I By Tina Oamikolas, Daily Pilot
:.:',.~' The call came the night before Sunday, leav· ing Paula Petersen thinking "What a
Father's Day gift.• A liver was available for
her husband, Tud, who's been waiting about
two months now for the organ he needs to live.
:',,,' Ted, excited by the news, was rushed to the UCLA hospital for the operation. But later, the
operation was canceled. The liver was too fatty
::::.,'.~:,. and would have been worse than the malfunc-tioning one Ted has now, said Paula, 39.
•When they said it had been canceled, it felt
like the wind had been blown out of me." said
Ted Petersen. 43.
Ted's critical illness has sent him and his Costa
Mesa family on a roller coaster ride of visits to the
hospital, medications, and symptoms such as
memory loss and mood swings.
But the experience, Paula says, has also
reveal~ the touching support of friends and fam-
ily. And God, she says, has literally "carried" her
through.
An auction last Friday night held by Calvary
Church Newport·Mesa, where Ted sings and
plays guitar during services, drew 300 people and
raised about $7,000 -a lot more than the rough-
ly $2,000 expected.
"When they told us, the a.mount of money was

COSTA MESA -Despite talk
of further cuts to Orange County
Public Libraries, City Manager
Allan Roeder does not expect
Costa Mesa's two branches to see
any reduction in days or hours of
operation.
Costa Mesa is one of three
cities whose county · librar.y
branches raise enough revenue to
cover the costs of operation. For
that reason, Roeder said, the city's
tw~ branches should be protected
from cuts at least through the end
of the year.
"It may happen m other

system.• Roed-
er said. "But I
don't expect a

more than the
cost of current
services."
Allan Roeder The city's
library commit-
tee is continuing to study its
options and receiving information
from oties which operate their
own lJbrary systems. At Thursday
rught's meeting of the League of
Cities, Costa Mesa voted to
request the supervisors not oper·
ate the Orange County Public
Library system with reserve funds.

NEWPORT BEACH -When
James Thompson saw a ·For

empty lot on Newport Boulevard
that formerly housed a gas sta·

park to the city as a gift that·
would serve as an inviting entry·

•I thought it would be a

"This would be a key pucel as
you come onto the Peninsula, so
it's real important that we obtain
it, and the city is very much
behind it."
Last Monday night, the City
Council approved the concept of
the donation as a "passive
park," not for pedestrians to
walk through but as a land·
scaped entryway. According to a
city report, the city will accept
ownership ol the park once it is
completely developed. and will
cover the estimated $100,000
development costs. Additionally,
the city will take responsibility
for the park's ongoing mainte·
nance, which is estimated to cost
$1,200 annually, according to
the city report.
The sale of the property is in
escrow, Thompson said, and
once that is finalized the council
will take a formal action. The
city's biggest concern with the

From this brute,
there is no escape
LOOKING BACK
LwnDerit)g through Newport's early day~
.
T be automattc teller
machine was like a bea-
con. But my life was
soon to be forever changed.
As I deposited my paycheck, a
burly thug accosted me at
gunpoint and demanded my
cash.
Jn the shadowy twilight, I
could not make out his
masked face, but I could see
that he was heavyset, strong,
quite obese, yet made even
more powerlul by the deadly
force be possessed. He was
immaculately and expensively
attired. Although the side-
walk was crowded, no one
seemed to notice my plight.
I cried for help, but people
ignored me. Some ran from
the area, others just looked
past me and winked. The
unfeeling bully jammed his
weapon to my ribs causing a
painful welt.
lrernbling with fear, I
handed over my meager cash.
He stuffed it in his pocket, and
his huge bulk seemed to grow
even more. I pleaded to keep
some pittance for my young
family. .
He laughed derisively and
threw a few bills at my feet.
Slightly relieved at now being
able to buy formula for my
baby, I bowed before the fig-
ure to gather the money.
As I straightened, he
slammed me against the wall.
This huge monster clutched
my neck and jabbed a well-
manicured finger in my ashen
face.
"You haven't seen the last
of me," he threatened.
"Wha-?" I choked.
His enunciation was clear
and educated, but his voice
disdainful.
•I'll return for more. Your
money is now my money. Il I
decide to give some back to
you, you'll spend it as I deter-
mine. ·u you don't.• he hissed, "J
know where you live, what
you own, and all about your
family,•
A cold sweat seeped from
every pore of my body. Tears
~ouded my vision. He
relaxed his grip ever so slight-
ly as r timidly probed, .. How
can you know these things.
and why do you not allow me
to buy what I need?"
·vou worm,• he sneered.
"How dare you question my
knowledge and my
authority? I know better
than you what your family
requires. I am rich and power-
ful because I get what I want
from many, many saps like
you.
"I control you and your
friends, because I give you
money to spend as I say, and I
keep the rest for myself. I
john
hedges
deserve it as my reward for
watching over you and your
family.
"Do you see anyone com-
ing to your aid? Everyone else
recognizes and understands
my benevolence, '"he taunted.
•The true·~uevers in me
give me their money gratefully
with no expectation or desire
of any quantifiable return.
They are satisfied with my
empty promises. They thank
me, and call me good and
great. J'bey worship at my
feet.
·Now, if you don't acqui-
esce, I can snuff you out with
a llick of my wrist.·
!tried to respond, but words
could not form in my
parched throat. He convulsed
with contemptuous laughter. I
was a}Ved at his size and pow-
er, bis articulate speech, his
ominous demeanor.
He continued, ·rube
checking on you. And I'll get
more from you. In return I will
secure the subservience due
me. That is your reward.•
He cast me down and
stalked away. Bile welled up
in my throat and my stomach
heaved uncontrollably. I was
left limp, injured.
People were again pas.mtg
by. I struggled to stand on rub-
bery legs, but still no one helped
me. They looked straight ahead
as if I were invisible.
Inexplicably, the memory of
my encounter seemed to be
fading rapidly even as I could
dimly make tJie outline of the
hector assaulting another
innocent on the next block. Jn
a twisted sense, I was feeling
appreciative for his not ta.king
everything.
I called again for help. A
stooped, matronly lady
approached.
She took my hand, and
whispered, •vou fool. You
brought it all on yourself."
So it is with our federal
government.

The McFadden Brothen, .
James and Robert, certainly have
a founding fathers' role in the
development ¢ Newport Beach.
It started out with a need for lum-
ber for houses and for fences in a
treeless area.
In 187.(, the McFaddens
ordered fence lumber from
1\inidad in northern California.
Two lumber ICOWS, Mose and
Susie, brought it into the treach-
erous, sandbar-filled harbor, and
left filled with grain. It was a dan-
gerous venture.
The McFaddens, amazed at
how quickly lumber would sell at
any price, decided to reopen
Newport Landing, which had
closed when the Irvine Ranch suf-
fered through the collapse of the
wool market and a drought.
The farmers of Gospel
Swamp and Old Newport were
eager for the trade, and used
their mule teams to grade the
dirt roads to the landing. Also, at
low tide, they dredged a pas-
sage through the bay with mule
power.
To navigate the bay waters, the
McFaddens had a special boat
built, "The NewpoJt," a shallow
draft schooner with a capacity of
331 tons. She carried passengers,
lumber, merchandise, cattle and
farm produce.
From 1875 to 1895, the New-
port faithfully floated across the
sandbar at the harbor entrance at
high tide every two weeks. U she
was too heavily laden, lighters or
barges were floated out to unload
her goods. Lumber was some-
times thrown overboard and
allowed to float into the beach at
Corona del Mar, where it was
gathered, dragged up the slope

and dried.
The McFaddens rented an
acre of land at the top of the bluff
above Newport Landing. There
they built a three-story ware-
house with a wooden chute down
to the landing, so sacks of grain
could be delivered. to the hold of
the waiting ship.
Newport Landing became a
busy place with farmers bring-
ing produce, visitors renting
rowboats to gather abalone at
Rocky Point (Corona del Mar) to
fish or swim in the bay waters,
12-mule carts hauling goods
inland to Santa Ana or Old New-
port. It was not an altogether
pleasant place, as a group of
Portuguese fishermen, led by
Emmanuel Dabney, used the
landing to cut up sharks to
extract their oil. The smell of
decaying shark was noticeable
for miles around.
In 1887, a series of events
caused the McFaddens to aban-
don their shipping business at the
landing and begin construction of
a wharf on the ocean side of the
sand spit, in quiet waters next to a
deep submarine valley that would
accomodate the largest ocean
freighters. ,
The Santa Fe railroad was
bringing more and more ~ple
into the area and the demand for.
lumber and supplies was over·
whelming the small "Newport.•
But the McFaddens were sick
at heart from the drownings in the
bay entrance --, first the young
captain and four seamen from the
"Newport" and their good friend
and employee Tom RUle who
drowned trying to lead the loaded
ship to safety through .the
entrance.
In 1888, the Newport Landing
buildings were floated across the
bay. and nothing remained but
the empty warehouse and a few
fishermen's shaclcs.

Undergraduate degrees aren't easy to earn.
That's why those who achieve them have at
least some of what it takes to go on to earn
. graduate degrees in law: Traditionally,
undergraduate degrees in political science,
English, and other disciplines that t~ach
analysis and writing are good preliminaries to
a juris doctor. However, any major can help
prepare you for the rigorous schooling ahead.
Your major can be a minor consideration
when h comes to earning your law degree.
But, hard work and determination are the
major elements contributing to your success.

Bus driver's firing tqugh .
for OCTA to swallow
W hat's a sure way to
get a good dose of
bad publicity?
Fire someone unjustly.
Just look what happened to
Richard Nixon when he fired
Watergate Special Prosector
Archibald Cox. Just ask Presi-
dent Clinton if he'd like to
redo the whole Tr9velgate
affair.
And just ask a few folks at
Orange County Transit
Authority if they think it was
worth it to fire bus driver
Bruce Anderson for not dis-
tributing hamburger coupons.
· Anderson is a strict vege-
tarian who believes killing
animals for meat or clothing is
wrong. So it was personally
repugnant to him to be asked
to hand out the burger
coupons.
Put them in a box where
customers can grab them, he
said. Just don't make me hand
them out.
No way, said OCTA offi-
cials, who sacked him for his
insubordination and touched
off a firestorm of controversy.
The story made its way onto
CNN and was picked up by
The Associated Press and oth-
er national media. Anderson
has become the darling of
vegetarian groups every-
where.
Now, before you dismiss
Anderson's protest wholesale,
let's change the scenario a bit.
Suppose Anderson was a
staunch Christian. And sup-
pose OCTA asked him to
hand out coupons for a good
time at Mermaids nude
lounge in Newport Beach.
Wouldn't be have. the right
to say "No way"?
After all, he was hired to
drive a bus, not promote
cheeseburgers or nude
lounges.
But the strict vegetarian
Anderson shouldn't worry too
much.
tony
dodero
Most likely, he will win this
battle.
Not because he hired hot-
shot attorney Gloria Allred,
but because this is a case
where basic civil liberties just
got run over by a bus ...
a
Last week, after a House
subcommittee voted to extend
the ban on offshore oil
drilling, Newport Beach city
officials said they hoped the
ban could somehow become
permanent and therefore put
an end to their annual lobby-
ing· efforts.
Good point.
So I decided to put in a call
to our local congressmen for a
response.
Vince Sollitto, press
spokesman for Congressman
Christopher Cox. noted that
his boss does indeed support a
permanent ban .and has sup-
ported legislation m the past
that would achieve that.
"Chris has long supported
continuing the ban on new
drilling off the Orange County
coast," Sollitto said.
He said Cox has great con-
cern for how a spill would
harm tourism, how platforms
would ruin coastal views for
people who have paid for
beachfront homes and for the
great deal of au pollution
those platforms generate.
Dana Rohrabacher, the
other local congressman,
doesn't share that view, how-
ever.
When I called bis Wash-
ington office, an aide who
answered the phone, Gary
Curran, told me Rohrabacher
was not in favor of extending
the ban.
Actually, wasn't it
Rohrabacher who once said
the blinking lights on oil plat-
forms enhanced the coastal
skyline at night?
The daytime's a whole dif-
ferent matter ...
a
Spealung of Congressman
Cox, the media is starting to
seriously consider the possi-
bility that he could indeed be
Bob Dole's running mate
come Uus November -espe-
cially with retired Gen. Colin
Powell playing hard to get.
The Los Angeles Times fea-
tured a column about Cox on
Friday. and the Newport
Beach congressman also was
featur~d prominently in a
recent issue of The Hill, a
newspaper 'which focuses on
those pinstriped guys in our
nation's capital.
But the headlines on the
stories showed the difference
in which Cox is viewed.
The headline on The Hill
story was: •Popularity and
knowledge of issues puts Cox
in veep hunt.•
In the Times, "The advan-
tages of an unknown con-
gressman."
Go figure ...

GRINDING TO
AHALT
Drivers will hear grinding
noises upon applying their
brakes when the brake linings
are worn down to the metal
backing plates (In the case of
bonded linings) or to the rivets
(in the case of riveted linings).
Locating the problem may
simply be a matter of listening
carefully to where the grinding
noises originate . The front
brakes are usually the fastest to
wear out because they shoulder
most of the responsibility for
stopping the car. Correcting the
source of grinding noises
promptly is necessary if damage
to the brake discs or drums is to
be avoided. If the damage is
minor, discs and drums can be
machined to render the surface
that contacts the pads or shoes
smooth and serviceable. If the
damage to discs and drums is
severe, these parts will have to
be replaced as part of a brake
job.
HINT: Brake pads or shoes and
brake discs and drums should be
replaced in matched sets.
BOOTING UPA
CV JOINT
Constant velocity (CV) joints
are flexible joints used In tront-
wheel-drive (FWD) automobiles
to pennlt smooth application of
power to the wheels. In the
event that a FWD car should
display clicklng noises coming
from the front of the car during
turns, it may be due to a worn
outboard CV joint. Each side of
the car has an Inner and outer
joint, both of which are covered
by protective seals known as
"boots." if there are no unusual
noises coming from the front of
the car and ttiete Is no shudder
or vibration, but the boot Is tom,

If this bit of maintenance Is
performed Immediately, It can
prevent the destruction of the

those people, the moral support,"
Paula said. "You come home and
race to the answering machine
just to hear who's called."
The auction made Ted's father
cry, and Paula says s he woke up
the next morning "still floating."
Everyone is praying, the couple
said. The church also has a fund
for anyone interested in helping
with the Petersens' medical bills.
Ted Petersen has bad hepatitis
for about 10 years now, but the
symptoms have only started to
appear in the last two. Ted. now in
computer sales, got the illness from
his former drug and alcohol lifestyle.
"I was in the music business,
the fast lane, drinking with every-
one else," be said. "I thought I
was indestructible."
Now, Ted has a different per-
spective. "I've learned you only

want some reserve funds to still
be in place. By using the reserves
to continue current operations,
the county would "give the
appearance that the system isn't
in as big trouble as it is," Roeder
said.
A task force of city managers is
responsible for finding a way to
deliver library services despite
the system's meager finances.
Roeder expects Costa Mesa to
have a better map of the fate of its
own branches within the next 8 to
12 months.
Topics covered in the work-
shop include small business set-
up, types of business elites, busi-
ness income and expenses, sched-
ule C and self-employment tax.
Seating is available on a first

said. "If you treat it wrong, it will
kick back at you. If someone is
doing drugs or alcohol, I tell them
you have one life, use it wisely."
In fact, Ted and Paula both had
drug and alcohol problems when
they married, although neither
admitted it at the time, Ted said.
They cleaned up after Paula sought
help, Ted said, and have been drug-
and alcohol-free for five years.
"That's the sad part," Paula
said. "You finally clean up and
this happens."
Paula says Ted's illness has
changed her priorities. "I used to
wony how dusted my house
was," she said. "Now my priori-
ties are these three guys... she
said of her husband and two sons,
Teddy, 7, and Jimmy, 6, as the
family sat in a room in Hoag
Memorial Hospital Presbyterian
in Newport Beach on Father's
Day, presenting dad with his gifts.
Paula added: "It makes me
more compassionate for sick peo-
ple. That little pink (organ donor)
card on the back of your driver's
license means a lot more now."
U the current system does not
continue, cities might consid er
entering into a joint powers
agreement with the county or else
they might pull out and decide to
operate their own libraries.
Currently, Roeder says, it is too
early to reach a conclusion.
"We're not at that point yet,"
Roeder said. "I don't believe the
agencies have enough informa-
tion and facts to be ma.king that
kind of decision."

· • Dave Ullman
beats back Dennis
Conner's challenge
to win fifth Lipton.
' By Jim Walters, Daily Pilot
WPORT BEACH -The
trophy case at the Balboa
Yacht Club would have
looked more than a little sparse
· without Sir Thomas Lipton's Cup
as its cornerstone.
As it is, the BYC won't have to
worry about what to do with the
space for at least another year
because it's own Dave Ullman
defended his title for the fifth
straight time to retain the Cup.
It's believed live consecutive
titles is a first in the Upton Cup
Challenge Regatta's fabled histo-
ry which stretches back to 1903.
"J don't know about that," Ull-
' man said with a touch a laughter
U1 his voice. "I just know things
couldn't have gone better for us.
"Having Dennis here sure made
it special. He is a good, honest
it next year," Ullman said. •1
think it's time for me to retire.
There are a lot of good young
people in the club and I think it's
time to give somebody else a
chance."
This year's five-race format
offered an extra pinch of spice
with the San Diego Yacht Club
trotting out Conner, it's ace, to try
and wrest the Cup away from
Ullman.
The duos' two boats -Conner
aboard Wings and Ullman with
Buttercup -weren't exactly
names that would strike fear into
the hearts of most men. But on
the water, both were more dead-
ly than a Water Moccasin -the
-entry from the Monti:!rey Bay
Yacht Club.
This weekend's Lipton Cup off
Newport Pier certainly lived up to
it's pre-race hype, and more, with
the two "Big Boys" of yachting
rising to the top of the 16-team
Shock 35 Class field. There was
some good sailing all around, but
in the end it was the individual
matchup between Conner and
Ullman, both former Olympians,
that stole the spotlight.
Ullman felt the $aJile way, leav-
ing nothing to chance the final
two races of the day.
"You don't have to win every
race, it's the accumulated points
at the end, but we wanted to
press our advantage," he said. •I
think the first race (Sunday)
morning was the turning point,
but be sure made it tense in the
final race."
Conner led the fourth race, but
eventually slipped back to third
as Ullman pWled away for his
third win in four races to take a
five-point lead over Conners
heading into the final race.
The fifth race was a treat. Match
racing at its finest.
•Dennis knew what he had to do
to win, ft Ullman said. "He had to
put as many boats between us as
he could.
"It was Dennis doing his thing.
He made a race out of it at the
end. He'd get ahead, but then
we'd sail back to him. It was a
case of our parts being better
than his parts. H
· competitor. It's a pleasure to race
against the best. H
An obviously disappointed Con-
ner was gracious in returning the
compliment.
Conner came into the weekend
as a four-time' winner of the Up-
ton Cup who had been absent
from the field the past four years.
Of course, he's best known for
his four America's Cup wins and
for being the first American to
ever lose the Cup (in 1995 to
New Zealand).

Dave Ullman and the crew of Buttercup are out in front and on their way to a Ufth straight title
at the Upton Cup Challenge Regatta held this weekend off the Newport Pier.
Conner finished fourth in a tactical
race which saw Ullman take sixth.
"I have no complaints,· Conner
said of making the trek north. •It
was a well run race. This is what
I do for fun."

him if he was going to race the

Ullman, the four-time defending
champ, was the obvious darling
of the Newport spectator boats
on the water Saturday as he
claimed a second-and two first-
place finishes during first-day
action. Horns were blowing from
all over the course and people
were wildly clapping as they
watched "their own" get the
"We definitely had a little edge
the first day," Ullman said. "We
have a good group, new sails,
new everything. We spent seven
days working on the boat and we
practiced this year.
"With Dennis coming, we put
more effort into it. As tough as he
is, we bad, too."
Conner's spinnaker made of
pure white (a color normally
reserved for the good guy},
couldn't mask the fact that most
of the fans here considered him
more akin to a hired gunslinger
of the Old West. All they saw
was coal black no matter wbat
the chameleon quise. Conner
was here with one thing in mind
-to gun down the local hero.
It.didn't happen Saturday. It did-

Conner and his crew fired the
opening salvo, taking the first
race in easy fashion over the sec-
ond-place Ullman and Co., but it

Irrelevant XXI
THE JOE FRIDAY REPORT
Just the facts. Sam.
Mr. Irrelevant 21, Sam Manuel of New Mexico State, isn't nec-
essarlly your routine last man picked in the draft.
For one thing. he's a twin. For a~ his two other favorite
sports are tennis and bov.lllng. His favorite football team is the
San Francisco 49ers. which ls fortunate enough because it was
the 49ers who drafted the 22-year-old defensive end.
But the 49ers were actually his favorites long
before the draft. Sam and twin Sean, a
tight end also drafted by the 49ers out
of New Mexico State on the last
round, INe(e born and raised in the
Bay Area so San Francisco has been
their home team since childhood.
So what is so unusual about old
No. 2547 Not much, really, except
Same has better credentials than
most last picks. He was flm·team all-
conference in the Big West. He's 6-3,
weighs 240, wears a size 12 shoe, loves
movies and Mexican food and ma~ in psy-
chology at New Mexico State.
Amazingly, you can SJllY just about exactly the same things
about Sean. including the college major. Both are also family
men. Sean will be coming with Sam to the Irrelevant Week cele-
bration as will their younger brother. Neno, and their mother,
Francine. Their dad, Samuel, died of cancer 13 years ago when
they were just 9. Their hometown ls El Sobrante, a suburb of
Richmond. In Richmond, they call it a suburb.

• Fellers, Verhulst
provide timely hits for
Pony All-Stars in 11-5
victory over Ocean View.
N EWPORTBEACH -
Booth Fellers and Otto
Verhulst came up with
some timely hits last week to
help the Newport Harbor Pony
All-Stars come from behind for
an 11-5 victory over Ocean
View.
Fellers had an RBI-double
and a two-run home run in
three at-bats while Verhulst
also went 2 for 3 with a double
and two RBI .
Ocean View led 4-2 and
were threatening in the fourth
with the bases loaded and
nobody out Scott Beerer came
on in relief of starter Scott Tip-
pett and retired the side while
striking out two. He went four
innings allowing one hit and an
unearned run.
Beerer ended up striking out
six total while walking just two
in picking up his first win of the
All-Star season. He bas struck
out 30 in 22 innings of work and
has a 2.49 ERA.
His performance against
Ocean View seemed to spark
Newport which scored four
runs in the bottom half of the
fourth inning and never looked
back. Verhulst, the team's lead-
ing hitter sporting a .600 aver-
age, singled in two runs to
break a 4-4 tie.
The other two runs in the
inning came home on a bases-
loeade walk and a passed ball.
Verhulst also threw out three
base runners trying to steal
from his position behind home
plate.
Newport added a single run
in the fifth and four more in the
sixth to put the game out of
reach. Feller's long home run to
left field capped the sixth-
inning onsalught and put New-
port up 11-4.
In another recent game:
Newport All-Stars 5, Fullerton 5
Newport jumped out to a 2-0
lead after three, but then had to
b~ttle back for the tie after
falling behind 5-2.
Fellers pitched the first five
innings, yielding only three hits
and one earned run. Beerer
pitched the final four, allowing
one run on five hits while strik-
