STACY BROWN·MAK'llNJS
I twas a terribly hot day in
the Oaush Fast Freight
warehouse in Costa Mesa,
With only & whirring fan
givtng some air circulation to
the garage-like setting, the
Nomads Suri Band jammed on
a loft overlooking four classic
cars.
All five members sported T-
sbirts and shorts except one:
Chip Delancey, the key-
boardist, who felt comfortable
enough to go shirtless. They
are a relaxed bunch, and
should)>e, especially consider-
ing these five have spent 10
years together doing exactly
thls.
Although the Nomads has
quite a long history in the
Southern California music
scene, the modem Nomads
have been playing music since
1984 and the current roster bas
been together since 1988 when
John Daffron -·a first-grade
teacher at Newport Heights
Elementary -joined the
group.
They've formed a bond
over the years, and they are
quick to joke about the
intricacies of being·in a
band that's played mostly
at parties and clubs.
Joe Shockley, the
drummer and oldest
member in his la.te 40s, is
a grandfather of two and
is an annual finalist in
the Benjamin Franklin look-a-
like contest. Well, not really,
but that is a quip Daffron likes
to make. One glance at Shock-
ley peering over the rim of his
glasses perched halfway down
l$ nose and you can see why
~on says this -Shockley
defuiitely has an eerie likene5s
to Franklin. ·
That makes for another

Nomads is the only Theater. It also has a semi-reg-
band in ular appearance at Hogue
his-
tory to perform
on the drag strip in Bakers-
field.
All joking aside, the
Nomads play year-round and
hold weekly rehearsals when it
doesn't have its typical summer
schedule of two perlonnances
or more a week.
The band has opened for
Bannichaels where it performs
once a month. But mostly
the band's slate is filled
with beach and private par-
ties, especially in the sum-
mer.
The band also gets
around by playing the "yacht
club circuit,• Daffron said.
And while that may be true,
they also play a lot of charity
functions for groups like
Make-A-Wish Foundation,
SurfRider Foundation and
Blackeys Classics, to name a
few.
The next big date for the
band is Aug. 22, when it plays
at the sold-out "Blues on the
Bay" event at the American
Legion ~n Balboa Island.
All members agree though,
the best booking all year is the
Indian Princess Nation party-
where dads and daughters get
together one weekend to bond.
"It is the funnest perfor-
mance all year,• rhythm gui-
tarist Phil O'Brien said.
Bassist Joel Helin said all
the guys in the group are here
because they want to have fun.
And they all agree. But they
are also here because they are
a band made up of five men
who love to play music and
who would like to make it big
in the music world.
The have found some suc-
cess in that world so far. They
started as a garage band and
have progressed to cutting
their own CD and playing on
national television. The
Nomads' music can oo heard
on the radio in Alaska, Boston,
Milwaukee, San Francisco and
locally on KLOS. And they
have ~..n seen on ESPN for
•Summer Sizzle" and MTV.
"It has been fun to watch it
grow,• Daffron said.
The group is working on its
second CD, which will contain
all original music except for a
version of the • 50s song •Love
Potion No. 9," but they have
the same trouble that many·
bands have and that is finding
investors or backers for its
album.
But the members of the
Nomads remain optimistic
because they know they have a
lot of fans out there. And that is
what ultimately drives them to
keep practicing in that hot loft
in the Costa Mesa warehouse
week after week. ·

don't really hate them. They are

And they don't take up much

The malls are alive with

reached under the counter and
pulled out a complete set of the
McDonald's Beanie Babies.
-aeth would love 'em,• the
woman purred.
Her husband nodded in
solemn agreement. That she
would, he allowed.
I suddenly felt sorry for Beth.
Whoever she was, she was
about to get a handful or two of
sorry-looking fuzz balJs that, in
another lifetime, were dished up
with Big Macs and Quarter
Pounders. Poor Beth.
Now you'd thrnk -with the
world being as vast as it is -
that there'd be a place where a
person could escape Beamedom.
You'd think.
Every sUinmer, without a
single miss, my son and I go
camping up in the Sierrds.
We spend a few hours trymg
to recall how to put up the
tent, marvel at the stars m the
pitch-black evening sky, hike
to lake? that probably look
exactlf as they did when John
Muir rambled through these
mountains, and try to hook a
trout or two.
There's a small boathouse
on one of the lakes, a bait
house, really. It's run by a guy
named Barrett. As long as
we've been gdihg to the moun-
tains, Barrett has been there,
dispensing advice on how to
catch trout.
The place is a tumble of fish-
ing gear. There are hooks and
sinkers and reels and flies.
There are poles and nets and
leader as fine as a spider web.
There are rows of brightly col-
ored baits and lures with names
that sound as old and prized as
the sport itself.
On one wall there are sever-
.al rows of Polaroids of kids and
gro'Cfn-ups holding trout a.s big
and ·~tout as bowling pins. The
wall of fame. Jn another comer
there's a coffeepot to awaken
those who pull themselves
from their sleeping bags before
the sun comes up and try
their luck on the still-misty
lake.
lf you like fishing, you can
lose yourself in a place like this.
It's comfor.fable and predictable,
well-worn and slightlY. musty,
steeped in tradition.
So here I was on a recent
weekday, standing at the
counter with my son, plotting
out this year's assault on the
lake. We'.U try one of these,
we'll take one of those and,
sure, why don't you throw in
some of that.
I was eying a small bottle of
rainbow-colored Power Bait -
this year's can 't-miss product, I'd
been told -when something

Of particular concern to cities
is a proposed 25% cut in the
state's so-called car tax. The tax
generates about $4.2 million
annually for the city of Costa

year. Newport Beach receives
about $2.8 rru.llion from the car
tax and faces the possibility of
losing about $700,000.

t · Richard Lue~, chamber
' presldent, said the Taste of New-
' port committee made the deci-
sion to limit dgar vendors to one
after receiving several com-
plointl from patrons about cigar
smoke wafting through the eat-
, ing areas. Cigar booths have
been included in the event for
·, .the past two years.
"Cigar smoking is part of the
fine-dining scene, but it doesn't
have to be overwhelming,
, either,• Luehrs said. •m this
case, we felt we had to limit
it .•
The committee also raised the
price tag for the lone cigar booth
as a way to recover the anticipat-
ed loss of business from those
who complained about the
smoke, Luehrs said.
But P..eck said he believes all
local businesses should be given
the chance to participate without
a •price penalty" simply because
they are Newport Beach estab-
Usbinents and pay taxes to the
city.
"If> I want the chance to be in
it, I should be given an equal
chance with Newport Beach peo-
ple and even more of an advan-
tage over outside people,• be
said.
•
When the chamber last year
chose a Huntington Beach
tobacco dealer as the event's
sole cigar vendor, it raised the
ire of Peck and the owner of
Newport Tobacco, who felt they
were being shut out of the local
event.
This year, Newport Tobacco, a
member of the Chamber of Com-
merce, was chosen as the cigar
vendor.
•As it turns out, it was New-
port Tobacco complaining last ·
year," Luehrs said. •1 guess
sometimes you can't p~ease them
all... ~
Peck ls not the only one who
sees some inequity in the way
the Ta$te of Newport vendors are
chosen.
Shawn Needelman, opera-
tions manager of the Newport
Beach Brewing Co., said the
local business will not be part1ci-
pating this year because the
owners would like to sell food as
well as their award-wmning
beers.
Needelman said his micro-
brewery tried two years-ago to
sell beer but was told by orga·
nizers that Budweiser had
exclusive righti jil the event He
said he understands why it hap-
pens that way, but said it isn't
fair to the smaller local busi-
nesses.
~It's not really giving the
people of Newport a taste of
what they've got around them, ...
Needelman said. "It's not repre-
senting Newport Beach the best
it could.•
Bill Hamilton, owner of The
Cannery restaurant, said he
helped fonn the event -in its
10th year -and is a big support-
er f its philosophy.
"'The whole idea was to help
the restaut~mt business by
extending summer a couple of
weeks after i..aoor Day and to
showcase Jte fine res~u.rants we
have in Newport Beach,· he
said. ":-f}ere are limits to how man~' ople we can accommo-date.~
A ar as the sponsors bavmg

er ge sales, Hamilton said that is

port Beach Brewing Co.'s) prod-
uct may be, we chose one spon.

That's how the chamber pays
for all the entertaitiment and
the setup costs.•
Luehrs said the com.mittea
may review the cigar issue agam
after this' year's event, possibly to
determine a fair way for the sev-
eral Newport Beach cigar busi-
nesses to take advantage of the '
one slot.

The fate of the Huntress, the

This should remind us to do a

fume sniffers, life preservers,
pumps and oil levels should all
be checked prior to pulling away

Another loss will be the ability
to traverse beneath the Balboa

Commencing in January, the
bridge will be going through a
retro-fit bringing it up to
earthquake standards.
Five-foot-round pilings are to be
driven at each cross member and an boating traffic will be diverte~
around the island.
As an aside, during part of the
construction process, the bridge
will be reduced to one lane, with
flagmen at each end. The pile
driving noise not withstanding,
I'm sure the residents and
merchants aren't going to be
happy campers during this six-

construction time estimates go.

CONSULTING FOR SMALLER. FAST
GROWTH BUSINESSES
C•llfomla State Unlvenlty, Fullerton's Small Business
Institute (SBI) is accepting inquiries from business owners who
wish to have their firms participate in the SBl's nationally recognized
student consulting program. The Institute provides small businesses
with student consulting teams under the guidance of an instructor
with significant business experience. This program selects teams of
three to six graduate or senior business students to provide
consulting services over a 1 2 week period to pre-screened Orange
County firms. Students are closely supervised by a faculty member.
New ideas, new data and new systems are generated for
participating companies. The Institute has served more than 775
businesses. Even highly successful entrepreneurs have found that
their firms benefit greatly from participating in the program.
Since the Small Business Institute is self-funded, to cover expenses
it charges a sliding scale fee based on the size of the firm. The fees
are: $495 for businesses with less than Sl million in revenue; S995
for businesses with Sl million to S3 million in revenue; and S 1,495
for businesses with more than S3 million in revenue.

Adams came to the net early
