Scholarship students in grades
7-12 earn a ce.rta.in amount for
every grade they earn. The dollar
amounts tncrease as the educa-

School drop-outs or rule-break-

Eleanor Dlcluon's second

an extensive geography unit
about children around the world.
The students learned about the
ways and customs of people in
different countries and how the
children are alike and how they
differ from Newport Heights chil-

are reading, writing and listening
to sdence stories about plants.
They are watering and wailing
until the plants get big enough to

Mrs. Davis had just finished
reading •James and the Giant

had to promise not to go see the
movie until they finished reading
the book.

Success of vacations·
is· a .roll of the .dice
T ravellng wtth friend.a cu
be a risky propositioQ. I
have always feh the con-
cept was best suited to a board
game where players could siJn-
ulate the experience of being
on the road together without
actually enduring the awkward
pitfalls of vacation inti.IJ}acy.
Safely maneuvering little toy
vehicles around a game board,
friends might even be amused
by th-e annoying setbacks. You
know what I mean:
Type A travel companion
accelerates group through
three days worth of sightseeing
1n one afternoon: Advance
directly to last day of itinerary.
You packed the wrong
clothes: Stay two car lengths
behind the group.
Everybody else's children
behave better than you.rs: Pull
<;ard from excuse pile.
Girlfriend throws hlssy fit
over spousal neglect; Remain
in place for two turns.
You brought a book, they
brought a whistle: GAME
OVER.
These threats, along with my
own sense of paranoid privacy,
have always kept me from pur-
suing with abandon the popular
sport of traveling with friends,
in real life. So, why, you might
ask, did I recently conjoin with
three other families to plan a
rustic getaway to Yosemite Val-
ley over Father's Day Weekend.
The challenge, of course.
Here's how our game played
out:
Eight assertive adults and 13
children under the age of 12
check into Yosemite's House-
keeping Camp on Friday, ready
to stake a modest temporary
claim on the floor of this incom-
parable valley.

counter. Our campsites are
smack up agairlst the highway.
·we'll come back at 4 p .m. and

confidence.
Group revolts against
authority: Move ahead one
square and then back two
squares.
By 4 p.m. we secure water·
front property away from the
highway and the children are
poking their toes into the icy
currents of the Merced River.
~Fish begin to jump, steaks
·begin to sizzle and the daunt·
ing shadow of El Capitan puts
petty inconveniences into per-
spective.
Saturday morning we awak-
en to the smell of bacon, eggs
and blueberry pancakes being
cooked to order for us by one of
our families. We discuss our

Vacation euphoria sets ln:
Take a free spin on cruise con·
trol.
The Hike, or more aptly
called The Vertical Ascent,
lroves ambitious for our first
day out. Some of our faces beg
the question, •Are we having
fun yet?~
Whimpering female
attempts muttny on trail: Slow
all vehicles down and circle the
wagons in support.
We all congratulate our-
selves that night while dining
on awesome campfire spaghet-
ti. The bike was "not that bad"
after all. We are glad we did it.
On Sunday afternoon. we firld
ourselves perched at the top of
Vernal Falls, exhilarated and
thoroughly drenched from the
clunb.
·wow! Did we ~eally walk
up all those steps? my 4-year-
old son and I contemplate from
the bndge.
Nobody complained all day:
Reward yourselves with an ice I cream cone at the trait's end.
1 Monday afternoon. standing
in company of Mariposa
Grove's giant sequoias, the kids
beg to meet for one more meal
together on the ride home.
The grownups understand
we have already beat \he odds
with a perfect vacation togeth-
er. One more roll of the dice
and our luck could change. We
bid our goodbyes with the
promise of same lime next yedr
Everybody arrives home a
winner: You are entitled to one
additional day of vacation
together next year at no coc;t to
your friendships.
Traveling with friends. I!. 1t d

skill? I suppose it's all a matter

•The people of this state have
spoken out that they want three
strikes, they voted overwhelm-
ingly for it.•
The tough t~ law target-
ing criminals with multiple
felony convictions imposes a
tmbdatory sentence of 25 years
to life in prison to individuals
with two prior convictions for
violent or serious felonies.
Brewer and Johnson -who
co-authored the original three
strikes legislation -said the
law is helping to reduce crime
in the state. Johnson says the
law is the main reason the Cal-
ifornia Crime Index is down
13.4 o/o in the past two years.
•1t•s working,• Johnson said.
·Crime is beginning to come
down nationally as well, but
nothing like in California.•
Critics of three strikes say
the law bas been misused since
its passage. An individual with
two felony convictions could
end up with a life sentence,
critics claim, for a lesser felony
offense. ·
Perhaps the most celebrated
individual locally to nearly
qualify for a three strikes sen-
tence was convicted rapist
Dennis Ferrier. Ferrier, who
bad prior convictions for bur-
glary and rape, was bied for
felony burglary .after he broke
into a Costa Mesa home in
1994.
A jury eventually acquitted
Ferrier of the charges and con-
victed b.im on lesser misde-
meanors.

Orange County Public Defend-

more than 300 potential three

•There have been so many
borderline felony cases that
have been filed to bring in the

Butler said. •we're pleased that

Despite voters' approval of

Toledano, who is also the chair-
man of the county's Democratic

Toledano also believes the
decline in the state crime rate
actually began prior to the pas-
sage of the three strikes law. By
and large, he says, •there real-
ly doesn't appear to be any evi-

out the United States
Sailing Center in Long Beach,
the training site of Olympic
hopefuls. Headed by Costa
Mesa resident Mike Segerblom,
the Sailing Center has played a
major role in supporting local
athletes, including this year's
Laser class sailor Nick
Adani.son.
•So far this year, we had a
number of Olympic hopefuls
train here, including Adamson,
Alex Ascencios, Mike Sturman
and Bob Little, N Segerblom said.
"We've also had Nick Barfoot,
New Zealand's former world
laser champion, as well as many
Canadian sailors. N
Many of these sailors have
devoted their lives to training
over the last four years, but until
recently, none of them were able
to train out of one spot m South-
ern California. Olympic sailors
have flocked to the West Coast
over the years; however, their
training had been restricted to
sailing out of yacht clubs.
But now, Southern California
offers the United States Sailing
Center which is administered by
the Pacific Coast Sailing
Foundation and is affiliated with
the United States Sailing
Association. Though it officially
open in October 1994, the
Sailing Center recently installed
its boat ramp, completing the
launching area and making it
fully functional.
The Sailing Center itself has
its administrative office in a
trailer, plus gated storage
facilities for boats, a launching
crane and docks for tie-up.
The docks and the ramp were
the first phase of the
ever-growing project which is
expected to be completed in
1997.
Fund-raising for the Sailing
Center bas recently started as
well, beginning with a boat
donation program that has
already attracted a Tornado and
a 470.
One money-raising idea for
this spring is a series of one-day
regattas, where sailors will be
provided with a skipper/crew, a
boat, lunch and refreshments
after the racing, all for a small
fee.
these regattas will not only
raise money for the building, but
will also allow people to race a
variety of boats that they may
not have otherwise had the
chance to sail. a
The roots of the Salllng
Center and PCSF sprouted back
in 1981, when a small group of
Southern Calif omians gathered
to form a non-profit organization
that would help Olympic
hopefuls prior to the 193(

DISTRICT 62 TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS
HISTORY IN THE MAKING
• Costa Mesa American UtUe
League's A's blank Costa Mesa
National UtUe League's Cardinals,
5-0, in first postseason meeting
since split up oJ parent league.
By Barry .Faulkner, Daily Pj/ot
WESTMINSTER -What is believed to
be the first meeting between rival Costa
Mesa Little Leagues turned out to be more
of a pitchers duel than a civil war Thursday
night in the opening round of the District
62 Major Division Tournament df Champi-
ons at Johnson Junior High.
Costa Mesa American Little League's
Athletics rode the mound mastery of 12-
year-old right-hander Nick Cabico (15 of
18 outs on strikeouts in a complete-game
one-hitter) to advance with a 5-0 victory.
But the Costa Mesa National Little
League Cardinals, whose season ended
with a 19-7 record, came within one out of
a combined no-hitter.
The ground-breaking victory might be
the beginning of a historic postseason for
the Athletics, whose only loss in 19 games
came via forfeit (seven players were away
playing a soccer game).
"Some people pck \.L<; to win um thing, N said
Athletics Manager Umy Cabioo, who hopes to
guide the first Costa Mesa little League cootin-
gent to a Major Divisioo district crown.
With the younger Cabico, whose fast-
ball has reportedly been clocked at 68
mph, on the mound, it might be unwise to
pick against the Athletics. The A:s meet the
wirmer of Saturday's Fountain Valley-
Huntington Valley first-round clash in a
quarterfinal showdown Monday at 5 p.m.
Though the A:s managed just two hits
against their cross-town counterparts, they
put 15 runners on base (nine walks, two
errors, one fielder's choice apd one hit
batsman) to foil the tag-team pitching duo
of Michael Vasquez and Jordan Hart.
"We just gave them too many base run-
ners, N Cardinals Manager nm Glenn said.
The two Mesa squads, representing
leagues in their third season since Little
League population requirements forced the
original Costa Mesa little League to break into
two factions, were scoreless into the fourth.
Matt Ashton and Greg Nutter sand-
wiched walks around an error that allowed
A:s teammate Ryan Hayward to reach to
load the based with no outs.
Vasquez, who fanned nirle in four hitles~
innings, punched out the next hitter looking.
Marco Santangelo, however, walked to
force in a run and Hayward's heads-up
base running allowed him to score from
third with two outs when a passed ball
trickled a few feet behind the Cardinal
catcher.
Nick Cabico, who came in with two no-
hitters and three shutouts to his credit this
season, came within four outs of his third
no-no, before Cardinal
leadoff man Gary Glenn
lined a single just over the
outstretched arm of a
retreating second base-
man. But Glenn became
one of six runners left on
base by Cabico, who
'Struck out the side in the
second, third and fifth.
Glenn's looping liner
was the only ball hit out of
the infield by the Cardi-
nals, whose other three
outs came on two come-
backers and a sharp
grounder toward first,
which Nutter short-

standout son. Hl can't remember a game this
year a team has had more than one hit
against him. But he's one of three good
pitchers for us (Santangelo and Billy Lund

With a seemingly comfortable 2-0 lead,
the A's poste<I some insurance in the sixth.

That may not be

a&ad doublV tough tor 49ers· twins.
By: Eric Gilmore~ Co11tra Costa Times~ May 12
The telephone
answering machine at her El
Sobrante home clicked on,
and Francine Manuel's
message began: "Hi,
everybody. Samuel and
Sandor just got chosen by the
49ers. They'll be home very
soon. We'll all be living
(together) again."
Three weeks have
passed since Francine
received the mind-boggli.ng
news. Her identical twin sons
had been drafted be the 49ers,
each a seventh-round choice
from New Mexico State
Their selections
created a stir ii:t the media.
which latched onto the
unusual twist of twins from
Pinole Valley High School
being drafted by a bay area
team The fact that Samuel
was the draft's final selection
added spice to the story.
Francine, thought,
knows her fami ly's story goes
so much deeper
"It's just amazing,"
Francine said "It's our first
break, and it's a big one. It's
their first break, and it's a big
one "
As Francine knows so
well, the road Sandor --who
goes by. Sean --and Samuel
traveled to the 49ers was as
bumpy as one ripped apart by
an earthquake.
Their father, Samuel.
died of cancer when the twins
were 9. Francine was
suddenly a sing le mother
raising three boys, Sean,
Samuel and their younger
brother, Neno, in a rough El
Sobrante neighborhood
bordering Richmond.
"I always said it was a
wild ride. I had my hands on
the reins. Sometimes the
horses were · pulling me,"
Francine said, laughing.
Francine can laugh
now. It hasn't been easy.
Not only was she forced to mse bee Ji>= tonS alone. -
But she has also fought her
own battle against colon
cancer.
Through it all, she
watched her sons be targets
of racial prejudice from
whites and blacks. The twins'
father was black. Francine is
white.
"It was hard," said
Francine, a Pittsburgh native.
"In the community, they were
really not accepted by either
side."
Struggling to fit In
The Manuel's,
Francine said, live in a lower-
income, predominantly white
neighborhood. It's an area
that would provide plenty of
material for Jeff Foxwonhy's
"You know you're a redneck
when ... " routine, but with a
meaner twist
Yet they ... live a few
blocks from Richmo nd and a
predominately black
neighborhood.
"Coming from a
mixed background, we know
where we stand on things,''
Samuel said. "but other
people have a hard time
defining us. Whites look like
he's black. Blacks looks like
he's black, but 1le's different.
You don't act just like us.
You don't have the same
mentality.
So they tend to judge
you and want you to fit in a
category with the.m. but I
don't ~otally fit in there. and I
don't in at all over here with
the whites. So 1te•1 weird.
You grow up fighting both,
not fitting in either way and
then fighting o n both sides of
the track. And that's what it
was a lot of times. We fought
with all the whites on our
block, and then we go to
school and we have to walk
through the · all-black
neighborhood and we end up
fighting with all the black kids
in that neighbo rhood. It was
a trip."
One day on his way to
junior high school, Samuel
got into a fight with a black
schoolmate. This was no
ordinary incident.
"He and all his friends
chased me and my brother
down for about the next
year," Samuel said
"All I know is there
were about eight boys after
my sons," Francine said. "We
couldn't go anyplace where
they didn't amass~ It turned
out that the boy Samuel had
the encounter with later killed • somebody with a gun."
Bumpy road to college
Samuel and Sean were
supposed to attend De Anza
Higfi School the next year.
But Francine decided she had
to get them to a different
school. After a long battle --
"I had to fight it all the way
to the superintendent" -the
twins were allowed to enroll
at Pinole Valley.
Both brothers starred
on the Pinole Valley footbaJJ
team. Sean was running back
and outside linebacker. Sam
played fuUback and outside
linebacker. Yet when their
high tdlool ~ end~
they wound up at J..aney
Junior College instead ef a
major four-fear school.
School of bard knocks
SamueJ and Sean
enrolled at Laney. where they
came under the rule of Stan
Peters, an iron-fisted coach
who demanded excellence on
the field and in the classroom.
Playing for Peters was harder
than covering Jerry Rice
alone, but it was what they
11 needed.
Whether during
football season or not. if
Peters caught a player
hanging out on campus and
not attending classes between
9 a. m. and noon, he would -
in his words -.. run the hell
out of them." Three strikes
and they were off the team.
If a player was late for
practice, he would runs so
much that he'd often throw
up.
"That's the hardest
man I've been around in my
life," Samuel said. "That
man, hey, he's a good guy
now, but he was straight
Mussolini when we were
there. Good God, that man
was ruthless.
"But I was so far to
the right that his so-far-to-
the-left attitude kind of pulled
me right to the middle where
I needed to hP. " 1
Peters accepted no
excuses, on or off the field
He required his players to
maintain a 2.5 grade-point
avetage --the state minimum
for eligibility is a 2.0 --with a
goal of 3.0. Both brothers>
Peters said, met that goal.
"Our program is
known for discipline," Peters
said. 0 That•i the No. t thing
those guys needed and is
probably the reason they
came to Laney. They're both
real good kids. They were
just a little l00te out there."

decided it was time to get
serious about school.
Sean remembers he
was simply .. not gomg to
malce the same mistakes I
made in high school that got
me in here in JC in the first
place. I'm going to get past
this. I'm going to do the
school thing first and then
football 1s going to come
afterwards."
Samuel felt as if his
"clock was winding down"
and he had a few chances left.
"I had so much
potential, but was I ever
going to get to use it? I got a
little scared when I couldn't
go to college because of
trouble, because of my
grades. Right then when I
went to the JC, I said. 'This is
my last chance. ~can't really
meas things up.' That's kind
of when I woke up."

with the chemotherapy devise

stuck back there m
Richmond, the street stuff.
Either that or we'd be have
flunked out of school."
At Laney, Sean had a
new· attitude and a new
position --tight end --that
suited him perfectly. He had
exceptional speed for a tight
end but is also a physical
blocker.
Sam excelled at
outside linebacker.
The Manuel brothers
thought they were on their
way to a major college
scholarship.
They thought wrong.
Samuel suffered a
shoulder injury that forced
· him to miss his sophomore
season at Laney in 1992. Cal
and Oregon had some interest
in Sean, but they wanted to
wait until after spring practice
to decide.
Sean couldn't wait.
He. and Samuel had firm
scholarship offers from New
Mexico State. Francine was
fighting cancer and
desperately wanted · to make
sure her oldest sons' college
educations were secure.
"She was panicked,"
Sean said. "She didn't know
if she was going to make it.
She said, 'You guys just get
out. So at least you can get a
check and be supported and I
don't have to worry about
you. And then l'JJ leave
Neno with your uncle in Los
Gatos.'
"Me and Sam said,
'forget it, we'll just take it,
Jets just swallow our pride.'
We were the same way as
everybody else, 'New Mexico
State, what as that place?
'We were the same way,
'Only garbage people go
down to New Mexico State,
no one that's any good goes
there.• We went down there
anyway ...
Just days after signing .
his letter of intqrt to New
Mexico State, Sean learned
Colorado wanted him. It was
too late. Yet there was a
silver lining. The brothers
were still together.
Sean redshited in '93
with a knee injury. He caught
39 passes in '94 and 46 last
season, setting a school
record for receptions by a
tight end. Only two other
Division I-A tight ends caught
more passes last year.
Samuel started three
seasons -playing defensive
end and outside linebacker --
and finished with 206 tackJes.
As a senior he had S 1/2 sacks
and 1 S taclcJes for losses.
The brotllers felt as if
they were stationed at some
forgotten outpost in the New
Mexico desert, but the 49ers'
scoilts found them.
Twin lone shots
As seventh-round
draft choices, they aren't
locks to even make the team.
But Sean and Samuel
impressed their coaches last
week during the 49ers' three-
day minicamp.
Sean covers 40 yards
in just. more than 4.6 seconds
and is probably the fastest
tight end on S~ Francisco's
roster. The 49ers need a
young tight end to learn
behind starter Brent Jones,
and Sean should get a long
look in training camp.
"(Sean) showed some
real good signs of being a
really fine athlete, being able
to move with quickness,"
tight ends coach Mike Solari
said. "I'm impressed with his
character and work ethic."
Samuel is more of a
project. He has limited
experience in pass coverage
and is a bit undersized.
"But I sure liked rus
.. movement," 49ers linebackers
coach John Marshall said.
"He's a sreat kid. Very
smut. I lilted what I saw,
especially his attitude ...
Fcancine, Pittsburgh
High School's valedictorian in
1964, is no football coac~
but she comes from a football
family and .knows the game.
. . . ,._. '
Her father, Joe
Callolico, was a high school
running back in Pittsburgh.
Her brother, Butch, was a
stellar high school
quarterback and now coaches
football at Los Gatos High·
School.
Francine realizes her
sons face long odds to survive
in the NFL, but she's betting
on them.
'Tm the mother,
right, but I think they' re
going to show everybody,"
Francine said. "I think (the
49ers) are going to be
surprised. Just like New
Mexico State got a deal, so
did the 49ers."
