast to his high school.
classmates, Warsaw ts sur·
rounded by brokers who know
a lot more about the stock mar-
ket than he does.
•compared to everyone el$e
in here, J am nothing,• he said.
So Warsaw doesn 't mind that
~ doesn't have the licenses
necessary to gjve out finand8l
advice.
HQwever, Warsaw hasn't
done poorly himself m th.tis mar-
ket. He has yet to lose money
on an investment, and the value
of his Microsoft stock has
increased more than 390%.'
Today, he owns stock in such
companies' as Compaq Com-
puters, Dell Computers, Intel
and Coca-Cola.
And his excitement about his
job is rising as fast as the bull
market.
.. I like the idea of making
money without manual labor," ·
he said.
Plus, he is able to use his
intelligence, a tlling he says a
lot of other summer jobs don't
require.'
~ r look forward to getting up
in the morning and going to
work." he said.
This is vital to Warsaw, who
plans to major in business at the
University of Michigan this fall.
~1 think it is important to be
intE!rested in what you're
doing,• he said. •someone
can't do their job well if they're
really not enjoying it.•
And if happiness is the crite-
rion for a successful broker,
WaISaw will ride this bull mar-
ket to the top.

H ow far are you willing to

For Jonathan Volzke, Dale

answered Thursday night when

started to deal out the cards.

much fuss and all four started to
get into the game when the first

sense fear as all four competitors
tried to concentrate on the g~e
and on the roaming predator.
The rodeo clowns were doing
their best to ensure that the bull
would not only notice the table,
but tlSe it as a tackling dummy.
But that particular bull, after
kicking up a little dirt and
threatening to charge, didn't
seem )nterested.
So, the rodeo organizers
decided that they would solve
the problem, they would remove
the reluctant bull a"1d let loose a
much meaner one.
Tb.is bull, who was
blueacolored, showed from the

He stampeded around the arena

After a slow approach, the
bull rushed the table. Volzke,

bull went around him, slammed
into the table and scattered the

range of locations. One of those players, Man-
derville "Sledge" Fredricks, travelled from
Modesto for only lu.s second tnp to the tournament.
That five-hour dnve proved valuable as
Fredric.ks helped lu.s 1989 teammates to a 55-35 victory over
1983 in the title game on Saturday at Corona del Mar High. ·
·it's pretty rewardmg, ·Fredricks said. "Usually I had to work
during the tournament, but thls year I had a weekend off and
decided to make the drive.•
Both teams made it to the finals by narrow margins. The 1989s
defeated 1990 by one point m the semilin.als and 1983 defeated
1986 in overtime, 43-39.
A factor in the '1Ue game was fabgue,
both physical and emotional. As a result,
the game got off to a sluggish start with
both teams missing shots and malong
turnovers. '111ii1'9 ...

The major reason for this chdflge was depth and the adding of

Determination was the detemuning factor in the game. With
a deeper bench, '89 was able to stay fresher than most teams and
the necessary energy was there to win at the end.

Whal action do you take?
A • At first it m1iht seem that you
have an automauc jump to four
spades. However, consider the vul·
ncrabilit,Y. Jf panncr has anything
rcumbhng a double, there is a dis·
t111Ct likelihood the contract will be
dereatcd at lcas1 two tncks -more
than the value or a non-vulnerable
game. Add to that the possibility of
bad brulcs and the fact that pattner
m1ah1 have only three-cltd support
for spades. ind a past looks more
