Jim de Boom, who served on the New-
port-Mesa school board for 13 years, said
he is seriously considering challenging
tncumbenl Councilwoman Norma Glover
in the upcoming City Council race. Glover
is otherwtSe facing a second term without
opposition.
"I cannot serve on a committee for a city ·
whose elected leaders would waste such
art inae4ible human resoµrce as Mr. Mur-
phy,• Yeager wrote in his resignation letter
to Glover, who chairs the committee. "I can
only hope that the council and Mr. Murphy
can r~onsider their deosion and correct
this colossal mistake ...
and hope he gets another JOb quickJy."
Phil Arsl, cbamnan of the Community
Association Alliance, said the residents'
group plans to poll its membershlp on the
issue.
NEWPORT BEACH -ln the aftermath
of City Manager Kevin Murphy's sudden
resignation this week, an aviation commit-
tee member has resigned, many residents'
advocates say they are pleased, and a for-
mer school board president is pondering a
write-in campaign.
"I'm disappointed in the 'no comment'
council members, and I think the wrong
person resigned," said de Boom, a 23-year
resident of the city. "Someone needs to
work al bringing some civility to the City
Council.•
Glover had no comment.
John Yeager, who is Councilman Dennis
O'Neil's appointee on the city's aviation
committee, resigned Thursday from his
volunteer position.
But pn the other side, Balboa Perunsula
activists and residents in other parts of the
city said Murphy's departure may be better
for the community in the long run because
of his apparent disagreement with the
council majority on basic philosophies.
"My priorities and goals are not his pri-
orities and goals,• said Tom Hy ans, presi-
dent of the Central Balboa Homeowners
Association. "But I wish Kevin all the best
"We certainly supp<>rt the actions of the
City Council and pledge to work with
them, moving forw<lfd to build a better
city,· he said. ·we think our infrastructure
problems have been disregMded, and we
bope to work with councLl members to
address residents' issues.·
But Rush Hill, a business conunuruty
leader, said rumblings in the conunuruty
have brought out talk of more wnte-m
campaigns and even a recall.

NEWPORT BEACH -The
Balboa Bay Club is no doubt the
ritziest, most exclusive private
resort on the Newport Beach
coast.
But many of its buildings -
well-traveled by top political fig-
ures, community leaders and
philanthropists -are old and
have become dUficult to main-
tain. Member services and
employee offices are scattered
throughout the site, and the.
1950s architecture is outdated.
~ So, as the club turns 50 Uus
year, it will get a $40 million face
lift.
By month's end, club offtc1als
will submit detailed plans to the
city for its redevelopment prOJeCt,
which calls for almost everything
-with the exception of the Ter-
race Apartments -to be d.emol-
ished and rebwlt
After a failed attempt in 1991
to build a 300-room luxury hotel,
executives at the Bay Club decid-
ed on a lower-key project.
"We realized that the Balboa
Bay Club works just fine as it is,•
said Dave Whoolen, president of
International Bay Clubs lnc. •w e
will redevelop and modernize it,
but we won't change the basic
nature of the club.•
Last week City Manager
Kevin Murphy said the city
required the redevelopment pro·
ject in exchange for the club's 50·
year lease of the city-owned tide-
lands.

other with their tails. ·watch,
watch, watch -he's doing that
bobbing thing with his line
agaJn. Ooooh. I'm really scared
now.•
I'd like to be good at 1t. I real-
ly would. What a great American
pastime. Like golf, it's steeped in
tradition. Everything is done just
so. Techniques passed down
from father to son, mother to
daughter. Everybody has a
favorite spot and a secret bait.
The great outdoors, the rushing
stream, the mountain lake. •A
River Runs Through It" at every
tum. There's the cool clothes -
the upside-down sailor hat with
all the doodads stuck in it, and
the vest with 26 pockets.
In fact, that's part of the prob-
lem. There's too much stuff. Not
knowing how to use a few things
is manageable. Not knowing
how to use anything is a serious
problem. You've got your lines,
your sinkers, your bobbers (cork
and plastic,) worms (h.ve and
rubber) and 4,000 lures. And if
you're Dy fishing fagedaboutit
because that's totally different.
There's even marshmallow
bait -miniature marshmallows
in fluorescent yellow and orange.
ln fact, there's a good example.
You can't just pick one. Depend-
ing on where you are, the fish
will only be fooled by one color
or the other. Put the right color
on your hook and the last thing
the fish remembers thinking is
"Hnun, that looks good." Use the
wrong one and they're running
circles around you again. "Ob,
~e I'm actually going to put a
yellow marshmallow m my
COMMENTS &
CUllOSITIES
mouth. I'm sure."
There's also a lot of cama-
raderie involved, which detracts
greatly from the experience.
Whenever you encounter anoth-
er boat, you wave (everybody
knows everybody, except you)
and say "How you doin'?'' Then
you hold up your catch with a
big smile on your face. This
assumes of course you have a
catch to hold up. It's especially
pleasant when the person hold·
ing the string of 18 trout is an 87-
year-old man or an 11-year-old
girl..
1 smile and wave back, pre-
tending not to hear the "How
you doin'" part. No one-really
wants to hear you whine about
being out here three hours, my
back is killing me and the only
thing biting is the mosquitoes.
They love me by the way. I could
get mosquito bites in the Arcbc
in January. My wife says it's all
the olive oil. .
I have learned one thing.
When you reel in your line, pay
very close attention to the hook.
Snagging your fishing partner's
ear lobe or thumb is considered
very bad form and causes a great
deal of excitement in a small
boat.
I will prevail, however. no
matter how long it takes. At this
point, I don't care if it's nvers or
lakes or the bounding main. I
will land a big one, wrestle it into
the boat and have one of those
goofy pictures taken where you
bold up your trophy catch for all
the world to see.
There are a number of annual
fishing expeditions, most notably
the Dan McNemey trek to Cabo
San Lucas, to which I've never
been invited but will someday
make the grade. Then I too will
be able to get a license plate
holder with pithy sayings like •A
Bad Day Fishing is Worse Than a
Good Day at Work." That doesn't
sound right. Whatever. You
know what I mean.
If you have some fishing
advice, lay it on me. I've got the
colored marshmallows figured
out. I need help .with everything
else.
I gotta go.

of homeowners associations and
business leaders.
Brine said the city hopes to
complete the study, part of the
city's Balboa Peninsula revitaliza-
