WEST NEWPORT -On Fourth
of July's past, the holiday was
anything but pretty on Seashore
J:>Iive. •
In fact. Oil the day that is tradi-
ticmally celebrated with parades,
pknics and firewodcs, the street that
ribbons the bee.ch was commonly
refem!d to as the "War z.one."
Residents drenched their
anticipation of bottle rockets
bein throWD recklessl from

drunken people cruised the
street, up and down for how;s,
leaving litter and havoc in their
wake. Violence was created.
·u was actually quite scary to
be here,• said Joann Larson, a
West Newport resident since 1962.
"It was really almost anarchy."
Some years paddy wagons
would sweep the area. In 1986,
police dressed in riot gear to sub-
due a raucous mob. In 1992, a
stabbing climaxed the revelry.
The next year, barricades went
up for the first time.
Ever since the fences bisected
Seashore in 1993, the crowds
have become tamer, the cruising
subsided and the violent prob-
lems decreased.
And as a result, residents' fear
of the Fourth subsides each year.
"It's 1,000 times better,• Lar-

lightning storms and blistering heat. At this point,
he has already gone through four bicycle seats.
"That's all true, but I wouldn't trade this for
anything," he said. "I just can't tell you how
wonderful this has been."
Q
His cross-country jaunt almost never reached
fruitiop. When he first heau:l he would.need a
quadruple by-pass a t the age of 50, he figured the
dream was over.
However, he had the surgery performed at the
ruvem. o as on w ere ey o er a
new technique. Instead of splicing in vein grafts
taken from the legs, the doctors used mammary
arteries that feed into the lungs.
#There are four major arteries running to the
back of the lungs," Brandt said. #They took two
of those and used them to repair the heart.
Arteries are a lot stronger and ~an bring more
blood and oxygen into the heart.
#It did reduce the capacity Of my lungs, but
they have adjusted . It was a risky operation, but I
can't argue with the results .. #
So now instead of being the first Hammerhead
up the hill the way he used to be, Brandt is
satisfied with just getting up the hill. I ·nus may sound strange, but I have already
picked out a saying for my tombstone," be said.
"Don't get me wrong, I'm not ready to go by a
lof!gshot, but when I do it will read: 'Wait for me at
tlle top of the hill.' ·Really, that's what it will say."
Q
As far as the return b'tp?
Ml can't decide whether to fly or take a rail pass
and see otl\er parts of the country for 30 days,"
Brandt said.
He may not know, but the suspicion from this
end would be a return date of mid-August.
