OOLE4NG OUT A GIFT The night before his early- moming breakfast with local bil- lionaires, Republican presidential hopeful Bob Dole apparently bied to get into the California spirit by cruising a local shopping mall and dining on gourmet piz- za. Reluctant to stay holed up in his Sheraton Newport hotel room, Dole -with his entourage of aides and Secret Service agents -suddenly showed up at Fash- ion Island around 8 p.m. Tuesday. He was headed for Calif omia Piz- za Kitchen restaurant, but on his way got a gift from an employee at Gary's Island men's shop. Salesman Louis Cuccio said as soon as he heard Dole was approaching, he grabbed one of Gary's Island's exclusive •aloha" shirts to give to the presumed candidate. But Cucdo had to run the gar- ment by Secret Service agents first: "They wanted to know the style of the shirt and make sure it wasn't too provocative.• The Ha waiian shirt -a black one decorated with native girls and palm trees -passed inspec- tion, and Cucdo presented it to Dole. "He said, 'Can I pay for this?' and l said, 'I want it to be a gift to our next president,'" said Cuccio, a Costa Mesa resident. "He looked great and he was very personable." Cucdo is a Dole fan. But if Presidenj Bill Clinton happe ns to stop by? "We have to make sure we give him a different shirt,• Cuccio said . ,.. PARTIAL TO P£PP£RONt7 At California Pizza Kitchen, Dole and his half-dozen aides sat at the counter (the handful of Secret Service agents stood around, as usual) and ordered three of the famous pizzas -bar- becue chicken; pepperoni; Peking duck -as well as the focaccia bread, said assistant manager Tony Purvis. He seemed to enjoy the pep- peroni the best, Purvis said. (That traditional conservatism?) And while Purvis said the for- mer senator was frie ndly and upbeat, signing autographs and posing for photographs, he seemed a bit tired. "I think it'd been a long day for him,• Purvis said. And yes, the group paid for the meal, though Purvis presented Dole with a gift of a souvenir sweatshirt and golf balls. What about a tip? ·His staff people took care of it, and I'm not sure what the amount was,• Purvis said. Was Purvis won over? Will he vote for Dole? "I haven't made up my mind yet." ,.. By Julie Ross Cannon, Daily Piiot NEWPORT-MESA -It may look like Just another survey, but school district officials are hoping parents will pay a little more attention to the teachers report card mailed last week. For the first time, school officials mailed a six-question survey and cover letter Jurie 13 and June 14 to parents of each of the district's 18,000 stu- dents. They are hoping par- ents will fill out the ques- tionnaires and return them to each of their child r en 's teachers. It was called simply the Coast -barren land, hills and gullies running between Corona del Mar and Laguna Beach right down to the sea, and lima beans and orange trees wouldn't grow there, so local farmers considered it worthless. parking place, food, shelter, restrooms ,and a beach. Resi~ents wanted more open space, lf/ss traffic and the residential beaches they were accustomed to. The Irvine Co., in constant touch with the outspoken and demanding Friends of the Coast, altared their plan three times before it was approved by the Friends of the Irvine ·coast, county supervisors and the state Coastal Commission. But in the 1960s, The Irvine Co .. no longer farmers but developers, turned an eager eye to the wild coast land with plans to keep it intact, despite attempts by the cities of Newport Beach and Laguna Beach to annex the portions closest to their borders. In the coun- ty's Southern Sector General Plan filed in 1963, the prime focus was the 10,000 acre coastal site, which was to be developed as residential units, 50,000 to house 80,000 people. This was acceptable -considered low density in the development-friendly 60s. ing environmentalist movement and the watershed Proposition 20, the Coastal Zone Conservation Act on the 1972 ballot. The voters wanted the Coast left untrammeled and available to everyone. This was a different approach to developing the Irvine Coast, with a plan of a world class resort with emphasis on open space, public land and private property. Now called the Newport Coast project, it includes two golf courses, hotels, shops, 2,600 hillside homes and 6,867 acres of true open space -about 73% of the total 9,442 acres comprisjng the Irvine Coast property. The COa.stal Commission was created to protect a statewide coastal plan and it had the power to override local development if necessary to protect coastal access. This turned into a battle between the inland residents who wanted access and the beach dwellers who want- ed privacy. On the hills slated for development, custom lots are priced at $1 million and more, and tiers of condomini- ums rise out of the wild mustard. Each one features some sort of neat historical yam, chock-full of anecdotes and tales of those who made this area what it is today. But Anne is much more than a walking file cabinet. She has another role as the newsroom receptiorust and conscience, often the first to hear compliments when we've done good and complaints when we've goofed. Sure, she'll let people know when they've made an error, but she's also very protective of her brood, fending us off from the more fanatical phone callers. tony dodero And when we're feeling low, we can always count on Anne for a kind word - unless of course we forget to turn in our timecards. I remember when I was a reporter and I had been asked to fill in ai the acting city edi- tor while the boss was out. It was a hectic week, and I blindly tried to do the job, probably not very well. But that didn't matter to Anne, who told me at week's end, "I'm so proud of you." That meant a lot to me. And fortunately or unfortu- r.ately, depending on whom you ask, soon after I aban- doned my tape recorder and reporter's notebook and became an editor. T hanks for all the fun mem- ories, Anne -even that time we all caught ptomaine poisoning or something like that at one of your Secretary's Day lunches. Is the learning atmosphere positive and moti- vating for your child? What do I do well? What suggestions would you make for my class? The questions were written by a joint panel of administra- tors and union officials, Bernd said. Union president Maya Deck- er could not be reached for comment. "I'm tired of sitting down all the time." »Come here leg." he said, as he grabbed hold of a white band strapped around his leg and brought the liieless limb toward his chest to stretch it. Jim waiters It's all hOwyou look at things •Dreams do come true and it can happen to you, too, Mr. Irrelevant 21 , Sam Manuel, the last pick of the San Francisco 49ers I t used to be the last pick in the NFL draft was a throw-away pick. Oh sure, there are the occasional later-round choices that went on to Hall of Fame careers while there are several marquee first-rounders who have gone bust. For the most part, however, by the time the 13th, 14th or 15th round rolled by some teams were drafting a school's track star because of his athletic ability. Or, they were drafting some guy they didn't know anything about because the team trainer's mother said her sister's neighbor who moved back East thought a kid was another one of those •can't miss• prospects that, despite the moniker, was some- how always still available as the draft dwindled. The perennial playoff contenders had.long since stopped picking several rounds before, passing on these hidden gems. For the most part, the lower-round selections would be the bodies used to fill spots during preseason practices. They would be the moving and breathing tackling dummies. U they got injured? So what? They were the expendables. For some it was a rotten deal. Betng paid a couple hundred bucks a week to get life-long injuries before going on to their "real careers• working 40-hour weeks for near minimum wages. For others, it was their one brush with the pros. A chance to get a firsthand look at the Pro Bowlers they'd seen before only on television or from the stands. A chance to measure themselves against the best and know they'd been there once, even if they didn't stay. These stints with the games' legends would fill the stories that still to this day make their eyes sparkle with a hint of life's fire when they tell them. The scars and sore knees that crack every time they get up out of an easy chair become the sound effects to add a touch of reality for the grandkids and whoever else gives them even an inkling thet might be interested in hearing them spin their tales of yore.
