B ack in the days before
' 0zonation, locals treated
colored water in a more
primitive way, said Kart Kemp,
general manager or
Mesa Consoli-
dated Water
District.
The colored
water was
served in
amber glass-
es, Kemp
said.
Thal method might hove dis-
. guised the brownish color but
not the rotten-egg smell.
And although the rugged
farmers may have downed the
stuff straight, there were those
who we re more squeamish.
Mesa's treasurer Margaret Rut-
ledge has heard stones of people
who refused lo take baths in the
stuff, that is, until bathing in
sulfer waler began being touted
as "healthful.•
Thank goodness for modem
technology. Carollo Engineers
received a coptract last week for
predesign or the colo red Wdler
treatment plant.

EMBARRASSING SITUATION?:
When local, state dnd federa l
authorities rf.Lided a Newport
Center Drive business this wee k
for partid patmg in an alleged
te lemarketing scam, litUe did
they know they were directly
across from the agent of the
NBA's most controversial playe r.
Dwight Manley, who repre-
sents 10 professional sports play-
ers including Dennis Rodman
and Karl Malone, said he was
spooked by all the gun-lotmg
FBI agents guarding the elevator
in front of his office, especially
when they stopped him and
asked to see his identification.
"Thank G<>9 I didn't have
Karl Malone or some othe r big
client come in and think l was
being apprehended," Manley
said. "That would have been
really embarrassing."
GIRL POWER: The Monster Mile
held on Thursday, which chal-
le nged junior llfeguards to run
and swim a mile, was designed
for fun. But the competitive
streak was appare nt in some of
the partid pants.
Many of the youths' parents
waited for the first-place finisher
to exit the chilly Pacific Ocean.
As they applauded the paddling
swimmer much to their amaze-
ment the jwtlor lifeguard wasn't
topless.
It turned out first place went
to Hayley Pelrsol, 12, of Irvine,
prompting some of the women
~ho watched the race lo scream,
"It's a girl ... it's a girl."

~OSTA MESA -Police

the standoff.
Eric Jack Haley, 26, allegedly
took $350 from a Coco's restau-

Sgt. Kevin Lovelady. Police later
found the weapon to be a pellet

Officers respontling to the
scene spotted Haley, who fled on
foot from Coco's near Mesa Verde

he ran inside the bowling alley,

At its meeting, the City Coun-

Long Beach.
The bids on the West Side pro-
ject were higher than any other
planning project in the city's his-
tory, but the project is also the
city's most ambitious.
The goal is to redevelop the
area bordereq roughly by Santa
Ana River, Harbor Boulevard,
Wilson Street and the Newport
Beach city limits. The area has an
awkward mix of businesses and
homes but has the potential to
become an economic hub espe-
cially since it has several areas

FAIRGROUNDS --; lt was a
weekend to celebrate tradition,
gather among friends and bring
. a uniqQe culture and heritage to
those· who may otherwise not
experience it. .
:tbousands of people, includ-
ing hundreds of American Indi-
an des<;ent, came to the Orange
County Fairgrounds this week-
end for the annual Intertribal
Powwow.
The event, in its 30th year,
was presented by the Garden
Grove-based Southern Califor-
nia Indian Center and is one of
the 18rgest in the country.
It culminated Sunday with the
crowd-pleasing Fancy War
Dance, the powwow closing
song and a benediction.
"To us, it is religious, and a
coming together of family," said
Alma Rail, a member of the
Seneca tribe and president of the
Indian center's board of direc-
tors. "We also want to teach the
young people and the small ones
who we are because we are not
very visible in the community.•
The Costa Mesa powwow
featured traditional American
Indian song and dance, tribal
dance contests, arts and crafts
and plenty of Indian fry bread
tacos.
Dancers dressed in traditional
regalia, which varies from tribe
to tribe but usually includes
feathers, bead work and leather.
They danced to music provided
by the drum -what the tribes
consider their Grandfather.

Will Jordan Classic with a
sizzling 62 on Saturday,
then holds off teammate
for the title on Sunday.
Williams, a t 7-year-old who at times can
be very vocal, was cooled off in the final set
as Davenport rallied from a 4-2 deficit to
post her first tournament championship of
the year. At th~ outset the deficit was 0-3.
"It really was a weird match," said Dav-.
enport in the aftermath. "Really, Venus had
the match in hand. But I started playing
much better in the thirCl, I started g'etting
my game back."
Davenport admitted she felt down after
bowing in the second set, but credited her
rallying spurt to a break point which ignit-
ed a flwry of Davenport winners.
"I just started firing up," continued Dav-
enport "When I got the one break, I knew
I was back in the match. I was able to go
from there."
Davenport said she felt the heat more on
Saturday when she disposed of Steffie
Graf, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3.
·TENNIS
•It nught have been hotter today," said
Davenport, "but I think the points were a
lot mote grueling yesterday. It might have
been a little longer (today), but I felt better
t6day. •
Davenport, who entered the tournament
as the No. 1 seed and was part of the tour's
·first all-American finals this year, said the
slow hard court was to her liking, but
declined to get into any sort of •rtvalry"
role with the fellow American Williams.
"I'm five years older," she said. •rve
played her probably around four, five
times. I'm not exactly sure. But it's not like
we met in the finals of Grand Slams.
"I enjoy playing her; it's a good chal-
lenge. She's only 17; sometimes that's
exciting to play players like that."
Davenport's road to the semifinals was a
comparatively easy one; talting a bye in the
first round, then dispatching Kimberly Po
.
of the U.S., 7-5, 6-0, and Thailand's Tama-
ri.ne Tanasugam, 6-2, 6-0.
Po entered with No. 56 laurels in the
rankings; Tanasugam is No. 41 . Graf, due
to injuries, is No. 57, but was seeded fourth
in the tournament here at Stanford.
Williams, fifth ln the rankings, was
seeded third and defeated No. 2-seed
Monica Seles, 6-3, 6-4 in the semi.finals.
Davenport enjoyed a pome court edge
in terms of a very supportive crowd during
the toumamen.t.
•Sometimes when the crowd's ogainst
you, you play gr~at, if you're really fired up
to win. But here in Calif omia the crowds
are'always very supportive. In the last few
days I've really put in a great effort. But I
think the crowd was for Venus, too. It was-
n't totally one-sided."
The victory put Davenport over the .500
plateau in tournament finals in California.
Earlier she had won the 1996 Los Angeles
Open and the 1997 Indian Wells tourney,
finishing second at those two tournaments
on the return appearance. Lindsay Davenport

The Sea Kings broke it open in the second half

Earlier in the day CdM got past a Hawaiian

Palda was again the man in the center of things
with seven goals, including the game-winner.
In Saturday's play Corona del Mar opened with a
14-5 victory over host California High. then pasted
Charter Oaks, 15-4, in a game at La Serna.
Palda was Corona del Mar's major offensive
threat against California with fow goals, with Greg
Marchiorlatti and DJ Jackson contributing two
goals each.
Brad Netherton and Garret Bowlus shared goal-
tending duties, Netherton with eight saves in the
first half as CdM built an 8-2 lead.
Corona dominated Charter Oaks in the early
going, too, jumping to a 12-3 lead with Palda (4),
Ryan Tucker (4) and Marchiortatti (3) pacing the
assault. Netherton bad six saves in that span to

ORTBEACH -
Lifting weights has been
mtegral part off high
school football programs for
many years, but most of it
consisted of the bench press
and related workouts.
But a handful of programs,
like that of Newport Harbor,
has gone away from those
types of li.fts and now
concentrate on Olympic-style
weightlifting that not only
makes a player stronger, but
gives them confidence,
flexibility and another sport to
train and compete in.
"These lifts are explosive
and aggressive, similar to the
plays they make on the football
field,• Newport Harbor
Football Coach Jeff Brinkley
said. •Jt be1pl them mat1rnize
their strength and play up to
the highest level that they
possibly can.•
The program blossomed
under the guidance of then
assistant coach Tony CiarellL
CiareW was familiar with
Olympic-style weight training
and believed it would be
beneficial to the Sailors'
football program.
For a number of years, the
bench press was the staple of
football lifting, it but has come
under fire because it actually
makes and athlete less flexible.
The new program started
slowly, but more and more
players became interested and
Newport Harbor developed
some of the strongest players m
Orange County.
"It helps to equalize the
advantage that some schools
have in size,• Brinkley said.
•Like in the 1992 CIF playoffs
when we faced Irvine.• Irvine
had 1,300 more students that
Newport Harbor.
The program centers around
these Olympic-style li.fts: the
clean-and-jerk. snatch and
squats.
Clean-and-jerk involved two
movements. An athlete leans
over secures his bands to tbe
bar of the weight. Then, in one
continuous movement, he lifts
the bar to the middle position
just above shoulder high.
From there, the athlete most
jerk the bar over his head, not
press, and prove that he has
control over the weight.
The snatch is one movement
that takes the bar from the floor
to directly overhead.
These lifts not only build
strength and agility, but they
also build confidence in an
athlete. "When you weigh 170
pounds and can lift 240-250.
you know you can compete
against a guy who may not be
as strong as you,• Brinkley
said.
The progran11proved so
successful, that
Newport Harbor has
held weightlifting
meets at the Sailors'
weight room for the
past eight years.
Recently.Jhe contest
has gone to clean-and
jerk only, which limits
the competition to
Huntington Beach
since it is one of the
few schools that has Munoz
an Olympic-style
program.
The Oilers' program, which
was started when Ciarelli
became the football head
coach, is still new and slowly
drawing interest. •rm glad
other schools don't have this,•
Ciarelli said. •tt gives us an
advantage over them.•
When Oarelli left Newport
Harbor. the program was left in
the capable hands of Mike
Bargas, who remains the
defensive line coach and
strength coordinator.
•This program makes us the
strongest team around,
pound-for-pound,• Bargas sa..id
"These lift also take lots of
training in coordination and
balance.•
The clean-and-jerk is one of
the most technically difficult
lifts and may seem a bit
confusing to an incoming fresh-
man who has never lifted
weights before.
Bargas starts an athlete on a
PVC pipe, which is fairly light.
so the athlete can learn the
.clean and Jerk phases with lots
of repetition. The athlete is also
shown a Vldeo
Later, the athlete advances
to a 10-pound bar and
progresses fTom there until he
has developed enough skill to
try some heavier weights.
The program has had
pos1bve feedback from those
who have participated over the
years
Senior Jorge Munoz. who is
a 5-5, 170-pound defensive
tackle, believes that the lifting
has done wonders for his
overall game.
•When you see how strong
you really become. it gives you
a lot of confidence,• Munoz
said. •A 250-pound lineman
doesn't intimidate me
because I know I can
move rum.·
Munoz's fnend,
Robert Peredia.
believes that the
program is a boost of
confidence for all the
Sailors players.
Peredia, who will be
an important member

backfield this season.
also wrestles and
knows how importance
strength and agility are.
Peredia has also not ruled
out another option when he
goes to college. • rve looked
into weightlifting and I've
